If your favorite isn't listed here, chime in and I'll add it.

Can I pick two?? Give me some fresh warm bread and a bowl of candied yams and I am one happy man.

Gotta go with the turkey! Eat about....oh....say 5 pounds of that and then sleep for 72 hours. There's nothing better than a Thanksgiving "nap".

Pie! Lots and lots of pie. Oh, and I do so enjoy the cranberry sauce, yes, straight out of the can.

And mashed potatoes and gravy!

Turkey is ok, but defintely comes in an easy fourth on this list :)

Turkey, rolls, and pie!  And potatoes comes in a very close fourth.  I love a holiday where I have an excuse to stuff myself like a pig! :D

Dang it! I forgot about pie. So much better than cake (which of course is a lie). I will definitely fight you for blueberry pie. En guarde!

Ha! I love working in references to Portal :D Especially to the uninniciated :)

Blueberry is indeed good. I'll basically eat ANY pie that is not pumpkin.

Pumkin is not a flavor for treats. Would you eat sweet Zuccinni Pie? or some other squash in a dessert?  No. As a main dish, without any sugar involved, yeah. But bleh.....a dessert? yikes...

Oh come on wheres the stuffing? I love me some good stuffing. I mean I love it all but really? No mashed potatoes or corn? Both traditional. I mean especially corn. Come on man. Im kidding but Stuffing gets my vote.

I'm disgusted and appalled that Cream Corn didn't get it's due mention!

Seriously, I'm just kidding.

Cranberry sauce is awesome though. Get the syrupy stuff and drizzle it over a cheesecake... yummmmm...

My second is potatoes & gravy, homemade red mashed potatoes and beef or turkey gravy, toss in a bit of gralic and onion powder, maybe some chives or oregano.

I do agree that Pumpkin has no place in desert-land...or in beer for that matter. Both appearances make me sick to my stomach. Your post reminds me of what Calvin eats for breakfast =).

I think the only place that a pumpkin has is at the hands of crazed childeren with hands full of knives. Also fried pumkin seeds are pretty good as long as you salt them properly.

But guys, that is why they developed and bred a special kind of pumpkin for pies.....Sugar Pumpkins. They are smaller, darker, and the flesh of the pumpkin has a much sweeter flavor, without sugar added, than normal pumpkins, which I would tend to agree have no place in dessert land, or beer land either. I personally like pumpkin pie, but it is by no means my favorite pie, blueberry takes that honor. To each their own though, and as I said, I see where you are coming from.

My favorites, would be turkey, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes and gravy.....I could live with just those three for dinner. :)

Pecan and pumpkin are possibly two of the greatest pies bestowed unto mankind by the great gods of pie-dom.

Thanksgiving is always a mixed blessing for me, as the main food preparer.  I like to cook a big feast once in a while, but apart from turkey and pecan pie, I don't like the traditional foods. Pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, cranberry, a lot of the kinds of stuffing I've had.  So I assign other people to make/bring those.  I do make great green beans though, sauteed with butter, garlic and a few almonds.  Yummy!

Out of the can??!! I make it a point never to eat something that takes the shape of the container it was in. My grandfather makes this amazingly good cranberry relish.

Also my grandmother makes a delicious corn pudding, covered in brown sugar. Mhmhm good.

It always seems like such a shame in America that we have this great holiday where people who would never dream of being a chef go out there and discuss the merits of leaving stuffing in the turkey the entire time or taking it out, whether brining makes a difference, and how long the gravy needs to simmer, and yet they will still consider it a great tradition to eat canned cranberry jelly.

Hey lets not knock things that remain in the shape of a can too much. I for one will happily eat a can of corned beef hash any day of the week. Frankly I would eat it every day of the week if I could and not die. This doesnt mean that I dont like home made hash but the stuff from a can is amazing.

Apple is largely overrated in my book. I've once had a pie that had the necessary flavor to make it interesting, and that was made from a special variety of apples left an extremely sour taste, while being terribly sweet.

Pumpkin, Rhubarb, and Pecan, and even Boston Creme (done right), are easily my favorites for how wonderfully unique and beautiful their flavors are and what good (or just creative) bakers can do with them. Then again, that's right along with my culinary philosophy of Gastro-Ninjitsu.

Not according to the polls it doesnt. People may be picky about their pie but they enjoy other parts of the meal more.

That is because you might get pie at other times of the year, but when do you get cranberry sauce, roast turkey or those nasty sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top?  My family, for example, just downed two pumpkin pies because my 1st grader brought home a pumpkin from school and insisted we make pies with it.
Title: Re: What is your favorite Thanksgiving foods?

That is a valid point. There are dishes involved that are very seasonal. Now don't get me wrong I can eat potatoes almost any way you can cook them. I grew up on a nice diet of some form of potatoes with every meal so I have a good amount of experience. I have heard tell of these potatoes with marshmellow on top. I have never witnessed this travesty for myself thank god. Who could take part in such a disgusting practice? I hope never to experience this horrid dish.
Title: Re: What is your favorite Thanksgiving foods?

It's not potatoes, but "sweet potatoes" (American yams), Monsta.

I'm not a big fan of the sweet potato and marshmellow casserole, but I love the pecan-topped yam casserole that's a tradition in my family.  It's delicious!

No one has mentioned my favorite pie yet, so I'll bring it up:  Banana cream.  For me, a Thanksgiving without a banana cream pie just wouldn't be Thanksgiving.  But I love only my grandma's recipe: I've never tasted another banana cream pie remotely as good.  I do like Pecan, though (not as much as banana cream, of course).  Never been a fan of pumpkin, though Grandma also had a good pumpkin pie recipe.

I'm surprised not more people are going for the Jello Salads—I know we have a lot of Mormons around here.  Do other people just have no good recipes, or is having 2-5 Jello Salads not a standard part of everyone else's Thanksgiving?
Title: Re: What is your favorite Thanksgiving foods?
Post by: Loud_G on November 14, 2008, 05:37:52 PM
Please do not equate Jello Salad with Mormons.... *shudders*

That seems to be an oddity of the Utah and Idaho branch of the church. Us east coast Mormons can't understand why anyone would have that much jello when they weren't sick/vomiting....

Cranberry Sauce, hands down. I could eat barrels of that stuff.

And I guess my family is weird when it comes to Thanksgiving, we have never had turkey. We always have duck. /shrug

Don't get me wrong, roasted duck is exquisite when cooked right. Actually the only time I had turkey on Thanksgiving was when I was in the military, stuck on gate sentry duty and some people were nice enough to bring us some food.  :D

That was nice of them =).

I get to cook again this year. Actually making a dish that normally is reserved for Easter-time, but my sister has been hounding me about it. Macaroni Pie, or Mugliazzo.

Yeah, it was nice, even though our "supervisors" said we weren't allowed to receive food at the gates because if someone saw us eating on post it would be construed as "unprofessional." We did it anyway.  :D

Its something to run from as quick as you can. It generally involves green (lime) jello, carrot shavings, and other things that should not be mixed.

Bacon needs to be on this list.  My mom cooks her turkey with bacon draped across it.  The bacon tastes so yummy.

Usually, I would vote for pie, but this year I'm expected to make some. That has quickly made pie my least favorite Thanksgiving food.  I've never made a pie. I had thought I would go a few more years before the terror was forced on me.

Pie is easy if you cheat and buy the crusts. That is the hard part.  I've never been able to get a crust that looks nice, even if it tastes OK.

ThankSigyn:  Isn't bacon-wrapped Turkey still just one way of making Turkey?

MrPaperHandTurkey: Did your mom go through with it?

Louds_of_Gravy:  Clearly you've never had a real Jello Salad.  Some of them are exquisite.  Oh, and I'm not from Idaho or Utah, but my family has a strong Jello Salad tradition—we have very deep Mormon roots, however, and some great recipes.

PlantationMonsta & Reaves:  Jello Salad is a concoction made with Jello and other ingredients, always involving at least one additional fruit or vegetable (and frequently several).  The simplest Jello Salads are made from just Jello with fruit included for additional texture and flavour.  More complicated Jello Salads involve adding fruit juices, using layers, or even more complicated recipes with exotic ingredients.  In my family, it is traditional (and an excellent tradition, I might add) to serve any Jello Salad which does not include a dairy ingredient with home-made whipped cream.  The one exception to this is Orange Carrot Jello Salad (which, for the record, is not for everyone.  It's my brother's favorite, but I'm not a huge fan of it).

readerMom:  My fiancée is a pie-crust master.  It 's wonderful.  It's also somewhat strange.  Granted the recipe is my grandmother's, and an excellent recipe, but my mother has a terrible time making the crusts.  My fiancée, who was born in China and raised eating 95% Chinese food, has taken to my grandmother's recipes like a natural.  Really makes me happy.  She's busy this year, but I'm begging her to make me 2-3 pie crusts so I can make Grandma's banana cream pies.  Last year, she (my fiancée) made 15 pie crusts for Thanksgiving, I believe.  I think that one day she'll reach my grandmother's production levels (my grandma used to make about 30 pies each thanksgiving, in addition to a bunch of other stuff).

I think you are born with it or not. I'm a not, which is sad because I like to cook, and make a mean cheescake, but not pies.  Of course, my main audience would eat any crust so long as it contained something sweet, so I'm okay with it.

My children demand cakes for birthdays and then just lick off the frosting.  But my nine year old has gotten smarter.  He wanted key lime pie last birthday, and cheesecake for the next one.  I have a white chocolate/chocolate recipie that is marvelous.

Growing up we always had cakes, and I don't think we would have had it any other way. This is because my mother would create the cake in the form of something like a ninja turtle or a fish or a rocketship or whatever.

So a pie, while it might TASTE better, wouldn't be as fun. :)

We only got a very small turkey because we weren't expecting to have company, but as it turned out my stepdad and my niece came over for Thanksgiving, so we had absolutely no leftovers at all. It was very sad.

I like to do ham or prime rib for Christmas. :) We should start a Christmas recipe thread. I make an amazing glaze for my ham, with some rather interesting ingredients.

My family often does a traditional irish cornedbeef and cabbage dinner for christmas. It is so good. I would also like lamb, ribs and or ham but you cant mess with corned beef.
