Title: What are you listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on May 10, 2003, 01:53:30 PM
You can post your favorite album here, but I'm more interested in what you happen to be listening to the moment you post here and how you feel about that song/album/station. Post each time the mood strikes you.

I have the Soup Dragons "Hang-Ten!" on. This is the album released about 3 years before their "hit" "Lovegod" (with the famous "Free"). I like it. It's a lot more Indy and doesn't try as hard. Definitely much better than the post "Lovegod" releases. The song "Head Gone Astray" (one of the best on the album) just finished. The best song on the disc is "Man About Town with Chairs," an instrumental "based on the original short story" (I couldn't tell you what story). It gets a thumbs up for anyone interested in a group of guys just trying to have fun with a piano, a guitar, a bass, and drums.

Let's see, I'm actively listening too---

Wilco: Being There, Their best before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

The Who: Quadrophenia, as it rarely if ever leaves the changer

Frank Black: self titled, post pixies, pre-crappy

My Morning Jacket: mix cd, I just found out about this band a few months ago and they have quickly become one of my favorites.

Bob Dylan: Blonde on Blonde, One of the greatest albums ever recorded, period

Daft Punk: Discovery, the best thing to listen to before going to any type of party.

I love the lyrics. Don't know why. Great tune in general.

I gave my wife a CD of classical piano tunes for Mother's Day. That's what we're listening too. The pianist is actually pretty good, which isn't common on collections of concert music like this. So I guess I made a good purchase.

Right nwo the mp3 playing is Shonen Knife's "Banana Chips" Japanese girl pop-punk rock. Lots of fun, amusing, and no depth. I recommend it.

erg... remind me not to ride in your car, but greetings to another Greater DC Metropolitan area time waster.

I've got Placebo's "Every You Every Me" on winamp right now. I don't know why, but the vocals for this band really grip me. They're that sort of alternative/punk sort of tinge, but with a very unique brand. I love it.

Lately my Winamp list has become filled with songs from Rasputina.  Never thought I'd hear an electric cello used the way they do.  Fun, if creepy, stuff.

In my car this morning I listened to a CD that my twelve year-old sister made me to commemorate my engagement.  She called it "Loco Love Songs" and it has tracks from the Bee-Gees, Alicia Keys, Good Charlotte, The Beatles, and Brak (to name just a few.)  I don't know how this will affect me.

Telemann's "Quartet 1 in D" for guitar. Kevin Perkins performing. He's not my favorite performer, but he's pretty good. and there's a nice ambiance with the guitar.

Well After listening to this CD about 4 times I'm pretty disapointed.  Bring me to life is the best song and none of the others come close to that one.  It's just an adverage CD with one good song.

I've listened to the 60-second demos they have an their website, and yeah, their normal stuff is pretty tame. Not lame, necessarily, just tame. They should co-write with 12 Stones more often.

Still, right now I have a mix of the best songs from P.O.D.'s Satellite, Linkin Park's Meteora, and the one Evanescence song. They all go well together.

Title: Re: What are you listening to?

"In New York" is perhaps the worst song on that CD.  Perhaps one of the most worthless U2 songs ever, in my opinion.   Sad really, because that's the best CD they've had out in a long time.

Yeah, I liked that one. However, currently, Winamp has chosen for me to listen to Blondie's classic "One Way or Another" which I downloaded in a gleeful fit of insanity (alsong with several other Blondie hits) after watching a Muppet Show rerun where Blondie sang "The Rainbow Connection" in a duet with Kermit. Ahh... the Muppet Show...
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: stacer on May 20, 2003, 02:56:32 PM
My favorite Muppet Show of all time was when Paul Simon came on. Gonzo sings to Paul in his dressing room one of his own creations, "For Yoooooouuuu." "For you, I'd fry my legs and eat them too, wash my hair in sticky glue...." etc. Hilarious. He also calls Paul's guitar a clarinet right after claiming he's "musically educated." If you haven't seen it you have to. They also do a hilarious skit with Paul and the Muppets in medieval garb and Paul singing "Scarborough Fair" with the Muppets doing their normal antics all around him. As usual, somebody says something about pigs that Piggy takes the wrong way and "hi-ya!" she gets them and causes chaos.

Okay, so it's a common thread for the Muppets, but they have a way of making it hilarious every time.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on May 20, 2003, 07:38:51 PM
I don't ever tire of the muppet's antics.  Especially Sam the Eagle and Lou Zealand.  The bit players are the funniest to me.

Back to music though.  This thread inspired me to download "The Rainbow Connection" which I'm currenlty listening to.

I'm listening to Meteora, which Sprig kindly loaned to me.

It's too bad to hear about that Evanescence CD.  Most of the reviews have been lukewarm.  It was still number six on the charts this week, though.  All the reviews warn not to expect NuRock, except Bring me to Life.  Maybe I'll have to borrow it from you, Sprig.

Just finished "Boys Better" by the Dandy Warhols. What can I say about them? They're dark, they're odd, but they're fun. don't recommend them to everyone, but if you want to try something different, check 'em out.

Now on Winamp "Leave My Kitten Alone" by the Beatles. Ah... pre-Yoko Beatles. <sigh>

"Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway" by Al di Meola. He also has a song with a similar title "... on a Turkish Highway."
Al does jazz-rock fusion guitar. He's quite good and I recommend listening to any of his tracks.

They Might Be Giants. Anything by them. It's all good in that neighborhood. Songs like "Puttin' On the Ritz" or "O Tannenbaum" all make for some crazy tunes. I swear if I had never heard of this band then I'd still be whom I am, but to maybe a lesser degree. But who knows.

There's also Five Iron Frenzy and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

I'm listening to Shakira - Objection (Tango), but I've got "Fire Fight"/"Bang Bang" by Ramstein running through my head.

With my limited knowledge of German, some of their songs can be rather depressing, but still the beauty of it makes me want to find EUOL, and beg him to let me borrow some. Or maybe Brenna wouldn't mind. . .

I love They Might Be Giants!  I saw them live last year and it was a genuine hoot-nanny.

If you all are looking for something extremely creepy...and I mean freakishly so...check out Current 93's Faust.  Spooky stuff, great for horror gaming.

i've seen them twice. ~Apollo 18 (before the band) and ~john Henry (with the band). I must admit that while they had some clever bits, and I enjoyed the performance of "Spy" and they had an all around tighter sound, I enjoyed the earlier concert better, when it was just the Johns and come recorded tracks. their "Ana Ng" was FURIOUS and incredibly intense (they invited opener Otis Ball onto the stage and he did a very good Jimi Hendrix, everything but burning the guitar...). They just had something there.

Oh, and maybe it was because we (meaning just a couple of us who were bold) were able to a) play John's guitar, b) pilfer the stage for artifacts, and c) speak with John F. for a bit and get him to sign several T-shirts. But then again, it might also just have been high school enthusiasm and novelty.

I'll give the John Henry concert this as well: I found a twenty on the floor, which got me a really nice TMBG hat (which I then had stolen from me at BYU, but I'm not bitter)

They're a good show either way, i just like the old band better.

Right now I have J Mascis and the Fog on. He's that guy from Dinosaur Jr and Porno for Pyros. I dig his vocal stylings. this whole album is worth it.

Well, I changed my CD's (or, actually, switched playlists on my car MP3 player) so I thought I'd mention it.  Now I'm listening to a randomized playlist of:

1) Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon
2) System of a Down, Toxicity
3) Moby, Play
4) Queen, Greatest hits disc II.

I'll tell you, the combination of trippy mellowness, thrasher Nu Metal, house, and 80's pop/rock is very, very interesting...
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 06, 2003, 12:32:04 AM
Trippy. when I design a playlist, I usually thematize it. At home though, I just throw everything into one long list (http://www.thelemur.net/music/) (that's outdated by 4 or 5 months, btw).

Right now Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet are playing "customized." It's one of their more memorable, but not necessarily best songs. If you don't know who the Shadowy Men are, I pity you.

I've actually been listening to Sacred Spirits fairly regularly.  It was a CD put out by the Something-Or-Other Fund to raise money for underpriveledged Native American kids.  It's traditional American Indian songs, arranged with modern beats.  Kinda weird, but I listened to the stuff constantly while I was in New Mexico and it's stuck with me.

I bought the Evanescence album (Fallen) and Linkin Parks Meteora album today. Fallen is wierd. Not metal, closer to classical with vocals - awesome vocals i think. Since i like classical music, thats cool. Its like a lot of music i like, it puts me in mind of the WoD and Tolkiens elves; haunting stuff that is filled with a sense of loss.  Perfect for putting on during a White Wolf RPG session.

And Meteora is just the pure mosh stuff i like. Loud, hard, powerful.

So I happened upon myself at the mall last night, was in that Fye store that has DVDs CDs and a few other types of paraphanalia. I was browsing the CDs, taking notice I had only $14, and went straight to the T's. To find what? Well a TMBG CD of course. Instead I hadn't enought for such overpriced CDs and instead found one for $5.99. So I took it to the listening place, listened, liked it, and bought it. "Go Kart vs the Corporate Giant" is the name of the CD. Its just a collection of the record labels bands, has 30 songs on it, and was priced at what CDs should be priced. Now for something complete.

Alright, I've taken another listen through to the CD. And its pretty good. I believe its mostly punky/grungey sorts of sounds. Let me list the bands on it:

Capture the Flag
The Control
Daycare Swindlers
Guff
Toxic Narcotic
I Farm
Pseudo Heros
Manda and the Marbles
G.B.H
Two Man Advatage
Heads vs. Breakers
Carukers
Revolution Summer
Justin Sane
INDK
Sick of the Bus
Brothers of Conquest
Anti-Flag
Icons of Filth
Lunachicks
Bantam
The Hellbenders
46 Short
Plan a Project
Leftover Crack and
Star Strangled Bastards.

And there are only 4 bands that have a 2nd song on the CD. So overall its a pretty good CD. Plus I must say, hearing a chicks voice is something that soothes me even more. I wish there were more chicks that sang stuff that I like. None of that Enya/Celine Djion/Spears junk. The female I speak of is from the band "Manda and the Marbles." Adendum: There is another FemBand, Bantam is its name. Sweet sweet nectar.

So if you have a $10 bill on hand and are in a CD store, try to find this one. "Go Kart vs the Corporate Machine 3."

I'm listening to a mix my friend put together with songs ranging from violin performances by Itzhak Perlman Annie Lennox's "Love Song for a Vampire" which is not what I would have expected to Poe, whom I had never heard before, but think is really cool. All in all it is a very interesting compilation.

Yeah, sup with that. "Everything About You" is hardly comparable to most songs on that list. I also really dislike be beegees (said with a hard "g" a la Space Ghost).

I'm listening to the "Innocent Eyes" album by Delta Goodrew. It's ever so slightly too pop (as opposed to classical) so i reckon it was a bad purchase.

I'm listening to the 50th anniversary Jim Croce cd, a 2-cd set of songs that I'd mainly never heard before, but there are some hidden gems in there. He really liked prison songs, old American folk, that sort of thing. Right now "Careful Man" is on.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 soundtrack. It is like crazy go nuts in my mouth. Without all the popping and scaring people. This thing sure is something else. Of course I wish that the case would of came with it, but thats what I get for finding it on half.com and not reading the whole entry until upon further examination. But I am not without fail! For it is a good soundtrack!

"Hooch" by Everything. Those of you in Utah may recognize them, as that song got pretty popular for a while, and did well on "Adult Contemporary" stations for a while. I listen because they're out of Annandale, VA, and the guitarist is a Mormon (ok, a really inactive one) and the brother of a former roommate (and a co-worker of Tage's).

Oh, and then the song ends and I get Morphine's "Super Sex" heh. I have no explanation for that song.

I just finished watching/listening to G&S' great The Pirates of Penzance, and on top of Kevin Kline's amazing performance, I remembered exactly how many GREAT songs there are in that play. Pirate King, Major General, Tarantara, Paradox, and one of the most hilariously shouted "NO SOUND AT ALL! WE DON'T SPEAK A WORD!" etc. heheh, yeah.

Quiet you!

It's an Operetta. Not a musical.

Plus it's more manly. It's about pirates, and only about love tangentally. Plus it's a satire.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?

Saint, are there other musicals that you like?

My husband can't stand musicals, so maybe he might like Penzance too....

Hmm
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on November 26, 2003, 03:45:50 PM
Pirates of Penzance is easier to take because it doesn't take any time out to be "artsy" like Singin' in the Rain or a hundred others do. When it is artsy, it's purely satire, at least in my favorite version (starring Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, and Angela Landsbury), where they make references to Elvis and some other pop by using echoes and such. when Mabel does her major virtuoso solo, Fredrick is getting frustrated because he's trying to kiss her. Every time she pauses, he leans in, but then she starts.

Now: there IS artsy stuff. Kevin Kline does some amazing dance stuff, as do the policemen, but it's FUNNY. More like Danny Kaye than Fred Astaire.

Anyway, I think that Guys and Dolls is a passable musical, but that's partially because I saw it with my wife at the Kennedy Center. And I enjoyed Les Mis, though the novel (especially if you can cut out 50 page descriptions of the layout of the Battle of Waterloo and the whole sewer/bowels metaphor) was far superior.

I don't hate musicals as much as I sound like I do. It's just really easy to mock Fell that he is "out of the closet" about his musical liking.

But if he doesn't like musicals, it may just be a macho thing, and you may never get him over it.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on November 26, 2003, 05:46:49 PM
It's not a macho thing with him- he just cannot accept people bursting into song for no reason.   The singing interrupts his watching of the show, therefore it always annoys him and he doesn't enjoy watching musicals.  I just can't understand it, because in *my* reality it's perfectly normal to burst into song at any moment.  (I think it's partly my psyche, and partly being raised on Sesame Street).

He did, however, enjoy Moulin Rouge and Chicago, so I figure there has to be *some* hope.

I forced him to watch Joseph & the Technicolor dreamcoat, and while he laughed from time to time, he didn't particularly like it.

I also forced him to watch The Sound of Music, because he'd never seen it, and in my book that's criminal.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on November 26, 2003, 06:40:06 PM
Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables are operettas as well.

And fuzzy, maybe he would like operettas better because no one "bursts" into song, they are always singing.

I made my husband sit down and watch Gone With the Wind, despite his tragic experience with the book in 8th grade where his teacher tried to convince the class that Scarlett was this amazing hero (huh ???). He liked it a little better as I pointed out that GWtW is more like a Greek Tragedy, but mostly because I was free to admit that Scarlett is no hero.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Fellfrosch on November 26, 2003, 09:29:33 PM
You've got to pick the right musicals, where the songs are an extension of the talking rather than a randomly-inserted dance number. Phantom of the Opera, though it tries to integrate song into story, isn't going to win any fans over to musicals.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?

Hrm... I hadn't thought of it that way, but I think you're at least partially right, Fell. It does help explain my choices.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: stacer on November 27, 2003, 01:28:48 PM
Funny thing is, much as I'm a fan of musicals, I prefer conversational music, too, over the random-dance-number bit. Though I also love Gene Kelly and Judy Garland with all my heart, random or not. Most of the songs in Meet Me In St. Louis, for example, are part of the storyline, as opposed to Singin' in the Rain, in which that 20-minute dream sequence in the middle is only mildly related to the plot, as it's the characters' descriptions of what should happen in the movie.

I think of watching musicals sort of the way I think of fantasy: suspension of disbelief. These people live in an alternate universe in which ideas are expressed through song half the time, and in which sometimes the entire community knows the song of one's heart.  ;D

I love musicals, though I have to say that Fred Astaire is my favorite.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on November 27, 2003, 06:56:36 PM
See, it's not suspension of disbelief for me.  I firmly believe in a world where people sing at random times for any reason at all.  I LIVE in a world where that happens, much to the amusement of my husband.  Therefore musicals are usually fine for me.

ok, i know this sounds weird, but whenever I watch a musical, I always catch myself thinking, "How do they all know the same words and tune to this song?" (they being the characters, not the actors)
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on November 30, 2003, 09:21:10 PM
I've decided something.  Somebody needs to turn 2001: A Space Oddessy into a musical.  This would be excellent for several reasons.

1. Random songs would fill in the annoying 20 minute blocks in the movie where there is no dialouge and no music.  I hate the movie because of this.

2. Songs would contain lyrics explaining everything, therefore making it a comprehensible story instead of a drug trip on a high budget.

3. There would have to be a love interest.  How they would work it into the story would be amusing to see.

HAL: "The space probe from the moon is messing with my mind- I think I'll kill the crew because there's nothing here to find!"
---

Chorus:  "Weeeee're... Going on a drug trip to another dimension, who knows what we'll see or what scary things we'll find!  We're going on a drugh trip to another dimension, (or maybe we're not and we've all just lost our mind!)
"First we're standing in a corner of weird and creepy room, then we're looking at ourselves and filled with a sense of doom.  Are we sitting, are we standing, are we lying in a bed?  Have we regressed to being born or are we simply dead.?"

I'd give just about anything to have the end of that stupid movie just make some kind of sense.  I'm told that reading the book helps, but I'm terrified to find out.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on December 01, 2003, 01:56:36 PM
fuzzy--I'll ask my dad, since he owns the movie and has read the book. I remember him saying something along the lines of "If you watch the movie without reading the book, it will not make any sense. If you read the book and then watch the movie, you will be bored."

Very clever lyrics.

Saint--I always wonder how they all know the same dance steps.

So I say to you, stereotypes only come in mono. It isn't fun, so maybe turn the volume on your bass down, and turn the treble up.

I really like john Henry (e.g. listening to it right now), as well as their older stuff. And their new stuff. One reason I don't have a favorite is because I like all of it. There is nothing that I can say I don't like. My neighbor friend though, he has a different opinion about it, which I am trying to convert. I never knew the inquisition had it so hard at the beginning. Other thoughts to come once remembered or thought up.

I do absolutely adore "Absolutely Bill's Mood." That one gets my ticker in a fancy.

Well, since I couldn't find the Willow soundtrack at my local retailer of all things unfarily priced, I instead found "The Original Dueling Banjos."

My thoughts on banjos. Banjos can make anyone happy no matter how sad they are. If you object to this, then you are an even bitter person than some of the most bitter people alive or dead today.

This album is of the most excellence. Much banjoing goes on, along with fiddles. There may be other instruments, but I can't tell all that well. So, in the so and so, I like this one. And so can you.

The same theme gets repeated a lot, which makes it hard to listen to on repeat (of the CD). But I think you're right EUOL. It seems like everybody now releases soundtracks with pop bands singing songs that have little to do with the movie. Sad, and yet you can sometimes get good collection of songs.

I brought in a few of my favorites and listening to them roughly Chronologically. First was Greatest Hits, which is entirely recordings from the first 3 or 4 years otheir career. I should have brought in the EP collection I have, which is essentially the same thing, but with less interesting liner notes (which I don't  have time to read right now anyway) and a slightly more comprehensive song collection.

Now I'm on Something Else By The Kinks. (Oh how I wish I could be like David Watts) which has a lot of classic Kinksness including "Death of a Clown" (yay Dave!) and Waterloo Sunset. Again, I was tempted to bring in something else that would be more comprehensive (namely Kronikles), but I like this album by itself without getting wrapped up in whether some songs on Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround were worth including. (Yeah, I know none of you have any idea what I'm talking about, but take them as recommendations).

I also brought Arthur, Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire. Following on the tradition of The Who and even Pink Floyd in doing a "concept" or story album, this one was also actually taped and televised at production time (it worked for them too, they later did Percy and Preservation, both of which were produced on screen or stage). It starts to show Ray's absorbtion in his nationalism yet existential ennui, which he seems to believe extends to his whole nation. The title character ends up moving to Australia.

Finally, I brought Muswell Hillbillies, in which we see the Kinks trying to LOOK like Credence Clearwater Revival, but sound like... well... not anything else. More ennui, but in a more humorous way and it's pre-Chrissy Hynde marriage/break up, from which, as far as I can tell, he never recovered from. Includes the notable Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues, 20th Century Man, (together which must have had SOME influence on King Crimson's song) and the title track, which must have influenced Eddie Vedder's angst at being famous.

What's cool about the Kinks is partially how much they anticipate later alternative trends: the absorbtion in wondering what tech will do to us without being SF anticipates a lot of punk and alternative, not the least of which includes Bad Religion and Orgy, and grunge as a whole. They also, esp. going into the 80s, have a lot of archetypal melodies and rhythms that feel familiar the first time you hear them without actually being stolen from anywhere.

Yes, I'm a fan. How did you tell?

Cliar

Bought them when I was in Scotland and can't get enough of them, though they don't seem to be known outside Scotland (Ent, you heard of them?). They're Scottish folk, fiddling and piping and tin whistle kind of stuff, and they sing in Gaehlig (or however the Scots spell it). Traditional tunes and mouth music, and new songs that sound traditional. Kind of in the same line as Kate Rusby, who I also highly recommend, a Yorkshire singer who's married to a Scot in her band, John McCusker, who's also a great instrumentalist and composer in his own right.

Do you mean Gaelic?
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: stacer on January 09, 2004, 06:02:26 PM
No, Scots Gaelic is spelled differently. There's a D or an H in there somewhere and I can never remember where. It's a different dialect, some say almost a different language. It's what they speak up on the Hebrides, upper highlands, etc. (in addition to English), and many roadsigns are in both languages with the movement to bring the language back. I found a Scots Gaehlig (that looks right) station on the radio when I was there. Unless it was coming over from Ireland and was Irish Gaelic, which is possible, because I was on the western coast.

Three new discs:

Kraftwerk -  Trans-Europe Express: great, but I've already got 90% of it on other discs.

Kraftwerk - The Man Machine: Brilliant, once again I've already got most of it, bit it includes three tracks I havn't heard before. Space Lab, Metropolis, and The Man Machine. Space lab is cool, Metropolis if Fantastic, and a counterpoint to Neon Lights. As such, this was a good purchase.

Marco Zaffarano - Minimalism: I'm listening to this now.  Rather good. It's minimalist techno, that seems to be ingeniusly minimalist in that it isn't just minimal techno, but it's minmal minimal techno, stripped down so much that it isn't so much listening to minimal techno as getting the *impression* of listening to minimal techno.

The rediscovery was spurned on by a watching of Donnie Darko where they do that amazing cover of "Mad World"

Schroeder's Greatest Hits.

Yeah, BMG got me to buy half a dozen CDs from this line of concert music by just putting a Peanuts character on the cover of a CD collecting piano music. Of course, at first they only got me to buy the one disc, but they did a good job of it, so I bought "TV Classics," "Classical Music for Home Improvements," "Pachabel's Cannon and Other Baroque Hits," "Classics Greatest Hits" and "Vivaldi's Greatest Hits" as well.

They were a pretty decent line. Though their recording of "The Planets"  isn't as good as the one conducted by Mehta. Unfortunately, the good one was lost when I wrapped my Buick around a  tree some years ago. That made me sad. I shall go cry now.

I just picked up a copy of The Darkness's Permission to Land.  Wow. I don't know if this is supposed to be a joke or serious or what...but it's good.  The singer's high pitch is laughable at times (all in good rock 'n roll fun) but the music is great all the way through.

To put it as a comedian on VH1's The Best Week Ever: "It's like all the 80's hair bands got together and had a baby that gestated and mutated until it popped up 20 years later to rock you."

if that's the singer of the same song on the radio that I'm thinking of, then I will never trust your taste in music again. The song I'm thinking of SUCKS. now, for Jazz (as in any music) I *love* guitar. My two current favs are Al DiMeola (Jazz Fusion, but intense stuff) and Mark Whitfield (more traditional, with a mellow sound). Mark I like more, his guitar sounds well, perfect. And he's got some great tunes. His improve is very nice. I recommend his album "True Blue" most.

there are a lot of different types of jazz. What have you listened to?

Actually, not all music is for all people, but Jazz comes closest. What I should be asking is "what do you listen to music for?"
Title: Re: What are you listening to?

I listen to music as a way to escape from the chaotic thoughts constantly running through my head. I do the same thing with video games. Depending on my mood I'll listen to everything from Bad Religion, to Slipknot, to this 2 hour cd of Mozart my brother gave me.

The Jazz I've listened to is the kind my grandfather listens to. I like the sound of saxophones, but I really can't seem to get into the music. It's probably due to my lack of attention span (screw you MTV, I hate you!).

seems like fusion or bebop would be right up your ally. A lot of complex progressions, etc. They require paying attention to them to follow. That'd empty your head of all else.

I've tried to get into jazz before, but it just doesn't do it for me.  I've never been able to pick up on the progressions and exchanges that people seem to talk about.   I think I'm missing all the subtleties.  I've only listened to it live though, never sat through an album, so that could be a reason.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 06, 2004, 07:39:23 AM
wow. Live is the way it's supposed to be heard. it helps to be familiar with the repretoire, though, because than you can pick up better on when they're ragging or improvising.

Like i said, no music is for everyone, though. I recognize that being familiar with jazz before you can appreciate it can be more work than many people are willing to put in.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on February 06, 2004, 04:16:28 PM
I don't know. It kind of bored me.  Everyone takes their turn playing, rinse, wash, repeat. As a psuedo-musician myself, I think it would be fun to play in one, but I don't think I could without understanding the music more.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 06, 2004, 05:23:56 PM
they take turns playing is the key. It's not just playing. It's usually 100% improvisation. In modern jazz and later (since the late 50s or so, that is) usually when someone takes over is completely improvised as well. NOTHING is written ahead of time except hte basic chord progression, which itself can be difficult to find in some songs.  Like I said, it can be a lot of work. And if you don't love it on the first listen, it can be hard to feel like the work is worth it. Which is understandable. I don't think less of anyone for not liking jazz (though it disappoints me that my wife doesn't), but I do think that anyone who goes through the work to appreciate what's going on will find it worth it.

"Ska for Your Soul" a mix of 2nd generation ska (late 60's through the 80s) that a friend made for me while I was a missionary in his ward.

Yeah, we'll be taking the fifth on any questions about the first time I listened to it.

Anyway, I almost didn't take it to work. I thought "I don't really want to listent to that." Well, I took it, and it's all I listened to today. Nice stuff. I mean, bands like Reel Big Fish and No Doubt and Save Ferris are ok, but this second generation stuff.. nicey nicey.

The best song is See No Evil's "Ghetto Charged." Yeah. I like it like that. Though it really shows you where a lot of rap was headed right after that.
Another nice one is Maroon Town's "Nostalgia." More rap precursor (which really makes sense that the stuff that came out that goes on the alt rock stations is more punk than ska), but looking at what he did in the 60's. What's cool is that among the things he lists most prominently are Batman, The Prisoner, Captain Scarlet, the Thunderbirds (TV show), and Dr. Who. Yeah, the SF gets more representation than other movie stars. These guys would be cool to hang with.

Anyway, it's convinced me to add some of these artists to my wish list.Get some Toasters, Neville Staples, Thae Bakesys, and Bim Skala Bim, folks. They'll show you what ska is REALLY about.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Onion of Death on February 06, 2004, 10:18:14 PM
I like ska. But that isn't really Jazz is it? If it is, it's a cross between new punk and jazz. I've always been a fan of Reel Big Fish, ever since I heard "Sell Out" when I was like 10.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on February 06, 2004, 10:20:16 PM
Reel Big Fish ruined "Take On Me" for me, as I like their version much better and now I hate the original.

Ok, so maybe that's not the definition of 'ruined'.  But whenever I hear A-Ha sing it I'm like, "No!  Where's the beat!  You need a beat!"
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 07, 2004, 02:28:13 AM
No, it's definitely not jazz. I was returning to the original subject of the thread. RBF's version of "Take On Me"is fun but a bit weak, imo. It's all camp, and it's a good song in its own right.

If you just need a beat, there's a good techno remix of A-Ha's recording.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on February 10, 2004, 10:09:55 PM
Well I've started back up watching VH1 in the mornings before I leave home,  (I have good reasoning, if anyone's curious why)  And so I have this song stuck in my head which I'm sure I would not under any other circumstances.   It's by Katy Rose, who is one of these blonde, "I'm 20 but look like 15-year-old jailbait" singers.  Very mainstream; her song is called "Overdrive" - very unremarkable, with a semi-catchy chorus, in a minor key.

Chorus: "Yeah-ah, I'm independant,
              yeah-ah, I'm borderline
              yeah-ah, I'm California
My heart's all spinning upside down,
              but my heart's in overdrive."

Now the reason I'm mentioning this, is bedcause this is sthe first time I've heard California referred to as an abstract concept.  If you know of other instances let me know, but the chorus of a cookie-cutter punk/pop song is not where I expect to hear this kind of thing.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 10, 2004, 10:15:54 PM
I'm sure you have a very good reason.

I also like how a top 40 style singer insists she's "independent" and "borderline."

What about "California Dreaming?"
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on February 11, 2004, 11:08:09 AM
I always figured California dreaming meant you were dreaming of California and the warm weather, beach, etc.  This seemed to be referring to California for it's liberal nature, independant reputation or something.

So I realize I've been living under a rock when it comes to popular and alternative music for the last 10 years. But the girl that used to work at this computer had Barenaked Ladies on her ITunes, and it never got deleted when I took over. So I've been listening, and I like it, surprisingly. It's really my kind of music. Funny, all this time I've never heard them before, or just hadn't wanted to wade through radio stations to hear that kind of music.

Title: Re: What are you listening to?

wow, I'm kind of surprised you hadn't heard of them. Not like one of my mission companions who had never heard OF the Rolling Stones. No lie. Not just that he didnt' recognize their songs or be able to sing along, he had NO IDEA who they were. It was very strange. Fortunately, he HAD heard of the Beatles, but couldn't identify anything they sang. Sad. Very sad.

So, what songs did she have? and what recommendations can I make related to this? I have a few in mind, actually, but I'll have to get home to give you full details.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: stacer on February 11, 2004, 01:28:01 PM
No, I had actually heard OF them, just not heard them. Or if I had, it was too brief to have made an impression. Her songs were from two different albums--Born on a Pirate Ship and Gordon. So far I like Hello City and Enid, but have been working at the same time and haven't been paying attention to the rest. Box Set is really funny. Here are the songs:

When I Fall
The Old Apartment
Break Your Heart
Shoebox
Same Thing
Hello City
Enid
Grade 9
Wrap Your Arms Around Me
What a Good Boy
Box Set
New Kid (on the Block)
Blame It on Me
The Flag

NOTE: Augh! I think I accidentally deleted a few last week when I was backing up my computer in case they were going to replace it. I kept a few BNL songs, but not all, because I didn't have enough room on the zip disk I was using, and the cd burner doesn't work. :-( But I do have some of these above.

I've got Rush's Vapor Trails in right now. I'd totally forgotten I'd bought this disc. But I'm glad I did.

I've also been listening to this "indie" mix I made. Not all of it is Indie by a long shot, but it's got similar tone for me. A cool, promotional semi-indie CD collection from Geffen records back in 1996. Features songs from Jawbreaker, Boss Hog, the Raincoats, and the like. On the whole, some really good tracks. The song was "If I Only Had a Brain," and it was on an album called "One Step Ahead of the Spider." I have that video on tape. Way back in the day for some reason I subscribed to a sort of record club, but instead of records, they sent video tapes with 10 current alternative rock videos on it. some of the songs are good. Others are kind of crap, so I stopped after about 3 videos.

I chose an interesting variety for today's listening. First we have King Crimson's "THRAK," along with "Presto" from Rush. For follow up we have "Joyride" by Roxette, and "Hotwire" by The Soup Dragons, followed by Sting's offering "Ten Summoner's Tales" and closed out by Soul Asylum's "Grave Dancer's Union."

Another odd assortment of CDs for this week.

Enrique Iglesias "Vivir"
Bela Fleck "Daybreak"
Morphine "Cure for Pain"
The Refreshments "Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy"
The Guitar Trio (Al DiMeola, Pasco de Lucia, and John McLaughlin)
"A Jazz Valentine" (various jazz artists)
Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack "God's Army"
"Polar Shift" (collection of "new age" performers like Steve Howe and Vangelis)

different = better

Time Flies, The Best of Synthesis (the BYU jazz ensemble). Very very cool. More accessible than a Miles Davis cd my friend lent me several weeks ago (not the one that had Porgy and Bess, a different one). I love jazz, but I don't really go for stuff without a melody. This is much more my style. Maybe fusion is an acquired taste. Evan, my friend/neighbor/home teacher/etc., loves fusion, but I haven't worked myself up to that yet I guess. We're both trumpet players, and I'd say that I'd love to play it because it's interesting technically (if I could still play well, that is), but to sit and listen is about the same as sitting and watching sports--I'd rather be playing.

James Taylor, "Fire and Rain," and "Something in the Way She Moves"

Dan Fogelberg, "Leader of the Band"

and

Van Morrison, "Brown Eyed Girl"

That song makes me want to be a brown-eyed girl so a boy would sing it to me. I'm learning to play these on the guitar, which is so fun. I've had a little spare time now that I don't have school and don't have an assignment hanging over my head, so I've been getting my guitar out more often. Good stuff.

I have brown eyes, and no one's sung it to me!  :'(

Seriously though, I've nothing to complain about. Neither my husband or I are musically gifted. I really like the U2 song with the line "a blue-eyed boy meets a brown-eyed girl" because my husband has blue eyes (not gray--blue). ;)

I've got a music compliation together on Winamp of all the CDs I've ripped to my computer at work. Includes Travis, Natalie Cole, Ace of Base, No Doubt & Vertical Horizons.

Besides, it's easy enough to change it to "blue" or "green" if you're singing it.

"Superman never made any money saving the world from Solomon Grundy."

Really it's interesting that two of the best "superman" songs in the world (excluding REM's of course) are about him becoming disaffected. As if no one could be that noble and capable. The evil eventually wears him down. Strange.

I've never listened to the full CTD album though. Maybe I should sometime "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" and "Superman Song" are the only two I know.

I'm listening to Simple Minds right now. Alive and Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, etc. Man. I like this CD.

I just got TMBG's newest EP, Indestructible Object. The CD has 5 tracks on it, one of which (Ant) is redone very well. Another one you may have heard if you've ever watched that one Medical tv show they had on TLC or the Discovery channel, or something (Am I Awake). The other three tracks (Memo to 'Human Resources', 'Au Contraire', and 'Caronline, No') are very good as well. Memo has an odd sound that I really haven't heard from TMBG, Au Contraire has to be the funnest thing about anything French I've heard in a while. And Caroline, No is a sort of slow, dancey type of song that makes you want to scream out "Why Caroline, why?!"

Now go buy it, freaks.

"Bet you never thought you'd hear Dylan with an Irish accent, did you?"

I've got the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert Collection in. All Bob Dyaln songs, performed by Ronnie Wood, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roger McGuin, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Chrissie Hynde, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Lou Reed. I *love* this album.

The best song is The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem singing "When the Ship Comes In." It's like you can't tell it's a Dylan song, not an Irish folk song. Beautiful.

ah, so the object of this question is to pick nits.
I assumed that since I originally said "Irish folk song," that my meaning of "traditional Irish folk song" would be understood, and that by abbreviating it to "folk song" that you would be preserving that meaning.

I've heard of Lords of the Rhymes (Obviously). All that nerdcore stuff rules - my favourite would have to be MC Frontalot. MC Chris rules, MC Paul Barman is hyper-intelligent. Frontalittle is really fun. Mc Hawking is great. Also some of the rap remixes by Double A Ron on VGMix.

BTW, Outkast, make sure to play some LOTR at the next social. I reckon everyone would like it, given the success of the movies.

Awesome music though, I've listened to all the soundtracks many many times.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: JP Dogberry on April 23, 2004, 08:47:37 AM
Hey, the LOTR at the social was Muldoon's suggestion. Here's the breakdown of nerdcore, don't have to bother with WinMX for most of it.

MC 900 FT Jesus - Precursor to Nerdcore. Ask SE about it, but it's commercial music, and very good.

Del the funky homosapian/ Deltron 3030 - I think the first commercial nerdcore artist. I've only heard one track, but it owned. It was called Proto- CUlture, and I could go into a page long breakdown, but suffice to say it's about Video Game cred.

MC Frontalot - The guy who invented the genre. All available free over at www.frontalot.com. My favourite, witty lyrics, and a slowish, cautious rapping style.

MC Hawking - Rapping Stephen Hawking! Available for free at www.mchawing.com, but he's currently working on releasing a CD.

Lords of The Rhymes - available free at www.lordsoftherhymes.com. You already know the deal, they rap about LOTR.

MC Chris - at www.mcchris.com you can download some tracks, and buy some cds. Ultra fast, super skileld rap, unique because of his high pitched voice, but it works. He raps about some fairly explicet stuff though.

MC Paul Barman - only a few free tracks at his website, for the rest, buy the disc. Hyper-intelligent rhymes about stuff like Politics and stuff. Be warned, he has tracks so rude (but intelligent) that make MC Chris look like a pansy.

The Frontalittle Squad - An group of internet nerdcore artists, 2nd generation, who rap about really nerdy stuff like video games. Some of my favourite stuff, available at http://frontalittle.songhole.org.

Double A Ron - Some of his stuff is at www.vgmix.com. I really really like his stuff so far. He's a christian rapper who raps over video game music remixes.

Assorted - a bunch of other ametuer rappers do nerdcore at www.vgmix.com. Also check out DJ Crono, who has stuff at www.ocremix.org.

So much new music:

White Stripes - Elephant:  Why did I wait so long to get this?  It rocks on toast.  Great variety of music and done really well.

My Morning Jacket - the entire library: I've fallen in love with this band in the last six months or so.  Just great music.

Wilco - a ghost is born: Sigh.  Wilco is my favorite band, but I just can't get into this album.  I loved Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but this evolution of the band just doesn't do it for me.  I wish they'd go back to their roots.  Being There is still their best album.

Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose:  Yep, that Loretta Lynn.  The Coal Miner's Daughter.  Jack White (of the White Stripes) produced this album and it is amazing.  It's an odd blend of garage rock and traditional country....and it works!

Guster:  Just saw these guys on tour with Ben Folds and was highly impressed.  Pretty good stuff  all around

Phish: Undermind and Junta:  One out of every four Phish songs is amazing.  The rest are just so-so.

The Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert, which I recommend to anyone who likes music to be something other than dissonant aggression. Who knows, those of you who think RATM is the pinnacle of music may learn something to. Bob himself is only on 3 or 4 of the tracks on the 2 disc set, but you get rare interpretations by Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, and the track that's on now that I can't seem to take off repeat, the Clancy Brothers. "You never thought you'd hear Dylan with an Irish accent, did you?" Man, it sounds native. That bobby boy sure as heck knew how to write a song. This track deserves enshrinement, if not the whole set.

The Eberron Soundtrack

I'm much more impressed with it than I expected to be. Of course, I didn't expect an actual orchestra but instead two keyboards and a drum machine.

Not that the album breaks any new ground musically. It uses a lot of musical clichés and some predictable movements, but it does show some talent. And it's not all cliché. Some of it is quite impressive. Though, again, much of it sounds like I've heard it before in something composed by John Williams or perhaps a horror movie. However, I have to stress that none of it is annoyingly repetitive or too familiar. The composer handles his source material well, and I think it's good mood music. It's very evocative.

I finally acquired a copy of Jimmy Eat World's self titled (formerly "Bleed American"). I don't think there's a single song on this disc that I didn't already have on mp3. However, there's also not a single song that I wouldn't love with all of my body if it were physically manifested in front of me. In the second post of this years-spanning thread I mentioned I was listening to Dylan's Blonde on Blonde and that it was one of the greatest albums ever.

Two years later, it has made it back into frequent rotation and I can't come up with a good reason I ever quit listening to it.

Sure, some people can't stand the way he sings, but it's lyrical genius.  The man can paint pictures with words an conjure images that one would never think to juxtapose.  If you buy one Dylan album, this is the one.

Sheer musical genius.

Between the five or so normal albums and their 30 years of maximum R&B boxed set, they probably take up more space on my iPod than any other one band.

Ahh the soothing tones of Morphine....

"The Night" is possibly the coolest song ever,... and most rock bands cant include wierd instruments and make it work...
It a good make out song too...

Too bad the lead singer OD'd

Morphine - The Night Lyrics
you're the night, Lilah
a little girl lost in the woods
you're a folktale
the unexplainable
you're a bedtime story
the one that keeps the curtains closed
I hope you're waiting for me
cause I can't make it on my own
I can't make it on my own

it's too dark to see the landmarks
and I don't want your good luck charms
I hope you're waiting for me
across your carpet of stars
you're the night, Lilah
you're everything that we can't see
Lilah
you're the possibility

you're the bedtime story
the one that keeps the curtains closed
and I hope you're waiting for me
cause I can't make it on my own
I can't make it on my own

sweet-ass sax solo

unknown the unlit world of old
you're the sounds I've never heard before
off the map where the wild things grow
another world outside my door
here I stand I'm all alone
driving down the pitch black road
Lilah you're my only home
and I can't make it on my own

you're a bedtime story
the one that keeps the curtains closed
I hope you're waiting for me
cause I can't make it on my own
I can't make it on my own

see, the problem here is that I couldn't fit all my music on a single iPod. I have over 400 CDs, around 200 or so albums on vinyl (plus the 45s), and 200 tapes. Then there's my songs I have only on mp3. Right now I have around 2 weeks worth of music on mp3 if I just played it straight through without stopping.

I used to love the Who. Not so much anymore. Though several of their songs consitently make it onto my playlist. I likewise became disenchanted with the Pixies. Not sure why. Maybe if I started listening again I'd be happier with them.

Dylan, on the other hand, is a musical genius. I have several of his. I'm not sure I agree Blonde on Blonde is the best, Hwy 61 Revisited has some very strong points, and my Indy nature keeps pulling me back to Desire for a great listen.

Morphine, I have everything by in at least one medium. Sheer brilliance. I cried (real tears and everything) when the singer died.

and how many hundreds of dollars is that? So how realistic is it that I'll ever have one in my hands to use it?

So maybe there IS an ipod that could do it? Sure. For now, But using the conservative number of 12 songs per album, plus all my mp3s, I have around 12-13000 songs already. By the time I have the spare funds to allocate to an ipod, I'm sure I'll easily have more than 2000 more songs. So maybe not.

Do what my friend steve does SE, he bought a CD player that reads MP3s for about $80 and just burned CDs with 800megs of songs on them.  Or me with my MD player, about 400 megs.  Sure Ipods, or the like, are nice but it's a lot of money to spend at once.

And when Jeffe or others tell you about the iPod you can point them to this comic:

unfortunately, PA has been broken since yesterday.

I'd love an iPod. I could fit a LOT on it. I don't NEED all my songs on it, I'm just saying I couldn't do that anyway.

But I can't buy one

I make the occassional mix, and I back up all my mp3s to CD every now and then (though I still lost my Too Much Joy mp3s somehow).

but finding an mp3/discman is a good idea. I can probably afford that soon.

PA is working again today, unless it just went down.  I have one of those CD players too and rarely use it anymore so I could probaly sell it to you for $50 plus shipping.  It's hold button is broken but besides that it works fine.  I bought it about 6 months before I bought my MD player and never ended up useing it for MP3s since I don't have a CD burner.

Why is it so bad of us to tell someone about a product we like to use Spriggan?
Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Spriggan on February 09, 2005, 08:39:47 AM
Becasue it's redundent now Jeffe, we all know how much you like the iPod and how much other people like it.  The product has been around for so long now we don't need to be told anymore.

Also most of us don't have iPods becsaue we either don't want one or cannot afford one, like SE, who said several times he wants one yet cannot afford it.  Despite that you kept on telling him to buy one anyway.  It would be like me constenetly telling people to get a broadband cable conncetion for the internet everytime I could fit it into a conversation, people on this board either have Broadband, or don't have it for other reasons (like cannot afford it or don't want it), and for me to keep on telling those that don't have it to get it would be really annoying.  And for those that want one, yet cannot afford it, me allwayse telling them to buy one would be like rubbing it in their face.  That's how your iPod tangents go sometimes, and that's why I liked to that comic.
Title: Re: What are you listening to?

I never told him to get one in this thread...
ever... In fact Ive only joked with him about getting one...

Pleasington brought up the ipod this time. But you assumed it was me. Saint responded that they didnt make one big enough for him and I said they did. How is that rubbing someones face in it?

Plus you should keep in mind that I know Saint IRL, I know how he lives and have an idea of what he can afford and I would never tell him to buy something like an Ipod. Im not saying he's poor, cause he isnt... just that with 3 kids an Ipod isnt the best investment.

But I do think you could lay off me a little when I dont do anything... Its like your just itching to attack me over something. (Im not saying this in a mean way)

Yeah I like the Ipod, Yeah Im gonna say how much I like it... If you dont want it or cant afford it or whatever you dont have to be mean about it.

Thats all Im asking and I dont think that thats unreasonable.

Well maybe you're not like most people but if you're being constantly reminded that you can't afford something you'd like to have, it's really depressing.

Title: Re: What are you listening to?
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on February 09, 2005, 08:15:51 PM
Ok keep in mind that I am not yelling, or ticked when I say this. My tone is light and conversational.

Its not me doing the constant reminding... which is my point.
We've had a few threads on the ipod, most of them were in the distant past (ie months and months ago) every once in a while it gets brought back up by someone (like pleasington in this thread and in the Random folder) and you know as an owner I like to respond to questions about it...

People are in fact talking about the ipod... its the single most popular music player in the world right now. If you want it and cant buy it, its not my intention to make you jealous when I talk about it. But if other people want to talk about it and coincidentally I like to talk about it. I cant help that, I like the product and I've had one long enough that I've had about all the problems that can happen to it. Im not constantly harping on it and its sort of torquing me off a little that Im getting acused of that. Like people expect me to be cruel and mean, I dont like that.

Before Pleasington brought it up in the Rants thread I hadnt said a word about it in 6 months. Unless you count podcasting which I've said about 500 times doesnt need an ipod to work or just taken the time to announce the Ipod shuffle, which I said I thought was kind of weak.
So I guess I dont get where people think Im harping on it, because I dont think I am.

I am listening to yummy!

I just got my new copy of The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (here after VGPS). I gave my dad my old copy for Christmas because it has the "Picture Book" song that's used in all those HP commercials now (I won't talk about the probable irony of that song choice). I ordered this disc BEFORE Christmas, having chosen this version because it's a reissue/remaster with 3 discs instead of one with lots of alternate versions as well as most of the songs from "The Great Lost Kinks Album" (an album that was recorded but never released anywhere). I got an email just after Christmas saying it takes a long time to get anywhere from this island off the coast of Britain, so not to respond that I hadn't received it for 28 business days. So I called last week, and they tell me it shipped on 2/11. Why it took nearly 2 months to get it in the mail is beyond me.

Anyway, I have it now, and, as I said, it is very yummy. I am pleased. Quotes about it.

It "is Ray [Davies, the lead singer/songwriter]'s masterwork. It's his Sgt Pepper, it's what makes him the definitive pop poet laureate" -Pete Townshend (of The Who)

"It's the most successful failure of all time" -Ray Davies himself. (partially because it was a major departure and it was released at the same time as Electric Ladyland and The White Album.

"It's the best album we ever made." Pete Quaife (Kinks bassist)

I concur. It is the quintessential Kinks. They've grown up since recording the frat-rock of You Really Got Me but they haven't lost contact with the real world like the strange concept album period like Preservation or A Soap Opera, and it hasn't gotten bitter like later works UK Jive and Phobia. This album is one of the things that has made me love the Kinks as my favorite band of all time.

So, I just got my copy of TMBG's "Here Come the ABC's." This is so freaking awesome. If you have kids that want to learn, then this is totally for them. Plus seeing Linell wearing a tux singing Violin with a seemingly professional violinist and celloist is just marvelous. As well, Flansy coming out in a bear costume "conducting" them on the MOP part.

Oh lordy!

Is this a DVD?

It is a CD or a DVD. Or both. Your choice.

So I'm listening to this weird Raffi song called "Banana Phone".  And I'm wondering if anyone else knows it, (like Eric).

Yeah. It was all related to a really funny flash cartoon, but that involves more swearing than I'm comfortable posting around here.  (the cartoon, not the song)

I actually have heard very little Raffi. I should make a correction to that mistake.

"To Keep My Love Alive" by Blossom Dearie
Very funny. I had AccuRadio to the "Women Who Croon" channel, because I'm actually a sucker for female vocals, esp Jazz vocals.

Weird thing though. next to Judie Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, and Julie Andrews, I found Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morrisette. Is what they do really "croonng?" V. Strange.

I'm listening to some of PartyBen's mixes.  He's got a mix of Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and Oasis's "Wonderwall" that has become extremely popular.  If you like the green day song check it out, it's really good.

He's got some other fun mixes too, like Daft Punk and Queen.  I've always been impressed by people who do this kind of thing- it takes a good ear and real creativity, IMO.

If it's the one DC101 has been playing, it's more than just those two songs.

Yes it's got quite a few other songs mixed in but I'm too lazy to list them, and the site lists all of them.

Laziness is something I can understand.

hey, Jeffe, did you listen to that free CD we picked up on Monday? Turns out that she's a pretty decent vocalist. Not the worst lyricist either, but it helps that she covered Bob Dylan on the second track.

Maire Brennan's Perfect Time. I bought the CD a few years ago, but it disappeared about a year ago. It magically reappeared yesterday.

This album can be roughly described as Celtic Christian.

Yaeh, Catholic Celts. Asidely, I'm listening to my mom's 1 GB of music on her iPod. Somehow, I'm disappointed in the vast size that isn't filled. She has all these CDs but does nothing with them. Forshamed.

Song cravings are weird.  I realized tonight that I don't have a copy of The Clash's Rock the Casbah.  And apparently I need one.

hrmmm.... I wonder what you'll see if you follow this link that will only exist for a couple days.

JP says: Bad admin! No links to MP3s.

SE I'm going to have to ask you to remove that link.  Posting links to illegal music/movies/games is a violation of the forum TOS and grounds for suspension.

actually, Sprig, if we want to try and enforce it, especially with threats of banning, then perhaps we shouldn't lie about it being in the TOS. Because it's not anywhere in the agreement. In the past we've asked people not to do that sort of thing, but we've never threatened banishment on a first offense. Sorry, it was a little slip, but geez guys, calm down.

Not that you guys are taking a vote, but I would just like to say that it doesn't seem to be that big a deal. SE indicated that he was going to take down the link a little later anyway, and he was just doing fuzzy a favor. Yeah, it is against the rules, but not something worth getting upset over.

Yeah, we all need to calm down. This thread is long, so I'm gonna lock it. Anyone who wants to stay on topic can start a new one.
