Title: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on August 06, 2008, 05:52:29 PM

This topic is for any type of announcement you would like to make.  Whether it be good, bad, or ugly.  Sad, nostalgic, or happy.  Share with us the goings on in your life.

Quote
That as of approximately 4 minutes ago, I, Miyabi am now in the top 10 longest time spent on TWG!  You can check it out here. (http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?action=stats)  It's on the left side about half way down.

That was the original post I made on this topic.  Made on August 06, 2008, 10:52:29 AM.

I can't believe that it has made it to the level it has.  I never really expected this topic to get to be this long.  We are currently closing in on gaining a spot on top ten most replied to topics on TWG.

Thanks for taking it that far guys. =]

Actually she said, "And you're proud of that?" ha ha.  Oh I mean on the right side not the left.

But REALLY I should be much higher.  I've had an account for nearly 2 years, but I went on a hiatus for almost a year and a half.

We're pretty strict on what goes in the News section so I'm moving this.

Those stats aren't really super accurate since they're only for the past two years (when we switched to this forum software) and the forums have been around for about 6 years I believe.

I think if we had all 6 years SE would probably be #1

OH an update.

I found out today that I don't have to pay for college.  I'm getting paid to go! Wooo!

I find it amusing that this is pretty much Miyabi's celebration thread, and it's in the Rants section.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

That's partially what it's for.

Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Andrew the Great on September 09, 2008, 04:37:56 AM
That's partially what it's for.

Hence the "and stuff" part. I'm not questioning that it should be here, I just find it somewhat ironic.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on September 09, 2008, 06:14:22 AM
What makes it ironic?
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on September 09, 2008, 06:43:31 AM
It's a connotational irony, because "rants and stuff" is assumed to be all bad.

I randomly decided one day I was going to share my happiness with the TWG community and I made this thread.  Ha ha.  And I just post stuff that happens that I find good in my life. -insert a pointless smilie that rolls around-

I am extremely hyper tonight.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on February 11, 2009, 05:50:51 PM
SO, life is calming down and I am starting to feel better and I actually have time to live now. -sigh of relief-

I also am going to be active on TWG again.

I found out that I will have to move next summer in order to continue my college career, because the college I am going to only offers an associates in software engineering, though I think I'm going to change my major to game and simulation programming when I go to a different college.

Oh and as a side note: if you go the member list and organize by amount of posts. .  I am on the first page. :D

That is all the goodness for now. ha ha.

Miyabi, it looks now like you're shooting to oust Sprig out of his number 1 spot in Longest Time Spent on TWG....I didn't think someone would be able to do it so quickly, but I swear I looked at that thing just, like, 4 days ago and you were down at 12 days 10 hours, and now you're up to 18...It's insane. You're taking all my goals and shattering them. It hurts.  :'(
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

No, a couple weeks ago I was at 15 days 18hours. ha ha.

Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on February 23, 2009, 11:45:16 PM
Hm.  I dunno.  Ha ha.  I just know that last time I looked at the list I was at 15 days. . . BUT that doesn't mean that before that I was at less than that.

I have insomnia so I sit and refresh this page half the night while I'm doing other stuff.

Then I sit and refresh it while I'm in class.

And while I'm goofing around at home in the evening. xD
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

Yeah, I pretty much always have TWG up whenever I'm online (which is pretty much whenever my laptop is on...which is pretty much always...), but I always forget to come back and refresh the page. It's sad....

It's a screen resolution that allows you to put  a lot of stuff on your screen at the same time.

That sounds pretty cool. How long were you in Japan for?
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

It's a cultural thing.  If you aren't Japanese and someone asks if you speak you say 'a little.'  And if they compliment your Japanese you say 'that's not true, thank you.'

ha ha.

I was there for just part of the summer, but I totally loved it and want to go back SOOOO bad.

Yeah, traveling is one of my favorite…pastimeshobbiesactivities? I don't know. But I like it.  :D The food, the people, the culture/language, the sights…it's all just so…new and amazing!

What countries have you been to Shag?
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

Ummm…well I'm probably going to miss one or two, but…U.S.A. ( 8)), Costa Rica, Ecuador (Galapagos Islands included), Chile, and Italy…I know that doesn't seem like a lot, but we've been to a bunch of different cities/towns/areas in each country. And in the U.S. I've been to (all over) Connecticut, Massachusetts (mostly Boston, which i LOVE), Vermont, California (San Francisco mostly, more than once), New Mexico (Taos and Santa Fe), Arizona (Tucson and Sedona (beautiful, by the way, and we saw the Grand Canyon, too)), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, which we used to go to every year for my mother's birthday), and New York (NYC, Brooklyn, Adirondacks (for several weeks every summer), upstate NY). We might be going to Argentina or Spain this spring, too.

Wow. I feel like I just laid out my life story lol.

Yeah, Europe is pretty amazing. Also: I've landed (in between flights) in France, Amsterdam, and Texas (I know taht doesn't really count, but…still.  8))

Wow. For 12 year old, you're pretty well-traveled....I'm jealous. A bit.  Although, I think I'm safe in saying I've been to more places in the US, but...you totally beat me on the "outside the US" part. I've only been out of the country once and that was to Canada....And only Victoria and Vancouver Island, and since they're pretty much right on the border, I'm not sure if it really counts... ::)

And as for Europe...I've always wanted to go there. Particularly England...which is why I am supremely ecstatic that in 2 months I will be in Europe. It's something I thought I wouldn't get to do for at least 10 years, so....yeah. I'm quite happy.

Oh, I know. I was pretty much bouncing off the walls when I got my passport about a month ago, and as it gets closer to when I'm leaving.....I don't know. It gets even better. It's still kind of surreal though. I mean, I know that I'm going, but I don't think it's really sunk in that I'm actually going to Europe...It's a little weird.

Me, too! I'm like, In six hours I will be in a completely different country, and then the other side of me looks around my house and says, I'll believe it when I see it. Kinda weird, but…I think it makes the thrill of landing in a new place more…wow-ing.  8)

So little wil…I've never been to Canada, but…is it true that 'Canadian Bacon' is just fancy ham??  ;D

Yeah, I live in Connecticut now. I don't love it so much…if I still live in the U.S. when I'm an adult, I'd love to live in Boston, New York, or San Francisco.

I'd prefer to live in a small town in Western Washington.  After living in Montreal, I can decisively say I'd prefer not to live in a big city.  Especially not San Fransisco (though I love visiting the city).

I've never actually been to any continent other than North America, but I've visited 4 countries.

Well, my grandfather and great grandmother were, but when they ran to here they gave up Judaism, considering they ran from Nazi Germany.

So many of us THINK they were because of many of the stories and the fact that they were in a camp and how diligently they would deny the fact.  I myself however am not Jewish.

Yay! Congrats Shaggy! :D

I just felt like commenting here.

By the way, I  know the question was for Wilson, but yes, Canadian Bacon is just fancy ham...it's got nothing on real bacon.

And speaking of trips, I'm about to go to Ukraine in a week! Exciting, as I've only ever been to the US on a trip before.

I just felt like I was missing out on all the fun and had to comment here.

ps. Can I come to your pool party?

I generally find that I can tell the difference between an artificial tan and a natural tan; I'm generally much less attracted to the artificial kind than I am to even pale skin (though natural tans are nice).  It is possible that those who tan much lighter artificially might pass under my radar, though.

Tee-hee, I know all the (programming) languages you know! :P
(and I'm including html in that list despite not being a programming language. as an aside, you should totally learn PHP, great for the web stuffs! I learned it just from trial and error, relatively simple!)

Obviously I don't know all the languages you know, because japanese is all just crazy moon-speak to me. (Note that any language but english (and some dialects of english) all fall under the term "Crazy moon-speak" to me)

Also, that image went on a whole lot longer than i thought it would. I thought it would be like 4 or 5 panels or something, but then it just kept going :P

Ha ha.  Well the languages I know are (programming wise) even though some AREN'T really programming languages, but whatevs.

proficient : C++, HTML, CSS, XML (and some of it's sub-languages), VB, VBscript, ASP, ASP.NET

Know some : PHP, Java, Javascript, J#, C, C#, SQL, Python, Assembler.

ha ha.  I am taking a PHP class, an SQL class, and a Javascript class this summer.

lesee, in my court i have:

C++, VB, Java, FoxPro, HTML, PHP, SQL (almost a requirement with ANY programming language it seems),  VB Scripting, XML, QBasic (obviously i dont use this one much...)

Know some: C#, VB.net, LOLCode (personal interest on this one, obviously)

I know im probably forgetting some (i.e. ones i havent even thought and/or worried about in forever) but that pretty much covers what i would worry with on a resume (except maybe qbasic and lolcode....)

I have to say that Java is my favorite, i love the feel of a language that was very obviously designed from the bottom up as object-oriented :P

Edit: oh, forgot that work made me learn visual CE. I use it on occasion, though I wouldnt exactly call it a programming language (or even a scripting language..) it's more of a LOL-PROGR4MIN!! language to me....

If it really does get too annoying (e.g. I receive a sack of bandini fertilizer from spriggan and my stuffed animals are hacked apart by fell's steak knives) I'll just drop it from my sig line.  I wasn't trying to steal as much as imitate and in flattery.

Not being a techno fan, a macbook user, or a fan of Panic at the Disco (I'm old enough to prefer radiohead and clash) I just dropped those banners and added some originals that did fit.  It think it was on miyabi's read through that the really jarring collisions were happening. :P

Stereotypes aren't always bad.  This one is like Kaz says, just an observation.

well, all stereotyping comes from somewhere, some of it being observational trends in habits, mannerism, jobs, likes, dislikes, etc.

In all honesty, this stereotype is of a less-than-anger inducing variety as far as i'm aware. Afterall, you see it shown/paraodied/etc. on TV, movies, and just generally in our culture, so it's not like i really considered the comment offensive, but the origin of it is still the same :)

heh, I have a friend (who is white) who always challenges anyone who mentions this to show him an african-american person who likes fried chicken (or just plain chicken) more than he does. He could eat 3 meals a day of nothing but chicken. In fact, he almost does. He works at a local buffalo wild wings, and he always eats chicken for lunch when he's there, snacks on left over/extra chicken while at work, and usually gets some to bring home at night to eat. If he only ate chicken for breakfast, he would almost have chicken of some sort at every meal/snack :P

meat
–noun
1.   the flesh of animals as used for food.

The animalia kingdom contains the chordata phylum which is where most-to-all fish reside in, meaning that fish would be considered an "Animal".

Fish isn't a *RED* meat, for sure, but that's not the point, it's still a meat.

Well, that was my point, it's a common misconception that i dont understand how you could rationalize fish not being meat. I mean, there are "vegetarians" who eat fish, and still claim to be so, despite the fact that fish is meat.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

It's a western thing.  In proper English meat doesn't mean the flesh of animals, flesh does.  But in this degenerative, post modern world where words are going out of style, "Cause me teacher learn me good!" flesh has been given an odd connotation.  Flesh is properly sub-divided into fish (the flesh of fish, shellfish and crustaceans), poultry (the flesh of birds), pork (the meat of pigs) and meat the grab bag of everything else.  But if it's not red meat from a ruminant you have to hyphenate as in snake-meat.  :)

hrm, according to the etymology of the word on wikipedia, the use of the word meat that excludes fish appears to be a newer use of the word (it states that this use of the word developed over the past couple hundred years from religious influence)

Study's show that wikipedia has about the same amount of error as encyclopedia britannica, so you can't knock it as a reputable source anymore than any dictionary you were to pull open.

or information week? (http://www.informationweek.com/news/global-cio/trends/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=204702694)

I'm sure I could find numerous other sources, however, I have yet to see you cite any source as to your reasons to refuting (which is the standard form of a debate. You must supply evidence to back up your statements). The only place I can find refuting wikipedia's accuracy is from encyclopedia britannica, but i'm sure they may have some bias in there to try to refute this evidence.

I'd go for the study conducted at California State. Cnet's typically so full of crap that I wonder how they're even still around. I've never read Information Week, but it looks like a news outlet, which also discounts its accuracy in my view.

Not that I've actually paid enough attention to know what you're arguing about, but I thought I'd throw that out there. You know, because I need to waste time and there's nothing else on.

What's gets me is the way SF&F and comics are skewed against human beings.  Okay assume you can go to an alternate reality or another planet.  How come the aliens are always more competent and powerful.  You can't claim it's because there would be no conflict, Superman et al. Always have plenty of conflict to face.  But if every alien species, alternate reality, and magical event leaves ordinary people as the weaklings, then what are saying?  We're saying that in all the worlds, galaxies and universes we can conceive people are the most pathetic weaklings possible.  Not very healthy.  I want to see a fat bald network administrator who becomes the superhero without gaining any new abilities or special costumes. :P

Fly?  Why an alternate reality that would be cool would be one where your ordinary walking is superspeed and a human is a super genius....
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

It's totally true.  Someone should write a sci-fi that takes place from an alien that falls into a world of super beings and only near the end to find out that they are humans and the perception of the alien is just different. xD

Also, I got a puppy for Easter.  Well my sister and I did.  Now to just convince her we should name it Vin . . . she doesn't know about it yet though. ha ha.

I will never shave again!

So, after seeing numerous women purchasing Nair, I decided I'd give it a try.  It is AMAZING!  It makes everything so smooth, and is much less arduous and a lot faster than shaving with a razor. ha ha.  (Well I assume that this wouldn't be the case if you just shave your face and not your legs and arms and under-arms, etc.

EDIT:  I have also reached level 30

Tell me more about the actual Nair facial application process. Messy? Stings?

In the Vorkosigan books they have a depilatory cream that you just rub on like shaving cream and the hair comes off.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on April 20, 2009, 05:13:18 PM
Basically it's like, you spread it on (don't rub it in) then you wait 3-10 minutes.  Then your rub it off with a wet washcloth and it's super smooth.  Then you don't have to shave for like 3 days, because it just doesn't grow back as fast as when you shave with a razor.

Here's that video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MqOoE-ICrc) watch from 1:45 - 2:05 to see the part I was talking about.  The entire video is hilarious though.  Also his Purple Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAkEjhufIkY&feature=channel) challenge was pretty funny too.

It takes less time and gets deeper, so you don't have to shave as often.

Post by: Renoard on April 21, 2009, 07:38:38 AM
It affects the growth rate, but not by interacting with the biochemistry.  When you shave you affect the growth rate too.  Blades shock the skin and make the hair grow fast.  Chemical depilatories are really just really harsh soap.  Might as well call soap a drug.  After all it strips dead skin off with an alkaline solution. . . :P

Yup, I'm in missouri, and we don't even worry about the SAT test. Anyone who plans on going to college takes the ACT, though.

I got a 32 on my ACT exam :D

They test totally different things, however:

The SAT tests logic, vocabulary, and (now) writing (didn't used to).

The ACT tests reading skills, scientific knowledge, and mathematical knowledge.

Yeah, there's a ton of questions. I dunno how the grading goes, but they get it down to a score of like 1-36 (though I heard you get like 10 or so points just or putting your name on it)

The current swine flu, isn't really pig flu (which nearly all humans are immune to).  It's a Type A flu that happens to have a lot of genetic similarity to swine flu.  Probably a tailored virus that got loose (glares meaningfully at Amgen).

A day date is a tradition that some areas have in which a group of friends who are all going to the prom get their dates and hang out on the day of the prom before separating to get ready for the dance itself. I think it's mostly limited to Utah, though I've heard of it happening in California, Idaho, and Nevada as well. It's strange and hard to explain.

There's also a new president every four (or sometimes eight) years. Are you saying becoming president isn't an achievement?
There's (at most) one new president of the USA every four years, but there are many thousands of valedictorians in the USA per year. The HS I went to had classes of about 500 (not excluding those who dropped out at some point), and over 1% of those students were valedictorians. I knew all seven of my valedictorians. Three of them had ACTs 24 or below, two bridged the gap to 30, and the other two had scores of 33 and 34. Only one even took the SAT (the 34 genius boy). Needless to say, this was a public school. The number of people who could have been valedictorians at your school is probably much lower (than even the national average). I think. You're going to a somewhat prestigious private school, right?

My school district should not be one to judge by, though. Teachers can get fired for giving an "A student" an A- if the kid's parents whine enough. I don't expect most public schools to be quite that bad.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on May 30, 2009, 11:08:03 PM
Also, valedictorians know like a year ahead of time whether they're going to have the credits to make it, and they tend to get straight As, so it's no surprise when it happens.

There's no 'somewhat' in any description of my school. And I'm not exaggerating.

Quote

Many people get As.

NB: GPAs are not computed at my school (at least publicly), so I'm pretty sure the way of determining each class's valedictorian is a bit different than normal schools.

This has been taken way, way too far, and way too seriously. My original post simply statement that my good friend's brother had become valedictorian, he is an extremely bright person, and I thought it was cool. That's it. I wasn't even saying what an accomplishment that is; I only mentioned that when everyone blew up at a simple comment. So chill.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on May 31, 2009, 12:32:29 AM
How do they determine who the valedictorian is? Also, what is the size of the graduating class? If it's a prestigious private school, I assume the graduating class size is relatively small, so each student has a higher chance of being the valedictorian than at a school with 500 in the graduating class.

That's one way of looking at it. The other way is if you step back to look at the larger picture, you get two numbers: the number of kids going to a public school with 500 kids in the graduating class, and the number of kids that apply to the small, prestigious private school that attend. Since the choice of valedictorian is made mostly (or only) on academic success, it is fair to say that if a student was of valedictorian quality, they would make it into the school. And so, to become valedictorian, you not only have to succeed further than your fellow classmates, but also those that applied to your school.

I realize that this line of reasoning is a slight generalization, but I think it is fairly reliable.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Inquisitor on May 31, 2009, 09:41:16 PM
It all depends on the school. For instance, at my school, I'm ranked around the middle. However, if I went to a certain other school in my district, I would most likely be top 10%.

I'm surprised that this forum hasn't seen a pie VS cake thread/poll. It's one of the ways you can tell that a forum has reached relative maturity. Or is it?

You should start one.

But I think that would get too complicated because people might like only certain types of cake better than other types of pie, and vice versa. Ya know.

Pie will win. No amount of moisture rich, spongy confection can penetrate it's crisp, flaky exterior.

Does Creme Brulee' / Flan count as pie or cake?

Next to those I like half chocolate half blond brownies with rasberry and chocolate sauces.  Then third in line is Chocolate fudge cake made in the Torte style not the Kuchen style with butter cream icing.  Not sure if that alines me with the Pie Faces or the Cake Walkers. ;P

Moving this to the official thread.

At the Warbreaker signing I handed Brandon my Japanese copies of Elantris.  He looked down, and after I showed him which page had his name on it (it was written in Japanese) he began signing his name and said, "This is the first Japanese copy I have signed."  In my head I said, No he's not.  He then continued to start drawing the '#' sign and I though, OMG he is!  I have both volumes of the Japanese Elantris NUMBER ONE!

True story.

Last weekend I went to watch my brother, sister, and sister-in-law do an Xterra, and Ned Overend was there! Holy crap! I almost peed my pants. And my brother beat his time, which was awesome beyond reckoning. I didn't get to meet him because I was on the bike trail taking pictures when he crossed the finish line. :-\

Also, my sis-in-law asked me to design their new house, which is awesome because I'm still a student. I'll definitely have to study hard if I want it to be as good as she expects it to be. *nervous face*

I found out today that the letter to the editor I faxed in this morning is going to be published.  I was replying to another letter that had been written in today's newspaper.

THE STORY BEHIND IT:  Recently two women who have been living together for a long time, and are lesbian went to an Olympic swimming complex.  They were denied the family rate for them and their children because they weren't a "family".  Soon after there was an article put in the newspaper about this situation.  Approximately a week later they held a protest outside of the swimming pool and told anyone who would listen about what had happened to them.  In today's newspaper there was a letter to the editor and it read:

Quote from: Niki Taysom
Homosexuals

Homosexual relationships are not recognized by the state of Idaho, are against natural law, which are the laws o9f God.

"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with woman, both of them have commited an abomination..." Leviticus 20:13.  This also applies to women.

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?  Be not deceived: Neither fornication, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind." 1 Corinthians 6:9.

Babylon, Rome and Greece were destroyed because of immorality among its peoples.

When people choose to go against natural laws (the laws of God), there are negative consequences.

There is a God, and He wants us all back.  It is time to stand up for what is right for the preservation of us all - expecially children, who cannot speak for themselves.

After reading this I was shocked and saddened that someone would say that.  I decided that I would write a letter as well to respond to it.  This is what I wrote:

Quote from: Chris King

Too often today people push that their religion is what should govern everyone around them.  Such is the case against homosexuality.  Many of the people who write letters or make grand-standing arguments against it say things such as "Tthe bible says it's wrong".  These same people would tell you that homosexuality is a choice.

The fact is, more and more scientific evidence is showing that homosexuality is not a choice, but formed on a biological level.  Simon LeVay (PhD University of Gottingen, Pose Doctoral Harvard Medical School) spent the majority of his carrier studying homosexuality.

His studies showed that homosexual men have a larger amount of nuclei in the Anterior Hypothalamus than straight men do.  This is true inversely for women.  It's not simply a choice that is made at some point in a person's life, it is decided for them prebirth.

If God exists in the way some Christians who oppose homosexuality want him to exist, then he is playing a cruel trick on a lot of people (approximately 4.1% of adult per the study in 2006 by the Williams Institute School of Law).

Even if this was a choice, I don't know a single person that would have wanted all of the harassment and name calling that comes to someone as they go through school, or even after school that comes from the general population who oppose homosexuality.

I remember, not so long ago, I was out of topwn helping to train people who work for the same company as me.  On3e day after work I was walking through the building and walked passed some people who could tell thgat I was gay, they proceeded to latch onto each otyher and say things such as, "Oh, I love you, I'm sooo gay."  To their friends while shooting me dirty looks.

Growing up, I eventually came to accept myself and become happy.  The harassment I endeared caused me to become open to people of all kinds.  I can not imagine being prejudice towards any group of people upon "what" they are, because I've learned that the what doesn't define the who.  Because of this I feel that I have become a better person that I would have if I had not had to deal with such things growing up, and I believe more people should learn to find a who in someone before they place judgment on them.

Later, after discussing with my grandma and telling her they were putting my letter in the newspaper, she told me that the woman who originally started all of this (The woman who was denied the family discount) used to baby sit me when I was a child and she was proud of me for not being afraid to show who I was to the people of the community.

How am i supposed to believe it isn't a choice if they can't pin point the gene... sounds like another excuse for abhorent behavior...i have 2 cousins on different sides of the family who are both homosexual and i disagree with them but we just don't discuss it, i love them both dearly and it's not like they are rapist or some evil creature their moral are just differnet from mine. And lets say i give you the benefit of the doubt and say that homosexuality is born on a genetic level, that doesn't change the fact that it is abhornet behavior so there is a choice involved you can defy urges just like a person who is inclined to be promiscuise stays faithful to his wife (and there is a chemical inbalance that causes this), or how i refrain from slapping someone who insulted my momma, ect. And because there is a different mind set between the sexes physically and emotionally i believe it to be an absolute necessity for a child to be raised by a mother and a father both the appropriate sexes, otherwise the child grows up on a poor foundation because they have deprived to witness the balance of both worlds.

" The harassment I endeared caused me to become open to people of all kinds."

Hope the editor catches this and changes "endeared" to "endured" before it gets published...

I'll chime in and point out, however, that most psychologists claim that homosexuality is psychological.  Most geneticists claim that it is genetic.

The overall consensus, particularly in cross-disciplinary fields, is that homosexuality is a psychological state which is influenced by genetic factors, somewhat akin to the genetic propensity some individuals have towards addiction, or alcoholism, or obesity.  In all of these cases, some degree of control can be exercised, but it is much more difficult for some individuals than others.

Drawing an artificial distinction between gay people and straight people oversimplifies what is, in reality, a highly complicated issue—a moderately large minority of people feel some sort of homosexual urge at some point in their lives, and a number of individuals are attracted to both sexes (bisexuals).  Moreover, there are individuals which switch sexual preferences at various points in their lives.  I have known individuals who have crossed back and forth between heterosexuality and bisexuality, and between homosexuality and bisexuality.  I have also known homosexuals who then became heterosexual (and obvious the reverse).

Because of this, I find it unhelpful to talk about sexual preference in terms of "you're born black, or you're born white, and that determines who you are for the rest of your life".  Sexual preference doesn't work that way.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: mtlhddoc2 on July 01, 2009, 05:00:51 AM
many studies have shown that a MAJORITY, not a "large minority" of people have at least some homosexual tendencies or feelings. I cant say whether it is genetic or not, but what I can say is that it is not right to judge others for who or what they are, be it a choice or not. Unless their behavoir in some way harms you, leave well enough alone.

There have also been studies pointing to homosexuality as a deviant choice, but in some cases, the people who came to this conclusion also did studies on atheism too, and found the atheists in their study to be mentally deficient.

bottom line, a study will almost always produce the results that the researcher wants or expects, even if it is subconscious. The researchers bias will always skew the results because they will skew the criteria for the study, whether it is a study on eggs causing cancer, the "cause" of homosexuality, or whether there was once life on Mars. We see it all the time, the big difference is that organized religion does not publish the studies on eggs and use them as proof that eggs are an abomination.

So, to sum up:  You wholesale reject all science, because you believe it's all bogus anyhow.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: mtlhddoc2 on July 01, 2009, 11:26:59 AM
no, I dont reject it, I require more than a few studies to reach the same results with varied criteria. Smoking is bad for you, greasy foods make you fat, and the earth revolves around the sun.

You can look at the whole "global warming" or "climate change" science and see how flawed science often makes it's way into mainstream  thought. The climate models used to determine the results are so flawed that they can ONLY come up with one result. Many scientists have debunked the model, many scientists have spoken out against the findings, yet the governments of the world have grabbed the ball and are running with it anyway, even though they have essentially been told to go the wrong way. And it is going to cost us trillions of dollars for nothing.

...it is going to cost us trillions of dollars for nothing.
Well, I don't know about that. Being more efficient with our use of energy and materials will make the future easier on our decedents at some point in the future, whether it be in fifty years or five thousand. Now, if these scientists were proposing a massive terraforming project, that would be stupid. As it is, I see no reason to antagonize people who are trying to advance technology, even if they may (or may not) be motivated for the wrong reasons. Besides, all of this doesn't affect you unless you... well, buy almost any energy efficient appliance, computer, vehicle, home, factory, or... power plant? *shifty eyes*
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: mtlhddoc2 on July 02, 2009, 03:17:58 AM
I am talking about, mostly, the ridiculous carbon credits and carbon capture technology which will cost several trillion dollars per year, all paid by, guess who? You and me. And it will mean exactly jack-squat.

More efficient use of energy is nessecary from an economic standpoint as well, so doing that will benefit us all. And both sides agree on better efficiency and reduction of imported oil fuels. The phase out of coal plants is nessecary because of the devastation it has wrought on the landscape and the pollution in cities, although the new "clean coal" plants are quite spectacularly pollution free, except for carbon dioxide, which is not a pollutant, but a naturally occurring substance.

My biggest complaint about the energy issues is that both sides seem to be going about it the wrong way. They completely ignore the cleanest source of energy and lowest environmental impact source: nuclear. solar and wind both need huge swaths of land to even make a minor impact, while nuclear plants can provide all the energy the entire country needs on a total land area the size of Rhode Island. Whereas wind and solar would require the land area of CANADA to produce the same amount.

Yeah, the public fear of nuclear power is ludicrous. It's a NIMBY issue.

I don't understand why nuclear power should be a NIMBY issue. Is it from Chernobyl and other failed Russian nuclear projects or do people think that a nuclear reactor functions like a nuclear warhead?

Didn't we have a melt down in florida or somewhere with one of our plants... the chance of one is low but the fact that there is a chance is what inspires fear and i can't blame anyone for being afraid...the question then becomes does the benefit out way the risk

Kaz: that is a grand misconception. We had a "scare" at 3 Mile Island, but it never actually had an accident, all the failsafes acted properly and nothing happened. The facility was not even evacuated! So far, Chernobyl is the only nuclear accident the world has ever had. France powers it's entire country with nuclear power, and Russia uses it for quite a bit as well. Here in the US, we currently have around 30 nuclear plants still operating, and about 100 that got too old and were decommissioned instead of being upgraded (because of the silly "nuclear fear"). I lived near a plant in NJ and never felt in any danger. There is no waste  or pollution other than the spent fuel, which is stored on site. Each plant produces about a half a barrel of spent rods per year.

There's actually company called Hyperion, that's going to start selling mini nuclear reactors that can fuel 20,000 homes, and after about 5 years produces waste the size of a softball. It has no moving parts (which means it can't explode), and is to be encased in concrete and buried.

Did you guys read the update at the bottom of that link?

Quote
Update (November 12, 2008): The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) contacted PhysOrg.com to state that the NRC has no plans to review the Hyperion design in the near future, although the NRC and Hyperion have had preliminary talks. Because the Hyperion design is unique, the NRC expects that it will take significant time to ensure safety requirements. In a response to a letter from October 2008, the NRC stated:

“Hyperion Power Generation is in the early stages of development of this design, and very little testing information is available for this design concept. Hyperion Power Generation has indicated that it will submit technical reports to support a pre-application review in late FY 2009. The NRC cannot engage in any meaningful, formal technical interaction with the potential applicant until we receive those reports. Because of the very limited amount of test data and lack of operating experience available for a uranium hydride reactor, the NRC staff anticipates that a licensing review would involve significant technical, safety, and licensing policy issues.”

In other words, it's yet another promising prototype that will never see the light of day.

Speaking of small nuclear reactors that are unlikely to see the light of day, have you guys heard of the Adams Engine (http://www.atomicengines.com/index.html)? Would you drive a nuclear-powered car?

the radiation from about a dime's worth of plutonium, would be about the same as the radiation from a cellphone. You wouldnt need very much shielding, if any. There would not be enough fissle material for a "meltdown".

Keep in mind, 90% of our naval fleet is powered by nuclear reactors. If the military stepped it up in R&D, this could certainly be a reality in just a few years.

Umm... You're wrong about the radiation from a dime's worth of plutonium. First off, a cell phone uses microwave radiation. That's not the same thing at all as the ionizing radiation of nuclear decay.

As for the amount, a dime is about 0.25 cubic centimeters. That would be 4.95 grams of P-239. Let's say 5 grams. 5 grams of P-239 would be 0.31 Curies of radiation.  To kill someone within one week requires a dose of only 2.6 Curies. A dose of 0.31 Curies will kill you within 9 weeks. (Of course, that's if you swallow the dime of plutonium. If you just sit near it it will take you longer to die but you will still die.)

I worked with low shielded Americanium for a time. We all wore rad badges. I was accidentally exposed once, the rad badge barely blipped. Now, mind you, it wasnt plutonium, but prolonged exposure would have been bad. It has been over 15 years and I show no outward signs. I didnt say it wouldnt have to be shielded, but it wouldnt require 50 pounds of lead. Really, you wouldnt need much at all, maybe a gallon or two of water should be sufficient for such a small piece, and a dimes worth is probably more than needed. I was just using it as an example.

There is a reactor here in Rhode Island at the University of RI's Maritime campus in Narragansett. It has been running for over 30 years. It powers the entire URI campus. On one 10lb bar. they change the bar out and reprocess it on site. In 30 years, they have used 3 bars. And that is probably because it is a 30 year old reactor and is more of a "training" model, than an updated high tech facility. If they went with the latest and greatest, I bet they could make that one bar last 30 years and power much more than just the Kingston/Narragasett campuses.

There are materials you can mine that are hard to find and dangerous to touch. If you use a type of magic called "science" on samples of these materials, you will get immense power over a time. The power and time are determined by the type and size of the sample and quality of the science used. However, lead must be used to contain the dangerous materials at all times, or anyone who gets close to them will die.

Some magical metal boats that are heavier than water but still float use this material for power. Some people want to harness this power to propel their chariots, and the discussion just previous was about how much of one of these materials would be needed to do that and if that quantity would be dangerous in the event of a crash.

You did say "if any" so that confused me. I think the problem with the shielding is not what will protect the passengers under normal operating conditions (won't take much protection for a piece that size, as you say), but what happens in an accident. Making the shielding accident-proof will add to the bulk. I think it can be done but it's a design and engineering challenge.

What was your company doing with the americium? Sounds like an interesting job.

I dont think there would be much protection needed in an accident either, again, if any. Normal construction would provide most if not all of the shielding needed. This wouldnt be a piece up plutonium just sitting on the hood of a car. It would need water for cooling anyway, since the real threat is not the radiation, but the temperatures it might have to achieve. A "quick cooling" system would need to be in place....  as you say, an engineering challenge, but one quite surmountable, if the proper resources were invested.

I worked for a foundry, we used the americanium for testing metals, specifically to make sure it was the proper alloy. And the reality was, we were exposed to more radiation from the heat and melted metals than from the americanium isotopes. Although I was not as exposed as some of the employees. I was in quality assurance (a tester, basically) and was typically not working directly with the smelters. Although, occassionally, I would have to take an in production sample. (think: wearing a space suit to go into a furnace)

Probably the only thing more dangerous than a fission pile furnace, is a fusion furnace.  But goodness if they aren't trying to force a tokamac to sustain fusion.  There is a reason the orbit of the earth is as far as it is and that we have an insanely powerful magnetic field as well as shortwave filtration (ozone).  Radiation tweaks chromosomes and you die, painfully.

A common citation for how safe reactors are, is that workers are exposed to levels as low as those produced by the potassium/argon decay in granitic structures like old castles.  Castles that produced numerous sublethal recessive mutations as well as extremely low birthrates among European nobility and royalty.  Even the relatively "safe" amounts of radiation exposure are not good.  More to the point, nuclear power is unnecessary.  Hydrogen burned at a controlled temperature with a catalyst produces clean emissions and a is 100% renewable from seawater.

Renoard: how close are they to producing a hydrogen reactor?
I can answer for you: not very.

Whereas we have fission reactors now which are safe, incredibly efficient and effective and produce little to no pollutants. We currently have hundreds of naval ships operating with nuclear reactors and since they have gone online 30 some years ago, there has not been 1 instance of radiation poisoning.

And from what I have read up on concerning the hydrogen burning reactor studies...  a mishap with a hydrogen plant, as the technology stands now, would cause the same level of destruction as the sun going supernova. (again "as it stands now"). I cannot put my faith in unproven technologies when we have perfect capable and clean tech now to produce all the energy we need for a small fraction of the cost of the daily importing of oil and the release of tons of harmful gasses into our amosphere daily.

Ok, two problems:
1. Our sun isn't big enough to go supernova.
2. The earth can't produce a destructive force anywhere near that of a supernova. Full stop.

We may be able to destroy our planet, but to affect even Venus would be difficult at best. Anyway, please link to said studies. (The fact that you said studies instead of research makes me think that it could be inaccurate as well. Studies are often proven wrong. Much more often than experiments. Plus, the word 'studies' is attached to telephone surveys and college polls, giving it a sour taste in my mouth when talking about science. NYT: "99 percent of people think that hydrogen reactors could kill us all!":P)

It was a while ago, and I read alot. but I also qualified with "as it stands now" which means that just how it could be at the moment. For all I know, ten minutes ago, some guy came up with a perfectly safe way to do it. But regardless, fission is a "shovel ready project" unlike stimulus bill projects and unlike hydrogen.

And actually, our sun is TOO BIG to go supernova at the moment, but it could certainly go nova. A supernova happens after a star becomes incredibly dense. It is a rare event, but cataclysmic. And from what i understand, it is entire possible for that to happen to a planet. If all the molecules in a planet happened to attract to each other with emmense force, the planet will shrink and become incredibly dense, which in turn could cause it to "supernova" which, in turn is a cataclysmic event and could certainly cause the planets Venus and Mars to be destroyed. Hydrogen "burning" is in effect, mini-fusion reactions. And I suppose could potentially cause a chain reaction within the atmopsphere, densifying the planet.

Also
I said burning hydrogen not reacting hydrogen.  A hydrogen reactor would have to be either fusion, or fission probably using deuterium.  Clean burning of hydrogen with a catalyst at appx 750 deg. (temperature of the fire) produces steam pressure as exhaust and no measurable NOx or carbon compounds.  All the tech for it is currently available most of it off the rack.

Your definition of no pollutants is one that not even GE would agree with.  Plutonium is a pollutant.  Any depleted Uranium Isotope is a pollutant by definition because it is a soluble heavy metal.  With some of them there is the risk of radiation poisoning as well and no matter how you look at it it's bad news.

The definition of radiation poisoning that you are applying is what I was calling into question.  As I said, defective recessive genes and hereditary illnesses they can cause are sicknesses even if you can only link them to the radiation exposure via statistics.  All it takes is a bit of stray gama or a little lost proton even without hot particulates.

Renoard: you can get similar results from tap water, cell phones, microwave ovens, convection ovens or several dozen other sources which we react with in our every day life. Uranium/plutonium, because of teh safety protocols which are enacted when they enter the fray, is safer than a microwave and produces less magnetic pollution than a cell phone and less heat pollution than an ordinary convection oven. The amount of "pollutants"
pol·lut·ant  (pə-lōōt'nt)
n.  Something that pollutes, especially a waste material that contaminates air, soil, or water.

is neglidgible since the waste rod are normally stored inside the reactor. And even when removed, are stored in highly secure locations. the average family produces more "pollutants" in a week than all the reactors in the country produce in a year, since they never expel the waste material.
http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/brochures/br0216/#how_much_hlw

the total waste from all the reactors in the country since the first one went online about 35 years ago is less than the average town uses in a week.

Hydrogen burning? No hydro burning tech has been approved for use as of yet. Current hydrogen models split the h2 off of water and then recombine it with oxygen, essentially, fission, and then fusion:

Title: Re: I would like to announce!

mtlhddoc2 you're using much looser terminology than most of us are used to. Electrolysis does not involve fission (the splitting of atomic nuclei) and burning (recombining hydrogen with oxygen) does not involve fusion (the joining of atomic nuclei into larger nuclei). Anytime you set something on fire you combine it with oxygen. That's the definition of burning.

I do think the "hydrogen economy" is a dead end though. Unless they can find a good way to produce it that uses less energy than it puts out, or nearly equivalent energy, it's a waste.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: mtlhddoc2 on July 09, 2009, 04:42:28 AM
maybe i am being too basic, but you are right, hydrogen, as it stands now, is a dead end. That could change, tomorrow, or 20 years from now, or never. But we do need to press forward with all available "clean" energy sources, when efficient. nuclear fission is the most efficient of them at this time, even if it is not as "clean" as wind or solar (although both wind and solar do have climate effects, and habitat effects, which should not be discounted.)

Fire does combine oxygen with otehr molecules, but it also breaks down the molecules of the source material. In essense, if you forgive the basics again, fission and fusion at the same time. Fire also has radiant qualities as well, due to teh fact that in many cases, some of each molecule can be lost and its nucleus can change based on the heat of the reaction. This is why a cigarette will set off a geiger counter.

EPA says tobacco contains radioactive elements lead-210 and polonium-210.

http://www.epa.gov/rpdweb00/sources/tobacco.html

That is why cigarettes set off a geiger counter.

Radiant isn't the same thing as radioactive...normal fire is not radioactive unless something that's being burned is radioactive. Fire does not cause fission. Spontaneous fission (including theoretical heat-induced fission) does not occur in nonradioactive elements. Yes, there are extremely trace amounts of radioactive elements all around us, but that doesn't have anything to do with fire.

Splitting molecules is not fission. Joining molecules is not fusion. Not when we're talking about nuclear anything.

Wow, this got long. TL;DR summary: Our sun isn't massive enough to go supernova, it's silly to think anything could make the earth "go nova", and hydrogen is not terribly useful as a power source unless we can figure out how to control and sustain fusion.

OK, here goes. Memories from my Astronomy class, all too long ago:

Our sun is not large enough to go supernova, where by "large" I mean "massive". The physical size of a star is a matter of fluid equilibrium, and is largely irrelevant to its eventual ability to go supernova. As a star ages and consumes its hydrogen, it will begin to fuse heavier and heavier elements. Stars of our size get up to around carbon before dying. More massive stars get up into the metals: iron and beyond.

An aging star will eventually exhaust all available fuel (where by "exhaust" I mean "convert into elements so heavy that they won't fuse at the energies produced by a star of a given mass"). When this happens, the star will collapse. If the star was sufficiently massive in life, its core will compress down to a neutron star, which the outer gaseous layers rebound off of. Fueled by this rebound (and super-heated by their rapid collapse), these layers explode violently outward. That's a supernova.

A yellow star like our sun will never go nova. Rather than collapsing inward and then violently exploding, our star will expand and cool until it's roughly the size of the orbit of Mars. The expanding star will eventually reach a point where the outward force of radiation and other pressures is greater than the force of gravity. When this happens, the star will gently (well, gently compared to a supernova) give off its outer layers into an ever-expanding cloud, leaving behind a white-hot carbon core that cannot sustain fusion of any sort; this is a white dwarf. White dwarfs are doomed either to slowly cool or accrete enough matter from other sources to go nova themselves.

The idea that anything at all could make the Earth "go nova" is ludicrous. Sorry, but there's no other way to say it. It just doesn't make any sense. The largest thermonuclear explosion ever created on the surface of the Earth (the 50 megaton Russian Tsar Bomba) did some crazy stuff like blow out windows hundreds of miles away (atmospheric focusing of pressure waves), and it registered on seismic instruments around the world. But destroy the entire world? Not a chance.

Lastly, the idea that we should burn hydrogen in power plants is misguided at best. You can't mine hydrogen, nor can you find a way to produce it that uses less energy than you put in (that would be a violation of the laws of thermodynamics). The only potential use for hydrogen in a power plant context is fusion, which is, by all reports, 30-50 years away if it ever happens at all.

Somewhat ironically, the best way to produce hydrogen for transportation fuel (also not the best idea, for efficiency, energy density, and infrastructure reasons) is lots of nuclear power.

Actually,
Rendering free hydrogen using photovoltaic cells linked to is a feasible technology.  The energy need for producing H would be spread out over time and surface area of the solar batteries.  Burning hydrogen for energy becomes a means of concentrating relatively weak solar energy into intense bursts that are actually usable.  This is essentially the same role fossil fuels serve, but cuts the volatile biochemicals out of the loop.

We need to breed a class of humans for the purpose of generating power. We'll dedicate more resources to farming and have bicycle power plants. Problem solved. Case is closed. Now get to it. The first part, obviously.

Umm.  I think the southern states tried a program like that in the 18'th and 19'th centuries. . .

Electric transmission and motors are an inherently inefficient form of motive force.  Far too much of the generated or stored energy is lost as em and infrared.

Hybrids achieve the illusion of statistical efficiency by shutting off the gasoline motor during starts and stops, substituting inefficient electrical power but saving wasted fuel that would have been lost during idle cycles.  If you could start a gasoline engine and take off from a dead stop with just the press of an accelerator pedal and switch it off when ever you are coasting or at a complete stop.

Using solar and hydroelectric to generate the Hydrogen fuel, essentially moves the gas production into the same role as the electric motor and is more efficient net net.

Wow. What are you reading? Because, honestly, everything I'm reading says that this is entirely, 100% backwards. AC induction motors can get very efficient - above 95%. Brushless DC motors (cheaper and easier to design a drivetrain around) are around 80% efficient. The very best gasoline engines are around 30% efficient, with the best diesel engines hitting 40%. The cars most of us drive are lucky to hit 20% efficiency.

Hybrids are efficient because they enable the recovery of energy that is otherwise lost as heat in the brakes. They also provide low-rpm torque for acceleration, which is something ICE's are bad at, making the stop and go cycle more efficient. Most of them use the Atkinson cycle, which trades power for efficiency, and get away with it due to the electric assist.

In highway driving their advantages are less pronounced, but they still tend to do better because the gas engine doing the heavy lifting is smaller than it would be if unassisted by an electric motor.

Wow ryan, you must be using some pretty odd standards for efficiency that don't relate to real world.

But in real world terms:
In an electric car, when you burn calories of fuel to produce heat.  Heat is translated into mechanical energy via steam.  Mechanical energy is transformed into EM via the turbine transfers the mechanical force into friction which releases bursts of em as the magnetic field is broken in the generator.  That em has to be transformed into high voltage low through step up transformers.  It has to be transmitted along high tension wires with electrical resistance.  Then it must be stepped down to the voltage usable in the charging station to charge batteries.  Storage Batteries "leak" power and will deplete on their own if left unused.  Battery power is discharged through a power distribution circuit to the electric motor(s).  The electric motor(s) translate EM BACK into Mechanical Energy.

Every single change from one energy domain to the next loses energy to radiated EM and or infrared emissions.  With electric motors shedding unacceptable loads in heat (IR), loss of carbon from contact brushes and friction.

In a hybrid the second scenario is used to power the car part of the time and to charge the batteries without the transmission. losses.

In a gasoline engine calories are burned to produce mechanical energy directly, and some is captured as em by the alternator.  Even at 30% volumetric efficiency you would still be ahead in the gasoline engine.  But in real world terms the VE on a gasoline car is something like 60% due to constant tuning by the ignition computer, with finely tuned race cars reaching a VE of close to 90%.

The major weaknesses of Internal combustion engines is that starting and stopping the combustion cycle is wasteful because excess fuel is required in those processes.  Also the heat of combustion is substantial and is never recouped except to heat the cab of the vehicle on a cold day.

But Net Net, once you factor in the energy in producing components, transmission, lost potential during storage (ie while the car is parked) Electric Cars are a disaster waiting to happen.  External combustion engines, using CNG or Hydrogen, have a far greater potential for efficient energy usage and clean emissions.

Oh, you wanted well-to-wheels figures? You should have said so.

Of course, you described the well-to-wheels process for electricity, but completely ignored it for oil. Here's an overview that's brief and clear. (http://www.theoildrum.com/node/2320). Also, I've never seen anyone claim 60% efficiency for a gasoline car - ever - and who cares about race cars? Nobody actually drives them outside of a racetrack.

Quote

This is true. However, it's only one part of the hybrid system. It's not hard to see that a hybrid drivetrain - taken as a whole - is more efficient than a traditional gasoline drivetrain. One need look no further than the EPA sticker on the window.

As for well-to-wheels on an electric drivetrain, I couldn't find the paper I wanted, so I'd need to look around. But, for the sake of argument, let's imagine that they come out dead even (something I don't believe to be true, but again, we're positing for the sake of argument). In that case, switching to electric drive would still be a good idea because of the other side of the energy equation - the political side. If we all drove electric cars, we would be dependent on no one but ourselves for our energy.

It also helps the environmental side, because we are free to switch to cleaner methods of electric generation over time.

if we all switched to electric engines NOW. Our oil imports would increase from about 30% to nearly 50% immediately, causing us to further be indebted to the oil producing nations. We need to switch to nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal and tidal engery sources first, then we can all drive electric cars. Although, with the current electric engine model, we would have to stop and charge the car every forty miles. And a full charge takes about 8 hours. I wouldnt even be able to get to work and back. And can you imagine the strain on the grid this would produce? Many parts of the country have rolling brown outs and black outs as it is because the grid cannot supply enough power to everyone all at once. Now, lets all plug in our cars! Sounds ridiculous, doesnt it?

The only "electric" car i would currently drive are the recycle hybrids, not the plug in models. They Prius gets 50 mpg or better without ever using the electrical grid or any other power source but itself. And there is no reason not to continue to use this type of extra energy in cars, except for the fact hat it is inefficient, at best. But it STILL saves tons of gasoline. If everyone drove a Prius, we could reduce our imported oil from 30% to about 10%.

I think the Tesla Roadster has a 250 mile range (a wee bit more than 40 miles).  Additionally, night-time, when most cars would be charging, is the time that least power is used; enabling cars to be charging during this time would increase electrical efficiency in this nation.

I don't know what makes you think that. Again, everything I've read points to electric cars using a lot less energy, not more.

Also, your conception of an electric car is somewhat dated. The cars (http://teslamotors.com) coming (http://aptera.com) on the market (http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/04/we-drive-nissan/) both now and in the near future (http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com/special/ev/) get between 100 and 300 miles to a charge. They perform better, are generally easier to operate (most electric cars use a single speed transmission), are cheaper to drive, and, due to the simpler mechanical nature of an electric motor (one moving part!), require far less maintenance.

As Jade pointed out, EVs charging at night would be a very good thing. Most electricity generated at night is wasted. Also, a full charge only takes 8 hours if you run 120V household current (and if charging overnight, who cares?). Installing a 240V charger in your garage cuts that time in half.

As for whether or not people would actually mostly charge at night, I can't say for sure. There may be issues. Nobody can really predict what will happen. Fortunately, we will have many years to figure it out and work out the kinks.

100+ miles on an electric motor? No, not a one. the new Volvo Clean Diesel Hybrid PlugIn has a 40-45 miles range on the electric motor, and then the gas kicks in. the Chevy volt has a 50 mile max.

Yes, if they generated electricity at night it would be wasted. they only generate what the grid demands. If the grid demands more, they produce more. We would fry the grid almost immediately after giving everyone and electric car. Plus, electricty would cost more per mile for the end-user than gasoline at $2.50 a gallon, and would break even at about $4 per gallon. So it is not economically viable either. The "plu in" electric car, no matter what the government shoves down our throats, is a dated concept as long as we still rely on fossil fuels for electricity production. Now, stick solar panels on the roof of your house and then charge your car, free fuel, but not when drawing from the grid.

You're being a bit generous to the Volt. It has a 40 mile max range, which should still cover most people's commutes without needing the range extender to kick in.

Beyond that, did you look at any of the four links I posted? They are all pure EV's that are either in production right now (Tesla roadster) or  under development for 2010-2011 release (the rest), and every last one gets over 100 miles per charge. That's not speculative range, either; the engineering prototypes they've actually built pull those numbers. And that's only four examples. Honestly, any auto company with half a brain is now working on electric drivetrains.

Electric generation is an industrial process that's not as easy to just shut down as you seem to imagine. Most electricity generated at night is wasted because it costs more to shut the furnaces down every night than it does to just leave them running.

Also, you're ignoring the fact that we *can't* just give everyone an electric car right now. We'll have years upon years to scale up and work out the kinks. Which I've already said, in my last post. Did you even read it? If so, why do you disagree?

Have you actually done that math, or are you just making stuff up? Here, let's work it out. Assume a base price of $0.10 / kWh (a generous assumption; many pay less, especially at night). The Tesla Roadster's battery pack stores 53 kWh (http://www.teslamotors.com/display_data/TeslaRoadsterBatterySystem.pdf) of juice. At a charging efficiency of 80% (I made that number up; it's probably a slight under-estimate), it takes 66.25 kWh to charge. That's $6.63 at our base price, or about $0.04 / mile.

For comparison, my 1997 Chrysler Sebring gets about 17 mi/gallon around town. At $2.50 / gallon, I pay $0.15 / mile. For me to break even with even the Tesla Roadster (to which efficiency is not the primary concern), gas prices would have to drop to $0.68 / gallon.

you leave out alot of numbers in your posts and your math. My electric bill is sky high for very little due to all the extra charges involved. Even if I were to use NO electricity in a given month, it would still cost me $60.

I spend about $75 a month for  my 50 mile per day commute in my 1995 Volvo. Most newer cars get better mileage than I do. So thats about 75 cents a mile. the electric company charges me about 50 cents per kilowatt. so the roadster would cost me about $25 to fill up and only take me 160 miles, whereas my Volvo can take me nearly 500 miles on a $35 fill. Although Tesla is claiming up to 300 miles per charge now, with 45 minute fill ups. With the upgrades, of course, which pushes it well into viability if they can reduce cost and improve efficiency.

you are also forgetting the sheer cost of those new supercars of yours. the Telsa is slated to start at around $50,000. well out of the average persons range. With the 230 and 300 mile versions, you have to get expensive upgrades. pusing it well out of even the average upper middle class range.

And lastly, the first Teslas will not even be delivered until 2012, which, by that time, they will already be obsolete, or, they will have failed, because all they have now are test cars under controlled conditions. i live in the northeast, cold kills batteries. So they more than likely will not even be viable in cold weather, as the Volt is not.

The Chevy volt at only 40 mile range, does not even come close to meeting the average two-way commute for most people. The natioanl average is 26 minutes, or approximately 25 miles each way. So you would have to charge your car while at work. The average American drives 87 minutes per day, or close to 90 miles. You would have to charge your car TWICE during teh day to do all of your driving. Plus, mileage drops considerably when in cold weather. The Volt is a waste of time. Noone will buy it and it will be mothballed within two years.

That's interesting. And odd. It's been a while since I looked, but if memory serves we pay between 10 to 11 cents/kWh here in Provo. Since gas here tends to cost rather higher than the national average, I assumed electric would be the same.

All new technology costs more when it's new. My fingers are crossed that technological advances and economies of scale will bring down the cost over time. I have no reason to believe they won't.

You're talking about the Model S. They've already delivered around 600 Roadsters, and are making more at a rate of 100 / month, all of which have sold. Tesla is literally leading the charge in electric vehicles, and are even providing energy storage for companies like Daimler.

As for the cold, Tesla keeps the batteries heated (or cooled, as necessary) so performance isn't impacted. Obviously this takes energy, but it's better than running cold.

The Volt is not a pure EV. It's a serial hybrid. The 40 mile figure is just the all-electric range. Once that is exhausted, a gas-powered generator kicks on to keep you going. It has the exact same range characteristics as any other gasoline-powered car, with the bonus that, if you're driving less than 40 miles, you don't burn any gas.

We'll have to wait and see to know for sure how it works out, but just based on what I've read, it sounds like a fantastic stopgap between the gasoline car and pure electric vehicle.

You pay 50¢ per kwh at night?  That's outrageous!  If you look at EIA statistics, the average American pays less than 10¢ per kwh (even less at night), and even the most expensive areas average less than 22¢ p kwh.

And assuming you travel to work 20 days a month (a low number), your monthly commute alone is 1000 miles.  That's 13 miles to the dollar, suggesting you get 34 miles per gallon (assuming $2.50 for a gallon of gas).  This is excellent mileage for a non-hybrid.  If you work more than 20 days a month, or if you drive anywhere other than your commute, this number shoots up even higher.

So, in your particular case, paying outrageous amounts for gas, and with excellent mileage, it's theoretically possible that a pure electric car might not save you much money.  But for the vast majority of Americans, it's a much more efficient alternative.

quick one before I head to work.

I pay $2.30 for gas. And I get about 30 mpg in my very old Volvo. Most new cars average out well over 20 mpg, with many being in the 30 range. 30 isnt "excellent" any more, it is average. And yes, you cannt just look at straight$$/kwh costs. you have to look at the total bill, which included the kwh costs, the delivery charge, the line maintenance fees etc etc. I have never had an electric bill under $80 here, no matter how little electricity I used.

And yes, the Roadster is available, with the cheapest model being over $100,000 and no deliveries until 2010. I do not cosider that to be "available now". Or even "available soon". They wont have this car ready for mass markets until 2012.

The hybrid is STILL the way to go since it gets such good mileage. It actually used less oil (whether in gas or electricity) than anything available, or soon to be available. Skip the so called "green" electric car and stick with the really green Prius or Ford Fusion hybrid. The rest is just bluster.

No, you don't, because you would pay those fees anyway, electric car or no. The only number that matters when figuring how much money it costs to drive an EV is the price per kWh at the time you charge the car.

Quote

Or, to state it another way, the cheapest model is over $100,000 and you can't get one delivered until 2010, and people are STILL paying $5k to stand in line. They won't even start deliveries on the Model S (assuming it doesn't get delayed like the Roadster did) until 2012, and people are STILL willing to plunk down $5k TODAY to stand in line.

The Roadster will never be a mass-market car. It's in the same market class as a Ferrari. The Model S will never be a mass-market car, either. It's in the same market class as a Lexus. Hopefully, by the time the third Tesla rolls around, they will have driven costs down to mass-market levels.

Sure thing--today. In fact, assuming I can afford it after I get out of school, the car I most want to buy is a Ford Escape Hybrid. But that doesn't mean that EV's won't be the way to go in even a few short years. And, for some people, they're ready to go right now.

The electric bill is broken down into 3 or 4 different "per kwh" charges, PLUS a charge just for having the service.
A kwh still is more for power than gasoline. I could actually use a generator and pay less per month than I do from the electric company. I know people that have done it. the biggest problem is that generators are LOUD.

then i suggest you try it yourself.

Buy a generator and shut your electricity off for a month. See how much you save.

The stats quite often leave off all those "extra" charges the utilities throw on there. Electricity rates are typically pegged directly on oil and coal prices. Since oil rates directly affect gasoline rates, why should they be so far apart?

Looking up information on generators, a low wattage gasoline generator (won't power your entire house) will on average use .3 gallons per HOUR.

High wattage generators (will power your whole house) use upwards of 1+ gallons of gas an hour. One high wattage generator that was considered one of the most efficient by several reviews i found on differing generator sites used 1.67 gallons an hour.

Also: Many sites recommended highly AGAINST gasoline high wattage generators because of the high cost, and reccommended going either natural gas or propane, because they're cheaper fuels.

Comparison of average home and RV generators (http://www.generatorjoe.net/page.asp?id=61)

Also note that the REASON for the power grid is because mass producing electricity is much cheaper than individually producing it. In fact, the invention of the power grid is pretty much the sole reason we have such an electricity dependant society today.

Edit: You also say you pay $80/mo. for your electricity bill. You also say you pay $2.30 for gas. So $80/$2.30 = 34.78 (rounded) gallons of gas you have to use less than per month to save compared to your bill. If you ran your generator for a month, that's about 720 hours. so 34.78/720 = 0.048 gallons (rounded, again) of gas per hour you would need to use LESS THAN to save money over your electric bill.

As far as I'm aware, there are no home generators that are anywhere NEAR this efficient. The only way to save money with a generator is by SHUTTING IT OFF at every juncture you can. This kills off any extra power use while you aren't home/using it/whatever. However, this would effectively be the same as calling up the electric company and asking them to kill/turn on your power several times a day to cut excess Kwh usage, and this says nothing of the efficiency comparison.

Further edit: (sorry, i like math) Let's find out how many hours/day you would need to run to break even with the very numbers you gave us earlier. Assuming your generator is the max efficiency i could find (i.e. the lowest number) of .3 gals/hr, and we want to break even with your 80/mo. bill. So we know you pay 2.30 for gas, so 80/2.30 = 34.78 (rounded) gallons of gas per month to break even. So 34.78 / 0.3 = 115.94 (rounded) hours of electricity per month. We'll assuming just a normal 30 days/month, to give us the most amount per days on an average month (sorry, february, you freak!), so 115.94/30 = 3.86. To break even, you would need to run the generator (which at such a low wattage can't power your house fully) under 4 hours a day to break even.

I should probably note that at the time, I had gas heat and gas stove and was really only running the fridge and the TV in the evening, and it was in the fall. I probably only used about 50-60 gallons of gas at around $2 per gallon, and yes, i had packed the freezer tight and turned it off when I was not using it.

My electric bill was only $80 during bare minimu use, I was typically in the $150-$175 range.

My shower curtain is made of cloth. When I first turn on the water in the shower, I seal the edges of the curtain to the edges of the shower with water. If I don't, there's always a draft from the cold part of the bathroom.

I would sleep on my belly, but I don't like waking up with my neck in crazy land. If I sleep on my side, my arm sometimes falls asleep. I can't sleep on my back. It's too boring.

It's strange when you meet somebody you haven't seen for a while and they look totally different than they used to. Or rather, you perceive them differently but know that they look the same as they always have.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (the film) was pretty good.

Rambling again:

Today a french tour guide (attached to a location, not a tour group), after mistaking me for a French tourist told me, "I'm sorry, you just look French." I thanked her and went on my merry way. Backstory, though!

When I was in HS, an exchange student from Toledo (yeah, I'm sure she got sick of the jokes) told me that I looked like I was from Galicia (apparently a region in Spain), which I found kinda odd because I think I look rather British (brutish?). Apparently, I just have one of those (multicultural) faces. Which is different from having one of those (culture-specific) faces. Possibly. Perhaps they are the same. Other possible causes of this phenomenon not yet explored. Regardless, my new life goal is to collect as many of these thought-to-be-a-fellow-[resident of country X] experiences.

Two strange happenstances does not create a phenomenon, but it's a good start.

jeez, way to have a life outside the internet.

Do you know how much you've made your administrators worry? Do you know how many nights they've been awake in bed, crying, just hoping you would come by and post, if only to let them know you're ok?

But no, for all they know, you could have been in a back e-alley somewhere, riddled with spam, and getting high off viruses.

So, probably the worst 2 weeks ever.

1) One of my best friends randomly decided to hate me and is no longer talking to me and won't tell me what happened.  Like seriously, we hadn't talked in a few days and he randomly was like, "Don't effing talk to me anymore.  I hate you"  No idea what happened.

2) My family is freaking out at me because I'm changing schools.  I'm starting some online classes in January and transferring my credits so I can get a degree in what I actually want to major in rather than something that's just kinda similar.

3) Basically walked in on my boyfriend sleeping with someone else.

-sigh-

Sometimes I wonder why I try.

1. That sucks. Though if he doesn't feel like talking to you about whatever you did wrong, then how much can you consider him a friend?

2. That's actually good, except for the family freaking out. Don't know why they would, I would think they should be happy for you.

3. Yeah, that really sucks. IMO that calls for a break up, obviously. Cheating on your partner is one thing I cannot tolerate, it's shameful and dishonorable. I'm certain you can do better, Miyabi.

All in all, I'm sure things'll get better, dude. Every one has ups and downs through life. Anytime someone falls on some bad hardship, I'm always reminded of an old greek (least i think it was greek) story i read when i was rather young. It was about a king who was said to have a magic ring, and every time he looked at it when he was happy, he would become sad, when he looked at it when sad, he would become happy. On the day of his death, his closest servant looked at the ring, and revealed it wasn't magical, but just had an engraving that stated "This, too, shall come to pass."

I guess what I'm trying to say, is I'm sure things will end up getting better soon. :)

When I make chai (which is the tea I drink most) I make it with soy so it is thick and creamy and sweeten it with honey, vanilla, and sugar.  It's usually pretty amazing. =]

I prefer chai when it's made from a gunpoweder tea rather than a black tea, though it's harder to find. (at least in my area)

For red chai, i always pour in milk and sweeten with honey, and sometimes add a little vanilla.

Near my house there's a tea shop run by an asian couple that makes bubble tea, you ever try that? It's pretty good stuff.

Edit: This is my favorite brand of red chai, as an FYI. (http://www.amazon.com/Kalahari-Zambezi-Chai-20-Count-Boxes/dp/B000F4VS7K)

The lines of forbiddance on the left side would mean you couldn't reach through and make those chalkings. It would also be very hard to make the chalkings on the right side. And if you wait to add the lines of forbiddance so you can draw the chalkings, that leaves you open to a line of revocation. Also, it looks like at least your left two mini-circles are 6-pointed ones, in which case there's another bind point you could use. The right two mini-circles' forbiddance lines are drawn out of proportion so they won't be effective.

Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: firstRainbowRose on January 08, 2010, 10:15:56 PM
Well, is there a rule that states you have to draw your lines of forbiddance right after you draw a circle?  Couldn't you draw the inner circle, then draw the outer circles, anchoring it down with those lines of forbiddance, and then after you've drawn everything you need draw the inner lines?
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on January 09, 2010, 12:10:10 AM

Eer - I'm not entirely sure.  ha ha.

Peter - Yeah, I think you'd have to do what Mi'ch suggests and be only anchored by the outside ones and even then you'd have to draw at least one chalking before you anchored those.  (And I such at using paint for things.)  Ha ha.  I realized they were out of proportion.  From EUOLs originally drawing I first though that the outside circles might be 6 point circles, but then I drew them as 4 point.  *Shrugs*  I'll have to play with it more and probably draw it and scan it in to make a better drawing with paint.

So the deal is that the new classroom has a chalkboard.  I thought it'd be a nice surprise for Chris to have a defense drawn in chalk.  He was like "do I remember any of them?  Oh well, here's this" and drew that one.  As I took the pic I said "I'll send it to Chris and he'll be able to instantly tell what it is. "  Brandon replied with "well, it might not be even in the book.  If not, it's now the miyabi defense." and wrote that (with some issues on spelling) on the board.

Interesting to see what majors at other universities require. I can't believe you have to take four courses on a certain language. In BYU's computer science department, you pick up languages incidentally to some other course objective.

Here's my major (http://saas-dev1.byu.edu/advisement/pdf/08/693220.pdf). I'm done with most of that. It sure looks like a lot, laid out like that.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on January 13, 2010, 05:37:47 AM

They do that because my major is "game programming" and not just computer science and MOST game engines run off some version of C so the focus is there.  Just like someone who is studying to be an oncologist would take a lot more classes on different types of cancers than someone who is majoring in gynecology.

He's a Republican.  First Republican to win a senate seat in Mass. in almost 40 years.

Mass people must really be against the health bill.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: The Jade Knight on January 20, 2010, 06:25:46 AM
Well, Massachusetts already has a state-run healthcare program similar to the national one being proposed, but without a public option or insurance exchanges.

Massachusetts Democrats also outnumber Republicans 3:1.  A great many people who voted for Obama also voted for Brown.

Perhaps he's a change they can believe in?

Politics is about compromise you have to get the majority to want change or it won't. Brown won b/c he is running on a tea party platform, and whichever party can tie the tea party movement to them first will dominate Congress for the next several years.

P.S. you can knock Obama all you want, but the idiots who accused him of socialism over a year ago were wrong as well. Pundants are perhaps the stupidest people on the TV, and that includes morons like Flavor Flav
Title: Re: I would like to announce!

Brown won because the Mass health care system, which this stupid bill is based on, went bankrupt in 2 years.

What's an air blade?

I'm not sure, but it sounds really cool, like something you'd see in a movie or anime or something. This leads me to believe it's likely lame to most people and/or has a very specific mundane use.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Shivertongue on February 02, 2010, 10:44:30 PM
Some quick research shows that it could be either a  motorcycle (http://www.honda.com.vn/Modules/CMS/Upload/Article/Airblade_WhiteR.jpg'), a video game (http://www.calshop.biz/gol_2005-2006/immagini/PS2/A/AIR_BLADE_PAL_FRONT.JPG'), a fancy hand dryer that looks like it might double as an instrument of torture (http://www.j-q.com/images/Airblade.jpg'), or ...some kind of strange marching band accessory (http://www.bandshoppe.com/catalog/productDetail.do?p=Air_Blade')...

So whichever Miyabi was talking about, it is potentially cool, potentially lame, potentially strange, or potentially none of the above and I should have gone beyond the first page of results on Google.

In other announcements, someone has stolen my pants...

That band thing might be kinda cool if you were to blade the inside and strap it to your arm, though i dont know where the "air" part would come in. Seems like it would be a sci-fi type weapon.

Also: all of your links seem to have an extra ' at the end when i click on em.

The color guard at Coppell Highschool is much better..... and they are a separate entity than the marching band, you can't be in the band and guard b/c if you are in the band you must march, kinda weird in comparison to other schools but they place at state every year and they barely meet the criteria to be a 5A school.

That's exactly how all the highschools in my area work. Ive never heard of it working any other way. O.o

When I went to ISU guard was part of band and EVERYONE marched.  Color guard had to march just as much as band did, we just had to do it whilst spinning.  We were just as much part of the formations as band was.
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Patriotic Kaz on February 03, 2010, 01:55:44 AM
Well the highschool i graduated from chose the guard out of band members, generally flute players, and they were shocked when i asked why. Also, the fact that you were required to march was uncommon not unusual (in my neck of the woods it's this way for maybe 20% of the schools). And Miyabi that's the case everywhere.

P.S. Anyone like my Valentines profile?
Title: Re: I would like to announce!
Post by: Miyabi on February 03, 2010, 01:59:44 AM

Where I went it wasn't in high school.  All three high schools in this town, plus two high schools where I went in Connecticut all did band and guard things separately and guard didn't really march.  They just kinda stood there and performed while everyone else marched.

I also found an old floppy that I had written "important" in a way only I would be able to read . . . I can't for the life of me remember what is on it and I don't have any way of retrieving the data.  It's probably something silly, but I'm kind of interested to see what is on it.

Do you have any app suggestions? It's hard to decide which apps to get when so few have trial versions.

Well, first off, I suggest getting preware on your phone. This lets you get access to homebrew apps, which will increase the number of apps significantly. As well as give you access to user made patches and themes. This essentially gives you the ability to customize your phone in almost any aspect.

Instruction here: http://www.precentral.net/homebrew-apps/preware

As far as apps I use, i mainly use mediafly for a podcast streamer, pandora and slacker radio for streaming audio, Checkbook as an expense tracker, music player remix (its a homebrew app) for my music player, agenda instead of the calendar (again, i think this one is homebrew. All it is is an app that displays everything in your calendar in a chronological list).

As for gaming, i have the sims 3, earthworm jim, and scummVM (its homebrew. Its a scumm emulator engine that lets you run a bunch of old point and click games, like beneath a steel sky, maniac mansion, monkey island, etc.)

I have more than that, but those are the ones i use on a regular basis.

Another useful homebrew app i use on occasion is LED Torch. It essentially lets you turn on and off the flash on your phone to use it as a flashlight.

Edit: i suppose i should mention that sims 3 and earthworm jim are the only apps of those i listed that cost money.

I suppose (simple matters of taste aside) it depends on your perspective. I'm coming from a Palm Centro running the old and busted Palm OS, so to me, the Pre feels like the ultimate new hotness. But, compared to (for example) an iPhone, it probably doesn't look like anything special.

I liked it a lot more than the Android phones I played with. The Pre felt slick, intuitive and natural, whereas Android felt clunky and cobbled together. Android has a tone of potential, but in its current incarnation I just wasn't seeing it.

Those were pretty much my only choices, since I'm stuck on Sprint. No way in h-e-double-hockey-sticks would I even look at a Windows Mobile phone, and the iPhone, locked as it is to AT&T, is simply unobtainable for me in this stage of my life. But, for now, I'm quite happy with the Pre. It's a really nice device.

But, for now, I'm quite happy with the Pre. It's a really nice device.

I've actually played with all three (iphone, android, and webOS) and I find the pre to be the best out of them. That's why i got one. The *MAIN* reason i say this is multi-tasking. Once I got a taste of it on my phone, i cant imagine a phone without it now. It's way too common these days for me to be surfing the web, listening to music, checking email, texting, and playing a game or something like that all at once.

In andriods defense, though, I haven't played with the newest version (the one on the nexus one), which supposedly was a game changer for it.

Though, palm is apparently into some rocky times, they released their earnings yesterday and it wasn't that good. If I end up losing webOS, i'll likely move to android in the future, to see about the changes that've come about (that and I have a geek-love for google)

Edit: Also, as with anything else, anyone's preference between android, iphone, and webOS is obviously personal preference (or hardcore fandom, which each device and company have, but i honestly wish THAT could be killed off)

YET A FURTHER EDIT: Anyone ever hear of or see emblaze's first else? It's a new smartphone coming out later this year, and it just *OOZES* style from every single pore that a phone doesnt have.

I dont know all the specs on it, but if it can compete with the big players functionality-wise, it may be something worthwhile

Looks pretty slick, but the UI doesn't look as friendly as they say. The more I use any electronics, the more I just want the UI to be fast and arranged well. There are designers who study user interface with physical and electronic objects, but most of them sadly seem more interested in creating fashionable objects and UIs than in making a truly user-centric design. That said, I doubt if Emblaze has one of these kinds of designers in its employ, though often (IMO), a room full of nerds brainstorming is just as effective as one high-priced designer.

Sorry for the mini-rant. I was an industrial design major for a bit. :P

But what of the solid buttons?

If you flipped the phone over then the LED display from the top then would be on the bottom which I guess isn't too much of an issue.

well, my thoughts were that switching which hand you use changes which side the menus on. Not saying it'll do that (since this is all conjecture anyways)

Those didn't look like physical buttons to me. They looked like an extension of the touchscreen, in which case it's perfectly reasonable to expect they could have them on the left side too.

It's good to see people trying to concepts and trying to innovate instead of just aping the iPhone like so many manufacturers tried to do for so long.

That I am annoyed at the fact that the program I am writing for class works fine in Windows 7 running on Parallels, but when I move it to my sister's Vista box it doesn't work. Grrr.

Can you guys tell me if it works on your Windows boxes?

I tried it on my Windows 7 machine. Oddly, it said I had DirectX 9 installed, and I needed DirectX 9c or later... I was fairly sure DirectX 10 was standard on 7 and Vista.

It also was missing d3x9_28.dll. Then the program died a horrible death :)

Also I would like to announce that the other day I almost caught my house on fire.

Fire: "O rly?"

Miyabi: "Hrm...i see your point."

Speaking of posts counts and the like....
I had an account called Comatose, and then I got really into this other forumn which was a bit smaller, then one of the first two mistborn books came out (I can't remember which), and I couldn't wait to theorize so I jumped back on.
Unfortunately, during that hiatus I stupidly deleted the old account... It's not a huge deal, but there isn't any way to link up those older posts to my account is there?  They are still there, just under a Comatose who is a guest.

Heh, ive been able to grow a thick, bushy beard since i was about 14. However, my youngest brother can barely eek out a mustache. The brother between us can only grow a chinstrap, so the bear potential went down as the number of children went up.

I agree with miyabi.  I never want a beard, and I dislike shaving.  They're good for some people though.
As for bear potential going down, a similar thing happened in my dad's family.
My eldest Uncle has a full head of hair, my second uncle is finally almost bald, my dad's been balding since he turned twenty.  Looks like Grandpa and Grandma splurged on Dennis, and realized they didn't have enough hair left for their younger children...
All I can say is, I'm the oldest, and my hairline is similar to my mother's mother's family, and they don't go bald, so here's hoping!

XNA's a framework, not a language. :P

The language is C#, though technically they say any .net language could be used with it, but MS only has a package that directly integrates with C# :P

Also, i'm relatively well versed in the use of XNA, if you need any help. Also, the game adaptation of the game of life ive been working on, i'd gladly love to send you the code for that if you think it'd help ya learn anything, it's in XNA.
