Title: Spidey 2 *spoilers*
Post by: 42 on June 30, 2004, 04:47:26 PM
edit by SE: A nonspoiler thread can be found here (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=movies;action=display;num=1089132541). The TWG review of the movie can be found here (http://www.timewastersguide.com/view.php?id=785).

So I just got back from seeing Spider-Man 2. It was good. I liked how it progressed the over-arching story rather than it just being Spidey meets another one of his villians.

So they have Doc Connors and Jon Jameson in this one. And a very obvioud allussion to Hobgoblin being the next villian in the next film.

I liked the 1960 animated series theme song making it's way into the movie in a not so subtle way.

I'm also glad that Stan Lee is being regulated to cameos, because he just can't act.

And the recap of the first movie done by Alex Ross is just awesome.

sigh.
I'm losing geek cred over this one. I can't go till tomorrow night.

I guess that means I'm organizing contacts and writing reviews tonight. *IF* the kids let me.

Yes 42, it was great. I went to the midnight show last night. Had to sit in the front though since my friends are a tad dumb when it comes to thinking about getting to a movie a bit earlier when its such a big one as Spider-Man 2. Nonetheless!

Campbell's cameo was rather humorous. And seeing his gigantic face on the screen also made me a bit giddy.

***Really Big Freaking Spoiler***

The only thing I didn't like so much was that they glossed over fancifully why Parker was losing his powers. I really didn't like the way that was done. I understand that it was because he was focusing too much on trying to be a better person as Parker, and just idling Spidey.

J Johan Jameson is even better in this one. And also how it would seem that Peter is the bigger ladies man than he thinks. Oh-la-la.

His landlord as well, those scenes are quite the humorfulled.

I loved how they showed the Green Goblins upgraded flyer as well as the little room filled with his arsenal.

So, comic book geeks, answer a question for me.  Where in the books does MJ find out Peter is Spiderman?  I wasn't expecting it in movie two, but I hear that the storylines have stayed pretty close to the comic books.

well, the movie really hasn't stayed all that faithful. At least, not hte first one

In the comics, Peter doesn't meet MJ for years after he graduates. Gwen Stacy is his gf in HS, and it's Gwen that is thrown from the bridge (she dies, incidentally, when spidey catches her but she stops too fast and her back breaks). Peter doesn't even want to MEET MJ, becuase her mom and Aunt May are trying to set them up adn... well... he doesn't want to be set up with someone his Aunt May would pick.

So in regards to his relationship with MJ, at least, the movie has been quite liberal. Peter does tell her before they're married, and they break up for a bit because of it.

Them's fightin' words! Some of the best stories came out of the clone saga.

Let's just chalk that one up to, "I can believe you got bitten by a radioactive spider, but making up facts about how cloning works ticks me off."
Title: Re: Spidey 2 *spoilers*
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on July 01, 2004, 02:09:18 PM
oh come on. THis is a world where a gamma-bomb explosion turns you into a bohemoth of unimaginal strength. A world where flying in space can turn you into a human flame.

And the ideas came up 20 years ago, when not so much was generally known about cloning. I find that complaint unfair.
Title: Re: Spidey 2 *spoilers*
Post by: Brenna on July 01, 2004, 02:23:39 PM
I understand that cloning wasn't understood back then, but it would look a bit weird if they used the exact same ideas now for the movie (if they decide to use that aspect at some point)--I mean, they changed it so that Peter was bitten by a genetically engineered/altered spider in the movies, instead of a radioactive one. Why not update the science of cloning too?

Spiderman 2, by the way, was an excellent movie.  I liked it *much* better than the first one. I thought Doc Ock was a great character, and the actor did a fantastic job.

well of course they'll update some of the science. But how does that preclude using the clone saga? Make it like real cloning, but incubate them in some techno-uterus instead, and make up something about rapid aging. There. All you need to do the clone saga. You can still have clone instability and everything (due to the rapid aging bit). The only thing you have to leave out is Ben Reilly dissolving to nothing in Peter's arms.

Just saw it today.  I agree, I like it a lot more than the first (mostly cause it goes into how being Spiderman is ruining Peter's life - and his decisions about that.)  Way cool show, I think I'll see it again and try to catch a little more.  (Where was Stan Lee?)  There was one scene that I thought was too much, though.

**Spoilers**

When Doc Oc is in the hospital room and his extra arms start going crazy, I think I lasted WAY too long.  For a while, I thought I was in some B-movie horror show with all the saws and people flying everywhere.  The worst was the girl clawing the ground with her fingernails.  It was just too . . . cheesy.  They needed to tone that part down.

Post by: EUOL on July 01, 2004, 05:20:20 PM
You know, Tek, I was thinking the exact same thing during that part.  In fact, it could have ALL been cut, and it would have been more dramatic.  We see the arms start moving, then seem Dr. Oct stumble out of the building, a bit bloodied and dazed, then have him look at his arms and think 'What have I done?'

They way they did it turned out to be my least favorite part of the movie.

I hate to agree with youse on that one, but I too thought that scene was a bit much. Of course, this is being directed by the guy who made the Evil Dead movies and such. And Stan Lee is in the part where the train is about to fall of the track, if I'm correct. And if you miss Bruce Campbell, well then... you weren't really watching the movie were you. Wink win, nudge nudge, know what I mean, say no more.

That man needs to stop doing cameos and hurry up and make the next Evil Dead movie.

Honestly, with the mainstreaming of fantasy, I'll bet they could pull off a really cool, amusing 'Undead Armies' comedy that would be a financial sucess.

BEST MOVIE EVER!

ok, i'm totally not paying attention to whether there are spoilers here. Likely there are

Anyway, yes, as I said. Best movie ever. I'm sure after I calm down a bit I'll be able to rationally look at it and admit that the surgery room scene (yeah, WAY over the top, but trés Raimi) and the Aunt May lecture scene were too much, and bring down the quality of the film a little, but wow. Yes, I don't remember BEING This pumped about a movie EVER. The plan is to keep myself from getting calm. I must go see it again

anyway, you know what scene I loved? Where Peter Tells Aunt May how Uncle Ben died.. it's so subtle, and I almost wish they'd used that to get Peter swinging again. The whole realization that he doesn't have to beat himself up over these things. MAY beats herself over somethign trivial. Peter should realize (and does a little, it's more than a confessional scene) that it doesn't have to destroy his life. He can go on.

Anyway, those fight scenes were AMAZING! MORE RAIMI! MORE! I DEMAND IT!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!

Well, not the best EVER, but still very well done.  Easily one of the few superhero films that managed to stay nearly 100% true to it's background material.

i've slept on it, and I want to add a couple things. One is a correction. First, 42, Harry is not the Hobgoblin. He's the second Green Goblin. His powers come from a suit instead of a science experiment. (incidentally, the THIRD GG is a kid who works at the Daily Bugle who finds the suit and tries to be a hero, but finds out he's too much of a coward and gives up on it during the Onslaught saga). It's quite possible that Raimi will call him the Hobgoblin, but there doesn't seem to be a need to change the content that way.

Second. Spidey stops the train. H3||z yeah! it's a total homage to Superman catching the plane in his introduction to Metropolis, but come on, this was hecka cooler than that. And blows his catching the helicopter in the first movie AWAY.

THat movie ruled.

No, still not calmed down.

I finally got to see it. Yay! What a good movie!

And I don't care if it wasn't terribly true to the original comics, because I think it was stupid of Peter to think that he could go through his life ignoring his feelings for her and "protecting" her. She needed to be able to make that choice for herself, whether she'd want to take that risk. He shouldn't make it for her.

Oh, and a question: is the astronaut guy someday going to be a bad guy? I forget his name, but I mean MJ's fiance, the son of the newspaper publisher. He just seemed to have an evil glint in his eye.

Post by: Slant on July 06, 2004, 12:54:52 PM
He's not EXACTLY a bad guy; more a victim of circumstance.  The whole point of the character to begin with (in the comics at least) was to contrast the bullying, narrow-minded Jameson with his heroic, noble, self-sacrificing son.  I think it was supposed to make JJ Jameson realize his own flaws and try to be a better person, but luckily that never quite happened.

I've been thinking of Stacer's comments. And I think it's really unfair.

You want Peter to talk to MJ about what she wants to do. The problem is, he honestly doesn't know if she will be supportive of him in this. If she isn't, it will be a MAJOR problem for him. It's not like you can just tell a girl "Hey, want to keep a dark secret for the rest of your life that may endanger you? Let's get married. Oh, and by the way, I'm Spider-Man."

It's not something you can just reveal to someone to find out how they'll react. Then, once she does know, he's just been in a mind set of what's best. Which is something she agrees with at first, as she doesn't consider an alternative.

So I saw the movie on Friday, and ditto to all the praise that has been dished out.

Here's a question, though: Is the landlord's daughter someone important that we'll see later on?  It seems like the movie focused on her a little and then ignored her, and it makes me wonder if they were setting up a character.

well, I can't think of who it would be, unless it's someone Raimi has come up with. That is a little less than perfect. I almost expected her to come out while Peter and Mary Jane are kissing and then cry or run back into her place, then have sirens before Peter can do anything about it.

She was used to good effect, and I think her primary purpose was just to show that Peter had other options even than MJ and being Spider-Man. Or at least to show that this is what he was going to end up with if he chose to NOT be Spider-Man (he didn't convince MJ to come his way until he took the mask back up). Yeah, she's semi-cute and skinny and all, but she's no Mary Jane Watson-Parker.

Yes, but how will they introduce Venom?  X-Men weren't willing to go into outer space to get Phoenix, so will they bring Venom from outer space, or just develop him on Earth (and, coincidentally, in New York)?
Title: Re: Spidey 2 *spoilers*
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on July 14, 2004, 05:42:45 PM
Theyll resort to the cartoon explanation, which involves a shuttle crashing in new york, with the Venom on board as a stow-away. Parker finds it first, doesnt like what it does to him, and discards it just in time for eddie brock to find it.
Title: Re: Spidey 2 *spoilers*

1) Venom won't be in a spidey movie unless a LOT of things change. Someone else owns the lisence to make a film of him.

2) They'd more likely resort tot he current comic explantion since the restart of the spidey storylines: Eddie Brock's father worked with Peter Parker's father in a lab and were developing a living suit that goes wild

The whole Spidey loosing his powers thing, do you think that was hinting towards man-spider, or that his heart wasn't into being Spidey?  The second explination doesn't really make much sense, I mean, why would his powers be connected in any way to his emotional state?  But if they did Man-spider, it would be way corny...

probably just that he wasn't into it. Why it doesn't make biologic sense, it does psychologicaly. Plus it has to do with gifts and talents: use what you got or you'l lose it.

it also hints heavily at the clone saga, which comic readers will recognize more than the man-spider.

WARNING: Thread Revival.  You don't need to read this.

So the hubby and I saw this Saturday at the dollar theater. I'd completly forgotten about it, since in July we had NO MONEY at all to go see it.

Apart from the fact that the audience at the $ theater was a bit weird (Doc Ock runs out of the hospital, looks at his arms and thinks "What have I done?" and they laugh?!") I was floored.

We don't own the first one, so I'm kind of glad they're going to be selling a two-pack when this comes out on DVD, because I HAVE to own this one.  This is the kind of movie I want my kids to grow up seeing.  This is archetype heroism alongside things like Star Wars.  That scene?  In the train with all the people carrying him?  I cried.  It was great.  Action, explosions, cool stuff.

I laughed, I cried; it moved me Bob.

It's playing at the Imax theater here, and we were sorely tempted the other night. But it started at 9:30 at night and my roommate insists on going to bed at 9 and getting up at 5 every day and going for a run (she's very dedicated), so we didn't. But I'll still have to go.

Never seen an Imax movie--Spidey's got to be a great one to see on it.

I saw Attack of the Clones in IMAX. They had to trim the movie length to fit IMAX format and they actually made it better cutting out a few annoying scenes.
It's quite an experience seeing a non-documentary type thing on IMAX :)
