Title: The Hobbit!!!!!
Post by: Parker on December 18, 2007, 08:23:01 PM
Hey all. I just saw this, and I can't express how excited I am. Peter Jackson and New Line have kissed and made up, and things are on for two more LOTR films. The first will be the Hobbit, the second will be a bridge between the Hobbit and Fellowship. Jackson's going to at the very least executive produce. No word on if he'll direct as well or not. But still--I think this is awesome news.

I think I'm happy about this. The second movie they propose has be both intrigued and worried. I'm okay with Tolkien's world moving beyond what he originally created. I think it has generally gotten bigger than him. I do have hope for the Hobbit translating well to screen. It really isn't a bad story, all a lot of what happens will work better told visually than in writing.

The idea of a second movie strikes me as bizarre. Not sure what it could cover. Balin's trip back to Moria?

Very cool to get a new Hobbit movie, though.

Hoooooray! More hobbitses. I'm extra excited about this, although I can't figure out either what the second movie woudl be about. Hmmm.

I'm not sure what they would do as a second movie for the Hobbit.  What story would they tell, unless the break the Hobbit in two.

Also, I'm not sure Peter Jackson is the right person for this movie.  Granted, I am not a Hobbit fan, the overall tone of The Hobbit is far different than Lord of the Rings.  It's more of a children story as opposed to a story for adults.   I don't know if PJ has the ability to direct something like that.  It's got to be more than just special effects and action scenes.

I can't wait for the Hobbit to be made! I've been hoping for this kind of announcement for ages!
Why are they going to bridge the two? Why not spend some of that energy and film some of the stories in the Silmarillion?? There are some really excellent things in there that rarely see the light of day. :(

Peter Jackson will be producing, not directing (he's busy directing other things for the next coupld years). They're still looking for a director.

Because it's never too early to have a blog about the movie (http://www.thehobbitblog.com/).

I'd like to see what they're going to do for The Hobbit - and I'm curious to know what the second movie will be about. I think the two books managed to transition themselves just fine, I don't see the need for another one.

Here's hoping they don't turn into just another cruddy moneymaking POS, like they did with the sequels to Pirates of the Carribean, the Matrix, etc. My apologies if anyone is a fan of the sequels of either of those movies, but I disliked the second sequels for both and have yet to see the third.

EDIT: As a final note, I'm a bigger fan of the books than I am the movies, despite having read the books second. They took out so much, which is understandable from a filmmaker's point of view, but was disappointing as a fan, even with the special edition versions.

I am eager to see what they do with The Hobbit. I love the book, as I did the others. I am not sure about a middle movie though, but will probably see it, if for no other reason than to see what they made it about.

Has anyone else seen this link? It reminds me of why I truly loathe MTV....

I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry when they suggested David Bowie for the role of Thranduil.

David Bowie is a god among men, the likes of which only Billy Idol can compare too.

Oh dear me.....David Bowie frightens me......I was fine with the Laberynth until HE showed up.....

Please, nobodies are best for this kind of movie with the exception of a certain select few (like Ian McKellan)

Wow... some people like David Bowie...

This is a revelation to me... is there a movie or something he's been in that I could watch and understand possibly why people aren't as freaked out by him as I am?

it seems to me that if you were fine until Bowie showed up, you couldn't have been fine for very long. Doesn't he appear like, 5 minutes in?

You guys *do* realize that Bowie is not primarily a movie star, right? He's released around thirty albums as a musician and performer. He's one of the great music geniuses of popular music. In all seriousness, he belongs in the same category as Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

I can see how someone could be freaked out by David Bowie. That being said, I am afraid that I agree with SE, he is a genius, as a showman and a singer/songwriter. I love his music, have since I was a child, and I loved Labyrinth more because of his role in it. I don't see that it would have been nearly as good with someone else in that role. Just my two cents.

Right... and that's what makes him scary as an actor. I'm having a hard time thinking of a musician who has made a non-scary transition to film...

But it's all just speculation. :)

I agree that most musicians are aweful in film.

However, I can't say that about David Bowie. He does a good job in Labyrinth despite how cheesy the movie is and gives an incredible performance in The Prestige. Not to mention he has several voice acting credits.

He was great in The Prestige. Completely transparent.

honestly, I like Will Smith. For someone who started his career rapping with DJ Jazzy Jeff he makes a decent action star. Hardly the best actor out there, but he could hardly be called "scary." And let's face it, Phil Collin's 30 seconds in Hook weren't horrible (however, the rest of his movie career helps your case). Oh, and Ice Cube. He hasn't been all bad either.

Y'know, those are some good examples.

I'm not a J-Lo fan, but I will admit I did like the movie that was almost like a remake of the Julia Roberts one... gimme a moment... Enough. That's it. She actually did a decent job in that one. I'm not really sure if she's an actress turned singer or singer turned actress though.

As a sidenote, I loved Labyrinth as a kid. It's been a while, but I'd love to see it again - I'd stick it beside my copy of The Dark Crystal. Hehe. Wasn't Bowie's character supposed to really eccentric and a bit creepy? I'm pretty sure the feeling it gives you was intentional, that's how they made the character.

Very eccentric and really creepy.  Good role casting!!  ;D
