Title: Good Author websites
Post by: guessingo on January 30, 2010, 06:58:16 PM
What are some good Author websites? The two I read are George RR Martin (check out the blog he sounds like he is making real progress on a Dance with Dragons) and Brandon Sanderson?

Any other good sites and blogs? I check out Joel Haldermans board sometimes. In large part because alot of other authors post on it (Elizabeth Moon posts there), but other than his forum he doesn't have alot of good stuff.

Scalzi's blog is moderately famous. He has been doing it for a long time.  He is at http://whatever.scalzi.com.  He posts often and is entertaining.

I have never heard of Scalzi. He looks interesting. The amazon reviews of his old man series look good. How are the books?

I've only read Old Man's War and Zoe's Tale and I liked them both. They both have a Heinlein feel to them, and I like that. Zoe's Tale is meant for a YA audience and is not military like Old Man's War. They are both worth your time to read. One of these days I'll get to the others.

The question I have is what type of blog are you going for?  Entertainment?  Insight into the business?  Just wanting to stalk your favorites?

I don't know what I want. I'll know if I like it if i see it. I am a programmer and there are a couple of software blogs I like. I also read Paul Krugman's blog (nobel prize winning economist) even though I am not a liberal (he is a big time lefty)

Pat Rothfuss' blog is always entertaining.

Before I even read Rothfuss's book, I read his blog for about a year. It's that entertaining.

What do you think of Rothfuss's books?

These top blogs require alot of time and effort. I guess it is their best way to market their books.

as soon as i finish the last mistborn book I am going to try Rothfuss's book. It has gotten terrific reviews.

Are there any other good forums to discuss sci-fi/fantasy other than websites dedicated to 1 author?

The Name of the Wind is very good. It is not, however, for everyone, though I do think it is for most everyone. Some people don't like it because it is slow. Just... well, I say give it a while. It grows on you.

Of course, I've never met one of these people who haven't liked it ;)

A few of the writer/editor/publishing blogs I keep up with:

http://brandonsanderson.com/blog (author Brandon Sanderson)
http://www.fearfulsymmetry.net (author Dan Wells)
http://slwhitman.livejournal.com/ (editor/publisher Stacy Whitman)
http://patrickrothfuss.com/blog/blog.html (author Patrick Rothfuss)
http://blog.nathanbransford.com (literary agent Nathan Bransford)
http://brilligblogger.blogspot.com (literary agent Joshua Bilmes)
http://www.deanwesleysmith.com (author Dean Wesley Smith)
http://spacestationnathan.blogspot.com (illustrator Nathan Hale)
http://www.holtuncensored.com/hu/ (editor/publisher Pat Holt)
http://realitybypassbooks.com/ (some ladies in my writer's group, not published...yet)

All of them talk about new books, the publishing industry, and etc. Very informative.

I don't keep up on many forums, so you'd have to ask around about that.
