Title: I am a newbie, be gentle.
Post by: apbadd on December 12, 2007, 05:19:39 AM
I first heard of Brandon Sanderson earlier today.  Like many other people in the world the name was introduced to me with a particular recent announcement.  I was skeptical to hear that some individual I had never heard of would contribute greatly to AMOL.  But from fan reviews I have read of your works and just based upon the feeling I get about you I am pleased of the choise Harriet made.

I plan on picking up your works and giving them a go (though I may have to get through my current reading list).

 A little about me:

I was introduced to fantasy at the age of 14 when I was in 9th grade (1994).  The author that opened my eyes was Terry Brooks.  Shortly thereafter I ventured into other series.  The most notable being WOT.  I have read books 1 - 6 3 times, books 7 - 10 2 times, and book 11 just once for now.

Over the past couple of years I have expanded my horizons by including more authors in my reading rotation (before I would tend to re-read books by a very few authors).  This was done because of the influence of posters on the Terry Brooks forums (which is also where I learned that you would be taking on AMOL).

All the best of luck to you.  It really seems like the fans that post here are family or friend.  This new fan hopes that he can be your friend someday as well  :)  San Tan Heights Ward represent!

I'm not a family or friend, just a fanatic...  :) but they all seem pretty nice, even if they have a bunch of inside jokes  ;) Welcome! And I promise you you will become a fanatic too! I'm a big chicken when it comes to new fantasy authors, as IMO often times they fall painfully short. But Brandon is up there with the greats! I was thinking today how lucky I was to have a signed book by him cause I can see it --50 years from now-- Brandon Sanderson Dies at 93  ;) Fans and Authors mourn the passing of a man considered one of the greatest writer's of his genre. His books paved the way for many young writers to realize their dreams.--

you know, or something like that...

Welcome. Glad to see your asylum's

Yeah.. I just stumbled in her Monday myself and wasnt going to read any of his works until after AMOL... but I failed miserably at that. So about 6 hours ago I downloaded version 3.0 of Warbreaker and I am now over halfway done with it. Quite captivating. I think I shall be making a run to the bookstore this weekend in search of his other works.

Woops, the format of this forum has confused me.  I thought that each author's section is an autonomous forum in itself (meaning that posting elsewhere in the forum may not be viewed by that author or his fans).  My apologies.

I'm nicer to newbies than many others.

I've decided that detached condescension is cooler than angry reprisals.

if you really want, I can put you in your place. We used to reserve that for Entropy, but he hasn't been around too much lately.

Hmm.. if you feel you must, but I know my place.. I am a small peon in the scheme of things with not much more use than a speck of dust before the magnificence of the grand oldbies!!

**prepares to be flogged**

well, you are properly obsequious, so there will be no flogging at this time.

Wow, you guys do floggings here?  Those were banned in my last forum I joined.  We also had a Sharp Newbie Stick with Pink Fuzzies.  Now we just have a barbeque with the newbies.  *evil smile*

Thank You m'Lord. Thank You.

Floggings are a tradition. Letting them die, let alone prohibiting them, would be tragic.

instead of sharp sticks, I have ninja monkeys. They eat the pink fuzzies.

And they do tricks!

Does haircutting count?

or perhaps immitating forum regular Tage?

or perhaps impersonating an ipod commercial?

Oh, but they can't be owned. They follow SE's every command because he has a supernatural aura that has proven irresistible to all things simian/ninja.

I only wish that m'Lord does not see the need to release one of his ninja monkeys after me. For one, I am not worthy of such an execution. :)

Ninja monkies?

What about Pirate Chimps?

Though I happen to command hordes of chipmunkeys and vampirates (rats swarms on unpaid vacation, dastardly nibblers), I accept my newbiehood and shall prepare to be flogged.

Now about Sanderson:

Who knew the creator of Mistborn could be an honest-to-goodness mormon straight outta Utah? Alright, so most of you did. Shut up.

What I mean is, religion is creeping into the strangest crevices. I don't mean to offend anybody, but like Douglas Adams basically said "It surprises me that such intelligent people could be religious." You'd think people in more logical professions like science and writing would be inclined to atheism, but I've noticed an increasing rate in the 'people I thought I liked with their heads in the clouds' category.

I want to know if you agree with me on this premise: fantasy writers might be prone to religion because they're dreamers.

Maybe, "Intelligent people of all stripes can be religious, because there is no inherent contradiction."

Who said that? Nevermind, it was vague anyway.

It just strikes me as weird that intelligent people can watch our existence be dissected at amazingly acute levels, yet continue to believe in something so intangible and obviously contrived.

My theory: nurture is the culprit. Society is brainwash. Example: humans are inherently racist. Only by the pressures of our peers do we shed this discrimination. Primitive man would have immediatly assumed a different colored stranger to be dangerous. It would makes sense in those times. If he has different colored skin, maybe there are other things you don't know about him. What if he is stronger than you? What if he uses this strength to take your food and home?

Actually athiests are a minority in the scientific community, over 60% say they're religius or spiritual (as in they don't believe in god but believe that there's some higher power) so you're comments aren't just wrong they're were clearly said to try and offend others because of how you phrased it.  We expect people on this site to treat eather other with respect and flame bating is not allowed, discussions are however even on topic like this--just be respectful.

If you wish to discuss this more please make a thread in the rant's board where discussions like this belong, Brandon's board is for discussing his books.
