Title: More for BrandonSanderson.com downtime thread
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on June 12, 2006, 06:26:34 PM
This page has an error for me in the upper left corner (it says include("sidebar/rightsideba
http://www.brandonsanderson.com/book.php?id=2&section=10

There are also things on that page Brandon might want to add content for (release date, etc.)

Never did figure out how to edit those little book boxes, Sprig.  Is there a way to do it?

thought there was.  Maybe I didn't include it.  I know there's a space in the Database for them.  I don't see a place for them either so I'll look into it more after work.

There is an error on the "Harmonical" blog entry, http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog.php?date=1150873200
http://www.devilducky.com/media/10119/ needs to have a closing " after it in the source.

In the Deleted Scenes section, I'm seeing a lot of garbage characters for curly quotes. I can't get them to go away by using any of the character encoding options. (This is IE on Windows 2000.)

I'm seeing text like this:

?I?m not convinced it was Domi?s will that took him away from us, uncle,? Sarene said over her wine. ?I?m growing increasingly convinced that it wasn?t His actions so much as someone elses.?

Sigh.
Fixed now.  There is funkyness with IE and smart quotes.  I didn't notice since I was on firefox.

Sprig, is there anything that can be done about this?

Smart quotes suck and should be removed via find and replace before posting.

Dang!  Forgot that. Why is it that these browsers all have so much trouble with smart quotes?

Okay, fixed.  Thanks for the heads up, Ookla.  The problem is, Firefox can read them--and that's what I use--so I have trouble remembering that I need to do this because when I check the page, it looks okay.

Sprig--I think that the browsers, actually, suck for not reading them right.  IE particularly.  I mean, if Word is going to stick them in automatically, you'd think that the MS browser would read them correctly.

Smart quotes are misnamed. They are, in fact, quite stupid.

Like most things having to do with Office (though to be fair thats mostly witht the earlier versions, they have smartened up a bit now).

I like smart quotes--the problem here is really with text encodings, which are quite stupid as it took entirely too long for everyone to settle on Unicode.

The only real issue I have with smart quotes is that when you have an abbreviation like 'em (for "them"), smart quotes by default make the apostrophe point the wrong way, as if it were a left single quote.

Oh, by the way, in the deleted scenes, you might want to change "Die?" "No, die remover." to "Dye?" "No, dye remover."

I mean, I know you're posting drafts, but it's kind of confusing. ;)
