Title: Casting Call blog
Post by: gharper on December 23, 2008, 10:11:33 PM
Hey everyone, I've recently started a blog that provides a Casting Call of my dream cast for whatever book I'm reading. Right now I'm working on some of my recent favs and I just finished a Mistborn entry. Take a look (http://dream-casting.blogspot.com/2008/12/mistborn-trilogy.html)!

Ok so I guess i will start with saying that I really liked some of your pics. I also liked the way it was set up. My main question is. . .  didn't you get that kolos pic from the fan art thread??? I know I saw it there but I dont really want to go looking for it.

Yep, it sure is.

Abominable, I love your choice on Vin.  Ellen Page has already got the smart-ass'ness down.  :p

Very good choices all around, except for Elend. Your choice is too pretty, I think. :)

I like your choice for Vinn and Kelsier. Just how I thought they look. Also I like your choice for Ham, Breeze and the entire crew especially Dox. I like them all. I don't know about Elend and Sazed though. Lord Ruler is perfect for the actor. What about the person who plays Lord Renox? (typo)

I agree with the comment on Elend. Ryan Gosling is a little too pretty....and old. (I'm sorry, I'm big on age with actors and roles....I think that a 30 year old shouldn't be playing a 20 year old if there's plenty of 20 year olds available....which there are..and I know Ryan's not 30. He's only 28, but still. Close enough.)

I like nearly all the other actors chosen. Never considered Gerard Butler for Kelsier, but....wow. I can see that. He'd do a good job. Love Gerard. He rocks. I also never would've pegged Colin Firth as Dox, but that one works well too. Of course, that just might be the picture, but still.

I'm not sure about Stanley Tucci for Breeze. Age-wise, he's close to being right (I imagined Breeze around 40, and Tucci's 48), but appearance, I don't know. Tucci's bald, and Breeze, I'm pretty sure, has a head of black hair, and maybe it's starting to turn gray (I can't remember exactly). Plus, Tucci's not exactly on the 'plump' side. Breeze is....(I'm pretty sure)

The rest of the actors are pretty darn good (Marsh? Great. Skarsgard as TLR? Awesome. And I laughed at Ben Foster as Zane. Good choice), but the one I love is Spook. Oh. My. Word.....Perfect. I haven't been able to find a good Spook yet, but now my search is over....Bravo.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I admit that I'm not too keen on Stanley Tucci as Breeze. I pictured someone with a full head of hair and with a little more heft to him as well, but I was trying to finish the post and Tucci was my favorite. I really should go back and revise that one. Any ideas?

I'm going to stick with Ryan Gosling though. He may be too pretty for the first book, but I think after Elend starts training with Ham, cuts his hair, wears "The Emperor's New Clothes"...he starts to look pretty badass. So we need someone who could a believable transition from a scholar to a warrior and I think he fits the bill.  Have you seen him in Fracture? He was just plain CUT. (First time I saw what Rachel McAdams saw in him. ) Also, he bears a strong resemblance to Ben Foster, making them believable brothers.

It might be just my computer, but for some reason, the link doesn't work for me.…Would you happen to know why?

Sorry about that. I updated the link (due to Mistborn not being on the front page anymore) and left a pesky forward-slash after the URL that was jacking it up. Its fixed now.

Thanks! Wow, they really are great.…Actually, I don't mind Stanley Tucci as Breeze–I found the character of Breeze slightly similar to the role Stanley played in 'The Devil Wears Prada' (it is the same man, right?) I thought Stanley did a good job as Nigel, so I think Breeze would be good, too.… Vin I thought was fantastic, Kelsier and Dox, ditto. Actually, the two who bothered me a little were Ham and Clubs. I just pictured Clubs to be a little more "rough-and-tough," I guess.

Overall, though, fantastic job.

Ideas for Breeze. I actually haven't found a really good Breeze yet. I haven't been looking a whole lot lately, though. I really should start that back up again. And I haven't found the perfect Elend, but I do think that Julian Morris is pretty good. I think he's also a little too pretty/cute for the role though...Although to be honest, I really like Elend and if he were real, I'd probably find him good-looking, so...yeah.

Hmm. Just fiddling around on imdb, and I came across Kevin James. He's not perfect for Breeze, but he's not bad either. Definitely better than some ideas I've seen (and I'm not really referring to Tucci, just others that I've seen overall). I'll keep searching though. I'm sure there's better actors.

Kevin James, huh? I don't know, he kind of looks the part, but I don't think he could pull off Breeze's personality.

I think I've come across a great one though. For a while I was thinking maybe Andy Sirkis.  I liked him better than Tucci, but then I came across an actor I'd love to see in the role, Eddie Izzard. He pretty much looks the part, he can definitely play the aristocratic gentleman with that twist of humor that Breeze brings. What do you think?

Andy Serkis? That's funny. I came across him too, but then I decided probably not. He could do it, but....I don't know. It would be weird for me, knowing he did Gollum, and seeing him doing Breeze.

And Eddie Izzard....Wow. I just looked at him, and oh my flipping gosh. He's incredible. He looks almost EXACTLY like how I pictured Breeze.

How about Sting as the Lord Ruler.

Now you are just getting into DUNE territory.

I like Ham as the guy who plays him (forgot his name) but that's a REALLY good choice for him. Roundish head, big smile all big muscle. Just right for a pewter burner.

I'll be honest, not thrilled with some of your choices.
The main ones being:
Vin and Elend

While I LOVE Ellen Page, I just don't see her as Vin
And while I really enjoy Ryan Gosling.... just he is not Elend.

I have a major beef with Gerard Butler as Kelsier. Okay, I have a major beef with Gerard Butler period because he ruined the movie version of Phantom of the Opera but that not withstanding and still on the subject of meat, he's too beefcakey, gruff, and swarthy for Kelsier, IMO.

I see Kelsier as being... "foppish" isn't the right word but it's the only thing coming to mind at the moment. Someone like David Wenham  (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0920992/), Ewan McGregor, maybe even David Boreanz.

I could see David Wenham playing the part of Kelsier, but…I don't know about the two.……… :-\ :-\
