Title: Diablo 3, Baby!
Post by: Parker on June 28, 2008, 03:36:45 PM
Sure, it's probably two years from actual release (to go by Blizzard's usual release schedule), but this morning in France, Blizzard announced Diablo 3. I'm very excited for this--wasted many a happy hour with 1 and 2, and I can't wait for number 3. That means Blizz now has Lich King, Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 lined up for release--quite the schedule. Check out the game at the link below:

The details are pretty sparse, but you get a pretty good sense of it from the gameplay videos, and I'm incredibly excited. I'm also filled with compelling need to play Diablo 2 again. Time to re-install, I guess.

Good lord, I can't wait for this game to come out. I'm not sure if I'm more excited about this or Starcraft II, but I wouldn't want to live on the difference. Now we just need Warcraft IV...

There's no question for me--I'm ten times more excited about Diablo 3 than Starcraft 2.

Also take note that a few months ago Blizzard allowed you to attack CD keys for games you already owned to a blizzard account, so if you're like me and have scratched up disks you can download--for free--the installers if you still have the CD key, and the patch for D2 that came out a few weeks ago removes the requirement for having a CD in your drive to play.

For me, Diablo 2 is an old favorite that I just can't ever put away for good. It's too much fun to go back and visit. I'll have to check into that  CD key deal, Sprig--sounds interesting. I've been waiting for this Diablo 3 announcement for a very long time. It excites me more than the only other game announcement that would really intrigue me, which will be WoW2, whenever and ifever that comes out. I just wish we'd be seeing this game sooner rather than later. Christmas would be sweet, but it'll likely be Christmas of 2009, if then. Sigh.

I think the reason we all love Descent so much is that it's essentially a board game of Diablo: you hit stuff, you get treasure, you get tougher, you hit bigger stuff.

Wow, that one sentence defines so much of my life. It's almost depressing, but actually it's awesome.

An interesting note, the male Barbarian for diablo three is the same one from two--just aged 20 years.

Joystiq has a really good article on the design of D3 and the changes they're making as well as a Q&A with the audience
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/wwi08-diablo-3-design-fundamentals/

Highlights:

Q: Will the seven classes from Diablo II be kept as well as the new classes you're introducing?
A: We have no plans to carry classes over. It's a fresh start, we haven't finalized the final classes or how many there will be. We're not trying to bring back Diablo II classes.

Q: With the loot system in Diablo II, the player with the fastest connection often got the loot. Will this change?
A: We're changing the drop system. Monsters will drop multiple items, each player will see loot generated for them.

I loved the first two games and I'm really excited for this new one.

I am looking forward to a whole new set of classes.

DANGIT.  I was always that person with the fast connection. xP  But I guess this is more fair.

I know this is horrible, since D2 started it all
but... it's one of the few games I've ever had that I never wanted to finish. (the others being ANtaeus Rising and C&C (the first one) ). It got tedious very quickly. I almost resent people getting excited over D3, i just can't build up the energy to do that either.

Why is that?  Are you afraid you'll have to finish it after you start? Haha

no, i'm afraid it'll be more goober clicking without an engaging story and lots of tedious exploring so I can click the same goobers over and over.

Did you see the Witch Doctor class?

I KNOW what I'm playing as. >.<

Goober clicking.  I never heard it put that way before.  I did think the story was good though.  I'm glad it will be a while before it comes out.  I will probably need to upgrade or replace my PC to even play it, and I definitely can't afford to do that now.  Besides, I will be busy with Too Human very soon.

Awww, I see.  I was never a fan of that myself.  But I LOVED the Age of Empires games.

When I saw the trailer last month the first thought that came to me was "blast, now I HAVE to upgrade my computer."

I've been a big fan of Diablo since it came out and still semi-regularly pop in Diablo II for some old-time fun.

I did that a few weeks ago. . . . I remember when those graphics were bomb. . . now I'm like. . . . uhhhh. . . OK.

Luckily I'm one of the rare few who can pop in an extremely old game with horribly outdated graphics and still feel the same love for it as when I first played it. (not saying anyone here is like that, but a lot of people are  :)) To me, graphics don't make a game, sure they're nice to look at, but if the story stinks, then whats the point? (FFX as an example)

Yes FFX and FFVII are prime examples of both cases.

I really hope they remake VII. . . I mean it would be stupid of them NOT to.  SOOO many people would go buy a PS3 JUST for that game.

I'd just like to boast that, after hearing about D3, I got together with seven other D2 fans and played through the game on normal in one day (with no maphack or twinks, and stuff). It was probably the coolest 11 hours o f my life. I'm even writing a paper about it in my English 1010 class.

I did the same with a few of my friends. Well, the playing together part, not the 11 hour game beatdown.  ;)

I am intently waiting for the release of this game. This and SC2, although I'm not a huge RTS gamer, the first one wasn't too bad.

I just want a Warcraft IV... Or maybe a Lost Vikings sequel. Yes, I realize that World of Warcraft technically advances the story so there never has to be a WC4. :(

But I'll be picking up Diablo 3 when it drops, not a fan of the 'goober-clicking' game play but the story satisfies enough to play through. Starcraft 2 looks amazing as well.

Ha, ha, ha, ha I would LOVE a new Lost Vikings game. Such good memories of that game. That game and Lemmings. Give me another Lemmings game!

But as for Diablo III, and in terms of the so defined "goober-clicking" (that cracks me up for some reason lol), I think I like the "goober-clicking" is fun in terms of just letting loose some stress on hordes of evil demons.  ;D

You've got a point, goober clicking can be really fun, sometimes. And seeing hordes of little demons get slaughtered... that's fun!

There is definitely a meditation aspect to the game play of it.

On that "goober-clicking" note, it becomes incredibly fun on a touchscreen. We installed the original Diablo on our computers at the restaurant where I work, which are touchscreen, and it was awesome. Only problem is that you can only have it be left or right click....  still, wildly poking at the screen is really really fun.

Someone should totally buy one of the new HPs that are like completely touch screen and upload a video to Youtube of playing Diablo. ROFL.

Lol a Blizzard release date doesn't mean anything. I'm pretty sure they wanted to get it out before christmas, like SC Ghost, but we all know where that went. So, a Blizzard relase date really doesn't mean much. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong :P

Yeah...Blizzard doesn't fall into the release date trap. They learned years ago not to set one until the game was actually done. Which will happen "when it's done."

And they're established enough to be able to get away with this.

Yea no kidding. What they have released looks so sick, and the new classes have got me drooling. If there's one game I'm pumped up about coming up I think this would be the one :D
