Title: Foreign Music
Post by: GorgonlaVacaTremendo on June 30, 2004, 09:18:07 PM
SO we have a foreign exchange student here right now, and he will be here for most of the summer.  And he brought a few disks fully loaded with Spanish MP3s for his enertainment.  I, naturally, asked him to borrow them and put all of them on my computer.  I have an insane amount of Spanish rock and pop on my computer.  And most of it is good.  I am pleased.

Sometimes I listen to Radio Darvish on iTunes radio while I'm photoshopping. It's this Iranian thing.

I've got a lot of anime mp3s too...

most of the foreign mp3s I have are just Irish. I do have 12 from a band from France called Dolly.

As you can probably guess, most of my foreign music is Scottish or English  folk--Kate Rusby (Yorkshire) and her ilk.

I'll join SE's Irish club. Mostly Clannad, Maire (Moya) Brennan, Mary Black, Nightnoise, et al.

I have one from South America called Viento de los Andes. Good stuff.

Okay, I also have some Japanese. Hiroshima, Kitaro, and Keiko Matsui.

oh yeah, there's those Shonen Knife files...

anyway, when I say Irish, I'm talking about real Irish folk, like the Clancy Brothers, or Irish rock, like the Levellers or Great Big Sea. Not this namby pamby new age sstuff.

I've got one Great Big Sea song, and an album of Irish music from Irish Americans in Chicago, and a few Clancy Bros., and a few Irish Rovers. They're quite fun.

I've got all of the old (read "pre-gringa") Shakira, as well as a nice chunk of Gypsy Kings, some Fey, some Luis Miguel, Enanitos Verdes, and of course Mana. Some other Mexican groups too, but they're not very good.

J-Pop is my guilty pleasure.  Except when it comes to the B'z, that's just pure pleasure without guilt.

I like J-pop too, some of it.

My husband has recently become a big fan of Orange Range, though, who are more rock, but still have that classic Japanese quirkiness.

Orange Range's Naruto ED is incredibly nonsensical.

What? I didn't mention the Chieftains or Cherish the Ladies or Altan and suddenly I'm namby-pamby? By the bye, Mary Black is not only real Irish folk, in the fine folk singer tradition, she was banned from the airwaves during the big IRA problems in the early 90s because her lyrics were too . . .  incisive. Or do you consider U2 to be Irish rock/folk?

U2 is Irish. And Rock. But not really Irish rock.

Actually, I don't really like the chieftans tha tmuch, but it's the Clannad I didn't like. THey're pretty ... icky.

Kosheen, and Ian Brown are my latest imports of purchase.

I like the german based band De/Vision allot also.  They sound allot like Depeche Mode.  Do we have any Depeche fans around?

heh, minor fan. I have "Behind the Wheel" playing as I read this thread, so I must like them enough to be one of the first dozen or so cds I ripped at work.

I own them all except for 1 record, and like 4 singles.  I haven't got the box sets either, but I have thought about it.  Other than that I have almost all of there work up to now.  They are working on new material for release in the autumn.  SWEET! ;D

Speak & Spell is the only album that I do not have.  As for singles I don't even know that one.  I'd have to research a bit to find out.  I'd almost bet by now that I am way further behind than I think I am on the singles.

Which albums do you own e?

I actually only own Catching Up,  Music for the Masses and a single of "It's No Good" on CD.
I have Some Great Reward on vinal, though. And I think Speak and Spell is one of the ones I have on tape. I haven't updated as much of my tape collection as I would like.

What did you think of the "Speak & Spell" album?  Was it any good?  I can imagine it probably would be.  There older material is not as good as the newer stuff, but that's true for almost any artist.  I will however say that with Depeche Mode I have enjoyed all of their material up to the present.  Their music gets better as they progress through records, and their careers.  They have engineers from the Violator record on the one they are working on now, Yipeeeeee!  Violator was my favorite Depeche Mode album!!!

I just got the new NIN today!  Totally Awesome Stuff!  To me I think it is reverting back to The Downward Spiral days.  I love this new record from start to finish.  If you like NIN in the slightest I recommend checking it out.  If you go to NIN.COM  then click on CURRENT there is a shortcut to listen to the record via the internet in it's entirety.  I do recommend checking this one out, Great Stuff! ;D

I remember not being impressed by it. It's been an awfully long time since I listened to it. It was alright, but like you said, their newer stuff is much better. It's not something that made me angry, but other than Some Great Reward, the only old stuff of theirs I listen to is on Catching Up.

I would have to totally agree Some Great Reward is a great album.  One of my favorite songs of Depeche's is on that record, which is "Blasphemous Rumours".  Black Celebration is another good record by them also.

We got to see Great Big Sea in Newfoundland.  Wheee!

My husband has Altan and Clannad.  And Capercaillie.  I hope I spelled that right.  I think I like Capercaillie the best of those three.

I didn't know that we had a foreign music thread! Cool!

I took two semesters of Italian at BYU, and at that time fell in love with ITALIAN POP!!! Nek's "Laura non ce" was played repeadedly in my apartment at that time. Nek is cool--I recommend him.

A friend made me a CD of Italian songs, and I love it. I also like Andrea Bocelli, which is not Italian Pop, but is beautiful opera-like music. Eros Razamotti is cool, too. The song that makes me crack up, though, is the Backstreet Boys singing "Quit Playing Games with My Heart" in Italian.

Eros Ramazotti is cool, though I've only heard him in Spanish--he rerecords everything and releases it in Mexico.

Regarding Backstreet Boys in Italian, I have a "popular hits of the day" tape that includes the Spice Girls singing in truly horrible Spanish.

I'll bring my Italian pop to roleplaying tonight. Then you, too, can rejoice in the glory that is Nek.  :D

Oh!  Remembered something else...

Also in Newfoundland, we got to see a band from Quebec called La Bottine Souriante (which means "the smiling shoe," I think).  We didn't even go see them on purpose, they were just part of a free show on the waterfront for Canada Day, sandwiched in between some local acts.  We were absolutely entranced.  The percussion was mainly provided by one guy's feet--some amazingly talented feet--and they all just had so much energy, and captivated and communicated with the audience so well, despite the language barrier.  It was quite possibly the best concert I've ever seen.  I would pay good money to see them again.

A huge chunk of my music collection is foreign, and in all sorts of zany weird languages, too (I've even got Kazakh, Acadien, Manx Gaelic, Georgian...)

Highest concentration is JPop (most of which is Ayumi.  I ought to be ashamed), French, and probably Spanish, though I've a fair bit of some other languages, as well.

A friend of mine (just got his degree in Linguistics, specializing in Phonology and Turkic languages) loves playing the "guess the language of the song" game.  He is exceedingly good at it.  I'm moderately good with IE languages, but not so hot when it comes to much else.

If anyone's ever interested in introducing me to new international music (or wants to be exposed to some oneself), I'd be all over any opportunities.

I don't see how Internet Explorer is any geekier than Indo-European, honestly.

What, do we have to start talking about Nostratic, Esperanto (to this day, that conlang sounds like a coffee type) and Quenya to qualify?
Title: Re: Foreign Music
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 13, 2005, 10:37:11 AM
computers are inherently more geeky than language. It's a fact of life that we lingua-philes have to learn to accept.
Title: Re: Foreign Music
Post by: Entsuropi on June 13, 2005, 11:37:15 AM
Foreign languages are a crutch used by the weakwilled natives of other (less blessed) countries.

Apart from Quenya, Westron and the like. Those are allowed.

Klingon is a grey area.
Title: Re: Foreign Music
Post by: The Jade Knight on June 13, 2005, 10:12:26 PM
I don't know.  I've managed to alienate computer geeks with my language geekiness.

But then, I'm a conlanger, and that puts me in a whole separate category.

I have to say, I've always associated Texans with big hats and big egos. Because that's how most of them that I have met have been.

But I shouldn't stereotype. I mean, I'm from Southern California, for crying out loud. Don't even get me started on, like, the Valley Girl stereotype...

Texas was once its own country, and they haven't figured out that they're not anymore since.

In the old game Hyperblade, it gave players nationalities.  Many were American.  A few were Texan.

I really like Loreena McKennitt.  She's Canadian...

No, but in terms of more interesting music, does anyone know Hedningarna?

I've heard them described as "Alternative Folk" (where Folk = traditional Scandinavian music)  They're Swedish/Finnish, I believe, and they're the weirdest group I've ever liked.  If you want song recommendations, chime in and I'll hand some out.
