I know that several of people on this site are good at coming up with names. What I need is a good, masculine name. No, it not for some imaginary character is some story that I'm writing. The fact is, my wife and I are expecting are third son at the end of September. We've been trying to think of a good name and after eliminating all of the names in several baby books, we just don't know what to do. Therefore, I'm open to suggestions.
Part of the problem is that I want this son to have a unique name. I refuse to give him a name that is the same name as one of my relatives. Considering that I come from a large, male dominated family, this eliminates many names and most of the common ones. Also, my wife is relunctant to consider names that begin with C, K, I, or L. My oldest son continues to suggest names from cartoons that he watches, but unless he is born with a big blue arrow on his head, I'm really not considering these suggestions.
So, any suggestions?

I know someone named Martell. I thought that was a unique name without going too off-the-wall about it.

I know I've always been partial to Parker, too. ;-)
Seriously, names are such a personal thing--I'm not sure what to tell you. My wife and I limit ourselves to names that will work in both English and Slovak (since she's from Slovakia), and then there's the Slovak name calendar, which also limits us. In other words, the way we come up with names probably won't work for you.

As the child's uncle, I have to give my two cents, which of course have a much greater value than anyone elses two cents.
First, I'm offended that you don't like the names Elmer or Herckamer.
Second, let me narrow your choices for you to help ease your mind:
Martell--too apple cidery
Aiden--Taken by one of our cousins twice removed
Brady--let's not bring up that argument again
Darren--being considered for one of my other future nephews
Garret--I think he beat you up in junior high
Harrison--no last names as first names (what would the Harrison's think?)
Parker--well what would he use as his handle on TWG?
Trent--Trent/trench, trent/trench...I wonder where this will place the kid
Weston--we have lived almost our entire lives in the West, so no
Obadiah--has potential
I know that helped you and your wife immensely. You may thank me later.

That it may be. But that doesn't change the fact that it's still a poor choice due to modern cultural baggage.

It's not very unique, but I think Aaron is a good name. I also like Obadiah, you could call him Obie for short ;), and if your las name is Won Kanobie, then you are in luck, your son is a jedi.
*I apologize in advance for the mispellings of "Won" or Kanobie," I'm not that framiliar with Star Wars, at least not enough to know correct spellings.

Why haven't you considered Vern? (that's a metaphore for life there)

Austin (Paris Hilton was named after a city and look how she turn out)

Sabin (It would be nice if the child could absorb the sound of his older brothers)
Maxim (Do we really need to condemn the child to being a cross-dressing male prostitute just yet?)

Noah (With global warming this might be a wise choice, but his parents are not evironmentalists)

Abacus (His mother likes math, but even she might find this choice to be strange)

Elend (has some possibility, but it's very close to one our nieces names)
Not even going to mention FirstMateJack's suggestions, though I fear for his children.
Aaron (nice name, but the kid has an uncle with that name already)

It sounds like you're basically shooting down the names just to shoot them down. Is it because you want your brother to choose something you thought up, you're feeling argumentative, or what? Just curious.

I also think that FirstMateJack's names were innapropriate, but I didn't remark on them because I thought he might be joking. If he isn't he needs help, but if he is, I probably just mada fool of myself. ;)

Mostly just to shoot them down. Largely to tease my "younger" brother. ;D
Okay, I do have to use this name for the rest of my life in one way or another. I do hope it is a name I can 1) pronounce, 2) spell, 3) remember, 4) differentiate from the gazillion other family names I have to remember, 5) say without laughing or feeling embarrassed. I would also hope that my brother has enough sense not to give his child a name that traumatizes him.
And I honestly don't know if I could someday accept a kidney from someone named Emron. ;)

First, let me clarify that uncles have no naming rights for this child whatsoever. If you like a name, start having your own kids!
Second, for my dear twin brother, be careful about referring to me as your "younger" brother. That might generate some maturity comparisons that you will regret.
Third, be careful about shooting down some of these names as you might offend someone who reads this website.
I am grateful for the suggestion that have been given so far, many of which are under consideration. Please feel free to continue to make suggestions.
My wife wanted to point out that the name needs to match with our others sons names. So we were wondering what names people thought match well with Isaac and Leif?

I re-read some of the messages and I just have to ask. Does your son watch Avatar and want to name his brother Aang? That's the only cartoon I could think of that has character with and arrow on his head. I think it's a great show, but should not be used as a reference for naming children.

Yes, my son watches Avatar. I agree that Avatar should not be used as a reference for naming children, but that not what my oldest son thinks. He keeps on telling us that we should consider the name "Aang." Therefore, as consideration, if the child is born with a big blue arrow on his head then the child may be named Aang, otherwise, it's unlikely.

THe problem is, when you start threatening maturity comparisons, you've already lost the "maturity" game.
Third, be careful about shooting down some of these names as you might offend someone who reads this website.
If he does, it's just as well. If that post can offend someone, something I post is *bound* to offend them sooner or later. Probably sooner than later.

Another suggestion: Orion.
And 42, they're just suggestions. I'm not attached to any of the names (I thought Emron would be a cool inside reference since it's not a commonly known name from BOM and he's a Nephite soldier). I am just trying to help Lost generate some ideas. :D

Have you ever considered "Cumulonimbus" or "Fortyseven"?

These are all that's coming to mind at the moment. I'd recommend other names, but I had to use up most of mine when I kept having boys. :P

But I love the Welsh spelling of David, though the poor kid would be spelling his name out for people constantly.

It's good insurance against telemarketers, and someday my son Padraig will thank me. As it is, he already feels unique and special because he usually gets a look of surprise when he spells his name for people. Now if I can just get him to be a little more choosy about to whom he spells his name . . . I shoulda taken the OB's advice and given him the middle name of Knucklehead. Or maybe Precocious.

When considering what to name our children I always bring up -
Bishop
Senator
Mister
General
and suggest that if we want a family name then we should consider
Grandma
Uncle
But we always end up using something else. You may ask "where is my wife's sense of adventure?"
We have used real family names and biblical names. I actually prefer names that you can spell. Check out the chapter on names in Freakanomics before you decide to use a weird spelling.

Yes, I already checked out the chapter on names in Freakonomics. Thus, naming this next son is very important to me. The name needs to be adventurous, unique, but not one that would give him a complex.

Just remember, your child will have to live with this name for the rest of his life. I have an unusual name, and I admit, it gets annoying having to constantly correct people on pronunciation or spelling. Please, be kind to your child!

I'm naming my third son. My wife already named the dog "Lily".
My wife and I like unusual names that don't sound so strange that the kid will be mocked or beat up. But then again, I've known a lot of kids in normal names that were mocked and got beat up.

The name is Ian Paul.
We were seriously considering Orion and Elijah and hadn't really consider Ian, but once my wife and I saw the boy, he looked more like an Ian than an Orion or Elijah. Funny how that worked out. Thanks for all of the help and, consider how few girls are born into the family, I will keep these name suggestion on boy names in mind.

Congrats on the baby and for everything going well. Even though you didn't choose Orion or Elijah, it's cool that you were considering some of my suggestions :). Also, I think it's funny you picked Ian since in your first post to the thread you said your wife was relunctant to name him something beginning with I.
My husband and I already have 4 names picked out, and I worry that when we have a baby, we'll realize the name doesn't fit. We're pretty attached to the names, and the order we want to give them (one order for the boys and one for the girls, with two each). Hmmm, we'll have to see what happens.

I have two nephews named Atlas and Orion.
and I have an 8 month old (third) and we named him Ian Yance. His dad, not joking totally serious, wanted to name him.... are you ready, cause its a shocker.... Barnabus. Yes, yes, I know... I was worried myself for a while. ;D
