Title: Buy Dan Bacon?
Post by: Nessa on November 11, 2008, 08:56:49 PM
There's a story here. I demand to know what it is (re: your link off the Writing Excuses website).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/2KB8VTV693ZPC

And don't tell me you just like bacon. That's a cop-out.

(I will say that I was laughing.out.loud at that list. Amusing on so many levels.)

I am feeling some serious love for that bacon wallet, man. It holds your money and it tastes good!

The only story here is that Brandon and Howard have books to sell, and I don't, so instead of a "buy's Dan's stuff" link under my author bio, there's a link to this wish list. And it works, too--so far I've received a wallet, an air freshener, some mints, some bandaids, a saint, and a T-shirt. All the REAL Dan fans are doing, and so should you.

I have never seen so much bacon inspired stuff in my life....I could have looked I suppose, but, I must not like bacon as much as Dan. ;) And the car air fresheners? Do they really smell like bacon? I love the list though, it is a treasure trove of gift ideas for you, and for  people in my own family. :)

The bacon air freshener is arguably the worst-smelling thing in the world. Imagine cardboard that has somehow gone bad, and then been left in a hot car all day. It is completely awesome.

I actually laughed out loud to that. Thank you. I guess the only thing I can ask is, do we need to get you everything on the list so you can write us a product review?

I imagine that keeps you from having to give rides to people unless it is an complete and utter emergency. ;) And I'm not sure how "arguably the worst-smelling" equates to "completely awesome", but somehow I'm sure you will explain it so that it makes sense.

That is the craziest compillation of items I have ever seen. And the fact that they can all be bought in ONE place is...well...AMAZING! :D

Imagine Footloose with biking instead of dancing and set in New York instead of Lehi.  You get the idea.

A. Bacon. Wallet. Bwahahahahahhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Oh, my. You can actually bring home the bacon in more ways than one. Oooh, and the bacon & eggs cufflinks are spiffy.

But, hang on one second, Fell. I seem to recall that EUOL's arch nemesis has a very worshipful relationship with bacon. Are you joining together with the force of evil known as SCALZIIIIIIIIIIIIII?
Title: Re: Buy Dan Bacon?

It's people who DON'T have a strong relationship with bacon that you should be worried about.

I must admit that my relationship with bacon as taken a turn for the worse. Not long ago I eat some bacon that was under cooked and was sick. After that I find it hard to trust bacon again, no matter how many times it apologizes for its wrong doings. I know that I should learn to forgive bacon, but I can’t. I’m a horrible person with trust issues.  :'(

I am sure I will get called an anathema for this one, but I don't really like bacon all that much. It can definitely accent flavors well, but overall I generally prefer something else.

Just a heads up, Dan, bacon floss is coming to your house very soon. Amazon tells me it should arrive on the 20th (today) or up until the 25th. You'll get it just in time for Thanksgiving! It should be freakishly perfect, I think.

It's been a while since I've laughed that hard...Wow. It helped that pretty much every comment just heightened the humor...

And Fell, that comment about the air freshener? Classic. Ending on the "completely awesome" almost made me fall off my chair--which wouldn't have been good since I'm in the university library. Methinks I would've got some odd looks....Oh well. Woulda been worth it. It was HI-larious.

Man, now I'm craving bacon....

The Bacon Floss has arrived, and man, is it bacony. We could smell it through the package (which, incidentally, has the slogan: "Mmmm! Leaves mouth bacon fresh!"). Fell point for you, Chaos.

So, I just went over to the turkey my mom was basting... There were two slices of bacon on top of it.

"Bacon?" I said.
"Yeah, I've seen recipes do that," she said. "The bacon fat is supposed to make it better by..."

I didn't quite hear what came next, because I was too busy laughing, thinking what a great thing to post here.

Fell, if your turkey doesn't have bacon on it, you should be ashamed of yourself!
Title: Re: Buy Dan Bacon?

Sometimes our enjoyment of a thing is made better by its absence.

Wow, I feel impressed. I came up with that all by myself.

I didn't quite hear what came next, because I was too busy laughing, thinking what a great thing to post here.

I know this feeling. Quite well, actually....Yesterday (I posted this somewhere else on here, but I'll repeat myself) I opened the microwave to heat some food up, and there was bacon in there. I'm like 'huh?' And then I started laughing, because I remembered this Bacon thread....and The Wedding thread with all the bacon....And then this morning, I woke up and my grandpa (we drove to my grandparents for thanksgiving) was cooking bacon! Which made me laugh again. I haven't had bacon for a LONG time, and then I get it two days in a row....it was awesome.

...

I am never going to be able to take bacon seriously again.

The next time I have the opportunity, I'm sure I'll be too busy sniggering 'cause it's bacon to actually eat it...
Title: Re: Buy Dan Bacon?
Post by: Fellfrosch on December 03, 2008, 07:31:57 PM
By the way: the bacon floss was actually pretty flavorless, despite the smell, but it was so fibrous and flimsy that I actually had to use normal floss afterward to get the shreds of bacon floss out of my teeth. But honestly, there's pretty much no sympathy for the statement "I used bacon floss and had an unpleasant experience," so I suppose I got what I deserved. Still, though, it's awesome just to have, and functions as a delicious air freshener.

I'm wondering if, however, such a finding is made of win enough to warrant a Fell point.

I read a very interesting article in the Time magazine talking about bacon in deserts. What is this madness, you say? So I thought until I saw the picture. Description went something like this: "Brioche with a bang. Banana and ice cream with bacon crumbles." It looked like some kind of creamy bread with a slice of bacon on top, with vanilla ice cream on the side covered in tiny bits of bacon. And man, it looked good.

Sounds good to me.  Just another twist on the idea of blending salty and sweet.  I already love chocolate-covered pretzels and slightly-sweet, slightly-salty kettle corn, not to mention classics like the old PB&J, so why not ice cream and bacon?

Wow, Baconnaise as a deal of the day. That's a positively scary thought.

So, two days ago I ordered the fried chicken at a sit-down restaurant. It came with a biscuit which had country gravy on it. You know what was on top of the country gravy? Bacon. Not bacon bits, either; it was actual cooked bacon chopped into manageable segments.

I now heartily support all the vendors of country gravy to adopt this tactic. It is brilliance.

Bacon update! A few nights ago, while I was making one of America's greatest convenience foods, baked ravioli (just raviolis baked instead of boiled, no sauce drowning), my sister walked into the kitchen. She had been lured to the kitchen by the smell of the bacon that I had just devoured. She asked me if I was baking bacon ravioli, which is partially unusual because she despises puns, but mostly unusual because my head exploded and imploded at that moment. These effects canceled each other out, but left in my head a most glorious purpose: to create the greatest baked bacon ravioli the world has ever known.

Two days later, I am here to pronounce the mission a success! After many experiments and probably more bacon than is healthy to eat, the baked bacon ravioli kebab stole my heart. It is so delicious, it makes my insides hurt just thinking about it. Horsey sauce optional. I'll take some pictures and post them before the week is out.

You had me at bacon ravioli, but then when you added horsey sauce I became a true believer.

Baking the ravioli for about 10 minutes on 300. The knobs say different because I just slid the tray in, silly!

Cooking the bacon until it's not deadly to eat, but still soft enough to have no issues with wrapping. If you do this with turkey bacon there's no need for this part, as it cooks supa-fast.

This recipe works fine without the kebab skewers, but the bottom gets kinda soggy if you don't use them. Bake for 10 minutes at 400 degrees after adding the bacon. Broiling works better if you're using a pan underneath.

Time to flip! If you don't mind dripping grease in your cooking apparatus, and said apparatus has heating elements top and bottom, there's no need to do this part. Put the stuff back in for another 10 at 400 after flipping.

Hooray! Kebabs!
I'd like to note that turkey bacon is actually pretty good with this. My sister refuses to do the real pig version. The bonus to going with turkey bacon is that it cooks quickly and uniformly, eliminating the need for the frying pan. Another thing my sister likes is taking the bacon off and just eating bacon flavored raviolis. It's nowhere near as good, but you can eat the bacon plain or with another dish afterward. You know, for those who are very economic with their bacon use. I guess.

The horsey sauce makes this stuff crazy (awesome), but I didn't like it on the turkey version. Enjoy!

There are restaurants that do that around here (Salt Lake). Salt City Burger Factory. It is awesome. This way you get bacon in every bite. I like to do what you mentioned, but add jalapeños into the burger as well. Jalapeños make everything better, especially when mixed with bacon.

Now I'm freaking starving.

Bacon-Chicken Farfalle

- 12 OZ farfalle
- 1/3 LBS finely diced bacon (It's easier to do if you freeze the bacon first and thaw it out after cutting.)
- 3/4 LBS cubed chicken breast (1/2 in.)
- 2 TBS olive oil
- 6 TBS butter
- 1 1/2 Cups white wine (If you don't cook using wine, I've listed a good substitute recipe below.)
- 2 TBS crushed red pepper
- 1 1/4 TBS chopped garlic

Cook bacon until it won't kill you on a 10-14 in. skillet. Remove bacon from skillet and replace it with olive oil. Heat olive oil, garlic, and red pepper to medium heat or slightly lower. Stir and allow some of the flavor to cook out of the garlic, depending on how strong you want that part of the flavor to be. Add bacon and chicken. Cook this mixture with the lid on for 5-10 minutes to make sure that the chicken is safe. This is a good time to start the pasta. Remove the lid and add wine and butter. Crank the skillet's temperature up as high as it can go and cook for 2-3 minutes while stirring. Turn the heat off if the pasta is finished. If it's not, leave it on low.

When the pasta's finished cooking, drain it and put the contents of the skillet into the pot. Add the pasta back in. Cook on medium to medium low (same temperature as you used for the topping) while stirring. No need to get too vigorous with the stirring. You're just making sure nothing sticks to the bottom. Cook until most of the oil is gone from the bottom of the pan (the pasta should be pretty well coated though) and serve.

Farfalle isn't necessary, it's just a good match for the cubed chicken. I wouldn't go with long loodles, but something like penne would work fine. I would like to note that this recipe smells rather odd, and I wasn't going to eat any of it until my family started enthusing about how delicious it was. My poor guinea pigs. They will eat anything I make them. This recipe fed four of us, but it's probably closer to a "feeds 6" recipe. Also worth mentioning: my parents are making me cook for them once a week now, on pain of eviction, because of this recipe. I kinda don't like the idea (it smells suspiciously like work), but I suppose it'll be motivation to make new recipes more often.

White Wine Substitute:

1 Cup apple juice
1/4 Cup raspberry apple juice (That makes it a 9:1 apple to raspberry ratio, for those who don't have the specific juices.)
2 TSP vinegar
1 1/2 TBS balsamic vinegar (If you use more than this, whatever you're making tastes like balsamic vinegar. I often use less than this.)

You can play with that mixture as much as you need to until you get a flavor you like. To change to red wine I switch out half a cup of apple juice for red grape juice and use less balsamic vinegar.

Add that one to your list for Baconfest, kids.

Maybe it was the combination of the Lagoon hamburgers I had earlier that day, the two japapeno, bacon, burger monstrosities, and that I took a two hour nap after eating them before work.  I woke up the most orchestral sounds my stomach has ever made.

So this coming sunday we're most likely gonna have a labor day thing. I plan on making the previously mentioned bacon burgers like i did before, with the afformentioned modification for jalapenos. I also plan on stuffing them with cheese of some form.

current ideas for cheese: Pepper jack, cheddar, feta, or cream cheese.

Not sure which i'll go with, so we'll see.

you may want to mix some egg in with them to hold the ingredients together. The one problem with our burgers was that they had trouble staying together.

yeah, that's what i did when i made the last burgers i mentioned, with just bacon in 'em, i mixed in an egg

though i might up the egg count, as the jalapeno might make things much more difficult to stick

yup - you also may just want to put a fried egg on top of the burger. it would be a terrific addition to the flavor.

i think i've decided on the cheese stuffing after talking to all those involved.

1/3 will be mozzerella stuffed, 1/3 will be cream cheese stuffed, and the last 1/3 will be mozzerella AND cream cheese stuffed.

Edit:
also, i suppose i will try to remember to snap some photos of the making and consuming of said burgers and post 'em here for you guys to see, and help any who need it with the how-to's on making them.

Ok, sorry for the double post, but I made the burgers for the BBQ tomorrow. Here's pics and instructions how to make em, if anyone wants it!!

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0036.jpg

Step 1: Dice bacon, the smaller the better. Cook in microwave until crisp, but not burnt

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0035.jpg

Step 2: Dice jalapenos. Again, the smaller the better, even more so with these.

 http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0037.jpg (http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0037.jpg)

Step 3: Spice beef to taste.

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0038.jpg

Step 4: Add jalapenos to beef

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0039.jpg

Step 5: Pour bacon grease on beef. This may brown it slightly, that's OK. Add diced bacon to beef

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0040.jpg

Step 6: Mix thoroughly

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0041.jpg

Step 7: Divide into roughly even shaped patties, gently add a small hole with a spoon

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u266/eerongal/CIMG0042.jpg

Step 8: Fill hole with desired type of cheese (in picture: Cream cheese and mozzarella). Cover with the remaining beef, and press down thoroughly to seal off patty.

Freeze overnight, or until ready to cook, then grill yourself up a delicious Burger!!

Step 9: Happy labor day weekend, everyone! Feel free to use this recipe at your BBQ!!

Those burgers look roughly the same as the ones Dan and I made. Did you end up putting egg into them? I assume it tasted awesome. If they tasted anything like ours, they made you giggle a bit while eating due to how guiltily good you felt while eating them. After all, something that good cant be healthy...

Dan and I are currently planning phase 2, and I really wish he'd post the photos of our own burgers on the grill.

Nah, i was unable to add egg, because our egg supply ended up being comandeered for potato salad and deviled eggs, but they held up well on their own (only lost one to cooking that fell apart, but it was on the lukewarm side of the grill that hadn't heated up too well, so it just slowly blobed into the grill itself.)

they were quite awesome. I like the ones that had mozzerella and cream cheese (i have to say, cream cheese suprised me on how good it was on these things) the best. stuffing them with cheese is a brilliant idea, FYI, and i'm sure it really helped in holding them together (since its like putting glue in the middle)

We also had some of my homemade chili at the BBQ, which i topped mine with, and it was great. I wont go into the full details, but I make it by making bacon, then browning the meat in the bacon grease, and adding the other ingredients right on top of the greasy beef.

Technically you arent supposed to eat any ground meat at anything less than medium (or medium well, not sure which) but i know plenty of people that do, though boiling or searing the meat before grounding it can greatly help reduce the risks of illness, if you plan to eat it as such, if you plan on cooking it immediately afterwards. (i, myself, like a nice, even medium, though on occasion i will eat it well or rare, pending on my mood)

Well, meat from any tainted animal should never be eaten, for that exact reason.

Also grinding it yourself doesn't matter as far as contamination goes. The reason is because contaminants are on the outside of the meat, not the inside. When you cook it, it kills off the bacteria and such on the outside, this is why rare steaks are OK to eat. When you grind it, you make the outside the inside as well, which spreads the contaminants uniformly (well, maybe not perfectly uniform). Though self grinding does allow you to take preventative measure before grinding to ensure it's as safe as possible, but if it's going to sit around a while before being used, then it's just as dangerous as pre ground meat (possible more so, depending on your preservation methods compared to the sealing process used in store)

Granted, this is ONLY a concern with any meat that has dangerous contaminants (like E. coli), but it's pretty tough to know if it's ok or not.
Title: Re: Buy Dan Bacon?
Post by: Patriotic Kaz on September 11, 2009, 09:16:53 PM
I only grind what i will immediately use... in like 10 minutes

Edit: flash freezing meat kills more bacteria than cooking which is why you can eat steak tar tar and sushi safely... so long as you live in a developed nation that is
Title: Re: Buy Dan Bacon?
Post by: Bookstore Guy on September 11, 2009, 09:36:21 PM
There is no doubt that the taste of the meat in the burger is important. If I can't taste the meat, what's the point? To me, simple lettuce, onion, and tomato doesn't add to the flavor of the meat. It doesn't make it special enough. I like finding the flavor combinations that make the meat seem even better. To me, for some reason the bacon & jalapeño does the trick. It just make the meat taste sooooooo good.

Crap. I'm hungry now.
Title: Re: Buy Dan Bacon?
Post by: sortitus on September 12, 2009, 03:52:08 AM
Almost anything can be good on a burger if used in the right combination. Tomatoes are the big exception I can think of. Tomatoes are never good on anything. Ice cream would be a bit iffy, but I'm sure somebody somewhere has managed to make a delicious burger with ice cream on it.

The biggest requirement for me (apart from meat preferences) is that my burger has to have lots of crispy, cool lettuce.

Has anyone tried applying the golden ratio to a beef/bacon burger? The golden ratio is nature's answer to everything except for cinema and television, in which case 16:10 is the answer.[hide]Sneaky readers may note that these numbers are nearly the same.[/hide]

A lot of people (particularly east of Utah) put cole slaw on burgers, which I've never tried but I think is brilliant. You get the juiciness of mayo, spiced up to give it flavor, and then the cabbage would give it an even better crunch than we normally get from lettuce. I need to try that.

Oh, Sort my buddy, I bet you won't eat mushrooms, either.  My weird kids won't touch a home grown tomato, either, and I just picked the first ripe one from my garden.  We get a lot of summer fog, here.

My best burger has diced onion and a seasoning called Spike that one can find at Whole Foods or any self-respecting health food store.  I have included pork sausage in meat loaf, but never hamburger.  I know a kid who almost died from E. coli, so the idea of raw bacon BBQ'd with ground chuck is a bit scary.  There is always that uncooked bit in the middle. . . .

His best sketch. ever.

IMHO hot pockets is the most hilarious. I die laughing every time I watch it and I've seen it at least a dozen times.

Dan, I was given a bacon idea at work.  We will need to try it in conjunction with jalapeño bacon burgers.

Grilled, marinated red onions wrapped in bacon.

That sounds absolutely wonderful.

Supposedly a buddy of mine is getting ground bacon this weekend for his birthday BBQ, because he wants to make *LITERAL* bacon burgers.  i'll let you cats know how it turns out (if he does get it)

in other news, last weeked, i obtained bacon jelly beans. They were completely and utterly TERRIBLE. (and they didn't taste a thing like bacon!)

If I can get it without the bacon scent, I'm there. I have yet to find an allegedly bacon-scented item that didn't smell completely horrible.
