Title: The stupidest thing you've ever done...
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on October 16, 2003, 08:52:46 PM
I just did mine about 45 minutes ago.

Some of my team here at work send around "success Stories." they annoy the heck out of most of us, and we just delete them and whine about it to each other. But on the last shift, we NEVER do it, because we're not into that.
So, anyway, it's a busy night, and our supervisor has stayed a little late. And she writes this friggin NOVEL for her little sale with a guy. So I roll my eyes, and figure it's time for a little rant to two of hte guys who'd agree with me.
So I hit reply and clear out hte TO line (you've GOT To clear out that line, first thing, before you type ANYTHING rant-y). And I send it to two of my buds, and just add something like "This chick is driving me insane." ANd I hit send
But I'm paranoid, so I double check after sending to see who got it.
And that's when I see the CEO's name in the CC field.

After about 30 seconds of panic (I assure you, I have to get new jeans now) I manage to regain the presence of mind to recall the message (thank heavens for Outlook!). Recall only works if the message has not been read by the particular recipient, but Outlook will tell you if it has been successful or not.
Except that Outlook 2002 doesn't report that to Outlook 98 properly. Guess which respective versions my boss and I are using?
Yeah, well, I know he left the building about an hour before the incident, but I know some of the exec's check their mail at home throughout the evening, so maybe.
On the other hand, now that it's been about an hour, and he hasn't called to tell me to get the hell out of Dodge, I'm pretty sure I'm safe, assuming the system works right (we use an exchange server, so I don't think he can use anything besides outlook to read the mail).
But if I'm unemployed tomorrow, because he just wants to do it in person, well, you already know what happened.

Why would your boss fire you for saying that your superviser is driving you insane?  That seems innocent enough.

I think that there is a good chance that your boss will just ignore it.

Unless, he's the type that figures this kind of stuff is going on anyways and as long as he doesn't hear about it all is well. When he does hear it, he assumes that there has been too much of a negative talk going around so he needs to fire someone to make an example. Which doesn't really make sense. Unfortunately, I've worked in archaic places like that.

My bet on a worse case situation, is that he'll send you to HR to have a little discussion about work satisfaction, productivity, and other stuff including as many business catch-phrases as possible. And a formal disciplinary notices could be written up, which is the most I think than can really do, unless they have other concerns. So that is what I think is the worse that could happen.

YOu do NOT know this guy. Heh. He's a hard***.

Anyway, i would because it would look like I was complaining about the successs stories (which I was) which he is very attached to. Plus he would mention it to my more immediate supervisors who just went on this spiel about how hurt they are that we don't bring things to them and aren't all happy hippy hoppy about the way things are going in the department.

Well, you could just explain that the success stories feel more like gloating to you rather than inspirational. Or whatever you can say that's honest but not offensive. And then make a simple suggestion of things you would like to hear going on in the company that might inspire you or others to work more productively. (just don't mention getting more pay).

Course, it sounds like this guy may not be all that emotionally mature, or ,simularly, is just full of himself so that means you'll just get fired one way or another.

Good Luck!

Maybe your boss doesn't have to be at work tomorrow.

**wink wink**

I mean, what are ninja assassin priests good for anyways?

Ninja assassin priests are always useful, like when someone steals your parking space, or gets the last copy of the magazine you wanted to buy.

Your Kung Fu is strong.

The big thing is that the CEO is also the owner. THis is his baby. The baby he's going to sell in 2 years. So he wants NOTHING to go worng, and he doesn't like ANY negativity. Yeah, that sucks, because you need to rant for a moment every now and then. And after all, I didn't mean to send it to him.

My planned defense, if it is needed, is to explain that it's getting to me that she got a 7 part upsell in her first phone call, while I've been busting my hump all day but my numbers still suck. Which is also true, just not what i was thinking at the time.

If that doesn't work I intend to open a jar of killer bess and run for it in the confusion. It will mean abandoning my action figures, but it would be mysterious.

Killer Bess? Ah... I hate to break it to you SE, but the characters in Avast Ye! are *not* real. They can't help you now.

So what you're saying is that this isn't his baby, it's his cash cow.

I can't feel too sorry for you. You of all people should know better than to rant in email. Look at all the trouble Martha Stewart got into. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

In the future you might think about copying the success story into your hotmail account and ranting about it there. You can still send it to your bud's work emails, but it's harder for creepy things like cc: CEO to creep in unnoticed. It's easier to maintain that someone broke into your hotmail account if a tat forwards it to someone important too.

I do hope the message got sucessfully recalled though.

/me crosses her fingers and hopes REALLY HARD

No, it's his baby. Definitely his baby.

He came up with the idea 13 years ago, he's been pushing it. It's been his life for over a decade. And now he has a chance to sell it. And in his 50's, be a multi-millionaire with no work commitments. Who wouldn't jump at that?

And well, I've been in the building for over 7 hours with him, and no one's said anything. In fact, the Teaching Company is hiring. Anyone need a job in Virginia?

oh, and THAT'S how Stewart got caught? I can honestly say I had NO idea of that. I don't follow anything about her enough to know these things.

To me that means that he is dedicated to the money that can be made, rather than the greater heights the company is capable of acheiving. Feel free to ignore me, however, as I am currently in the middle of Good to Great by Jim Collins, and, like first year psychology students, am acting like I know more than I actually do because I haven't finished the book yet.

I think it was more along the lines of being used for evidence against Stewart. As I understand it, most companies keep records of all the emails ever sent from or to the company, and the log remains, even after you delete it from your own box.

I'm glad everything worked out.

Okay, speaking of stupid things....

This wasn't a personal moment of stupidity, but I got to experience it.  First, a little explanation for our non-Mormon friends.  I'm a member of a 'Singles Ward,' meaning pretty much who attends my particular congregation is unmarried.  The masculine half of the congregation meets together during meetings in a group known as the 'Elder's Quorum.'

So, the other night I organized an Elder's Quorum activity.  (Meaning an activity for the men in the Ward.)  We were all meeting at one member's house to watch a movie and eat pizza.  (That's my kind of 'quorum unity' activity.)  The guy who invited us over has an awesome sound system hooked up to a DVD with a projector.

I got there a little early, since I organized the thing, while the ward member was puttering around setting up the screen and the projector.  Only a few of us were there at the time, and he moved over to test the DVD player.

He turned it on, and what should appear on the screen?

Girls Gone Wild: Ultimate Spring Break.

He quickly blamed it on his roommate and rushed forward to take the DVD out.  However, that moment when the title screen of GGW appeared on the six-foot tall screen in front of a bunch of Mormon guys was about the funniest thing I have ever experienced.

The moral of this story, friends, is thus:  If you are going to have a church group over to your house to watch a movie, check to make sure your porn is well-hidden.

EUOL, that is the funniest thing I have heard in, ooh, the last few hours. That's some advice I'll have to remember, along with "Never spit in a man's face unless his moustache is on fire".

That's awesome, EUOL.

Okay, here's mine. Let me establish the scene for you: My wife and I live in the same condo complex as her brother and sister-in-law, so we often go up there to hang out while our kids are asleep (taking the baby monitor with us). On one particular evening my father-in-law was visiting, and we were all upstairs at the other house tolerating his presence--nobody likes my father-in-law.

So eventually we hear 5-month-old crying on the baby monitor, so we go downstairs to change his diaper and whatnot. While we're down there we start mocking my father-in-law pretty mercilessly, as he'd been slightly ruder than normal that evening. We comment on how he's a big bully, and drop a few comments regarding his intelligence, and right about then we realize that we're saying all of this--you guessed it--less than three feet from the baby monitor.

As you can imagine, we were almost too frightened to go back upstairs. We literally thought that all peace in our lives had just ended. We finally got the courage to go back upstairs, and eralized that they had unplugged the monitor as soon as we left, because the crying baby was drowning out their movie. They hadn't heard a thing, and we breathed a profound sigh of relief. Sufffice it to say, we try to be a lot more complimentary of my father-in-law these days.
