Title: Warbreaker :: Release Party :: Extras
Post by: Miyabi on May 25, 2009, 11:12:25 PM
firstRainbowRose (Mi'chelle) and I (Chris) are planning some extra things for the Warbreaker release party.

We will have nametags for you TWGers.

We will have soda.

If everyone tries to bring an extra $2.50 we could order in some pizza for foodage.

Also I will be giving away a numbered copy of Mistborn: Hero of Ages (number 562).

Giving away will be done through people answering  a trivia quiz about EUOLs books.  I would like suggestions for questions along with the answers, please PM or email them to me that way they aren't just on the forums.

Those who get the highest scores (if there is a tie) will have their names put in a hat and we will draw for a winner.

This should extend through all the people that show up, until we run out of copies of the quiz.  After we hand out the last one, we will give an hour or so for people to finish them then we will start to correct them to weed out those who didn't do well.

We are also planning to have names to be drawn to create your "reborn (is that the right word?  Sorry I'm rushing I have to leave for work soon) name".  Suggestions for those could be PMed or email to firstRainbowRose.

Your help is much appreciated, also, if you have any other suggestions, please feel free to post them here or PM one of us.

Hope to see you all there!

Just to do some clarification, the names are going to be as follows:

In honor of Lightsong's line about their names being chosen by a monkey pulling paper out of a hat, that's what we'll do ('cept you'll pull your own name).  I will have three hats and that will make up your name.

So to use book characters:

Light+Song+Brave=Lightsong the Brave
Mercy+Star+whatever=Mercystar the whatever she is.

So if you have suggestions, please make sure to keep them in that type of format (the names don't have to be combos like that, since they'll just be chopped up.)  I'm also planning on having some odd ones like "Flower" or "Dead" or "Silly" so you could end up being "Deadflower the Silly".

I'm kind of wondering how much of a party this will be. If its in the BYU bookstore there really isn't a lot of mingle room. Is there going to be another room somewhere for people to hang out at, etc?
Title: Re: Warbreaker :: Release Party :: Extras
Post by: firstRainbowRose on May 26, 2009, 02:46:53 AM
Well, if this is in the same place as HoA, then we'll be really close to a set of doors that lead outside to a quad type area.  It's really big and we could easily set stuff up there.  Plus, there was a bit of room in the bookstore to do some stuff.  (Again, at least where we were.  I mean there was a group of, what, about ten of us all hanging out at the front of the line and we were just fine.  And are there really going to be more then ten or fifteen of us?  If not, please let us know so we can start to plan accordingly.)

There aren't that many people on the forums. I'd say fifteen is a good estimate.

Do you guys plan on being there for the whole duration?

Well, Chris had decided he's going to sleep out.  I'm planning on joining him.

I will be there the full duration of the event.

You guys are sleeping out? Wow.  :o

Keep a lookout for me. I'll be the one speeding by on a bike and throwing water balloons. ;D

Lol, nice try but the road isn't anywhere close to where we'll be. . . at least, not that I remember. ha ha.

If you plan on camping outside the BYU Bookstore, you'll definitely be in range of my bicycle-bourn waterbombs of doom. Mwahahaha!

(I am, of course, kidding. I'm far too lazy to try and lug water balloons up to campus on my bike.)

Just FYI this year there will not be a long line of people waiting to get books signed.  Instead when you show up you get a number and a book that's all ready signed (and numbered) and then when your number group is called (say 1-50) you go up and have the chance to get the book personalized.

So what this means is hanging outside might be a bad idea since you could miss your number call but on the plus side there will probably be pockets of people hanging out until their number is signed.  They'll also probably keep the area around Brandon clear of groups so those that have their numbers called can line-up.

The way Brandon explained it it sounded like there would still be a line people stand in before 5:00 and they hand out the books to everyone in line in order at 5:00. Then if they want it personalized they can go to Brandon in small groups when they're called. So getting a low number still requires lining up early.

But the having groups of numbers called actually makes this whole thing work out better because then people won't be overly worried about moving out of line after they get their book.

I plan on making the drive out there from Nevada.  I actually just took the time off and got everything squared away.

I saw this the other day, and thought I should reply...but I realized that I had locked myself out of my account due to password difficulties.  All figured out now.  :P

I'm going to be bringing a friend or two along as well.  I can't wait to meet Brandon!

Okay, so just so I can plan the right amount of sugary yummies, exactly who is coming and who isn't?  (miyabi, chaos, and little_wilson, I know you're coming so don't worry about saying so.)

I'm maybe coming. I will know Friday.

I'm also a maybe. Like I said, the evil homework monster is my master. If he says I can go, I'll be there.

Yeah, I'll have an update around Fridayish as well.  To be honest, I really don't want to make the drive from here to Provo by myself, especially since my car is '97, and though I believe it would make it...it may try to murder me when I'm through.

I'll be there with Karen and Elizabeth.

I'll be there, maybe by myself, maybe with a friend.

Well, it seems to look like I'm no longer going to be able to make this. :(  All of my friends have other things that they have to do, and well, I'm not 100% comfortable driving down by myself with my 97 sentra...

If anyone else lives in Nevada, and is interested in carpooling, shoot me a PM.  But as it stands now, it looks like I'm going to my local Barnes and Noble and picking it up Tuesday.

Hey, at least I have Tuesday and Wednesday off to read the final revision through.  ;D

I also cannot come. I decided that $100 in gas to drive from Portland to Provo--one way--was too expensive. Alas.

You could fly down to Salt Lake City and have someone pick you up from the airport and drive the 45 mins to Provo for not much more than that.

I also will not be there. It's probably for the best. Skipping the first day of class wouldn't have been the smartest thing I've ever done even if meeting all of you cool people would've made up for the skipping...kind of... ::)

It's rainy in Provo today, with rain forecast for tomorrow. Hope you campers bring a tent. ;D

So since I can't go to the release party, I checked at the bookstore here at BYU-I, to see if they would be getting the book in sometime this week. They checked and yes, they are ordering it. One copy....I was rather surprised. Only one? Really?...Oh well. I gave them my name, and so now I've got a hold on it. Go me. Now I can help those release week sales at least a bit...and then get the personalization when he tours later in the year (and hopefully hear an excerpt of Way of Kings).

Anyway, have fun you release party people! I hope it's a blast. I also hope it doesn't rain on you. That wouldn't be very cool. Rain is cool, but raining on you...not so much.

It looks like I will be able to make the release party tonight. Should get there around 7:00.

Ookla, do you think Brandon will read anything from Way of Kings? That would be AWESOME!
Title: Re: Warbreaker :: Release Party :: Extras
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on June 09, 2009, 06:25:52 PM
Brandon said he will probably be too busy personalizing people's books to actually read anything. He will be doing readings from Way of Kings at some of the other signings in the next couple weeks.

That was what I meant. I can't go to the release party, but I also won't be in Utah the next couple of weeks. I'm hoping (maybe it's a vain hope...who knows?) that when he tours later in the year--November, December--he might read an excerpt there...maybe...Even if he doesn't, I can still get the personalization, so...yeah.
Title: Re: Warbreaker :: Release Party :: Extras

The Gathering Storm signings may be too packed to do any readings, and if they're not, I would guess that he'd be more likely to read from The Gathering Storm itself. Of course he will sign any of his books at them though.

Geez, Ook, you're crushing my dreams.....haha. No. I knew it was a vain hope. I'd heard that the tour at the end of the year was for WoT, but I still kind of...hoped. Even if I knew it would never really happen.

Just got back from the party. Got my book, met Brandon, didn't see anyone else. :(

Actually, I suppose that's not quite true. I may well have seen you, you may have even commented on my shirt (it says "Mind of a ninja, body of a manatee"), but I don't know what anyone looks like and there were too many people there to go asking everyone, "Are you from Timewaster's Guide?"

Also, I did recognize Ookla, but only because Brandon made him draw the names for the drawing. :)

I was there too. I was with my sister and her husband, though..

It wasn't nearly as crowded as the HoA release.

Ryos, I saw you there. I thought to myself "I have got to get me one of those shirts." Miyabi, firstRainbowRose and I were chatting by the bestsellers after we got our books personalized. Miyabi was #2 AND he had his Japanese edition of Elantris signed and numbered #1. Pretty awesome!

Okay, I did see you. Cool. :)

You know, Ookla, you're right, I should have. It just looked like you were busy and I didn't want to be a bother. Next time!

Also, I didn't realize the Sheldon store was practically sold out of manatee shirts. D'oh! Check back in a couple weeks, I'm sure they'll have more. :)

I was standing next to fRR in a white and black striped hoodie.

BTW, I got the book thing out of the way before Brandon started all his stuff.  And at that time the only person was Grant (V for Vendetta) so I gave it to him.

(Mi'chelle and I went up and down the line up until shortly before the signing started and there was basically no one from TWG at that point.)

I still have an entire cooler full of soda. ha ha.

EDIT:  Anyone else like that it said "Companion novel to Elantris" on the signs?

Ya, I got a chuckle out of that.

I must have missed you guys. I got there around 7:20 and the crowd was gone. Me and 2 other guys were able to talk with B. Sanderson pretty casually towards the end. He told us some pretty cool stuff about Way of Kings!  ;D

I'm way jealous. I wanted to stay too, except for my sister....

So I was the 15-year-old that stood next to Brandon Sanderon for 5 minutes and asked him questions  ;)

And I honestly couldn't tell you what I was wearing yesterday.... My mind is so brain dead.....

Link to the shirt. (http://www.sheldoncomics.com/store/books.html) It's even on sale!

Thanks for the link.  I'm obsessed with South Park, so this is pure gold.  ;D  Oddly enough, I don't have any South Park shirts...  I'll need to remedy that this summer.

I'm so sad that I didn't get to go to this.  What's even worse is some of my friends felt like they betrayed me, because, without a doubt, they know that Brandon is one of  my favorite writers.  Oh well, one day.

P.S. - I went and bought it first thing on Tuesday morning (I still had work off for Tue and Wed that was supposed to be for the release party) and I sat down and read the first fifth of it in the store.  And, of course, due to reading it several times through the revisions, I flipped around here and there searching for some of my favorite moments.  :P  Our B&N only ordered like twelve or fourteen copies, or something like that.  All three of the big BS fans I know around here had all pre-ordered two books each.  One for them, one for me.

We shall take all the Brandon books in Reno!

They are ours, I say!
