Title: Mistborn Signing

Well EUOL, should we mention details for the signing that you will be doing in July at my Waldens in Provo?

Usually best not to treat people who want to promote your (relative's) books in such a way.

my apologies - i thought that a new thread that would have actual dates, times, and real info would be good.  I figured some people would want to know the info.  Excuse my ignorance.

Your excused, next time if there's already a thread about the topic on page one post there, I don't like clutter threads.  People are smart enough to scroll to the bottom of a thread to read your comments.

no worries, i understand.  I was in a hurry to get to work to get people to reserve copies of Mistborn, so I should have looked better.

Anyways, here are some fun facts:

As of close today we have sold nearly 50 Elantris MM (mass market paper-back).

In one week we have have 51 reservations for Mistborn: The Final Empire...only 25 copies less than we sold of the Elantris HB on Black Friday.

Imagine how many we will reserve over the next 3 weeks before we have to turn in the order to Tor for the July 22nd signing.

Signing info:

Mistborn National Release July 22nd @ 5pm-Brandon's hand cramping up.  Brandon will be doing a reading, a Q&A, a special numbering of the signed books for this release.  A discout will be offered on the book.  We also have a ton of other stuff that we are finalizing.  To get the book it is recommended you pre-order it so that we can give accurate numbers to Tor and so the Brandon can salivate on the fun he will have with the mobs of people.  Reservation list closes July 8th.

Any q's?

For those of us out of state - Should I just buy a copy at my local BN here, and then post it out to you to be signed, or did anyone have different ideas?  I must make sure I keep up on my first edition signed hardbacks.

(I'm voting for the first option only because I have $16 or so in store credit from BN, which will help me justify this purchase on my "oh, mercy how will we afford gas" budget)

That's a good question, and I'm interested in the answer, too. I won't be at WorldCon get one like last year, but if you're going to WFC and I end up going, I could get one there, or we could do the mail thing.

Also, I have vacation coming up and I'll try to read Mistborn 3 sometime during then, but we'll see what else I've got going on. It's still on the radar, though.

I'll leave that up to Brandon to decide on that topic.  It may be tricky to to that with our signing since its before the nation-wide release and no one else can legally sell it before the 25th of July except the Provo, UT Waldenbooks.

Maybe others have some suggestions...

Fuzzy,

I'd be happy to sign a book for you.  You could:

A)  Send money to someone out here (preferably not me--it would be better to not have to worry about another thing that day) and have them buy you one at the pre-release.  That way, you might be able to get one of the numbered copies.

2) Buy it from Amazon and have it shipped directly to me.  Then, send me a check for postage, and I'll send the book back.

III) Just send a copy whenever, along with postage, and I'll send it back.

Brandon, you still have a numbered copy of Elantris for me, right? You didn't bring it with you when you came down to Torrance.

So for Mistborn you're not numbering any before this signing?
Title: Re: Mistborn Signing
Post by: Spriggan on June 19, 2006, 07:01:42 PM
EUOL told me last night he would number before the signing but it would be hard to find a copy of mistborn before the 25th.  He also said he wouldn't be holding numbers for people like he did with Elantris, so pretty much unless you goto the stupid book signing you don't get a numbered copy.
Title: Re: Mistborn Signing
Post by: EUOL on June 19, 2006, 08:40:53 PM
Sprig, I think I need to stick to what I've said.  Last time, I held books for people, and it became a real pain.  EVERYBODY wanted me to hold numbers for them, which meant I either had to:

A) Skip numbers, then remember which ones I skipped and get them later.
B) Sign my own books, then trade them for unsigned versions when I finally managed to meet up with the people I was holding them for.  (This is what I did.  Yes, Ookla, I've still got yours here somewhere!  And one for Izzy too.)

This was far too complicated.  Right now, I'm simply going to number books as they come to me.  That's the only way I can think to do this.  That means numbering the first fifty people who put books in my hands, no matter who they are.

Maybe some bookstores will put them on the shelves before the 22nd.  Or, maybe my copies will come early.  If they do, I'll go ahead and sell them for the price that they'll be sold at the Waldenbooks signing (then sign and number them) then replace them when I go to Waldenbooks.

However, if you want a numbered copy, chances are pretty good that you'll have to get one at the signing.

Hey, Guitarbabe Diamante, where do you work again? And what time will this hand-cramping shindig start? I've managed to corral dear Jena into promising to drop by and get my copies signed. ;D It won't be released by the time I visit on July 4th and I won't be back home until Dec.

Hmm. I was going to buy them on Amazon and ship them to her, but maybe I ought to have you put me down on your store's reservation list?? Can I pay ahead of time with a CC or do you have to pay that night?

It's at the Waldenbooks in the Town Center.

And what's this about a reservation list?  Umm...since when is EUOL important enough to require people to get his approval weeks in advance for him to sign a book?
Title: Re: Mistborn Signing
Post by: Bookstore Guy on June 21, 2006, 04:18:17 PM
no worries shrain

I work at the Waldenbooks in the Provo Town Center Mall - the #1 ranked Waldens in the company I might add!  8)

As far as paying for the book, the company doesn't accept payment in advance on books.  I was told it was a legal issue with street-dates and stuff, but I could be wrong.  Depending on what Tor says, we may be only allowed to sell the book once Brandon gets there, and not before - hopefully this will not be the case.

The event starts at 5pm on July 22nd.  If you want to be put on the reserve list to have your boyfriend, girlfriend, parent, family member, dog, cat, iguana, or friend pick it up for you to get signed by Brandon please send me your name and phone # and the qty of books you want reserved.  I tell you to send it to me because I dont think people should put that kind of info on a forum.

Anyone else who is local can also send me their info and I will sign you up on the reserve list as well.

We have reserved over 70 copies I believe, and the reserve list closes on July 8th.

Please send emails to the address listed on my profile.  I will reply to your email confirming that I have reserved a copy in your name.

You can talk to me at work anytime, my name is Steve.  C'mon in any time and i'll help you to the best of my abilities.  Most people seem to like my recommendations.
Title: Re: Mistborn Signing
Post by: Bookstore Guy on June 21, 2006, 04:38:08 PM
Sprig - since this is an advanced release of Mistborn, we are doing reservations.  It has several purposes.  Mainly, we want to order from Tor only the copies needed.  By having a reserve list, be can be more accurate in that ordering process.
If we order too few, fans get mad at us, and more unfortunatly get mad at Brandon sometimes.
If we order too many, then we have a huge backstock to sell, and have to dig ourselves out of a hole.
It also gives us an idea of how many people to expect that evening.  There are other people coming that night to help promote the event, and they need as much info. as possible.
From a marketing standpoint, a reservation list builds awareness and excitement.  The more excited people are, the more likely they are to tell their friends about it - thus generating even more awareness and excitement.
Apart from that, Brandon is a local favorite.  Just so people understand, Elantris outsold the new books from guys like Martin, Jordan, Hobb, Goodkind (easily), Pratchett, Scott Card, etc.  I am glad he has been nominated for the Campbell, because Elantris could have sold even more copies if people in bookstores did their jobs.  Barnes and Noble names Elantris the best new SF/Fantasy of the year, and they have maybe 2 copies in their stores.  Borders was excited when they sold 5 of his books at a nook signing (that was sucessful to them).  Elantris could have sold double what it did.  So, Mistborn - with more press, and more readers - should sell a TON more.  I want to make sure it does at my store.

That's why there is a reserve list, and that's why he deserves the attention.

Sweet. Thanks for the details. I'll email you. Oh, and I'll have to drop by when I am in town (July 1-5).

I agree that Mistborn should be able to beat sales records for Elantris. As great as Elantris was, I think Mistborn outshines it. Plus, EUOL's name is out there now. It's rather cool that Elantris outsold new books from those high profile authors. So with help from knowledgable booksellers like yourself, it'll be very exciting to see how the book does.

I just wish I could be at the signing mysefl! *sigh* My pet dragon--er, friend--will just have to stand in for me.

I think I'll wait until EUOL has written his six hundred sixty-sixth book and get the six hundred sixty-sixth copy signed. Since we all know he's going to end up having written more than Robert Jordan, Tolkien, and most of the other fantasy writers of our time. =P

Nessa, if you were going to the signing anyway, I'd be thrilled if you wanted to steward my two copies! Par-tay! Hope the signing party rocked. I was surprised when Walden Books actually called me. The girl went on for about two minutes, rapidly describing all the fun to be had--games, prizes, the whole shebang--before I could get a word in edgewise and inform her I was in Boston. heh. (Thanks again, Nessa, for being my stand-in!) Sorry I had to miss out on it. :(

Mistborn Event Recap:

well then, heres how it went:

awesome!!!!  There was a pretty long line!  Our store air conditioning broke yesterday...it was kinda hot inside.  Sorry about that eveyone!!!

Brandon sold quite a few novels (im not telling acutal numbers)!!  Apart from the copies of Mistborn, we also sold a fair number of Elantris hardback and paperpack.

I had numerous comparisons drawn between me and a drug dealer....

Brandon was fabulous!  He knows how to work the crowd and make everyone feel good about the story!!  He did a reading from Alcatraz which went over perfectly.  His Q&A was very good.  People actually asked a lot of good questions!!

Pictures:  I took a bunch...if you were there you saw me.  I will try to get them to someone so they can be posted...just tell me who to get them to.

It was good to put some faces with names - to all you, keep in touch!

I hope you all had a good time!  Brandon may be doing more events like this at the same store in the future, i'll keep you all informed!!

Steve

The line was long. I waited for 1.5+ hours (despite my warning my husband, this very much annoyed him). There was a rumor that some people started showing up at 1pm when the signing wasn't until 5pm? Is this true?

I got interviewed by a chick from the Daily Herald while I was waiting in line. I express myself much better in writing than verbally so I hope I didn't make a complete idiot of myself. And if anyone gets the Herald, I would sure love a copy of the article.

It was fun to finally meet some TWGers. I wished I could have stayed to chat.

I just have to express sincere appreciation to everyone who came to the event.

It warms my heart, really.  You all know me, and many of you see me fairly often.  You didn't need to come and wait in line to see me!  But, the fact that you did--and that it generated that much excitement from other people, and got so much attention for the book--was wonderful!

I really worry about people driving all the way to see me and get a book, and not being able to spend much time talking to them.  These things are so busy!  I'm sorry if I didn't get to chat with anyone enough.

Also, the Waldenbooks team was awesome.

Just thought I'd throw this out there... I was at the book signing yesterday and was impressed by the number of people who showed up.  I managed to be in the first ten in line, and it was worth the wait.

FYI on the reporter girl... I hope the article turns out, since she was pretty clueless.  She didn't even know the titles of either Elantris or Mistborn when she spoke with me, and all we managed to do between me and the guy next to me was confuse her.  I hope someone else clarified for her!

Now it's time to get honest... I was a little apprehensive about what I'd be getting.  I received Elantris as a present, and although I enjoyed it, I had my complaints (don't take this wrong - I may just be picky!).  But I decided to give Mistborn a chance, and was pleasantly surprised.

I hadn't planned on even starting reading it yet, but... by 5:00 this afternoon I turned the last page.  Wow!  Definitely worth waiting in line!  I believe this is a much more polished novel than Elantris (I'm not putting down Elantris, rather I'm praising heartily Mistborn).  The characters are more real, more fleshed out.  The level of detail is outstanding.  The premise is definitely unique, and well thought out as well as presented.

Be proud of yourself; I see a bright future for this trilogy, given such a good start.

To clarify some line issues: I got there at 4:10 and was about 14th in line (and got book #31 for E). The girl who got in line right behind me said that she had arrived at 3:30 and there was no line, so she went shopping for a while rather than start one. That directly contradicts what EUOL's former student said about getting there at 11:00, so take it with a grain of salt.

And Steve: please send photos to E, he's our usual photo hoster.

Fell,

Marianne (one of my students) said she got there at 11:00.  She was the first one in line.  Another woman soon after her said she'd been waiting from 2:00 on.  I wasn't there, obviously, but those two DID say such things.  (And the manager mentioned Marrianne's arrival, though he placed it at around 10:00.)

im glad most people had a great time!  it's a lot of work to set up something like this, so it feels really good to have it turn out well.

We have had people coming in yesterday and today to pick up thier copies, so i fully expect to sell out of the 220 copies we ordered within a month.  I wont tell you how many of each book we sold, cause i may get in trouble for that (private compant info and all).

To clarify it all, there was one person in line almost the whole day.  The line started really building at about 3:30 to 4:00 (filled the area infont of Spencers next door to our store).  At about 4:30 and on is when we had to make the secondary line that most people were in.  Hopefully i did an ok job of pullin you guys in without ruffling any feathers!

We still have copies of the book left - although they are going fast.  If anyone still wants one or NEEDS one, com on in.

Steve

Well, I went to Mansfield today to get a copy.  I actually checked Waldenbooks in the mall and they did not have it - the lady behind the desk said it was not out yet according to her computer. (I said, that's funny, since the release party was this weekend!)

I was going to go to B&N anyway since I had $14 in store credi to help defray the cost.  They had two copies there, and they weren't even in the "new science fiction" section!  They were on the shelf beside all the paperback Elantris-es. Well, now they only have one other copy, so I hope someone buys it soon.   :)

Brandon, i'm just going to ship it out to you and include return postage, could you PM  or email me a shipping address for you?

Amazon tells me that my copy is in the mail.  :) Unfortunately, Amazon says that I won't get the book until August 5th.  :( Amazon claims that it is being shipped through USPS (sent on July 22) but USPS claims that it hasn't received it yet. It think somebody in Amazon's shipping warehouse is reading my copy before it gets sent.

When I said "take it with a grain of salt" I was referring to the times mentioned by the girl next to me in line, not the student you had talked to, EUOL. I readily believe that people were there since 11.

You folks at Walden Books (Diamante and all others) deserve a big hip-hip-hoorah for all the work you did to bring Mistborn to the fans a few days earlier than the intended street date.  The event was well-planned, well-organized, and a lot of fun.

Fell,

Wasn't challenging, just giving the sources on my info, which were ambiguous.

Fuzzy,

Everyone,

Yeah, book doesn't come out officially until tomorrow.  However, some stores ignore things like that.  Others are very strict.  Go figure.  The signing we did was an officially-sanctioned (by Tor) pre-release.

Amazon emailed that they already shipped mine, which is nice.  My delivery estimate is the 27th-29th, though.   I hope it comes at the early end so that I have something to read on my flight this weekend!

Well, as with Lost one, I also have to wait until August to get mine. Don't know why. It bugs me that they don't give a reason. I can understand waiting till the official release date, but two weeks after? Seems odd.

Yeah so I'll be at the Aug. 12 booksigning with a friend (hopefully, we still need to work out logistics though). I'm the kid with the long poofy hair, and I will eventually get around to that hate mail you told me to send you. Just not right now.

He posts his signing schedule on his website. I think the next closest will be in Provo on the 22nd (at BYU).
