Title: Welcome.
Post by: Fellfrosch on December 14, 2003, 01:54:07 AM
I, for one, thought that Fell's book was amazing.

wouldn't know. Havent' gotten it yet. I think that guy's just lazy. I mean, how hard is it to click "Reply to All" and then "attach," find his document, double click it, then click "Send"

I hope he hasn't taken that many short cuts with his novel.

BTW, I think we should make a thread for each novel we're looking at. I'm thinking even each chapter, just so it's easier to review when you're making changes to your book.

I think that i would like to know who gave Gemm my email address. I feel exposed now.

SE, i got your email. But i was rather bored with its contents. You did a rimmer with the silences.

Entropy, sometimes you make less sense than Gemm

Well, thanks for telling me that Entropy. I didn't realize I had yours, but now that I do, don't worry too much.

I don't know how many other people have read, but I'm looking at my writing, and really only the last 3 chapters have length to them. THe first four are pretty short. So next time maybe we can do two chapters. Depends on how this goes.

I sent a link. Do you still have the email?

That's why I thought I lost it.  I was looking for an email with a large file size, but it's a link.  Thanks

Oh, and by the way, as an after-thought you couldn't think of putting this one nearer to the top, like say after "everything else?" Just a thought.

This thread is way too limited to be at the top. The people who are supposed to be here will look for it, and the rest will ignore it.

Stacer: you are right. It should be 10 eastern, 8 mountain. my bad.

Fell: apparently it is. Someone please email Fell a copy if you have it. Otherwise, I'll send it when I get home tonight (about 4 hours from now, maybe a touch more.

Ok, that went good. Next chat is at the same bat time, same bat channel. Hopefully Fell's connection will keep him with us better.
Here's the deal:
Next Tuesday, Dec 30th (we said the 29th in the chat, but we meants Tuesday, which is the 30th), 10pm Eastern, 8pm Mountain, we'll chat again. Catch up if you didn't show up tonight.
For next week, we will be doing:
Chapters 2 & 3 of Krag the Unbeliever (Fell's novel)
Chapter 2 of Peks' Tale (my novel)
and a short story by Gemm (ask him if you didn't get it tonight)

Be prepared to give critical (but helpful!) comments and such.

Tonight was good, I got a lot out of it

Saint - i didn't mean to be online. I was sleeping. I got up at 6am this morning. Ergo, going to a writers group that begins at 4am or so is not good.

oh, and Dr. P, I don't see why you couldn't join. If you want to comment on the current crop, drop me and Fell and Gemm emails so we can send you copies of what we're reading for tomorrow night's chat.

Fell and Saint, sorry I haven't emailed you my comments from last week yet. I've been trying to hurry and pass my classes.   :-[  I'll do what I can tomorrow but may still be a little behind. Once this week is over and I've turned in the final paper for this class (Friday), I will do better and catch up.

finish your school, and don't stress it. I'm working on the second half of the novel right now, so it's not necessary to ahve those notes right away.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on December 30, 2003, 03:30:53 PM
I must have lost them. I'm really sorry. If anyone has a chance, please re-email them to me (anyone, please). Also, I am still in need of Gemm's story.

Blast. Sorry about that.

actually, you can still get mine off the link from the NaNoWriMo calander I made. it's the same manuscript.

I'll email you a link to all three from my work address. I uploaded to a space so I could see them from work without printing. There's no way to get to the others without knowing the exact address, though.

To the justbeacusehesevil... address?

Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on December 31, 2003, 01:44:15 AM
ok, it's obvious I need to work out some character relationships, but another good chat.

Next chat is Jan 6, same bat time, same bat channel. we didn't do Gemm's story, so we'll be doing his next week, along with another 2 chapters of Krag the Unbeliever and one more of Peks' Tale (the last short chapter of the book -- chapter 4 is twice the average length so far))

it would help if we all tried to read BEFORE tuesday, though, so we don't start more than an hour late like tonight.

by the way, Dr. Pepper, I don't have an email address for you. You'll have to mail me
Oh, and folks, it won't really impact this time around, but I redivided the later chapters, and cut off the ending that I never intended to stay more than 24 hours.
So, it's at the same link, email me if you need me to resend the link.

Krag 4-5, and Pek 2-3, right?
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 06, 2004, 03:39:36 PM
Peks 3, actually, though I'll ask for feedback from 2 that I haven't gotten yet. SHould we just start half an hour late? I know an hour late made a lot of people tired last time.

I really can't say when is best for me because my schedule isn't firm yet (here's hoping that happens soon!)  And anyways I've got this trillian thing up and I really don;t know how it works, so if any of you read this and notice that I'm not chatting with you then post here and tell me what to do.

I'll be posting a thread for more follow up tomorrow sometime on Peks chapter 3.

ok, Fell never showed up, so next week we'll do Krag chap 4-5 and Peks Chapter 4.

Do we still need to choose a new meeting time?
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Fellfrosch on January 07, 2004, 06:01:32 PM
There is virtually no time that is convenient (read: possible) for me to meet under current circumstances. Possibly late night on a weekend.

Tuesday nights are fine with me. This week I forgot Writing Group because I hadn't gone more than once, and so I planned something before it.

Wednesdays, and Thursdays are also good.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 07, 2004, 07:09:15 PM
ok, let's move it to Wednesdays, and Fell will join us when his life is slightly more manageable
In the mean time, we can press on with what we've got.

So, next chat meeting, Wed, 1/14, 10 pm eastern, 8 pm mountain, we'll be discussing Peks 4, and MoD has said she wants us to look at a movie review. I'm sure we can handle a third short piece, if anyone needs.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Lieutenant Kije on January 07, 2004, 08:56:06 PM
Ok.  A question: would Saint and Gemm and anyone else prefer to have their stuff read one chapter at a time, or is it okay to read it all and only comment on the chapter at hand?
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 07, 2004, 10:03:42 PM
I don't mind if you read the whole thing at once, but I'm only going to lead discussions on my stuff one chapter at a time.
If you do read all the rest of what I've written, make sure you get the version with the new chapter divisions (found in the same place as the old version)

ANd you say you can't find the AIM Lite or whatever it is?
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 15, 2004, 12:19:15 AM
if it happens again, you can try http://www.aim.com/get_aim/express/aim_expr.adp?aolp=

It's a non-client way of connecting to AIM. Needs cookies, but not installations. Don't know if it supports chat rooms though.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on January 15, 2004, 12:55:24 PM
That's exactly the one I was trying to find. I don't have the AIM client, but since none of my other accounts could sign in either, I think it was something with Trillian or with the computer. Since my husband's computer has ME, that's not outside the realm of possibility.

I've almost got my computer up and running, except for the fact that it won't release the ip address, and for some reason I can't use the internet.

/me grumbles "I hate MS"

Does this mean that there was no writing group last night?

We talked about Gemm's story, and I asked Dr. P some basic questions to get his feedback on issues that have come up before.

We're meeting again next Wed. 10pm for easterners, 8 pm for Utah. 9 if you live in between. We'll be reading Peks Chapter 4 and Dr. P's chapter(s) that he sent out by email. Possibly MoD's article if she gets around to distributing it.

It would be courteous to have read before Wed night. Everyone should have the bits by Dr. P and by me.

Post by: stacer on January 21, 2004, 01:29:29 AM
I'm getting further and further behind, guys, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to say that for at least another couple of weeks I'm not going to be reliable. Tomorrow night is temple night and it's unlikely I'll be home before 10 or 11, and I still haven't had a chance to look at the most recent stuff, and won't during the day because I've had to actually start working at work.  :P The other temp is on vacation for another couple of weeks, one of the EAs has quit and her last day is tomorrow, so that leaves me, the underpaid, non-insured temp to cover everyone else. I had about 10 projects dumped on me today alone, and was able to complete 5 of them, and then everyone comes with more.

This would all be simply wonderful if there were any kind of indication that they were wanting to keep me on in a permanent position and give me a salary that actually pays the rent. Instead, what's happening is that I've worked in that department for three months and they won't even give me a phone extension or email. So when I have to forward electronic files to people (which is one of the main duties of my job) I have to physically walk across the building and tell them that I've put a file on the server for them, tell them the name of the file, and hope they remember it. And it would be even better if I had gotten paid for that mandatory day off on Monday.

I suppose this should be under rantage, but all that is to point out that I may be going low, if not gone, for a week or two, and won't be making it tomorrow night.

guys - something's come up and I'm not going to make it tonight.  I have read Peks 5 and the Horror, so just post main questions/concerns with those works and I'll respond on the board.  I have lost my copy of Dr. P's stuff.  If I can get another copy I'll respond in a like manner.

Yeah, I know. I over did it with errands last night and by the time 8 rolled around I was neither finished reading, nor in a very pleasant mood. So I'm sorry. I did finish reading, if anyone has general questions.

I thought we were doing Peks 5 last night.  I guess I'm just pre-prepared.  :)

Can someone send me a copy of Dr. P's stuff?

And I've got a story that needs some feedback if we're lacking for stuff to discuss.  It's about 5000 words.

I'll send it to you.

And the story sounds good. Peks 5 and Kije's story next week good for everyone?

Oh, and on the subject of Peks 5, I changed the chapter divisions from the first time I sent the link so make sure you have the 9 chapter version rather than 7 or whatever it was before. If you don't, just re-download it. It's in the same place, same file name.

Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: stacer on January 28, 2004, 02:59:41 PM
I do like it better; it's just that there are complications in my life right now that I have to deal with and the writing group has gotten pushed to the back. I still have to finish that class I got an extension on, and this last month has been kind of crazy socially and I'm still dealing with the aftereffects of a DTR last night, and I'm just not going to have the time to devote to writing group for the next week or two like I thought I would. I just keep getting further and further behind, I know, and I really do *want* to participate, but right now I'm just not able to make it a priority.  :-[  I know it throws you guys off, and I'm really sorry.

ok, uh..

Some didn't show up who had indicated they would. Some didn't read.

Uh.. that was REALLY disappointing.

Please let us know if you're not showing up. PLEASE pay attention when I post what's going to happen so you can ask for clarification or say it won't work.

RIght now, it's another week. Next wednesday. Feb 4. 10 pm Eastern. PLEASE HAVE READ BEFORE THEN! You should have the links. If not tell me. I'll fix it. If you have a busy Wednesday, read before then. This is a mutal aid thing, it's not fair to say you'll be there and ready and then not be.

If you have a problem with the time or the material, post here, we'll try to work it out as a group.

Sorry if it comes off too strong, i'm just a little upset that I waited till 10 and then had nothing to do.

For the record, we'll be doing Kije's story, and my chapter 5.

I think Gemm would be ok with it, hwoever, I have to wake up at 6 to get to work. If we don't START until 11, then we go for 2 hours like we have been, well... 5 hours of sleep is VERY unfun. 10 is the latest I can go.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on January 29, 2004, 12:37:51 PM
Yes Kije, I did. It wasn't there. And for the record, I'm closing that account (I have too many to keep track of), so please don't send any more emails there.

I understand Saint. It's just that I usually don't get home until 6:30 or 7:00, and on the off chance that we have to run errands, my chances of getting home by 8 are very small. Maybe in the future, if you don't mind, give 30 mins to get on rather than 15. I'm not saying wait if there's enough to get a writing group started, but if there isn't, don't disappear quite so fast.

What do you think?
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 29, 2004, 01:06:29 PM
it still would have only been three, because SOMEBODY, who can't be bothered to read this thread and thinks that is MY fault didn't even read. He didn't finish reading one of the stories until 10:15, and didn't even start the other. Partially because he suddenly realized that we had the group last night at about 9:20, then spent the next 40 minutes WHINING about how busy he had been and how long the chapter is instead of actually READING.

So , there wasn't a reason to hang around.

I'll wait up to half an hour if I know that there's something to wait for. I didn't wait for professors for more than 15 minutes, I don't wait for much that long. But I'll wait that long if I know I haven't just been ditched.

I hope i'm posting this in the right place.. I'd like to jump in for the second slot this week.. if it's alright with you'uns.

I'll send out my story today.. it's just a short story I wrote last year. I like to write things and then put them away for a while to ferment. Also gives me a chance to step back and take a fresh look later. So this is one that ready to air out and be critiqued. Thanks heaps!

I'd like to know the basics I guess.. does the story make sense? DOes it have good flow or is it too slow? Does anyone see the connection i tried to make between jona's desicion and her father's desicion?

Thanks so much!

Phew.  I sat down to watch the West Wing with my wife and completely forgot about it.

I can see how interest has flagged.  Only when we have a community of writers who write regularly enough to submit regularly will we have any kind of continuing cooperation, I think.  Myself excluded.  I like working with other people on their pieces, even if I don't write so often myself.

So do we have enough? I have two options on how to spend my evening, and if we don't have enough people, I can spend it cleaning my room, which I've lost complete track of in the last month. I need to find the floor again! And I need to weed. But if there are enough people I'll spend my evening reading in preparation. Which is it?

KIje and I usually show up, if you show up, and possibly Gemm and MoD... well, that's plenty.

Aw, but that would be half the fun!  ;D  Plus, it wouldn't all be country music. There'd be disco involved, specifically Gloria what's-her-name's "I Will Survive." That's such a girl-power song. But then, there's also SheDaisy's "Get Over Yourself." That's a fun one, putting me right back in country.   :D

a few things: next week is Peks 9. Plus something else if someone jumps on it soon and distributes it. I'll be emailing this chapter, as in my manuscript online the chapter has not been completed.

We also talked about moving it up an hour. The reason we do it at 10 is because of MoD, and she hasn't been showing up anyway. Since my body is apparently unhealthy and i'm dead exhausted by 10, I thought we should move it up to 9. If no one objects then that's what we'll do next week. Wednesday at 9pm easter (7 for you Utahns).

Naturally, since MoD can't make it that early, if she says she wants to come, we'll push back to 10 again.

Also, JamPaladin said he might like to join, I told him that would be great.

And finally, you don't have to have a finished story. If you want to talk about some ideas you have and want to solidify, or you're stuck and want help on how to move on, we can talk about those things on Wednesdays too.

Post by: stacer on March 05, 2004, 12:02:26 PM
Why don't I dust one off and send it round.

Okay, so I think SE has seen an early, early version of this from years ago. It's a retelling of the Scottish folk tale The Black Bull of Norroway, a beauty and the beast variation. Since I went to Scotland, I have updated it a little, but it's still REALLY bad. I don't think I've even looked at it for a year. I've skipped around in the writing process and only written the beginning and part of the middle, so this manuscript is so bad. Shall we say the first 2 or 3 chapters? They're short. The whole manuscript right now is only 16 pages, so if that's not too long I'd love you to look at the overall story arch (what there is of it).

What I need is general feedback on what it's looking like so far, whether the dialog is working, whether it's interesting at all.

Augh! I just realized I thoughtlessly double-booked myself. I won't be home tonight until at least 10, and I can't guarantee that because I'm dependent on others for a ride home. I know that last time I got home by 9:30 or 10, so I could still possibly show up, but I definitely won't be able to be there by 9. Can we say 10 again,  and that I might be a little late?  :-[

exactly.

Ok - I seriously dropped the ball and forgot.  I apologize.  I know it's a pain for you to wait up that late, and even though it wasn;t for me you all were waiting, it makes it kind of moot when no one shows up.  I hope someone else made it in.  I will definitely post comments.

My wife tells me I need a reminder calendar.  I'm getting one.  This stuff happens to me too often.

well, jampaladin and Stacer and I met. It went pretty good, though we did miss your comments.

I haven't written chapter 10, so we won't have that next week. JP is going to be sending round a longish story. From what I understand, it's long enough that we might not want to read a second one. I'm reserving judgement on that until I see it. If it's short enough, I may submit a short short story as well. Look for the email.

Yeah, about 9k words. I'll send it around tonight probably.

this goes down tomorrow folks. Read 'em if you got 'em. Unless I'm really productive today, I'll be sending out a short story for next week. I'll definitely bow out of that if there are other people who want feedback first, since we've already done a lot of my stuff.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Gemm: Rock & Roll Star; Born to Rock on March 19, 2004, 04:34:00 PM
I have a short story I'd like to share with everyone. I'll mail it out today, and be around wednesday night for comments. And any comments you want just add them somewhere here.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: stacer on March 19, 2004, 05:07:29 PM
That's probably a good thing, because it's unlikely that I'll get my chapter done by tomorrow morning, which is when I said I'd try to do it by. I have a talk to give in church on Sunday, so I've been spending my spare time on that. I will still work on the chapter, but I doubt it'll be ready for this coming week. Probably next week.

actually, Gemm, we're already full. I'm sending out a story tonight and Stacer is tomorrow. Show up for some of the chats and keep up. We can do yours the week after though.

Post by: Gemm: Rock & Roll Star; Born to Rock on March 19, 2004, 05:23:41 PM
Err.... what do you mean by tonight and tomorrow? Do you mean the normal day and time, or is there a new day and time?
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on March 19, 2004, 05:25:35 PM
no, i mean that my email with the story is leaving tonight and you should see it if you're up late enough on your computer (which is only going to be like 9 or so eastern) and Stacer's is going to be distributed saturday morning. We're discussing on wednesday still. shooting for the 9pm time slot.

MoD told me she's going to come, so unless anyone objects, we'll do this at 10 easter, 8 mountain

Yes, it HAS occured to me that despite the fact thatwe moved the time almsot a month ago, we've never held it at the new time. But still...
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: JP Dogberry on March 24, 2004, 09:09:30 PM
Right. On orders of SE, I am to inform you all we're moving back to the normal time, which is one hour before the time we did it last week. Which is the supposed normal time.

Oh great, now I'm confused as to what time it is.

Anyway, it's on on it's original schelduled time.

That's in half an hour from the time of this posting.

Post by: Mistress of Darkness on March 24, 2004, 11:32:44 PM
I like 7/9et best. It's enough time for me to come home and eat dinner, but not enough time for me to possibly run errands beforehand, which is what always made me late before.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: stacer on March 27, 2004, 01:48:23 PM
So, SE, you going to send your chapter round? I haven't typed up mine yet (i.e., it's written on paper but not in the computer yet), but could send it round by late tonight if you're not going to send yours.

Oh, and MoD, were you ever able to open my chapter from last week? If so, did you have any other comments?

i have not completed chapter 10 yet. I may by midnight. Whichever one of us posts that we've finished first should jsut send it out still.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Gemm: Rock & Roll Star; Born to Rock on March 28, 2004, 03:01:00 PM
I just finished a story today. Not sure if you all want to add that one to the one I already sent out. Its a little over 550 words, since it's one of my assignments for my Creative Writing class.

I'm a bit proud of this one because I just made up four names, and one of the most ridiculous monsters you'd ever see in a fantasy setting.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: stacer on March 28, 2004, 05:08:12 PM
I'd say save that for another time. I'll have my chapter done today and send it round.

Yeah, one per author per week is a good rule.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: stacer on March 29, 2004, 11:02:29 PM
So, if you didn't catch on, my chapter isn't really ready, either. I blame stupid boys. That, and I haven't really had time to sit down and look at the chapter to be sure I want other eyes to see it yet. So it looks like we'll just have the one story for this week. Sorry. I'll have it ready by next week.

I just forwarded it to you. Gemm, you might want to be sure it was sent to everyone.

Errr... I thought I sent it out some time last week. I'm pretty sure I did. I'll resend though.

EDIT: Crap and a half. I errr... ummm... don't have any of my work on my laptop. Its all on my desktop at school. So umm... errr... if someone who has it already could sent it out to those who need it. Major poopsmith....

I haven't gotten anything either.

The other piece was supposed to be mine. I can still send out what I've got of Chapter 2, but it's not really finished. It's only 5 or 6 pages long, and I don't really think it's all that interesting yet. Do you want to see it?

Oh, and I tried to forward Gemm's piece to you, MoD, but I still didn't have the yahoo address right. I'll try one more time.

I just sent to the good address for Izzy. remember there's an "x" people. Update your addres books n' stuff.

Yeah, Stacer and I were both supposed to finish chapterst hat didn't finish. so there isn't a second one this time.

I am so so so sorry I missed tonight. It was totally unexpected and unavoidable. I got stranded in Cambridge while helping a friend move, didn't have my purse with me and had no money or T pass and wasn't able to get home till 10:30. Sorry, guys. I'll be there next week. I'll post comments here for Gemm's story hopefully tomorrow (it's too late and I can't think straight about it right now).

What's the decision for next week's submissions? I can have chapter 2 ready for next week if it's not full already.

oh, and we'll meet at NINE eastern. (daylight or standard, whatever is prevalent after the clocks get set forward). NINE is our standard time. This message is to prevent any confusion about meeting time.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on April 01, 2004, 02:11:33 PM
Okay, so EST equals the standard time for the Abridged Speculists. That's a good idea.

And Saint, I have to say that I am now glad that we are just the Abridged Speculists. All the stupid newbs are making "of doom" incredibly lame and stupid.

/me sets the newbs on fire. They don't notice, but it makes her feel better.

Just a question:

Do you guys mind me posting writer-themed discussion topics in this area?  I figured this was a good place, since the topics near the top were getting a bit cluttered, for good, serious writing discussions.

However, I realize you founded this section specifically for writing groups.  If I'm cluttering things up too much, I can pack up and go back to 'Everything Else.'
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on April 06, 2004, 07:42:43 AM
no, it's fine. We kind of happily accept anyone into the group who wants to come, so why not have a quasi-group right on the message board.
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: EUOL on April 06, 2004, 08:05:45 AM
I think you miss-understood me. (Or I miss-understood your response.) I'm not looking to writing group (yet.)  I just want to make certain it's okay with you all that I'm making topics in this area of the forum.  (Like my 'Women help poor EUOL' topic.)
Title: Re: Welcome.
Post by: stacer on April 06, 2004, 08:53:00 AM
I think what he's saying is that's the sort of thing a writing group does, and it's not a real writing group, but it's a supportive group kind of environment where you can start topics and get responses. Which is great.

Right, SE?
