Title: Who signed Robert Jordan's name of the Gathering Storm from Sam Wellers?
Post by: Deth on November 12, 2009, 04:45:50 PM
So I purchased the hardcover from Sam Wellers of The Gathering Storm and when I received it I saw that it was signed by Robert Jordan and Brandon.  I am confused as to who signed Robert Jordan's name on the book?  As we know it was unfortunately not Robert Jordan himself.

Not only am I an giant WOT fan, but also a book collector.  I was surprised and slightly disappointed to find a posthumous signature on a book I purchased.

my guess is it's either a reproduced version of his signature or that of his wife signing his name. I kinda doubt it's sanderson signing as jordan. Actually, i quite highly doubt it.

But this is just my guess.

Edit: that or it's an outright forgery, which i suppose is also possible.

The signature does look like his though. I imagine the signature was just scanned in, or perhaps Jordan signed one title page before his death and they were all photocopied. Either way, Robert Jordan would be the man who signed your book, but if you look closely they are all printed with the book and not signed individually.

It's a scan.  It's in the UK edition as well (I imagine it's in the other editions as well).

Ahh...so all hard covers for Gathering Storm have this signature then?

That makes me feel better.

Not only is it digital, it's a gray image printed with a standard linescreen so the dots are large and clearly visible. It was never intended to be mistaken for a handwritten signature.

Yup, ook's right, if you look closely at it, you can pretty clearly see it's printed and not actually hand written.

And yeah, as far as I'm aware, all hardbound copies contain the signature, though i suppose I could be wrong, but I doubt they're gonna stop doing it suddenly.

Brandon said on his blog that the signature is there on his request; he didn't feel right about signing the book unless RJ's signature was there also.

I thought I read, most likely on Mr. Sanderson's blog, that the only way he really felt comfortable signing this book was if it had some equal version of Robert Jordan's mark on it as well.  So they had the image printed on every book.

Edit: Yeah, what he said ^

Gotcha...thanks everyone for the clarification.

I didn't look too closely, but not that I did, I can easily see that it was printed on.

I was more concerned that someone else, maybe Robert's wife,  had signed the name.

Thanks again for the clarifications.

The paperback version in New Zealand that I have has a printed signature from RJ.

Did somebody ask for the Department of Redundancy Department?

My book has RJ's signature in it too ... I think it is some kind of Boskone plot!

The Lensmen aren't going to like this!

To annoy Kaz?

I'm fairly new here, but I think I'm already doing a pretty good job of annoying him.

Not as good as the person mixing Star Wars in, but still ....

I disagree with nothing in this statement. It achieves the Eero seal of approval.

Kaz makes it his purpose in life to attempt to annoy us all. Sometimes, we try to return the favor. It works out pretty well.

I just hope I'm not seriously annoying him.

I just like messing around, and misinterpreting things.

Fun place, and Brandon's writing is a fun backdrop on which to do it.

Don't. It's much more fun to annoy him without regard for his feelings.  **smiles innocently, glances at Kaz, then walks away**

**comes back**

Oh, about the misinterpreting things, it's a favorite pastime for most of us here.

**leaves again**

Oh, come on Kaz. You can do much better than that. After all, you've got to be relatively close to realistic. I mean, everyone knows that by all rights, that last scene should have gone like this.

From Kaz's point of view:
**Goes to attempt to drag Andrew back, but hesitates, knowing that Andrew is awesomer (yes, that is a word) than he is. Reaches forward, grabs Andrew..... and gets utterly destroyed as Andrew uses his amazing forum-fighting skills to annihilate him**

Or, from mine:
**Notices Kaz is trying be cool and grab me, promptly turns and destroys him**

If you want any of us to believe anything you say, you'll have to make it a little closer to the truth. For instance, you could have me utterly destroying you, but then in your much weakened state, you trip me, causing me some minor embarrassment, or something of that sort.

[/egotistical and really rather prideful rant]

So let me make sure I have this right.

Chuck Norris signed Robert Jordan's copy of Star Wars with Kaz's pen?

I don't know if anyones heard yet or knows anything about this but I've just seen in a well known London sci-fi store actual signed copies of the gathering storm by Robert Jordan. The books aren't actually signed themselves but they have a signed card from orbit books stuck on the page before the printed signiture. It looks like orbit must had some cards left over from a previous signing or Mr Jordan signed some in advanced before he unfortunately past away. Anyone know anything about them?

I recently saw a copy of Path of Daggers with the same Robert Jordan signature.  I was wondering if it was real or fake, because I thought these printed signatures only started with a Gathering Storm!

Man, I would have loved to get me one of those copies.  I really want a Robert Jordan bookplate.

The printed signatures did start with TGS.  Anything printed prior to that with a signature is genuine or a really good forgery.  Since I haven't heard of anyone forging his signature, chances are good that it's genuine.  Most of my signed WoT books I acquired after his death so they are still circulating.

I'll have to go back to the store and look at it more closely.  There was really bad lighting in the section I was in, but the signature did not look like any kind of ink I ever saw out of a pen.  It was dark grey like the one you see on TGS, and there wasn't any kind of impression on the other side of the page, which would be normal when you press down to sign something on a piece of paper.   For the record I don't think it's a forgery, since the book wasn't being sold as a collector's item, but just as any other used book.  At the same time I don't know what to make of the signature.

P.S. I've since examined my own copy of TGS and noticed that the signature has jagged edges on it.  I'll compare my discovery with what I saw at the store, but I'm still skeptical of any signature written in dark grey ink.

Ink can fade over time depending on what kind of ink it is.

If you really want to tell, bring a magnifying glass. Look at your TGS and you will see dots. That's the jaggedness.

Yes, I suppose it makes sense to bring a magnifying glass with me.   Hopefully it'll still be there when I get back.  I don't expect it to sell, but you never know.  Thanks for the idea; I did use it on TGS and I saw the dots.
