Title: Top 3 Books
Post by: Faster Master St. Pastor on February 01, 2006, 07:57:09 PM
I have some spare time on my hands and have decided that I should re-read some of the more enjoyable books that I have read. So, what are the top three books that you are most likely to re-read this year. I think that it will be interesting to see how many of us choose the same ones or something like that...anyway without further adu (that word is weird) my list of top (in no particular order) three books:

1. Holes. Okay, so I'm re-reading this one right now, give me a break.
2. Ender's Game. Gotta love.
3. The Elimist Cronicles. I'm a sucker for living copious amounts of time.
4. The Lord of the Rings. Its been a while.
5. Elantris. Likely at the end of the year, since I've read it recently.

For those of you who mock my pitiful counting abilities; kick my hose. Yes, you heard right; kick my hose.

This should be under Books. I'll have to reply when I get off work.

Oh, crap! I was thinking; 'put it in books' but for some reason I didn't, one of the admins help would be cool.

Whoa, hold up.  Those first three books are three I absolutely LOVE.  I'm completely surprised to see The Ellimist Chronicles there.  Great book from a great series.

The three books I'll re-read this year, many times: Suncatcher Trilogy 1, 2, and 3.  Why? Because I'm writing them and they'll be pretty much the only things I'll have time to read more than once this year, mostly 'cause, well, I have to.  Plus, I've got about ten billion books in my To Be Read pile, I should probably finish some of them before I re-read anything . . .  But now that you mention it, I'd love to re-read Ender's Game.  That book blew me away.  I remember feeling absolutely devestated by a revelation in the middle, so much so that I had to set the book down and compose myself before continuing.  Amazing writing.

I've got so many new books to read that I don't know if I'll have time to get back to any old ones. On the other hand, I haven't read Dune in a while, so it might be time again.

I should reread Holes--I love that book. I, like Jeff, will be rereading all of the Suncatcher series, plus all of two other series, too. Three, actually. Well, not *all*, but two books of each. And I've been listening to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell--good book, but not one that I'll read again, because it's so dang LONG. I rearranged all my books last weekend and ended up with two shelves on one bookshelf of my to-be-read pile.

But if I could, I'd spend time with Robin McKinley. It's been too long since I've reread The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown. But I'm just trying to keep up with the books I haven't read yet at this point.

Strange and Norrell really was very long.  I liked it, but it had pacing issues for me.  Long pacing issues.  Maybe listening to it would have been better.

Well, it is great--the narrator is wonderful--but the production is 32 HOURS long. I've had it from the library for 3 weeks, and it was due today, and I'm only on disk 18 of 26. I tried to renew it, but it's in high demand. Someone's requested it, so I can either try to finish it up soon and hope to get a relatively small fine (I've been listening to it on my commute, so only about an hour a day, though I've been bringing it in in the evening to try to finish it faster), or I can return it without finishing... :(

I, like Fell, believe that I have too many books on my to read list to re-read anything. But I end up doing it anyway. My recent re-reads include The Chronicles of Narnia (long before movie was released, though), the Prydain Chronicles, and the Lord of the Rings. And, well, *sigh*, the Riftwar Saga.

I, unfortunately, have taken a break from reading fiction. Though I make time for the occassional graphic novel. If I had the time, I would like to re-read LotRs and Narnia. Course, I have a large list of unread books I would like to read.

Stacer, the last part is definitely the strongest, although I wasn't blown away by the way it ends.  (Not like I have room to talk--my endings are always the hardest.)  What are the late fees like at your library?  ;-)

Oooh, I love McKinley. I haven't read those since HS, I think, and I'm nearing my 10th year reunion. yikes!!

I think all my fantasy and sci fi reading has kinda "spoiled" me, though. I have a hard time finding mainstream fiction interesting lately. Or the fiction I'm workshopping in my Novel in Progress seminar. (A frat boy-rape plot, a girl seeks comfort w/ hubby's best friend plot, etc., etc.) It's all just so . . . boring. *sigh*

Rip disks 18-26 to mp3 and burn it. Can your car CD player play mp3 cds?

Note to lawyers: the Time-Waster's Guide does not condone the breaking of copyright laws, but it does think that you look really nice today. Have you lost weight?

My rereads are always in the girly section.

1. Beauty by Robin McKinley. I've already read it so many times but every time I read it again, it makes me so happy.
2. Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. This one is still laugh-out-loud funny to me, plus after watching the movie I need to remember how the book really was.
3. Fruits Basket by a Japanese lady whose name starts with a "T". This is the girliest of them all, and it's the only manga I've actually bought. I'm going to reread the whole series.

1. Lord of the Rings. I have been meaning to reread them for so long, but I have a large backlog of books, many of which are required for school, so a series as big as this one is rather hard to get to.
2. Atlas Shrugged. I love this book, but like LOTR, it is very large, and hard to get around to. However, it has so many characters that could be my favorites, that it is hard to not reread.
3. The Amber Spyglass. Once again, several of my favorite characters come from this book. In general, this series is one of my favorites because it has an involving storyline, strong characters, many underlying themes, a full world, and a massive conflict throughout it all.

Lately I've been wanting to reread Michael Crichton's Sphere.  I shouldn't--I have books I need to read first, including two that I've borrowed--but I might break down and do it anyways.

Other books to reread:

The Bunnicula Series (There's a new one out I haven't read!)

The Outsiders (Owned the tapes once and listened to it upwards of 30 times when I was in highschool, but haven't read it in eight years or so.)

I have yet to achieve the enlightenment that allows me to understand how people can like this book, let alone the author.

Hey Fish--do you happen to have a copy of Howl's Moving Castle I could borrow?  (EUOL or CtrlZed?)  I need to do a book report for school, and I've never read that one.  (I know--I'm a terrible person.)  If not that one, do any of you have a copy of Hitchhiker's Guide (nope--haven't read that one, either.  I'm such a loser . . .)

Yup, I've got one, and you can totally borrow it.  You remember to get us Love Potion #9 for Tuesday, and I'll remember to bring you the book.  Deal?

Edit:  I have a copy of Howl's, not Hitchhiker's, which I have also never read.

Sadly, I don't reread books. I don't know why, but it's probably good for the local used book store. Maybe it's because I have too many books sitting around that I haven't read...

(Also, hello, I am new and happy to be here).

I also have a very small list of books that I will actually reread from time to time. Ender's Game, LOTR, and a few others.

I've got The First Circle by Solzhenitsyn checked out right now. I love stories about prison, or military cadets.

Today I was the lucky recipient of a gift card to Barnes and Noble...sooo...looking through this thread I'm seeing some interesting ideas.  My question is given 25 bucks what books would go on the must own list versus the, borrow from the public library list?  I have a fairly full library of my own, but there's always more books to buy.  :)

Dune, by Frank Herbert. Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo. Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card. The Prydain Chronicles, by Lloyd Alexander.

Shade's Children, Garth Nix. The Dark Elf Trilogy, R.A. Salvatore. Sphere, Michael Chriton.

Eh, I wouldn't exactly say those are some of the best out there, but they were good enough to get me to want a copy. Though I do remember being bored out of my mind during the last fify or so pages of the third book in The Dark Elf Trilogy.

Graham Greene, The Power and the Glory
Richard Adams, Watership Down
and uh... yeah. that's it. You should own many books, but those are the only two I would be specifically sad about if I didn't have a copy in my home

No Don Quijote on that list?

That's a special case
I have two beloved editions of DQ. I would be sad to lose them. However, since this is about buying books...

Or maybe I'm just trying to justify a gross oversight on my part.

I was disappointed with the entire third book of the Dark Elf trilogy. The first two weren't amazing, but at least they broke the D&D mold.

It's less stressful than saying some other noun, like flowers, or interstellar physics.
