Title: New CDs
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on September 05, 2003, 11:18:15 PM
So I was at the mall (rant to be posted elsewhere), and I saw Kemp Mill Records was going out of business, everythign 50% off.

So I look for a few bands, Mark Whitfield, Bela Fleck, The Cure, The Kinks, Hepcat, and Bad Manners were all gone, naturally, all being too popular and/or obscure for there to be any stock left on these. Only the latest U2 album was left, adn I wasn't sufficiently motivated to purchase.

However, I did walk away with 4 CDs.
A Matthew Sweet compilation of his early stuff
Rush, Vapor Trails (yeah, it was about time I got around to that one)
Sheryl Crow's latest
And a TMBG CD. I can't remember the name. Not even sure why I got it, as i think I actually purchased most of the tracks from some website on mp3. <shrug> It's a good 'un at least.

As I left the mall I only regretted that I didn't grab a copy of Eric Clapton's "Riding with the King," a duet effort with B B King which I know to be excellent. But I'm poor and shouldn't have really bought the 4 I got, so I'll live.

I really liked the "Riding with the King" single.

My most recent purchases are the two Blue Man Group CD's.  I like them both, though the first is the superior album.

Well, I haven't been able to get a good listen in on that Rush one yet (I was at work, and haven't brought them home). But I have thoughts on the others (but not enough for a review)

They Might Be Giants, Mink Car. I was really pleased to hear this one. While I think that "You'll Dance to Anything" by the Dead Milkmen does a better job mocking the club scene than the song from this album "Man, it's So Loud in Here," I thought the album as a whole was much better. The sound and production is much more like the pre-John Henry sound that made us all fall in love with TMBG in the first place, and they've stopped pretending that anyone playing on the album besides the Johns are part of the band.

Matthew Sweet - The songs on this CD are definitely inferior to his Girlfriend work and later (I'm a huge fan of 100% Fun and Blue Sky on Mars) it was still nice to hear some origins. I didn't know he and Michael Stipes had recorded together.

Sheryl Crow - C'mon, C'mon. Again, I think this is inferior to her other work (though she's still the hottest chick in her 40s that i know of). Still, I enjoy the album, even if not as much as her original album. I don't necessarily recommend it, unless you're a fan.

I'd have to pick Demi Moore over Sheryl Crow, despite the distasteful Ashton Kutcher association.

1- Demi Moore + Music? I didn't know she did music too? You're kidding though right?

2- I like John Henry. I also heard that Mink Car was a bit weak. But then again what do people know about TMBG?

I think he means for hot. I'm still voting Crow and lending Fell's opinion no credence, as he like Nicole Kidman.

I liked John Henry too, but it was a VERY different sound with much more pop sensibility than any previous work. Factory Showroom continued that trend. Mink Car moves back to their roots. So yeah, it sounds weaker because it's two guys seeing what sounds they can make instead of writing songs with 3 other guys in mind and just worry about performance.

So I'm listening to John Linnell's "Utah," and boy is it a good one. It was good.

This is all due to a nice program they had created called the "TMBG Clock Radio." Its really cool, and really free. Just head over to www.theymightbegiants.com and download the clock. Get it.

OK SE. Who has an unrequited love for TMBG? Ya, so leave the bustnuting to me. Buster, running in on my turf will ya.

uh... you've seen them HOW many times?

You have how many of their CDs?

You have how many duplicate copies of the same recordings on CD?

Ok, now let's stop this "who's bigger stuff" alone, cuz I'll smack you down. TMBG has always been one of my "big 4" even when the rotation has changed.

Hey, they're my only one. I listen to nothing else. Unless someone else is playing it, since then I can't change it. And I have countless doubles, even triples on CDs, on my hard drive. Everywhere. I've only seen them once because I cannot travel as much as I'd like to.

And I will not drop this topic. I started it, and I'll finish it.

If you listen to nothing else then you automatically lose, because the lack of comparison lends your opinion no credence whatsoever.

You try living in a dorm room where on your floor all they play is loud rap music. All you hear is thump thump thump. Then some stupid lyrics that are so stupid you want to shove a large heated rod through your innards.

Now who loses?!!

Still you, I guess, if that's where you live. Must be rough. Try to track down a copy of "The Three Little Pigs" by LL Cool J, and play that as loud as you can. That ought to cause a disturbance.

copies on your hard drive don't count. I have hundreds of mp3s. I'm talking about CDs you've bought. HAve you deliberately gone to used record stores with no other thought than to find an old TMBG ep that you already have all the tracks from on another CD? Do you have any of their albums on vinyl?

this is funnny. Like it *matters* who's the bigger fan. "I'm a bigger nerd fanboy than you!"

Well, I just went out and bought three new CDs the other day.

Kraftwerk - Radioactivity - An old disc, but I found it, and I want to get everything Krafty I can. It's really ambient, and only works as a production in itself, not individual tracks. I alos now like the track "Antenna" having heard it in context.

Benny Benassi Presents the Biz- Hypnotica - A brand new disc, but I got it for fifteen bucks, which is a great deal. I saw a clip of theirs on TV the other day and so looked for the album. It's very Devo-esque, although the voices are very MC Hawking. I originally found the ideas presented by the lyrics/music to be very similar to Devo, but then I found them to be more like Utah Saints.

Kraftwerk- Tour de France - The latest one is very good. It proves that even in 2k3, with all the funky soudns they can easily do, Kraftwerk are still able to produce interesting, original, intelligent music. With the whole man/machine thing its pretty easy to see how the bike race fits in - to win, you must combined perfection of man and perfection of machine. In any case, I'm impressed. I particularly liked the track "Vitamin".

Also, the copy protection on Tour de France is really, really pathetic - you can rip the tracks as normal with EAC.

And how much did those run ya?

In Australian Dollars:

$25 for each of the Kraftwerks
$15 for the Benny Benassi

A total of about $65, but I didn't pay for one of the Krafts. So basically I'm down $40. Not a bad deal.

in USD, that's about twenty bones. Not bad for two OR three cds.

Bones? Are we getting confuse with the meaning of USD or USDA or whatever again? Because I think what I paid should  at least be worth something with meat on it.
