Title: Brandon's new paperback releases
Post by: Phaz on June 04, 2008, 09:31:09 PM
Has anyone picked these up yet?  I stopped by the local Borders to try and grab them.  The computer said they had 9 MB2 and 6 of MB1 in stock, but no one was able to find them anywhere.  They had 2 copies of the old MB1 paperback, but none of the new ones.  We also checked the new paperback releases sections and wandered around the store looking for a display.  No luck.  That makes the 3rd time I've gone to that Borders looking for Brandon's books and returned empty handed.  I don't think I'll be going back there for anything.  I ordered 2 copies off amazon yesterday, but it looks like they might take a few days to ship.  Does anyone know if those will still count towards the first week sales numbers?

I know they have new cover art but is anything else different?  There were some mistakes made in MB1 that made it into the hardcover and first paperback version, does anyone know if they have been fixed in this version?  Anything else about them that's different?

I would think that it does count for the first week's sales, because you paid the money with a credit card (thus making the transaction). The only thing that doesn't happen on the first week is the shipping!

I bought my two on Amazon as well. I recommend others to get them as well... they make great Father's Day presents, as well as Christmas in June presents!

Well, I don't know.  Sometimes when I've ordered things online, my credit card is not charged until the day that the order is shipped.  So my guess is that it would depend on which day Amazon ships them to you - if "a few days" is still within the week, the purchase would count as first week sales, even if you don't actually receive the books until after the first week.

I checked both my local Borders and Barnes and Noble locations on Tuesday with no luck. In fact, they had no Brandon Sanderson novels at Barnes and Noble at all.

I checked their website the next day, and it said they had the Well of Ascension paperback in stock, so I went back. They didn't have any displays, nor were they in with all the other new paperbacks. But there was a nice whole in sci-fi/fantasy section where they had made room for WoA. There must have been space for about 8 or 9 copies, and I got the very last one.

I made a polite suggestion at the customer service desk that they should stock some more of them.  ;D

I must be the lucky one then.At my borders there was a huge shelf set up in front of the fiction section with rows of MB2.
It had a nice poster of the mb2 cover hanging from the top and everything.I didnt look for the the MB1 because i only had 10$ on me at the time.Ill go look for it this weekend.

I don't suppose you took a picture of the display? >_>

Yeah, I wanna see this "mystical display" EUOL blogged about too.

The Borders I was at had about 7 copies of the new MB1 and about 10 copies of MB2.  I was quite suprised.  Previously I would find maybe two MB1 with the old cover.

For the people who did find them at Borders, where were they?   Just in the fantasy/sci fi section or "new paperback release" or a separate display?

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for a paperback to go on Amazon's 4 for 3 sale? I want to help Brandon's first week sales numbers, but I wanted to do this sale as well, since I have other things I want too, but I don't know how long I'll have to wait.

Hmm, I have no clue.

BUT I was miffed when Amazon.com wouldn't load earlier today. I was going to put in my order (using the nifty gift card my bros gave me for my b-day). But the site had some kind of error. Very surprising for a juggernaut like Amazon!

Be careful.  I had that problem before, and come to find out it was a virus. We ended up having to call our virus scan program and have them take over my computer to fix it.

Amazon was actually down earlier today (see Scalzi's blog), so it's probably not a virus this time.

Hey, they actually had two of the new paperback WoA at B. Dalton. Which is nice, since when the hardback came out I had to special order it, because there wasn't a single copy in my city  :-\

I grabbed both new releases today.

Out here in podunk, Kansas (read: anywhere but Topeka, Lawrence, Kansas City, or Wichita), there's a serious dearth of real bookstores (Borders, B&N, even Half-Price Books - none).

Tried the skimpy mall Waldenbooks, which only had 1 old-version Final Empire paperback and one Elantris.  I was worried, but apparently Hastings recognizes Brandon's appeal, because they had several copies of WoA and the new FE.

I don't rush to buy books very often, but on the strength of my reading of FE, Brandon is worth the show of selling power.

For all you people who love to theorize about Mistborn 3, the new Final Empire paperback has a preview chapter. I shall discuss it in the Hemalurgy thread...

Hurrrrm, previewing book 3 in the back of book 1? Is it spoiler-free for book 2? @_@

It appears so. Spook is the main character for it, so not too much of... Vin's exploits are revealed. There are mists in the daytime referenced as well as koloss and Emperor Venture... but nothing of the key twist at the end of MB2.

I can only presume the logic behind this thinking (since the Well of Ascension doesn't have the Hero of Ages preview, but a preview to a non-Brandon book) is because of the rebate you can get from this edition for MB3.

Anybody know who decides what (if any) preview chapter gets included at the end of a book?  I assume it's mostly someone in the publishing house, but does the author or his agent also get a say?

I got my copies from amazon but haven't checked through them yet.

Does anyone know if the text is at all different (ie errors corrected) in either book?

There should be at least a couple errors that were corrected in the MB2 paperback (namely the part where Vin asks Clubs to burn Bronze), but the MB1 paperback probably matches the later printings of the old-cover-version, which had some corrections made.

Not sure if people are still having trouble finding copies of these books, but if you are in the Salt Lake City area, the Borders across from the Fashion Place Mall has on the the displays...at least I think it is one of the displays.  I gotta say, I expected a little more out of Borders than what I saw...actually, I didn't.  I should be happy they pulled their collective heads out of the sand to do something at all.

Anyways, the Borders had quite a few paperback copies of both volumes.  The were morons and placed the display facing away from the door entrance, behind their customer service desk, and the Thriller section.  What can I say, intelligence was never that manager's strong point.  I was gonna take a picture, but I didn't consider it picture worthy.

Ookla - sent you a PM - gimme a shout.

I got my copies of the new MB1 and MB2 paperbacks last week. Yay! No more Ugly Vin.  :D I'll be re-reading these again now that I don't have to lug around a big hardcover book.

I need those sample chapters!  Does anyone know if you can get them online anywhere, I already have the hardcovers, and I won't be in a book store for about a month!

I feel your pain coma. My Barnes and Noble has the WoA paperback, but they didn't have any MB1 paperbacks when I went, so I have yet to read anything from them either.

Just a quick update.  It looks like me going in time and time again asking for Brandon's Books might of had some effect, as the local Borders (which never has stocked him well, if at all) finally saw the error in their ways and today had a pretty decent amount of shelf space dedicated to Brandon's books.   They had at least as many copies as some of the really popular authors (Martin, Rothfuss, etc) if not more.

I thought I'd show them that they made the right decision by picking up more copies of the MB paperbacks and a copy of Elantris.

Mcnally's didn't have them yet, and I have no barnes and noble or anything like that, Mcnally's is huge, but they just have a few copies of the old paperback! (like 2), although, this is where I first set eyes on Elantris, so I still love the store, and they have most of the books I want.
I just really really want those sample chapters!!!!!
I can't go without them!

IF Brandon hasn't posted them on the site within the next week or two and I have some spare change to buy the new copy, MAYBE I will type them up. ;)

What sample chapters?  I've got all the versions available, and the only sample I've found is in the old version the prologue for WoA, and in the new version of FE there's the prologue for HoA which Brandon just posted... I could be wrong, but I think we've got everything that's avaiable at the time.  Unless I'm the confused one (which I could be)

The prologue for hero of ages and the sample chapters in the back of final empire are not the same. They are both VERY interesting, however.

I have found all of Brandons books at both Barnes and Nobles and Boarders in the area im from im Massachusetts. I was fairly surprised at this because in the past i have had issues with finding books from authors at either location and i figured due to Brandon being a fairly new author they would have a small selection. needless to say i was plesantly surprised.

I wish Mcnally Robinson would hop on the Brandon Train.
And miyabi, if you did type up those chapter you would definately be my hero for life (or at least until I want something else very badly, and someone provides).  Who knows, maybe Brandon will post them on his site soon.  I hope!

eh, i could be wrong but i don't think Brandon wants us to use this forum to hand out chapters of his books. Quotes are perfectly ok, compilations of the epigraphs are plenty fine, but i would make sure to get his permission before you start posting whole sections of his books here.

Okay, I just double checked, and here's what you get in the new pb releases.

FE: Prologue for HoA
WoA: You get the first chapter of a book by Daniel Abraham titled "An Autumn War".  Before that you do get a page and a half summery of book one, but that was also in the hardback version.  Is this the sample chapter you guys are refering to?

That's interesting.  They must print different sample chapters in different copies.  In the FE paperback I bought for my brother's birthday it had a sample chapter of MB3, from Spook's viewpoint.    (I read the chapter before giving it to my brother. :))

Hm... I guess you're right, that isn't the prologue.  (And that's what I have as well.)  It also isn't the first chapter (at least, so far as I remember it isn't the first chapter.  I went to a signing where EUOL read it to us, and it had to do with Elend.)  Now I wonder what it is exactly... *starts reading*

I just got to read that sample chapter myself today. I was browsing a local bookstore, and there it was! I think I was making quite a fool of myself in the store (I did a little happy dance), but I really don't care. It was awesome and it's making me burst with anticipating for HoA.
