Title: Why do some authors look down their noses at Schlock Mercenary?
Post by: mbarker on February 15, 2010, 02:38:32 AM
In which Howard explains why he is a paranoid poor country cousin?

No, not really. But there is a great interview with Howard over here!

Neat. Thanks for posting that, Mike.

Numerous SF writers read and enjoy Schlock Mercenary. For example, David Brin.

Since the first thing out of Howard's mouth is that he isn't looked down on, I think I agree with Peter on this.

Apologies for any unwitting offense. As Howard points out, I don't think anybody looks down their noses at SM. I was attempting to play off his humor, and clearly failed.

I hope you enjoyed the interview. I certainly did. All I was trying to do was get people to read it.

Again, my apologies for offending you.

It worked for me. I probably wouldn't have clicked on a thread that just said something like "So-and-so's Interview with Howard Tayler".

Of course, I was expecting something along the lines of what the subject heading stated, and was thus pleasantly surprised to find the content being somewhat different than expected. It was a rather enjoyable and informative piece.

Truth be told, some authors DO look down their noses at my work. But that's because there is always nose-downy-looksy going on for any particular work -- authors tend to be an opinionated bunch.

I'm sure Mike offered no offense with his subject line, and I've certainly not taken any. I appreciate those who have risen to my defense nonetheless. It's nice to have people standing next to me as we gaze up at the stars and into the nostrils of our anonymous-yet-opinionated betters.

Oh, I wasn't offended.  I just didn't see why he brought the issue up.

As for why some authors do look down their noses, I sure it's at least partly a combination of content (they don't think science fiction can be real literature, whatever that means) and form (they also don't think comics can be real literature).  As for why they believe these things, that's another story, and one I don't think is appropriate for this thread; it gets into personal taste rather quickly.  I just have no trouble with either the content or the medium, and that's all I need to know!

Please read the interview. I think you'll quickly see why I used that topic line.
