I went to TLE's slush reading this evening, and had the chance to proofread "Firstborn." Great job -- I loved it.
-
You read the whole thing in one 2 hour slush read? Wow.
-
Well, they rushed me on the final five pages because time was up. But I'd read a 5000-word slush story before that; otherwise, I would have finished within the hour-and-a-half easily.
I wish I could type as fast as I can read.

I wish I could read as fast as I can type. Kinda makes me slow on the editor side. I think I've developed ADD ever since getting this job.
I'm assuming Firstborn is a short story EUOL submitted to TLE?

Yes. It's a science fiction novelette that will be in the next issue.

You develop ADD regarding whatever you're doing as soon as it's what you're being paid to do.

I never knew such a thing existed.
Did Brandon try to get it published somewhere else first, or did he just write it for TLE specifically?
-
He wrote it for TLE's 50th issue. It wasn't even finished when he first sent it, so I doubt he shopped it around anywhere.
Anyway, it's the first story in the issue.
-
Do we know when the issue comes out, btw? I want to come by and get my copy.
-
Oh yeah, me too. I think that's the one I actually get my name in. ;D If it's not that one, I should find the correct issue and pick it up.
-
They were finishing up layout tonight, I believe. So it shouldn't be long.

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that...
I know TLE is more organized that most of the student publication, but I still remember repeatedly telling student editors to plan more time for layout and production.
The worst offender still goes to the head editor of Insight who made no contact with their hired art director until she was done selecting and editing the articles. Then she just dropped everything off with the art director on a Thursday and said she needed the finished (printed) magazine on Saturday.
If I remember correctly that issue of Insight came out three months later.
-
Issue 50 is at MC printing, so about 2 weeks.

Oldie,
Are you the one who wrote the Further Adventures of Sci-Fi mom in issue 49? I love that. I read it every once-in-a-while when I need a good laugh. It's hilarious. Someday that will be my boys (who are only 18 months and 2 1/2 right now).

Oh my word... Ha ha ha ha ha...
Man...we run pretty tight schedules at TOKYOPOP, but we're sending the mid-January-release books to the press right now. By the time a book actually hits the shelves, I've forgotten what I worked on. (Okay, actually, I can forget that within a couple days...)

Thanks! Yeah, that was me who wrote "The Further Adventures of Sci-Fi Mom." I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who thinks it's funny.

That reminds me--I gotta see if they'll mail me my free copy for being a slush puppy. (Assuming, of course, that they remembered to list my name. I DID go over four times even though I dropped off the face of the earth before I made the big move from Orem to Boston.) However, I'll probably have to pay for shipping so that basically negates the whole "free" part of the deal. Ah, well.
Anyway, a sci fi story from EUOL? How interesting. I wanna read it asap. Of course, I've still got his e-ms of WELL plus two other new fantasy books I bought that I haven't been able to finish yet. *sigh*
-
One of the first Short Stories he ever did was Sci-fi, quite good too considering he wrote it in Highschool.
-
Yeah, I knew about that actually. Thanks, Sprigg. It's just that I know how EUOL leans much more towards fantasy, that's all. But now that I ponder some more, I vaguely remember how, when he dropped by TLE one night to sign copies of ELANTRIS, he may've mentioned something about a new sci fi story for the special anniversary issue. Hmm. I suppose the torturously horrible slush I was reading that night did a number on my memory core. :P
