Just and idea of Vin while she's riding in the carriage before Kelsier jumps in, and is looking out the window. This is when she goes to her first social function of course, the ball at Keep Venture.
It was a really quick sketch, but I had to put something up here. They'll get better.

Thanks! Hopefully, when I get a tablet, they'll get a lot better, I simply sketched this out because of impulse, haha. Thus the dress is very simple and the inside of the carriage isn't done.
I wanted to draw the part where Kelsier jumps in and there's a look of shock on her face, funny scene.

Oh, and thanks for the clarification, Elena. I'm still somewhat new to Boston myself. We should get together sometime. :) I've been here 1 1/2 yrs. I'm from Utah, Orem in fact. Went to BYU for my master's in American literature. Now I am studying Publishing & Writing at Emreson College.
How are you adjusting to life in Boston? Speaking of adjusting, my brother is adjusting to life in Central America--El Salvador, to be exact--where he is serving a mission for my church, La Iglesia de Jesu Christo de las Santos de los Ultimos Dias. Cool, I can say it in Spanish. ;D I took a couple years of Spanish, but it is woefully "rusty" now. *sigh* Eric, my brother, is doing very well with the language, which is great. He is always telling us interesting stories about the people and the culture, so I enjoy that. Anyhow, gotta get back to work...

You can see the previous art I put here on deviant (In Scraps), but I've replaced it with this one for official fanart. This one's much better, it took me a while but I'm finally happy with how I've drawn Vin, I'll move onto other characters now.

Shrain - That's really awesome, I did some missionary work over the summer with my church back home, I went to Spain for a few weeks, very cool. Don't worry, your spanish can't be that bad, mine is getting pretty bad though since I've been away from home for so long. Yea, I really miss the culture back home in Guatemala, very different from the U.S., that and the sweets. I'm currently and English major, but I'm probably switching to art sometime in the next year. I really wanted to screenwriting for a while, but i gave up thinking I'd rather work with Japan Animation.

Wow. Must say that I'm impressed with that second one as well. (Though you're right, the one you replaced is a bit awkward with the way the head looks.) Still, that's a very nice interpretation of the mistcloak.
What scene would I most like to see drawn. Hum... I'd have to say:

I'm currently working on a version of Kelsier, seeing if I like it or not. Those are really dynamic scenes, I'll definitely try.
Thanks, -blushes- I'm glad you like my artwork. ^.^ Though I'm a bit confused on the clothing in the Mistborn Setting, with the noblemen suits and all. If anyone would like to clarify this for me, that would be awesome.

Mistborn setting is loosely pre industrial England for clothing styles. Early 1800s, particularly for the men, though few of the men wear hats. (Breeze puts one on occasionally, but he's one of the few I mention.) Kelsier would usually have worn a buttoning shirt and pressed trousers, then.

That helps alot, I'll check that out and hopefully, it'll come out alright. And I hope you're considering Mistborn to be more of an animated film (well, I'd prefer series so there would just be three arc according to the books, and tehrefore you could stay true to the books...better...ish...) than a motion picture.

Hope you like, very sketch-like...like the rest of them. Please comment on what to change or what to keep, I would really appreciate some help so I could eventually get these to be more and more accurate.
Also, I have more of an Idea what the suit are supposed to be, so would the women's clothing be from the era? The corsets don't seem as prominent though.

For the women, I actually went a little bit earlier, choosing more medieval style gowns. Corsets are overused in fiction of this style, and I was feeling bugged by them, so I stayed away. Gowns with lots of petticoats to make them flare at the skirt, then tight through the waist and bust, often with ornate sleeves. Not full blown, overdone renaissance sleeves mind you.
Actually, to be honest, I mashed modern prom dresses with medieval dresses, and came up with a hybrid in my mind. A couple of modern gowns I used as a reference:

That Kelsier looks pretty good, though as I said, Kelsier didn't often go with the full suit--he was more casual than many. Breeze always has on his full vest and coat, but Kelsier would often do without either. In the early chapter where he meets Dox on the wall, however, he would have dressed like that. Personally, I also envision him with hair curling down rather than going back, but that's a matter of personal imagery, and I don't know that I talked about it much in the text.

Curling down? It's disheveled, I know, but I'm a little confused with that description.
Those dresses really make everything alot easier for me, thanks so much. More like debutante...ish. I had alot of fun with that suit, I think I'm going to be enjoying drawing the rest of them, just for those suits.
Haha.
Anywho, that Kelsier was like my first Vin, jsut a prototype a sketch. by my third Vin it got alot better, although she was in a semi-shift...thing. So, the next one will be better. It's really nice to get feedback from the actual author, leaves less room to deter from the acutal book. It's great, now I feel like I know what I'm doing. Haha.

Yes, much much too odd for my tastes at times, at others I simply go jellybeans. Enough with my ranting, I will soon post another drawing. I'm trying to work on one with Dox, Breeze, Clubs, Ham, Kelsier, Vin and maybe Yeden. The whole group. I'm also trying to work on an Elend/Vin picture. Particularly the part when he asks her to leave because he's afraid for her, and she's simply like: uhh...nuu.

(In my very conservative dress style opine: the first looks like a kindergarten project pasted on a dress, and the second looks like somebody chopped the top section off in the desperate attempt to make it sexier and merely made it look cut up. [Nothing says classy like "I can see your bra straps"])

No update today, people. Not like anyone ever reads this. I promise something tomorrow night after my art class. I'm always pumped after that class. Anywho, I'm going to do the stained glass and ruler/kelsier battle scene. I might do them at different angles. Therefore looking more like an intense scene in a manga.

Yea some modern designs are funny looking. But nonetheless, poofy-ness is still the best thing since sliced bread.
I'm hopefully going to enter in the RSoM 8 contest. Something to do with modernized pirates and mutiny. It was weird when I came up with it. Accordingly to my friend Benjamin, it was either that or cowboys/bananas in aqua-space.

So hopefully I'll get some of that information up, so I can get suggestions and whatnot or simple feedback. If you care, that is. If you don't -shrug- I'll just go drink some more Boba Tea.

Finally, Kelsier and the Lord Ruler in a standstill, pretty much before the Lord Ruler backhands him. Gotta love the spear. Anywho, sorry this took so long, I started talking about Bleach with my suitemate, she just got into it. Honestly, it started with a great storyline, but the short-cut animation just wants my brain cells to commit hara-kiri. Enough of that. I hope you like this version, I'll do one more from a eagle-eye type view, or any other bird if you'd like. Please comment with suggestions and general thoughts, I really hope you like it ^^. It's quite simple, partly because I wanted it up, and because I'm dying to draw more fanart as well.

I know this is terrible of me, I haven't been on in ages, not that anyone cares, and my English grammar has gotten a bit worse. Well, my English in general. I've been in Korea, that's why. Actually, I was in L.A. studying my korean to come here, Korea, and I've been quite busy. Found out that I'm not going back to Boston because I got offered an internship at Fortune Fashions's art department or possibly at Disney. But who knows. So, it is 3 am and I can't sleep, slept all day here then woke up at midnight, and I'm at a PC BANG...like a Cafe Internet (In spanish) without the coffee and a bunch of gamers instead. Anywho, I'm here with my cousin becuase he noticed that I couldn't sleep....well. Hopefully I'll be able to post some stuff, I'll probably not.
But that's not what I'm depressed about, I'm missing the biggest fantasy summer of my life. Mistborn: Well of Ascension (for one), Red Seas under Red Skies by Scott Lynch, Harry Potter DH and the OotP movie (of course), Stardust the movie, and I know I'm missing something else but I can't remember what.
Instead I'm taking 2 art classes, and kroean language class and teaching english while I'm here, my parents believe that's a bit more productive. Anywho, so the good news is that I'm TRYING to post more things, but I can't get on deviant here, I'll be considerably better at drawing and I'll have loads to do when I get back home.
Any fans in L.A. should contact me..we'll...have...a..soda?
Yea, just wanted to tell you, if anyone cares, that I'm still alive and I'll be back in the U.S. by the end of August.

That almost sounds to me more like the evening gowns of the cival war times. They pulled the farthingale (hoop skirt) from the ren times, but the sleeves were a lot more relaxed. Vary little medieval in the outfits since that style was more of an under dress which was worn over long periods of times without being washed or taken off, and an over dress which was changed more oftan, and taken off while sleeping. Ren dresses are a bit like it, but as you said there were the big sleeves, as well as bumrolls to make the hips look big (which I think was the insperation for the big hoops for the hips during the 18th century and french revolution.)
Anywho, I was going to ask what type of clothing you were thinking of with Elantris and Warbreaker?

I thought your sketches of Vin were rather amazing, and while i don't know much about art, I might suggest that kelsier's feet seem rather blockish, however i don't want to be insulting, and you can ignore this comment if you wish. It's just something that didn't work for me personally. I would really like to see those ones that were suggestd by EUOL, he picked some good moment to see depicted.

Here's what's going on:
I will depict those scenes soon, but I don't have a scanner available to me at the moment, but I'm trying. I take korean classes for four hours in the morning, teach english, and then go to my illistration and 3d max classes for 3 hours at night, and then I have about 1 and a half hours of homework to do. ALSO, I'm entering the RSOM 8 contest, but I forget if you can submit more than one entry.
Anywho, trying to decide between some paintballing pirates, out of the ordinary fairies and purple dragon poems, a radio man and the unusual relationship between tibby the cat and a brownie, finding newton, or perhaps something from the old polina...as my friend likes to say.
So, I'll try to post something soon. Can't wait till I get back home so I can actually start using the stuff i'm learning.
P.S. I do think that first sketch of Kelsier sucks...so don't worry about insulting me.

I lived in Korea from age 19-21. I don't know if you are familiar with the LDS (Mormon) religion or not, but a lot of us when we're between 19 and 23 go on missions for the church, where we go live in somewhere else (often a foreign country) where we do service and talk to people about our beliefs. It sounds kind of strange, I know, but it's really not as odd as it might seem at first.
So, I went to Korea. Learned the language, lived in little apartments in Seoul, generally had a blast. Good times.

I've been wanting to do some Mistborn fanart for a while, and finally today I was able to do a bit. This was initially just going to be a concept sketch, and then kind of exploded on to my computer and well...here we are! I colored it (quickly, mind you) and thought to put it up here. The style is a bit anime, and not so slightly chibi (for those of you who do not know, chibi is basically referring to the proportions I did; big head and all that).
I was a little dissatisfied with how her outfit turned out; I didn't feel like I quite captured Vin, and for that I'm really sorry. Oh well - there's always next time! Hehe, it mostly takes practice. I've had a tablet for over six years, and I still don't have it right!
For coloring, I mostly use this coloring tutorial (http://elaine-sensei.deviantart.com/art/Elaine-s-Way-58328963), done by a good friend of mine. It's extremely helpful.
What tablet and program to you use, if I may ask?

I have a Gateway Tablet PC..convertible..yadda yadda. And I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS 3 (Because it's the only program I know how to use. Illustrator infuriates me, so I stay away from it)
So it's nice, I have the screen as my tablet etc etc, instead using the pad-like ones...I tried that once. It was not pretty.

One of the fun things about fanart is the possibility for interpretation. Don't apologize for your style! This is very well done, and I'm impressed. I tried my hand at art for a while, and I was downright terrible, so I know how hard it is to make things look as good as you have here.
Thanks for posting these, and make sure to show me anything else you do. The new website (which we're launching in beta on Monday) will eventually have a fanart section, and I'd love to post these pieces.

About the art: Don't apologize for your style; at least you have a style. Be proud that you have talent and never stop doing what you enjoy. To many people put down the brush, pencil, pen, or instrument as life's crushing stress and global mediocrity kills everything beautiful within us. It is sad how many people I meet or personally know say: I used to be a (guitar player, violinist, painter, writer, etc...), but I just don't do it anymore; there is no time blah, blah, blah.

Candylion, have you ever played with Corel Painter? I find it much better for getting a smooth drawing line than Photoshop (though it's also frustrating because there are just so many different brushes and I haven't spent enough time with it to know what they all do.) I have a question that relates to fan art, so I am posting it here. However, if there is a more appropriate place for it, feel free to locate it there.
Basically, when it comes to things like fan art, how do the legal aspects play into things?
For instance, what if someone wanted to make something using the symbols from Mistborn (Such as the Wallpaper Brandon posted http://www.brandonsanderson.com/graphics/Mistborn%20Wallpaper%20One%201028.jpg) or Elantris, what are the limits?
What are the restrictions there? I would assume that if someone draws a picture of what they think Vin looks like, then it's fine. What about if they include the words "Mistborn" or some of the symbols from Mistborn or Elantris or something in their art?
I'd imagine that you couldn't make something like that to sell, but what if you made a wallpaper to distribute on the net? What about hiring another artist to help make something for you. Like if you do an ink drawing using something, can you pay someone to color it? What about the other way around?
I'd imagine that there are (hopefully) not many legal problems that arise from fan art, but am interested in the rules anyway.

my understanding is as long as it's not for profit there's nothing legally someone could do even if they didn't like people making fan-art, it's fair use, however as soon as you sell that art you could be liable for infringement.

The answer is: It depends. First off, you have to find out if the thing you are recreating is trademarked (like Mickey Mouse) or not. Most fiction like mine is copyrighted, but the characters are not trademarked.
The second question is this: Are you creating your own work based on the original work, or are you simply copy and pasting? For instance, if you're creating a wallpaper are you copying copyrighted images directly, or are you drawing your interpretation of ideas, themes, and people in the books? The former infringes, the second is in a large gray area.
You see, US Copyright laws protect 'Derivative works.' One common form of the derivative work is a collage. Artists have been upheld in their right to take a bunch of clippings from a magazine, cut them apart, make a collage of pieces, then sell that as a new piece of artwork. Many people argue that drawing a new work based on your concept of a character is a derivative work, and is protected.
Question three: How similar IS your artwork? If it's inspired by the book, and you're not using any actual copyrighted images, you're in a probable safe zone. For instance, people who sell T-Shirts with things that look a lot like heart containers from the Zelda games. Link himself is trademarked, but a heart...a heart can't be trademarked. Who's to say those heart containers are even from the Zelda games? The people selling the T-Shirts can hide behind the fact that the shirts don't HAVE to be linked to the games. (Even though everyone buying them knows exactly what they relate to.)
Question Four: (and this one is probably the most important) What are your intentions? As has been mentioned, if you're not seeking to make any money off of the artwork and you're not at risk of diluting or defaming the actual copyrighted work, then it's likely nobody will care. It would be stupid of companies to chase down people who make wallpapers based on their properties, since those wallpapers act as free publicity, and the people making them aren't trying to earn money off of them. If you were selling posters of that image, you might draw attention--but, then, for reasons argued above you could have a strong argument on your side. (Assuming you wanted to pay the legal fees to fight the person trying to stop you.)
Question five: What does the author/creator think? Some people fight fanfiction (and to a lesser extent) fanart because they feel it dilutes their property too much. Me, I'm flattered, and have no object to fanart. Fanfiction is more sticky, since authors risk getting sued over their own books with fanfiction. I've written an explanation on the Warbreaker rights page.

So that prompts me to ask this: Can someone (say on dev-art) who got commissioned to do a fan-art piece for a book or something get in trouble? They got paid to do what someone else requested, and the request was fan art? Would that mostly be up to the original creator (author/artist/whatever)?

Most likely, it's okay. There's a CHANCE they might go after you, but only if they're a large corporation (Disney) who is militant about protecting their brands.
However, chances are good that in such a lawsuit if you were able to fight (i.e. you had the money and the desire) you would win unless you were using a distinctly trademarked character. Example: I've seen people selling sketches they did from the Lord of the Rings movies. This is protected by law, since watching a movie and sketching the people in it is considered creating a derivative work which does not compete with the movie itself. However, creating a drawing of Mickey Mouse and selling it could be argued another way, since you're copying a distinctly trademarked character who is already animated.
However, I'm not the expert on this, and I'm not really intending to give legal advice or anything like that. This is just the way I understand it, though I have looked into the matter a little bit, so I know more than the common person.

I'm not sure if I should start a whole new thread for this, so I'll just post descriptions here for now. They're straight from MB1.
Kelsier - tall, hawk-faced, light blond hair, mid-thirties, nobleman's suit (colored vest, dark coat and trousers, thin cloak to keep off ash)
Dockson - shorter than Kelsier, squarish face, stocky build, black hair, short half-beard, nobleman's suit
Breeze - sharply dressed as a nobleman, hat and dueling cane, older, a pit portly, well-styled black hair
Ham - build of a soldier, sleeveless shirt, well sculpted arms, muscular but not massive, close-cropped hair
Clubs - Dull tan overcoat, pair of brown trousers, simple white shirt, face knotted and gnarled, eyes show with disapproving satisfaction
Yeden - short with curly brown hair, gray skaa clothes, worker's coat
That's what I have so far. Feel free to add and improve the list!

You're not the only one. I had in my head that Kelsier had brown hair up until I re-read it. But it's right there, page 49 in the PB version, right when Kelsier saves Vin from Camon's beating.

Added some rough shading, knives, and coloration. The darkness is a problem, and I'm trying to figure out a way to highlight the MistCloak, with out turning it stark red. Ash in the background needs improvement too.

I think it's the hood along with the sleeves and the way the shirt sleeves look poking out.
And (everyone can correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think cloaks have "sleeves" per say. Usually if it does have sleeves it's then a robe. Cloaks are just capes with a hood on them. Sometimes they have slits for your arms to go through, but that's about it.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with artistic licences. I think looking at it again it's the way the sleeves of the shirt coming out of the robe that make it look Jedi-ish. And the coloring.

I thought that the mist-cloaks were silvery white... To blend into the mist. (I haven't read Mistborn 2 yet, perhaps brown ones come in later)

I really like all this fan art, it's all amazing! The Kelsier blond thing through me for a loop, all of a sudden I realized that I was picturing everyone but ham with black hair, and I was all, that's odd, they all have black hair, then I realized Kelsier and Marsh have blond hair, and Yeden isn't completel bald, like he was in my head, it's funny how you ened up picturing things even if they aren't what you are told they look like.

I love looking at fanart. It always helps the character more real to have something to look at instead of what is just in your head. I wish I could draw like you people but its not one of my talents.Keep up the great work.
On a side note does any one know when Mr.Sanderson served in korea because my brother was there in 93-95 and went back to teach english .He met his wife there too.

Anubis, please don't react like this. They are only presenting their own interpretation and I don't see that they are against yours in no way. If you cannot take a little comment and you feel attack in your hability, maybe you should revise your judgment. Maybe You are not able to accept their interpretation.
In all cases, without any criticism, here is Brandon's description and that should conclude all interpretation.
Like all Inquisitors, he wore intricate eye tatoos - mostly black, with one stark red line - that marked him as a high-ranking member of the Canton of Inquisition.
So, I guess colors indicate from which Canton your Inquisitor is. Black and red for the Canton of Inquisition... maybe red for the Canton of Finance or blue for the Canton of History. ;D

Ummm.. man no one is saying that it looks "Bad". It looks good but there really is no need for such a reaction. quite childish if i do say so myself. When you post any sort of artistic thing online your ganna get comments and a thing called "Constructive Critisism". Reacting posotivley can result in even better work your next attempt. But if you take it negativley ppl are not ganna want to help u with tips and pointers anymore cuz ur just ganna throw it in their face again. criticism one of the core things that makes artists.
All in all, good picture 8) interesting view though. It does look menacing in its own way but yeah I think warmer colors would give it more of a sinister look. like the white eye. and I just realized that is a downloaded brush. smart :P i'd also suggest looking at the source material before starting the project next time too :P

I'm a big fan of the Mistborn books, and I love a lot of Sanderson's design descriptions enough to the point where they drive me to fanart. I hope this is the right thread for posting them (I've only skimmed the 13 pages of the thread so far, not read in detail, but if this thread is only for the OP's art just let me know. I don't want to be a threadjacker).

And feel free to crit as much as you please... I draw for a living, so I'm no stranger to it, and my skin is super-tough.
This is just a random Vin moment, from no place in particular in the books. I did want to try and get her design as close to Brandon's descriptions as I could, but I confess to relying on my unreliable memory for most of the details (aside from the mistcloak, which I actually looked up. Page 90 of the paperback edition describes it as being "made of hundreds of long, ribbon-like strips [...] sewn together at the chest and shoulders, but mostly they hung separate from one another, like overlapping streamers"). Her daggers are glass, her coinpouch is tied in such a way as to release from the belt if Pulled upon, and she wears trousers and a shirt and goes barefoot. I even put a couple tiny vials for metals (but I think I made up the gloves). Her hair is black, her build petite.
I think I got it all right, but it seems like this is the place to find out. Let me know what you think!

As per the drawing of Vin, I noticed a few things. 1 - As far as I have come to notice there is no Ashfall at night, it is never mentioned in the book, and I believe many people on here have discussed the fact that it doesn't come at night. 2 - I know she is a Mistborn, but look at where her center of gravity would be. . . her positioning is quite odd in this picture and that makes it very hard to be believable. 3 - I know drawing in this style is very hard, and I was never very good at it, but why is her cloak black?
I would give it a 9/10 though, it is very well drawn, if it hadn't been for the inconsistencies I would have given it a 10. (I'm sorry, I'm very critical.)
As per the Steel Inquisitor. I don't actually remember if there was a description of their robes, but I've always imagined them differently. Now however, I don't think I'll be able to imagine them in any way other than the way you have embodied them. Excellent work. The only thing that I found odd is the huge cuffs on the gloves. I mean it looks amazing, but not sure I buy into that, but it is possible.

wow ink that is really good, the folds on her clothes are nice plus i really like the gargoyle on the side of one of the buildings. Also that inquisitor is completely beast!!! i love the pose, cape, face expression, arms...also the symbol (is it steel?) he is wearing is cool.

I hadn't noticed, actually... but I counter with mists now coming during the day. It's weak, but I'll go with it. :D
Mostly I just wanted to include both ash and mist in the same drawing. All things considered, I wonder if mist would stretch up to the point that it obscures all but the uppermost towers of Luthadel anyhow. I can't recall if Sanderson ever said one way or another.

Ahhhhh... she's in mid-movement, just stepping but not standing on the spire? Nah... I got nothin'. Mea maxima culpa. I went through a couple roughs with Vin standing in different ways, but decided on this because I liked the sense of motion.

Ah, now this one I have a good answer for: because silhouettes are easier to deal with in B&W than hatch or pure contour. You can hide a world of sin in a silhouette, and part of my exercises in general lately involve seeing what I can do with solids rather than contours.

Thanks! The glove cuff honestly doesn't make much sense, except to make him look bulkier and heavier than ever. I originally had the wrist and bicep cuffs engraved with Allomantic symbols (like the symbol for "Steel" on his belt) but then realized that A)Inquisitors use Hemalurgy, not Allomancy and 2)wouldn't be smart to have big metal bracers on when fighting Allomancers.
On a second round (presuming I do another, which is almost certain since there's a new book coming out and I expect LOTS of Steel Inquisitors in it) I'll probably try something different with the costume. But the heads, the nails, the build... I'm happy with that, and I'll run with it until the canon tells me different.

All in all I like your art and your concepts though. Impressing me is a hard thing to do when it comes to art. Ask my grandmother, she stopped taking me art shows.
The only thing I have to respond to is the (3) and I guess that it works. It just confused me at first. Ha Ha.

Your drawings are the first on this thread to inspire me to comment. I really like what you've done!
I actually like Vin's off-balance pose - like you said, it gives a sense of motion, and of the pewter-enhanced balance of a Mistborn. Plus she's probably using Steelpushes and Ironpulls to stay up there.
At first I thought the city was flooded - I guess that's your depiction of the mists? It looks like you see them as a fog, which settles low to the ground but can be surmounted; I was more under the impression that they continued up indefinitely into the sky and Mistborn were simply able to see through them.
I like Vin's appearance a lot, especially the way you've blended her hair with her mistcloak. I also like the details of daggers and vials and coinpouch. My one objection is that she strikes me as too curvy. I pictured her having a more boyish figure.
The Inquisitors are perfect - scary while still more human than some of the outlandish monsters I've seen drawn. I'm very glad you didn't draw their mouths open in a fanged snarl. I've always pictured them as being the quiet, controlled, sinister kind of terrifying (like Myrdraal) instead of the rabid, feral kind of terrifying (like Trollocs), and I think you've captured that well.

As for the Vin picture, I have always loved that style (although I am terrible at doing solid light and shadow) and this makes me love it more! The outline of her face is amazingly well done, I love the expression. I also like her pose; it's perhaps my favorite part of the picture, because it captures a bit of her motion, almost falling (though we know she would control that), and then you have to scroll down to see the rest of the picture, emphasizing the movement, at least for me. :3
You did the clothing folds wonderfully, and I like how the ash reminds me of black snow, reminding me of its own eerie qualities.
I really hope you do more! ;)

Inkthinker, these are some of my favorite Mistborn renderings ever. I don't mind the off-center pose of Vin. As someone said, she is pushing and pulling on metal and maybe she's about to do a backflip or something. I love the Inquisitors too. The roughness of the sketch lends even more menace to them. I'd love to see more of your inkthinking. ;)

Sorry to sound redundant Inkthinker, but I love your picture of Vin, especially the pose, it looks almost casual, the way she's about to swing her back foot around and take off into the sky, and I agree with Sarah, I think the mist does reach into the sky, but cool effect nonetheless. When I first saw it I thought it was during the day, I love the ashfalls by the way, they are just great, just great!
If your taking requests... do one of Kelsier, we don't get nearly enough of him! Or the lord ruler, I'd be very interested to see your interpretation of him!
Keep them coming though, they are simply astoundingly amazing!!!!
Oh, and by Vin's hair length, I'd say this is later in the books, perhaps even book 2, and she'd be more mature, and have a less boyish figure by then I think, doesn't it say that in the books.
Anyways, you have some serious skill Inkthinker!

This is probably the beast thread ive ever had the time to read all the way through. its kinda humbling to find the people we look up to for their ability to creat these types of images and writing, conversing from the same level. I find it funny to think that all these artists are on this forum because of how much they like Mr. Sandersons work but as you have probably noticed if you have read this thread, its fairly obviouse that he has become a fan of their art. The ability to watch follow and read these people with great talent at what they do talk to one another about thier skills and what they love is actualy very refreshing. im very new to this whole forum thing this is the first time ive joined one on subject matter so i find this thread alone to be the biggest reason to become a more involved member.

I was so inspired by InkThinker's pieces that I wanted to add something to this thread myself. I've been drawing in pencil for years but I've never made the jump to color before. I recently lucked into a rather large Wacom Tablet and I ended up wanting to try that out too. So here's a Koloss painted in Photoshop with my new tablet. Please feel free to critique as much as you like. I don't draw or paint for a living but I've been taking feedback on creative works for years.

Your biggest problem I would have to say is proportions. Like, nothing matches up. Also, I know you haven't done color before, but your texturing could use a lot of work as well. If those two things could be fixed, I think you would do a great job.

Proportions: I deliberately made him chunkier and with longer thicker arms than a human would have. Are you saying he doesn't look human or that his proportions aren't internally consistent?
Texturing: Yeah. Any suggestions? Not even sure how to start working on that one...

i think you captured the idea of a kolos very well. i agree that the proportions should intentionallt be altered than those of a human. texture would be nice for accuracy but it isnt neccessary in this case. the only thing that i would maybe attempt would be more detail on the face. in the book these streaches and rips were very prominent on the face making it look less human. but if you were going for a young kolos i think you did a great job and i look forward to more work

His left leg also looks longer than his right leg, though I suspect this is an optical illusion due to the lack of depth: His left knee is supposed to be bent toward the viewer, but the shading doesn't do enough to help give this impression.

Yes, this is what I was talking about with the proportions. Also, the right hand looks a lot longer than the left one.
The blue color is OK. I had pictured them about that color.

yes i had pictured them much lighter blue than that, i think the darkness of the blue is keeping us from seeing some of the shading details on his skin. However the musculature is very cool, i love the pose as well.

The nice thing about working digital is that if that turns out to be the case... I can fix it. :D
All I recalled was that the skin was "blue", but I didn't recall what shade. I decided to go with a pale blue to help bring out the features, but it's only a matter of some slider adjustments and a little touch-up to change the color entirely.

So that'll teach me to do my reading.
Looks like I also messed up the scale reference, in that an immature koloss should be closer to 5-6 feet tall. Luckily all this stuff is easy enough to edit in the PSD, so I'll update the image with a corrected version later tonight, I think.

Edited version of the koloss is up now, folks. I've overwritten the older version, so as to not double-post the image.
I know (now) that the immature koloss come as small as 5', but to pull the smaller one down much further would end up pulling the lines in such a way so that it'd look reduced, like seeing a xerox copy placed in there. Rather than do that, I put him on the upper range of the smaller koloss. I also made their eyes a bit more of a burning orange, to reflect what Sazed sees as "eyes the color of the sun at dusk" (TWoA, p215). And there's some small changes to the text and the numbers were fixed to reflect the more proper sizes. I could stand to build the contrast in blues better, 'cause darker is harder to work with, but hey... it's 5AM and I just spent 13 hours drawing animation. Cut a brother some slack.

Actually reading the text (most of the descriptions run from pages 212-217 of the paperback edition), shows me a couple other things I might do better next time, such as making them a bit stockier at full growth and misshaping the facial features more to reflect the stretched "sack of skin" effect. I would probably also do a bit more with the sword-and-coinsack harness, such as it is... the koloss carry their weapons "...bound to their backs with leather straps. And tied to those straps [are] pouches" (TWoA. p216)
Brandon describes the pouches as being both "tied to their swords" and "tied to the straps", but if you have the coin pouches actually attached TO the sword, it leads to some practical issues. Just tying the sword to your back with straps also presents some functionality concerns, but there's any number of slipknot ties or other methods by which a character might tie or strap a sword while still making it easily drawn in short order. Figuring out little details like that is part of the fun, but for now I'm doing a more liberal version of "tied to the straps".

Plus, I'm still having fun. But don't worry... regular work is a-callin', so it might be a little while before I do another.
I do have this killer image of Vin fighting the koloss in my head still, though... I'll probably get that out at some point. And I'd like to draw a stronger image of the Steel Inquistors than I have so far.

I think all of the art here is extremely awesome. Having no artistic talent myself, I have to rely on others to get images down that make sense to me with a book, and you all have managed that on some level or another. Great art, really it is. :)

Okay, I'm not so good at drawing. So I decided to do something I can do... cosplay. This is my play off of the current (offical) cover.

It's supposed to be Siri (yes, I know she doesn't use breaths, and she never touches Nightblood, but I was working with the cover.) It's the dress she wears the first time she leaves the god king's palace.
Walking was probably a bad idea, considering her dress’s long train. She’d eventually chosen a gown far more daring than anything she’d ever worn before. The neckline was a touch low, and it had no sleeves. It also had a curious design that covered the front of her legs with a short skirt, yet was floor length back.

Ok so unless you want to listen to someone be picky then don't read the bad ones.
Dress(bad): There is so much more you could have done with it if you had been serious with it. To make modifications to fit what the canon would not have cost that much or taken that much time, and we would have been fairly simply. The dress needs to be more modest and have sleeves at LEAST. Also this dress style/fabric/color does NOT go well with your complexion or body.
Dress(good): Uhm. . . the train is a nice touch whereas it would have taken a LOT of work to make the dress heavy and flowing outward like canon. So you did well in that regard.
Jewelery(bad): Uhm. . basically just completely unnecessary and distracting. Something like the necklace would have been nice and the rings wouldn't be as bad if they were covered up with sleeves.
Sword(bad): It's the total wrong type of sword.
Sword(good): It's black. . . so whatevs, props for trying.
Positioning(bad): Your position sucks all out. You should have your legs turned at MUCH more of an angle especially considering the image you are trying to create and the style of the dress and the way it fits turning and leaning back more would have made a huge improvement. Leaning back would have helped a lot, but you would have to be angled more first.
Positioning(good): Your head is turned at a good angle, but the body throws it off.
Area(bad): The random shadows in back are distracting.
Area(good): A nice place for a picture like this.
Effects(bad): These were key to making or breaking. . . unfortunately you broke. The 'breath' is WAY too rigid and looks like a feather mixed into a twig. . . . TOTALLY not believable.
Text(bad): The color should be harsher and less pastel.
Text(good): Love the font and the extra 'W'.

Yeah, it was mostly just me having fun. I wasn't trying to actually match the cover at all... in fact, my whole idea behind the dress was to NOT match the one in the cover at all, but to match the one discribed in the book.

Wow Miyabi, you're pretty intent this art critiqueing thing, you should look into it for a career, I like your honesty as well. You have such a good eye for porportion and texture it just makes me wonder... are you and artist as well? If so, I'll be expecting some of your work up soon :).

I AM an artist actually. I got accepted to a private art institute a while back but I can't afford $144,000 a year for college. ha ha.
I will think of doing something. I do a lot more abstract stuff than actual character art, but I'll get something out. ha ha.
I am my own worst critic so like I HATE my stuff if it isn't perfect.
My grandma actually stopped taking me to art shows because I critiqued everything to harshly.

Thanks! I'll see what I can do, but for the time being I'm really busy and it's hard to say when I'll get around to doing anything else that's Mistborn-related. I'm sure I'll find incentive when the last book hits in a couple months, though.

Just draw Miyabi, and as for the perfection thing, did you ever hear the concept behind Turkish Rugs? Every Rug has a flaw in it, sometimes on purpose, because perfection is of the Divine, and thus making something perfect, is believed to be playing god.
So anyways, these mistakes are usually very small and well hidden, and that's why people are their own worst critics, because we know where to find all those mistakes.

holy crap dude that is awesome!!!!! :o :o I love the sense of motion in the cape and his clothes, the little flaps of cloth swinging in the wind. Actually the little strips and the cloak kinda reinforce the image of a Mistborn; a mistborn gone bad if you will. For some reason though he looks almost sci-fi ish. I'm not even sure why thats just the impression i got. But dude that is so awesome.

And honestly, I don't know if I care for the bare-chested look anyhow, so some sort of crossed robe/tunic or something seems like a good idea.
One thing I try not to do, unless directed to, is make a costume too plain or uniform. For instance, I would give most Steel Inquisitors the cloak, but I might change up their robes or other clothing elements in small ways... different accessories, maybe the occasional tattoo outside of the Inquisition tatts around the eyes, that sort of thing. So maybe one Inquisitor would go around shirtless showing off his nails, while another would wear a full tunic. Even amongst uniformed groups like police or military personnel, there's usually minor variations.

Sure, I don't mind, I generally size them so that they work for that. I suggest making your desktop's background color either black or white (whichever looks better to you) and setting the image to "Center", which is what I usually do.
I wouldn't say anyone else's work in this thread is disappointing... I do this for a living, 8 hours or more a day, every day of the year, so I have an unfair advantage in the realm of illustration. I love my work, but if anything I think the other artists in this thread love their work more... they're not doing it so much that it becomes old hat, and they show more dedication and guts when putting their work in front of the world at large than I do.
If you love something enough to draw it, especially when you're not a professional artist, then I want you to pick up the pen and give it your best shot more than ever.

Inkthinker, I agree with that view completely. (Up to a point.) While I'm not a professional artist by any means, I do spend a fair amount of time around them, and I always find it touching when a new or aspiring artist submits their work for review. But on the other hand, when a professional artist utilizes their talent and ability to work on something they love, it's definitely inspiring and motivating.
I think the key component is artists (Or people in general.) doing something they love. It doesn't matter if you're a professional or an amateur, if you put your heart into something people will respect you for it.

I have only skimmed the start of mistborn so I might be wrong but I thought the sun was red because of the ash in the air. Think Japan the sun is red because it is diffused by the smoke or fog in the air giving it a red appearance, this doesnt actually change the look of the environment, that said though your image looks so cool I wouldnt change it.
I'm a 3D guy myself, I just started reading warbreaker and will probably read that before I get into Mistborn properly. I was thinking of doing a cover image for it. So stay tuned folks

The reason the sun on many Japanese articles is red is because it is "the land of the rising sun" when the sun is rising it can look red no matter where you are.

I wish people would stop drawing Inquisitors with their mouths open and teeth bared. I mean, it has been suggested that they are cannibals who draw their strength from other people's flesh, but until this idea is proven, I don't see why they're always pictured like ravening beasts.

Probably because if someone is making that picture as a portrait, there is no real "action". I happen to like pictures of heroes and villains with teeth barred, ready for something to happen. That is just my personal observation.

I guess I'd say, if you want action, do the whole body in an action scene. Portraits are like still life - they're not supposed to be active. Anyway, I don't picture heros or villains going into battle looking like they're trying to bite each other.
I picture Inquisitors as being more sinister in a quiet, controlled way that makes you shudder when you look at them. I don't think they go into battle yelling and screaming; they just casually deal with the opponent while maintaining their composure. They're like Myrdraal, completely terrifying because of their enormous power which everyone knows is hidden beneath their calm exterior. I picture Inquisitors pretty much the way Inkthinker portrays them (replies #183, 238, 243, 244 in this thread).
Koloss, on the other hand, are more like Trollocs; they're savage beasts with low intelligence, a low degree of civilization, and very low controlability. They kill for the joy of killing with no planning or strategy or consideration of the consequences. You can draw their teeth all you want and I won't object.
Anyway, my opinion is by no means definitive, but there it is if you want it.

I think that, while they perpetually feel pain, they contain anger and emotions quite well. Their language never really sounds like they are extremely "enraged", they seem cool, collected, and all at the same time, ruthless.

Here's a picture of Vin I did. The dress is based on the blue one posted on page two, which I assume was the one meantioned at the last ball she attends. (I'm kinda' sad that some of the finer details can't be seen. But then again with some of it, maybe that's a good thing.)

My favorite one to use is www.imageshack.us (http://www.imageshack.us), because you aren't required to register and the images stay up forever, as long as you save the link to the image. But, if you do forget, you can always upload it again onto that site, because there is no limit.
Really, as long as you keep track of the URLs, that one is the best image hosting site, in my opinion.

I consider myself so in fact! It was actually an odd turn of fate that I did! I had meant to buy HoA the day it released. Though for this reason and that I kept putting it off or forgetting to get it altogether! Then I became so frustrated with myself I took a break from work and went to Barnes and Nobles to purchase it. On a random whim I asked the clerk if he was aware of Brandon doing any signings in the near future localy (that was infact how I was introduced to the Mistborn series orginally, by brandon himself! At a barnes and nobles here, he was doing a book signing and I just happened to go in randomly that not looking for anything specific and he pitched his book to me and I bought it on whim.) The clerk said they didn't have information like that though offered to check for me just incase. Turned out Brandon was doing a signing that very day several hourse later!! I was in shock and informed the clerk I would be returning at that time to buy the book from Brandon himself instead. That was a very good day! ^.^

I've done something that I'm guessing could be considered fan art. I have this thing where when I use a new wallpaper on my computer I try to make EVERYTHING match. (I change it so that's my background in MSN messenger. I also change my font on messenger to something that fits the feel.) Well, after reading HoA I of course put up a mb releated one, and created a cursor set to go with it.

Okay, so a few months ago I spent some time doing a render of The Lord Ruler in his throne room, but I got about this far before I ran into difficulties and put the project on hiatus. I'm thinking of starting it up again though, so I thought I'd post what I've got and get some feedback.

So, from here, I'm going to inlay some of the metal symbols all over the place. I need to rework those fires in the background, but for now they're just there to cast shadows. I plan on putting a headpiece in that weird little gap on the throne, and of course The Lord Ruler himself eventually. (And some big old caption-y text of something cool. Maybe "'Kill him,' God said, 'He's really not that important.'" from Zane in Mistborn:The Well of Ascension.)
But for now what I'd really like feedback on is the glass wall. Does that look believable to you guys? Is it easily recognizable and such? If I don't get any feedback on that, I think I'll leave it just the way it is, but I'd like to know if it fits as well for everyone else as it does for me.

I would like to stress that it is no where near done, that was just some line art I whipped out in the half hour before I passed out last night, note the time I posted haha. I will clean up the art and add her *pause for suspense* FOOT! Actually the idea I had in my head was for her being in a standoff with an inquisitor, though I think this specific picture is turning into more of just a still of her. I like her expression in this one, and I can't bring myself to distort it to one of anger or contention. I will post the pictures I have done as soon as I clean them up. I have some of Sazed, some Kandra and Koloss, and an Inquisitor. Thanks all!

The way I picture her is short as well, at least comparatively to those around her. In this picture there is not a point of reference yet to really depict her size. Though I always remember her being depicted as slim, I will find my notes again on her discription. The reason I put her clothes the way they are is based on descriptions from the books. Stating she liked to wear a loose shirt of the men's fashion left a little open by way of a few buttons not done up. Remember she did fight once in her underwear ~.^, Thank you for your comment! Hopefully once the picture is done how I see her will be more evident. ^.^

Yes, but to fight in one's underwear one must be wearing underwear (top included). Also, if she's short, the proportions would be shorter, unless her head is really small. :)

I host mine on imageshack.us once it is uploaded to your account (wich is free) you copy a line of code that it gives you while looking at your picture. When you come to these forums just paste that code on the forum post and the image should show up on the post.

Also, i like how you remembered to shorten her hair...
Though she does seem a bit masculine for a girl--and the facial expresion is puzzling. I would think that if she were battling (which i assume from the coin she holds) she'd have a rough look about her--something that would look like she's thinking, "Ok, its just you and me now,"
But overall, its very good--much better than anything i could ever produce! Bravo!

Okay, so a few months ago I spent some time doing a render of The Lord Ruler in his throne room, but I got about this far before I ran into difficulties and put the project on hiatus. I'm thinking of starting it up again though, so I thought I'd post what I've got and get some feedback.

So, from here, I'm going to inlay some of the metal symbols all over the place. I need to rework those fires in the background, but for now they're just there to cast shadows. I plan on putting a headpiece in that weird little gap on the throne, and of course The Lord Ruler himself eventually. (And some big old caption-y text of something cool. Maybe "'Kill him,' God said, 'He's really not that important.'" from Zane in Mistborn:The Well of Ascension.)
But for now what I'd really like feedback on is the glass wall. Does that look believable to you guys? Is it easily recognizable and such? If I don't get any feedback on that, I think I'll leave it just the way it is, but I'd like to know if it fits as well for everyone else as it does for me.
Anyways, thanks for any input you guys have.

I just finished Hero of Ages and am still overwhelmed.
I got inspired to paint my own take on Vin attending her first ball at Keep Venture. It turned out a little flat, and I'm not totally happy with the design of the dress. But I figured I should post it and move on rather than noodle it forever.

The biggest problem I've ever had with the mistcloak was how in the heck does it sit on your shoulders without sliding around? The way he describes it is pretty basic. When I made one I had to make a little bodice part with sleeves to attach the ribbons to. But your neat little design there gives me ideas... Makes me want to try something more authentic.

I agree with WickedNess -- you've got a nice design there that's given me some ideas. I've been playing with the mistcloak design too, but visualizing how hundreds of ribbons come together into something wearable has been tough.

The Final Empire describes the cloak as "...hundreds of long, ribbonlike strips. They were sewn together at the shoulders and across the chest..." (pg 86)
Karina's depiction, I think, is pretty close to acurate, in my mind anyway (maybe move the sewn chest line down a bit, but the issue there is getting in the way of the arms' freedom of movement, which is vital; having the sewn chest line in a V solves that problem). The ribbons are sewn together at the shoulder, would hang down, and sewn again at the chest to anchor it so it wouldn't slide around. But like I've said before, the actual process of sewing it authentically would require it being completely hand-sewn, which is a pain. But I'm tempted to try just to see how it would turn out. I've tried it before (http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=4487.45), but did shortcuts to get around the difficult/time-consuming aspects that creating an authentic one would have. I think I have a better image in my mind now, since I've made one before, about how an authentic one would be made. At least, how I would do it to the description in the book. The only problem now is finding the right charcoal-colored, cotton-like fabric, which, as most any sewer knows, is hard to come by.

The real trick, I think, to making one work would be to, in my opinion, make a cloak which looks cool on its own. Then, slit the bottom 2/3rds up to about the rib-cage area. Sew these into tassels, then sew some more tassels to the inside. Then, perhaps work with the shoulders/inner layers to make the cloak fall down so that it looks enveloping and the sides can fall straight.

I have to say that I don't really go to the main page all that often. I spend most of my time in the forums. I understand that it may be easier to navigate but the way the conversation goes in this thread it would be sad to see it go.

I personally love having this thread, however, I do understand how a long and involved thread such as this can be a pain in the hind parts to navigate. I visit more than one forum that refuses to restart an extremely long thread for the sake of readability. I'm not sure how we should go about that here though, whether we make a new one, or petition Sprig for a front page place to look at works with a link to discussion for them, such as this. Or if something like that would even work....I'm not very computer savvy. But, whatever decides to be done with it, I will seek it out and look at it, as this is one of my favorite places to browse. :)

Yeah. I'm talking the dresses discussed in WoA and HoA. The ones that are slightly different from the standard dress like the one she drew at the beginning.
Also, here's a couple of pictures of the costume I made for the HoA release party. I finally found my phone-t0-computer connector cord, so I was able to get them. (I can't wait for the better quality (read: taken with a real camera) pictures. But someone else took those. *shrug*) I wore this both to the release, and for halloween. (And even though I live in Provo/Orem no one reconized me. It made me kind of sad.)

And I kind of did but I didn't. They're actually five buck plastic ones that I bought at wal-mart, spray painted black (they were originally this silver and black) and then I glued the leather straps on like the night before the release party. (And they were still sticky the next day. Made for some fun reactions when people touched them.)

I've done something that I'm guessing could be considered fan art. I have this thing where when I use a new wallpaper on my computer I try to make EVERYTHING match. (I change it so that's my background in MSN messenger. I also change my font on messenger to something that fits the feel.) Well, after reading HoA I of course put up a mb releated one, and created a cursor set to go with it.

My problem is that I didn't bring any of my books with me here to Korea. So I'm stuck without descriptions. SO as soon as I get a hold of some copies (and the fact that I haven't read HoA yet) I'll definitely start hardcore on some fanart I've been dying to do.
Heck, I might just turn it into this gi-normous project not knowing what I'm going to end up with. If anyone could help me out with character descriptions, or commissions of what you want to see (with descriptions) I'd be really really thankful.

I started doodling a picture of Vin and the painting kind of took a life of its own and ended up being a quick painting of Kelsier. I couldn't get his face looking the way I pictured it in my head. Grrrr. Noodling it more just made it worse. So I'm posting the last version that still holds together ok. I do like the way the mistcloak turned out.

Wow, thanks for all the kind words! I hope to find more time to paint this week, but work is getting pretty crazy (the speedpainting may have to get speedier). I'm thinking about doing another character piece, just to take another crack at drawing a face. I'm still disappointed at how Kelsier's likeness worked out, so I've been picking my work apart trying to figure out what to do differently on the next character.

BTW, if you're having trouble drawing Kels face, perhaps painting him from behind, looking over the wall of Luthadel would do. I have a really bad sketch of one of my characters from behind and I think it looks pretty cool. (He doesn't have a Mistcloak, though...)

I enjoy seeing everyone's art, costumes, tattoos -- you name it. We've all been inspired by the characters, settings, and stories enough to want to create something. I think it's really cool to see all the different ways to express ourselves.
Ok. Here's a painting of Vin that I knocked out in a couple of hours. Actually I probably spent more like 10 hours total, but I scrapped almost the entire thing because it was getting overworked and Vin was starting to look too old and too much like a man. Sigh. Sometimes paintings can get away from me and I get lost in the details instead of looking at the overall image.
Anyway, so I basically started over after lunch today and laid down a much stronger foundation. In order to save some time, I cheated and re-used my Luthadel painting for the background. This originally started as a picture of Vin in her white gown from the ball at Keep Lekal from the first book. I originally had a simple colored background, but then I decided to put her high above the city to make it a little more dramatic.

Unfortunately Ashley's eyebrows are a bit bigger and she tends to smile a heck of a lot so its hard to get a good comparitive. Here is one of my more favorites that I did find. The angle is just about right too.

Shadowkiller - you are right. There is definitely a resemblance to that picture of Ashley Judd. Now that the association is in my head it will probably stick. I wouldn't be surprised if I think of a grown up Vin every time I see Ashley Judd from now on. ;D

Holy wow, these drawings are all incredible, I wish I had that much skill. Maybe I misread the book because I've always imagined the Steel Inquisitor's eye spikes to be about a foot or two long, not just the size of their head.

Now that you mention it, I can also see a resemblance to Ashley Judd. How funny! It wasn't intentional. While painting, I was actually looking at some reference of Natalie Portman from The Professional, and trying not to make Vin quite so young. I'm still learning how to draw a good likeness. I'm not there yet, obviously! :)

Done in Manga Studio (because it's pressure sensitive), and then copied into Photoshop and roughly shaded.
I KNOW this isn't what she wears and I KNOW she might look too old or what not.
And I...don't...care.
Because I was going for the feeling of half-falling, half-drunk, and half-giving up.
That's right, three halves.

Whoa, amazing work everyone. I swear I feel like I am among professional artists. I love all the different styles that have been laced into this thread. The different interpretations of all the characters (and creatures) are fantastic. I can't wait to see more work from everyone.
I am no professional in the arts or even qualified to be a critic but I think all of the art that has been posted are truly stunning. Compared to my sketches--actually, I don't even think I can call them sketches after seeing these pieces--these illustartions are works of DiVinci!
Anyway, if you can't tell, I am currently the newest addition to the ever-expanding fandom of Brandon Sanderson's work. I have just finished reading HoA and am about to start Warbreaker.

I hope to get some art posted soon (once my scanner works), but I can't promise anything amazing, stunning or as such (Amateur artist here, I am more of a writer than an illustrator anyway). I have already done some work (single Koloss headshot, Kredik Shaw, and an unidentified mistborn--more of a spontaneous-pick-up-the-pen-moment), and I have more ideas and sketch outlines drawing themselves in my head till I can get them out on paper. I have been thinking of a Spook (Lestibournes) sketch, *SPOILERS*maybe him fighting the Citizen's guards or jumping out of the building? *END OF SPOILERS* (Haven't seen any sketches of him) Or maybe an interpretation of what a Terrisman looks like, or Vin fighting an/the Inquisitor(s), see? Lots of ideas.

This is actually the first time I have used this particular non de plume (I was recently inspired to use it by some lyrics I heard, so credit to the music artist)

wow, nice! Great poses and great lighting, especially on the koloss musculature! That Inquisitor is intense!
However, I kinda feel like some of the textures could use a bit more...texture. Especially the skin looks a bit flat in places, but still its amazing.

Looks awesome, Skar! I'm not too sure about the lower-left corner's depth of field, though. The koloss's head is in front of the inq but his shoulder is behind his feet? The legs look like they might be at an odd angle to create that effect but I'm not sure it's working. His top half is uniform in the way it faces and that part of him doesn't look like he's twisting.

I don't know about everybody else, but my main issue is that on my machine at least, it's too dark. I mean, clearly we want a picture like this to be dark, but I had trouble making out what it was at first.
Of course, the internet being what it is, this may not be your fault.

Hi, Skar. Cool painting! The inquisitor creeps me out.
Here are a few texturing techniques that I use that you might also find useful.
- hard edged brush - use less opacity and multiple strokes to blend colors or for shading rather than using soft edged brushes
- some tighter highlights in key places might provide some contrast and make the skin feel more textured
- a grunge layer lightly applied using soft light or overlay blending modes can help get away from the computery feel of digital painting. I find that I tend to be too heavy handed with it.
- a spackle texture brush can be useful to add blemishes or other imperfections to the skin. also useful for pores or broken up highlights.

That is really impressive Skar; your use of dark colors is great! The only thing I would change (I know some of you already mentioned this . . .) is the texture, it would make it more real to me. Also is that the Ashmounts in the back? I like the surrounding background, very ominous. I, for one, can't use dark colors in my sketches since I get a feeling it's TOO dark, but you did excellent.

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't been able to participate in the community much lately, but I haven't forgotten you guys.
I was working on some stuff that involved using a skull illustration as a template, and I took a little time to do a couple extra heads based on my favorite blue beasties:

I think I didn't quite get 'em right the last time I drew 'em, but I'm taking a new tack. I think before I made the mistake of treating the immature koloss as appearing too "fat" rather than appearing like an abnormally muscular man in a sack of skin that doesn't quite fit, and isn't properly attached to the muscles underneath. Hopefully I've gotten a little closer this time, 'cause this is much creepier (I think).
As always, I enjoy any and all feedback.

Whoa, I was scanning the new posts and then BAM! I was terrified for a few seconds,(I am the type of person that will shy away from scary movies and rather see a happy-sing-along film) before I was able to recover and actually look at the koloss =D. Great job even though it freaked me out. (That's a compliment) since they are supposed to be scary. I love the rips and tears in the skin, very menacing and freaky. The eyes are awesome too.

Yep, Inkthinker, those sure are creepy! I looked at the line work, and I think the details read a little better there, especially the squished nose of the tight-skinned Koloss. Blue skin is always tough to do and make feel natural. I like what you've done, and the contrast with the muscles underneath is pretty cool.

The pic of the kollos on the other page looked kinda weird to me. I imagined the kollos with really tiny eyes but hey that's just my opinion. I like everyone's pics of Vin by the way, very realistic (except the one in the bathing suit :-\ bit awkward)

And quite frankly, if everything (especially art) that was created had to be up to 'everyone's standards'…the world would suck. All art would take on a general, common look. So without the different opinions, feelings and visions of different people, our culture would be almost…barbaric. (In the sense that art in our culture is virtually nonexistent.)

Inkthinker and Skar have inspired me to speedpaint a koloss. It turned out more icky than scary, I think. I was hoping to make it more threatening looking.
I applied some things I recently learned about color (from work and from the latest ImagineFX magazine). I think they prevented the image from feeling monochromatic and helped the blue skin really pop while still feel like it is being lit.

Dude, that's just cool. I love the way you managed to convey the feeling of saggy skin and wrinkles with simple, broad, suggestive brush-strokes.
It reminds of all those cool book covers from the 60s and 70s that my Dad had on the bookshelves when I was growing up.

I think you should make the eyes smaller to make the kollos look bigger but that's just my opinion. :)

The brush strokes and mix of coloring was really nice; it gave me an image of sagging skin. The eyes sinking down and the gums poking out of the mouth looked very cool. The sword was nicely done as well as everything else. Excellent job ;D

I've been looking forward to seeing a closer up shot like this since I first read about how their skin worked. This is awesome.
I'm curious about where the tears are most likely to occur on koloss bodies once their skin gets stretched too much... rather, where are the most obvious stress points besides the eye sockets and mouth?
On the subject of inquisitors, I'm in the "cold and ruthless" camp. I imagine them and obligators always doing everything very purposefully calmly, rarely rushing or moving quickly. I picture myrddral, nazgul, cenobites, and the antagonist... guys in Dark City. But with the poise and carriage of Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus in The Matrix movies.
...I guess I'm just telling you this because I wish I could produce art but can't and feel uncomfortable writing fanfic, even with the author's blessing. X3;;

The only suggestion I have is that maybe you could add a bit more texture/shading/color variation to the sky to make it seem a bit more real.

Ideally I would spend more time on my art. But I'm lucky if I get 5 hours of free time per week to paint. And if I have the time, sometimes I don't have the energy to focus. If I let myself, I think I could work on these for months and never finish. I've got a lot of other things that I want to make progress on, so I sacrifice some quality in order to do so. The artist in me cringes. The pragmatist in me says to keep moving forward and do better next time.

I don't see the windows as a problem. I mean in perspective they might be off in size but not if the window to the left was actually smaller. I mean who knows what some architect in that world would design. I do know that I've seen weirder designs in the real world. I agree with you on her pose, a little stiff but otherwise I think you have a really good painting there. I think that if you gave it more time and energy you would have worked out some of the issues that you found but with how much time you have available and the quality of the product you should be happy with the result. I would hang one of your paintings in my home anyday.

Very solid work for only 5 hours! I have paintings from class in high school that I spent literally 4 times that length of time on and they came out far, far worse (and sadly, this was before Mistborn or even Wheel of Time came into my life, so none of them came from those works).

You are right that if I spent some more time on the painting I could work out many of the issues. For now I'll be happy that I mostly captured the mood I was after.
Reaves: I don't mind the critique--I think you're right about the perspective and I also wish my Vin were better. Thanks for using constructive language. It helps me figure out how to improve.
Wolfstar: I've been practicing for a long time, so the speed has gradually developed. Plus I read lots of tutorials on speed painting and pick up tricks and tips. There was a stretch where I was playing an Amber RPG and my weekly contribution was a painting of either a character portrait or a scene from the game session. I think that more than anything taught me how to allot time to something and be forced to move on.
I think this painting ended up being about about 6 nights spread over 2 weeks where I got about 30 minutes in for the night. And then I got a 2 hour block to finish up on Sunday. Most of Sunday consisted of trying things and erasing them because they made the painting look worse than my original rough block in. Then I kind of rushed to the end and spewed out most of the foreground details like the windows and roof shingles. Believe me, after painting all those shingles and bricks, I was so ready to be done!

Nicely done MKing. I actually quite like Vin's "stiff" posture. Since she is not actually "flying" like Superman but rather channeling straight lines of force on which she pushes and pulls like a pole-vaulter or someone on stilts it makes a lot of sense to me that she'd maintain a pretty stiff posture much of the time, for control's sake.

That's pretty impressive, mking! Definitely keep it up!
Remember that one of the awesome advantages to digital work (I presume this is digital painting?) is that you can lay over corrections and sketch Layers to help yourself out when you run up against a difficult aspect. So for instance, when perspective is giving you a hassle, throw down a new Layer and put those VP guides on it, then turn off the guide Layers when you're done. Remember that your assistance Layers like VP guides and sketches are in no way restricted by the needs of final printing, so the lines can be in whatever color helps you best (I like blue and red myself).
And when you sketch, nobody needs to see it, so you can be as rough as you like. I often do what I call "scribbling with purpose", which is when I have an idea of what shape something should be, but rather than trying to get it right the first time I "zero in" by laying down as many line as it takes until I get the one that defines the contour I was looking for. That's the one I use when drawing the clean edge, but the others were just as important in finding it.
Other than that, my only crit would be that I imagine Luthadel with more towers and smokestacks (from the factories and canneries). I think of it as more Victorian than Medieval, but I don't have any particularly good excuse for that aside from the impression that stuck with me after I'd finished the novels.

Thanks, Inkthinker! I definitely used some layers with perspective guides to help. I rushed too much near the end, so I wasn't as careful as I could have been in making sure everything was lining up. I wrestled quite a bit with trying to stay loose and my tendency to start noodling on details before the whole piece is working.
I also imagine Luthadel as a Victorian city. I used reference pictures of London and from the Mary Poppins movie. I got tired of drawing chimneys, bricks, and roof tiles, so I skimped out on the rest of the city skyline. :-) I also wanted to have the big towers looming over all the rest of the buildings and make them stand out. So I tried to keep the rest of the skyline from feeling too cluttered.

Couple roughs for a Terris steward, based on Sazed in particular.

I try, as always to use the passages from the book as the basis. In my paperback edition (2nd MM, I believe) that I'm currently marking up with visual reference notes, Vin meets Sazed on pgs 154/155.
"Sazed had a long, flat face and a willowy body. He was even taller than Kelsier -tall enough to be a bit abnormal- and his arms were unusually long".
"His earlobes had been stretched out, and the ears themselves contained studs that ran around their perimeter. He wore the lavish, colorful robes of a Terris steward -the garments were made of embroidered, overlapping V shapes, alternating among the three colors of his master's house".
I'm punking out on the embroidery for the moment 'case this is a rough. Someone in the main forum reminded me that Sazed, at least, shaves his head. I'm fairly certain I remember references to sandals. I put a lot of metal on him, in the form of various bracelets, bands, torcs and rings. I think I might have made up the spectacles and the hood on the robes. Anything else I'm missing out on?

I seem to recall that the robes were studded with metal as well, which I don't see in your drawings. Also, I recall from reading an annotation that parts of Sazed's appearance, such as the unnaturally long limbs, are characteristics common to all eunuchs. So, keep that in mind when drawing terriswomen. ;)

I didn't do anything with upper arm bracers because the robes here conceal them. I didn't read anything in the passages I've marked so far about metal on his robes, but I'll keep an eye out for it. Of course, he changes outfits during the course of the story a few times.
There's racial characteristics and their fashion characteristics... long arms, stretched lobes and abnormal height are the racial characteristics common to all Terris (I think). Everything else is specific to being a steward and a Feruchemist.

So the "Terris people" is a term for an ethnic group, I guess. I don't know how I went three books without realizing that, I was generally under the impression that the Terris weren't "human", at least not baseline human.
So that's interesting... then Feruchemy isn't restricted only to Terrismen, then. I thought it was something only the Terris could do because they were fundamentally different from humans somehow.

I agree. I think you need more of the cohesive whole that was hinted at in the passage from the book…I would think moving would be a subject of much difficulty with that creature.

I noticed you have a wing there, but I'm not sure there are any birds at all on Scadrial. We never see any. The only times birds are mentioned it's part of a metaphor (stooped like a hawk, etc.).
Also a mistwraith wouldn't be able to change the size of the limbs it integrated. Your image implies that this world has giant insects.

Not nearly as blobby (still a little bit of flesh-sack action), still pretty chaotic but lifting it off the ground some helps.
Also dumped the bird wing (I'd forgotten that there are no birds on Scadrial) and the oversized insect-looking limbs in favor of more misshapen semi-mammalian bits. I also tried to detail up a bit the muscles and bones inside, since they're meant to be visible through the "smoky skin".
Thoughts? It's okay if it's still not working for you, but it's helpful to be specific. Do you think the hair looks right? Or should mistwraiths be hairless (figuring that it's both A)disgusting and 2)an advanced transformation technique more suitable to the kandra)?

Vin, from about the end of Book 02. I'm having some trouble determining what she would be wearing aside from the mistcloak. I found references to pockets so I assume she's wearing trousers, but I didn't find anything on footwear or shirts or otherwise. I'm really interested in finding out more of what Vin should be wearing during those climactic scenes.

Pair of koloss, one immature and one fully mature. I've gone over this design about three times now, so I think I'm about nailed on koloss, but I'm still up for thoughts if you spot something that's not clicking properly.

The sword is described as a wedge-shaped and several inches taller than she is. I took a bit of liberty in that I interpreted that to mean the blade, rather than the blade and the hilt combined.

I agree withMyabi. That's pretty much how I always envisioned Vin. The HUGE sword is sweet! Makes you really appreciate the raw strength of a Mistborn (or pewter arm).

The koloss remind me of the uruk-hai from the Lord of the Rings movies a bit.

I had some trouble thinking of designs for the swords that weren't reminiscent of the Uruk-Hai swords from the movies, but eventually decided that was more or less exactly what koloss swords did look like in my mind, only 10x larger. It's a barely forged chunk of pig iron with sharpened edges and something wrapped around the hilt. All one piece, no quillions or ricassos or fancy pommels, just as ugly and basic as you can get.
It's no fault of mine if the WETA people got there first. ;)

That's kind of what I thought at first, too (see the first draft of the illustration a page or so back up the chain), but based on the feedback here and a closer reading of the text, I realized that I was overdoing the blobby chaos, and I needed to emphasize the muscles and the fact that for all it's twisted blending of forms, the mistwraith is trying to form a functional body of mucles and bones.
So, nothing to speak of on Vin's (admittedly plain and undetailed) outfit? If Brandon didn't describe it too specifically anywhere in the text (and I haven't found anything so far) then I'm guessing it's a wide-open field within the aesthetics described so far, so I can't exactly be "wrong". Does anyone remember if she's wearing boots or going barefoot during the big battle at the end of book 02?

Sazed - awesome. I have nothing to suggest. In fact, I'd like to see a color rendition, if you find the time/interest to do so, just to see what your take on the color design on the robes would look like.
Mistwraith - Take 2 is better. I agree, maybe ditch the hair and cut down some of the skeletal stuffs (you've got a lot going on, which looks cool, I'm just not sure that's what the description was getting at). Also, and I can't back this up with any text, I kinda got the impression that their skin was transparent-ish and that the bones could be seen in their entirety. I'm probably just making that up, haha.
Vin - possibly the best Vin I've seen here, and there's some great competition. I love the oversized sword too, that's about how I imagined it from WoA.
Koloss - Freakin' scary dude. I love 'em. Yeah, I think you've got them pegged.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to do with the hair. Mistwraiths and kandra (I have learned) don't grow hair, but they can absorb it and reuse it. And I hate to dump the Sayoko head 'cause it's just creeepy, but I'm not allowed to override the text just to satisfy my own amusements.
I read the skin as translucent, but not transparent. So you can see some things close to the skin fairly clearly, and further in as just shadows. The palette and my own skills limit what I can do with that, at least in a quick rough, but I'm trying to remain conscious of it.
What were the colors of House Renoux or House Venture? Those would be the colors of his robes, I'm guessing, depending on where in the story you place him.

I don't really remember what the colors were in the book but I am guessing that color choices were rather limited. Their was not allot of things to make dyes out of with most of the plant life dead. I would say limited to mostly white, brown, black, and red. Not sure what you could use to make blues, greens, and yellows.

Maybe to create koloss, but hemalurgic spikes can be as small as a splinter of metal, as proven with Spook.

The spikes have to kill three people (one person per either spike or pair of spikes) and then get placed into a fourth. The unlucky person who ends up with all of them and survives has become a koloss.

Okay I looked it up and you can make green, yellow, red, and blue dyes from metal and acid. With the society being based on metal I would expect that they are proficient in mixing metals so could make dyes out of them. If the dyes are being made from metal I would expect only the rich to have them. Metal is far to important in the society for the poor to be using it for dyes.

The meh gradient and the world of sin below her knees that I hid with mist are the reasons I refer to it as "not quite finished". That BG definitely needs something, whether it's ashfall or silhouettes of buildings or enemies or something.
I think Miyabi has recognized something about the context, but I'd suggest keeping it a surprise until the limits of my ambition are certain. I thought that this figure stands well enough on its own so I dressed it up and spit-polished a few of the stains and Bob's your mother's brother.
Consider it, for the moment, an exclusive for the fans here on the board. I probably won't make even this fragment fully public (posting it all the other places I go) until I've done a bit more with it.

All in all it was amazingly well done though. I wish I could draw human figures that well. I draw them well enough that you can tell what they're supposed to look like, but that's about it.

As for this newer version, I seem to remember that not only was there ash falling, but snow as well. The section of the book with the siege in it is titled "Snow and Ash" for that reason: because the white and black of both snow and ash must have just clicked for Brandon as an image.

I think it's hilarious that you put "splatters" on her cheek, because she does have a scar there and that's what I thought it was. :) In fact, by the end of WoA she had a matching scar on the other cheek, courtesy of Zane.

Seriously, it makes grey snow or even black snow. You can't really have a mixture of black and white flakes, 'cause they mix up in the clouds.
Unless he actually describes a mix of the two in the text, (the author has the perogative to ignore physics as he pleases), I'm sticking with a mix of values in the ash for depth and the assumption that it's grey ash at best.
Plus, I've gone completely off the rails at this stage concerning any particular "scene". It's just a Vin pic now.

The text refers to her taking swords taller than she is, as long as she's burning pewter. He consistently refers to them as "swords", though he also makes it clear that they're big slabs of barely sharpened iron, not well-forged works of craftsmanship. I take what liberties I think I can get away with, but I try to stick to the text.

I would say definitely leave the eyes closed. Way cooler. Also, I think the ash flakes might be too big. They look a bit chunky to me. And personally I imagine the sky color to be a bit more chalky and the red less vivid and intense. Otherwise, its great!
Oh yeah, I think Vin should also be paler.

Not surprised the B&W is preferred, since that's the way it was created, but the bounce light has some benefits. I'm still torn on the issue of the eyes... my AD and editor instincts tell me that a character looking towards the viewer is more engaging than someone looking within, but then again I feel like the eyes closed makes her look gentler, which is a nice contrast to the giant sword and the bloodstains.
I'll think upon it. If I could poll votes I would.
The blue mist basically comes from the same trick I used for the Steel Inquisitor image I did a while back. The aqua blue is just the inverse of the red, which makes it the complimentary color. Also it makes the mist look spooOOOoooky, and keeps it from just being fog to someone who's looking at it for the first time and without context. You want someone who's never read the books to still recognize that the mist is special.
Brighter red blood against the bright red light on the blade would just end up being red on red on red. Since the light is already a pretty rich color, I'm afraid it would be overkill. I think I'll hold that as it is.
I agree that Vin should be paler, but the red light warms the skin. Her flat tone is somewhere closer to a pale cream. I'm not sure if I should try and compensate for that, since the resulting color is the natural blend of the red light against the pale skin.
As for chunky ash, I was hoping big dark flakes would read as "closer", since the flakes which overlap her set the scale. Is that not working?
Get your kicks in while you still can. After I post it to my public gallery I'll be loathe to mess with it again, in this particular form at least.

Very nicely done. The only thing I noticed was the ash fall. I think it is too big and blocky. It should look more like snow in my opinion. Some of the falling pieces look more like charred fabric falling then ash.

I'm with Oookla, she looks super fierce with eyes open. I think the eyes-closed version is truer to the character; she looks sad yet serene. She looks like she could break into tears or a smile or even a violent rage, and all three outcomes are equally likely. With the eyes open, the choice is made: violent rage it is.
I also agree with those who think the sky is too red. I think it would naturally tend more towards orange than bloody red. Living as I do in the West, I've seen (from all the wildfires we've had) what ash high up in the atmosphere does to the sun; it does turn red, but the sky does not. At sunset, things are redder than usual, but they're still more orange than not.
However, I'll dissent from popular opinion in that I like the colored version much better, too-red sky notwithstanding.

I think the only thing that makes the ash leveling not work super efficiently is that there isn't any ash in front of her. Try putting a little bit there and see what happens.

Hrrm...like I said, I definitely prefer closed-eyes Vin. As for color vs B&W, both have their pros and cons. I would go for color, just try changing a few things around and see what works. I absolutely love what you did with the mist at the bottom, it does have a slightly otherworldly quality. However, I think Vin's skin tone and the color of the sky can improve. If the blue is the complimentary of the red, obviously changing the red will change the blue, but I guess that can't be helped :(
The ash...I think if you want to give it the effect of being closer to the "camera" as it were, you will need to put flakes directly in front of Vin. Yes, that will mean some of the awesome detail you put into her will vanish, but as it is the ash doesn't have the same quality and effort put into it as the rest of the scene.
All that said...this is AWESOME! Would you mind putting up a link to your gallery? I'd love to see some more of your art :)

I disagree. I think the eyes closed reflects an internal battle–that she knows violence is necessary, but she is not content with it. And in her face/arms, I find almost the opposite of serenity. (I see what you mean from the colors, ash, glows, and slow-motion-type depiction, though.) Once again, the internal struggle and bloody/scarred arms/face displays (to me) the opposite of serenity.

Like you said its pretty rough and hard to tell what is going on. However I really like the idea you have for flaring! I think that for it to work the entire piece will have to be very exaggerated and and messy, almost like a comic book. For example it would be out of place in the piece you showed us before with Vin. But from the style above, it looks like you already knew that. Nice work!

Seeing his new artwork got me itching to do another Vin painting. Here's what I ended up with:

The flare sketch made we want to add a big glowy allomatic symbol to my latest Vin, but I restrained myself. I was also inspired to experiment with my color choices after seeing work by another artist on deviantArt. But then I chickened out and brought the colors back into my usual more restrained palette. If you look too closely, you might glimpse some of the more vibrant survivors. Maybe next time I'll feel more comfortable with the bolder colors.

Inkthinker, i really love the way you portray the flare in it! MKing, I think you should have added that allomantic symbol you were talking about. I've just seen way to many vins just leaping or "flying" I want to see some of them flaring pewter and about to kill something.

Oh absolutely! It's nice to see someone's idea of Vin when she's not in the middle of a fight. It's very peaceful, almost sad.

Um, yeah. I didn't have it originally, but I wanted to put in a little nod to how she started to like wearing dresses after a while. And without it her shirt reminded me too much of a modern tank top.

Nice work! I feel like her outfit is a little lacking in accessories, though. A belt, a coinpouch, glass daggers in sheathes, or the stud earring that ultimately serves as a major plot point would all fit.
The shape of her feet is a little off, too. Check it against an anatomy reference to see how the top of the foot leads from the ankle into the toes. It's an easy fix in paint, you just need to carve in a little.
I really like her face and her blouse. The wing motif of the mistcloak works with the composition, though her hair could be a little more tousled to reflect her motion (she seems to be hovering, right now).

I'm thinking you should use this as a study and do a 24x30 oil of the same image. That would give you the oportunity to do the refining you mention without retracing the same ground.

Alright, so I got bored and decided to make these. If you want to use them, please save them (no hotlinking, pretty please.) Also, if anyone asks, please give me credit. They might not be that good, but I did work hard on them.

Are those all from Sanderson books? I never realized that Brandon was such a quotable author.
I like those, but I think you might be trying too hard in the graphic design department. Keep it simple, minimize the use of different fonts, and don't allow the color schemes or textures to interfere with readability. Remember, the design is there to support the quote, not to steal the show.
You know, some of those would make pretty good T-shirts... I especially like numbers 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13 and 15. Put 'em in white text on a black shirt and I'd wear any one of 'em.

I have been working on a 3d version of Vin for a while its not complete yet still have a lot of things to fix (eyes, hair, hand etc) and I am doing a palace/fortress for the background but I thought I would share what I was up to. Shes actually just stuck on in photoshop and compositing work isnt my strong point. I want to try to get her in the scene but it keeps crashing my software. Shes also my first attempt at a woman so if she looks a bit old that would be why.

The keep in the background looks great, and you've managed to make Vin look more feminine than in your first post, but she still looks too masculine IMO. Fix that, fix the lighting, and and you'll have a fantastic piece on your hands (instead of one that's just "pretty good").

Well, I have to say I'm truely loving this stuff! Ink, your work is truely insipirational! You make me want to further develope my talent (not that it includes anyting digital, I'm totally lost there). I thank you for that since I had a serious slope in motivation for the last 6-8 months. I really love your first one of Vin. I think that one was my favorite. I just really like the feel of the whole thing.
Now I want to do some fanart, wich I have never really done, unless dragonball z woodburnings as gifts for my husband count. :D But unfortunately my brain hurts from looking at this screen for so long, but hopefully I'll get some stuff up here soon.

There are really gorgeous splendid artwork over here. My favorite being this fantastic portrait MKing did of Vin some pages ago. But I'm in awe in front of most of what InkThinker (got the name right?) does.
I did do a sketch of Vin I painted some months back, but I can't put my hands on it right now. It's not as extraordinary as some the art you can find here but still, it matched my idea of Vin so I guess it's quite enough. I find Brandon's stories very inspiring.

So here's Vin in her shirt and trousers before she got a Mistcloak , with a creepy Inquistor stalking her. I also decided to go with more of the amber colored night time from the ashfall, rather than the blue I had been using lately.

Should his eyes appear gold, though? Steel spikes would reflect the ambient color, with perhaps a touch of desaturated blue/grey, I think.
Also, I imagine Inquisitors as always being intimidatingly large (though I don't suppose they have to be).

I don't know why I had it in my head that the spikes were bronze-ish. I didn't have my books with me to reference, so I just went with it.

I think maybe it's just that they're always "intimidating", and I tend to automatically associate that with being big.
And given that Feruchemy allows a man to bulk up using stored strength, and Hemalurgy steals power in a way similar to the way Feruchemy stores it (am I right about that?), it made sense to me that even if you were the proverbial 98-pound sand-spitting weakboy, being spiked could bulk you up better than a year of steroid smoothies.

I'd suggest removing the blood spatter. It's a harder effect to achieve in pixel art, and here it looks more like a head wound than something splashed and wiped away. You might also want to trim down the single hairs some so that you've got a tighter form (and it'll bring in the pixel width a little).
Other n' that, it's pretty sweet. Might make a nice forum avatar for someone.

I noticed though that it's mainly Mistborn fanart... I would love to see more Elantris/Warbreaker/Alcatraz stuff too... But oh well! I wish I could make pictures as cool as some!

I think Mistborn lends itself most easily to illustrating cool imagery, though Warbreaker has it's awesome moments.
But don't worry, The Way of Kings will pass 'em all. It's even better than Mistborn as a source of interesting and fun stuff to draw.

You can adjust the exposure settings in the scanner software to get good results with subtle grayscales; the automatic algorithm doesn't always do what you want it to.

I just finished the Mistborn trilogy (and Warbreaker), so I felt compelled to make a new cover for the books. There are still a few small things I would like to do, but I think they are mostly done. Let me know what you think, and if there is anything else I should do/fix.

For the past several years most of my drawing has been limited to design sketches, but today I drew Vin and I thought my sketch was worth inking ... you may disagree, I suppose. I had planned to do this digitally but I couldn't find the pen for my tablet, so it was done with ink and watered-down acrylic, I may try a digital version eventually, probably with color.
The background's very ... splotchy. Which was kind of the goal, but it didn't come out quite like I wanted. Ah well.

A picture that Sanderson once said he hoped someone would draw. I'm abou 75% happy with it. Unfortunately I get lazy sometimes and stop trying.
I drew this at the end of 2008, I think.
I hope to start doing a lot more Sanderson art, because I've read everything he's written (OK, not his WoT book, but even though he wrote that, it's not really his story) and it's all awesome.
Way of Kings is one of the best books I've read.

Nope. There haven't been many attempts to illustrate specific scenes... and even if they had been, it's an open field, I don't think there's a checklist or anything that's being marked. Multiple interpretations is one of the more interesting aspects of fan-art in general.

I like the picture of Vin. It's really detailed, and the shading is nice. You've definitely got talent, clz.
If I'm seeing the background correctly, though, I think that Vin is supposed to be flying through the air. If I'm wrong, don't take the next comments too seriously. If I'm right, though, she seems too stiff. I'm no artist, but I hear that depicting motion is hard. On the other hand, you've got talent, so I'm sure you can work that out.

Everything has been tilted about 45 degrees counter clockwise, to the right of her head you can see a balcony railing, once you see that it's pretty clear.

Look at her belt, the coin pouch is hanging down, use that to re-orient the picture, and as Arionhawk says the ladder looking thing in the background is a Balcony railing.

I try not to crit much in fan-art threads (unless asked) because many of the artists are showing purely to express their love for the material, and not to get feedback on technique.
On DA or artist forums like ConceptArt or Penciljack, critique is part of the point of showing your work there. You don't want to post to CA unless you're ready to stand beside your work. But here it's a different environment.

Wow, all the art here is pretty awesome. I love the koloss pieces. It makes me want to start up some fan art as well...that could take a while. I work mostly with paint and charcoal, and I kind of hate working with graphite. But I will do some fanart eventually! *instert dramatic pose*
