Title: Happy Things 2006: Generation X
Post by: Chimera on January 03, 2006, 02:06:42 PM
I'm happy to start a new happy things thread.

And that, after torrential rain, we have California sunshine again.

I'm happy because it has been it has been a warm 63 degrees in Denver this weekend. Denver's winter is so much better than those bitterly-cold (below zero) winters in the Mid-west that I've survived over the last four years.

My old boss, a BYU prof, is including a diagram that I created in her next book!!! :D Her book is on Zora Neale Hurston, entitled Zora in Lightning and Storm.

A while back, I used Quark to design a cool diagram on African Mysticism, and she had me tweak it a little yesterday for her Powerpt presentation. That's when she said she'd be including it in her book, complete with a byline of course. All I can say is this: Whoo-hoo!!!

Thing is, only about half of them are heroes. Omega Red was about to do some horrible, horrible things to Cyclops while Bulleye attacked Einstein.

anyway, the list is in one of the questions in my FAQs (http://plastic.herbertlives.com/faq.php)

I'm happy that after I was feeling bad for still being in school at my age, I ran into my cousin at school who has just started on her degree. She started college at the same time as her oldest child.

stacer, hope you're having fun with your new toy. What kind of PC did you end up getting?

I'm happy b/c I'll be gettinig an internet connection at home this afternoon, so I'll be able to waste time somewhere other than school. Yay wasting time! Speaking of which, for Christmas I got seasons 3-5 of Gilmore Girls. Don't bother calling for the next few weeks, I won't answer.  ;)

I'm happy because I have a job that I think is going to work perfectly to meet my current needs.

I've been hired by a local tutoring business run by family friends. (Having connections when you job search is so nice. They didn't even interview me, it was more like, "We want you to work here. Do you want to?") For starters, my set hours are Tu/Th from 3:30-6:30. As new meds are making me pretty sick, but I seem to do better in the afternoons, working a couple of afternoons for three hours is just about right. And I love kids and teaching, so it's a good mix. They have their own program that the kids work through, so I don't have to prepare anything, just show up and run the kids through their work. Nice and not stressful. I'm not going to break the bank, but I'll have gas money and entertainment and such.

The funny thing was when he told me my salary. Usually he starts people out at $10 an hour, but he's going to start me at $11.50 (again the benefits of knowing your boss already and having him like you). He apologized, though, for having to pay me so little. 'Course, it's not a lot of hours, but it was still funny how he felt bad about paying me so "little." I didn't bother telling him it's more than I've made at any of my jobs, including my upcoming internship. Granted, this is California, not Utah. Trying to live in California on $11.50 an hour, no matter how many hours, is much more difficult.

Anyways, I'm happy about it. I think it's going to be a perfect fit. And I'll be able to pick up more hours as time goes by. So, yay!  ;D

I'm happy because I just got a phone call from a good friend from Boston who moved away, went to Jerusalem, got married, etc. etc. and who happens to be living in Seattle now. I'd been meaning to get back in touch with her, but hadn't figured out her phone number yet (it's buried somewhere in 9-months-old email). She's back in town (apparently, she had to study one more semester in Boston to finish her program) and living nearby. If that isn't enough, four or five OTHER friends from Boston happen to be in town this weekend, and everyone's getting together for dinner tonight. I'm SO glad she called me. It'll be so great to catch up with her, and maybe we'll be able to start hanging out again now that we've got each others' phone numbers!

I love my family. My little brother is especially awesome. I wish everyone could see the stand-up comic routine he puts on each night when he comes home and regales us with his adventures from Target. Who knew that working at a cash register could provide so much entertainment?

I feel like I should be taking notes. My brother is really good at picking up on details to tell a story, although he probably doesn't even realize it. He just likes to strut around and make us laugh.

Post by: Shrain on January 18, 2006, 12:53:35 PM
Kudos to stacer on the date!

I'm in a super good mood for lots of reasons. But here are the best ones:
1) I'm back in Boston after a fun, yet oft grueling, road trip from UT with my little bro. Ah, the stories . . .
2) I persuaded a prof to over-enroll me in his Book Production and Design class--the class I REALLY, REALLY wanted. The class my advisor assured me that I shouldn't bother trying to get in because "For various reasons, this isn't a course where overenrollment is likely. But not to worry: as a first-year student, you'll have other chances to take the course because it's offered every year."
Pfft! Forget that. I mean, I don't want to take just one class because that's all I can get into. I want to get my degree before I'm old and gray, after all. Besides, I'm paying $3,008 for a class, so you betta believe that I'm gonna do all I can to get what I want. Sheesh, they really need to add more sections. It's absurd. They keep admitting more people to the program w/o increasing the # of sections offered. >:(
*Ahem...*
3) For Christmas, my friend in CA got me an autographed picture of, get this, Serenity's dashing capt. Malcolm Reynolds at a Firefly con! :D So thoughtful of him to get that. Of course, my friend's a big Firefly fan himself, so the con was more than your average shopping trip. Nothing wrong w/ that, of course.
Anyway, what's really neat is that he had Nathan Fillion write a special inscription:
"Sarah, Keep Flyin'. Keep writing."
*sigh* Now -that's- pretty cool.

<Sorry for the, uh, longish post. Couldn't help myself.>

In order to keep up with the grump thread, I have to say the weather in Colorado has totally rocked so far this winter. I love Colorado because it generally follows my rule on winter weather, being that snow should stay up in the mountains where it belongs. Colorado's weather has been pretty good about this, although Denver did get a little dusking of snow earlier this week but it wasn't enough to be a material breach of the rule.

I made some black bean and corn salsa tonight, and it wasn't half bad. It would have been better had the recipe been easier to read (half of it started under the nutritional information on the bean can), which would have prompted me to buy a fresh tomato. As it was, the canned tomato did... okay. But it's still a happy thing that I made something relatively healthy to snack on. Now I have to remember to eat those apples I have in the fridge before they go bad.

I think my problem was that I've had this bizarre dreams that wake me up a lot
so while I've been in bed and mostly unconscious for ~8 hours all week, I haven't been getting much real rest. But last night, I just went to bed as soon as I sent the kids to their room, and I actually fell into a deep sleep

Here's wishing everyone a good night's sleep! My dad and I were talking about how it takes a bad night of sleep to appreciate what a blessing sleep is. I really sympathize with those who don't get enough rest often.

And to keep this thread from sounding like the grumpy thread, I will add my 2 cents of happiness, in the form of new wood floors (http://www.vanessakchristenson.com/images/01-14-06_2.jpg) at my house. I love them.

I'm happy because living next to a good art college (Calarts) and having friends there means I get to go to cool and interesting things. Last Friday I went to a lecture by Mike Mignola, creator of the graphic novel Hellboy, and tomorrow evening I get to go hear Mark Hammill speak (Luke Skywalker in Star Wars). And I'd never read a Hellboy comic before (though I think I wil now. He uses mythology, and I'm a sucker for mythology), and I'm not even that much into Star Wars (a little too young to be a true fanatic).

I think I'm going to these things partly to make people on this board jealous.  ;D Oh yes, I am evil.

Spent the afternoon hanging out with my department and my old boss, Peter. We played pool and ate really *hot* chili. After such a weird couple of previous weeks (strange medicine making me all jittery and emotional, still sick, strange guy stalking me, and annual reviews, all within the course of about a week and a half), it was so nice to relax and talk books and trade gossip on the industry.

Yeah, it may sound weird that a director of marketing should do tech support, but the previous one did, and all the sales reps do. And the owner of the business even takes his turn. So it was making me quite grumpy that the marketing director was getting out of the schedule every month.

I'm happy because the Denver Museum of Nature & Science was free today. The Health exhibit told me that I'm overweight (BMI=25.00) and have too much stress in my life but because I didn't have to pay for this information, I'm happy. Plus, the kids had fun.

I think I'm happy that everytime I've been into Walmart in the last month, people have been extremely nice to me. They ask me how I'm doing, give approval of my purchases, give me compliments, and help me with anything I seem to need. I've gotten this from both employees and other customers. It's kind of nice and also kind of creepy.

I also tend to only shop at Walmart in the very early hours of the morning when few people are in the store.

I bought a vaccuum for $30 at Walmart out of desperation--I didn't really expect it to work.

But it sucks!   ;) ;D  I now have clean floors!  Go me!

My monitor also stopped fritzing out.  And I have a table and chairs.  (My roommate just moved out, taking all her furniture and decorations (thank goodness) with her.)  And I totally redecorated.  No more cutsie Americana crap for me!  My apartment looks beautiful!  I'm so HAPPY!

I am now officially disgusted with myself for using that many exclamation points in one post.  Ug.

Emerson finally credited my CC for the $3,053 tuition payment I made before my loans came in. Yay!! My loans came in two weeks ago and the refund was supposed to go thru then. Alas, they screwed up. Thank goodness I didn't add my second class until after my loans came thru. Otherwise, I would've had a n even bigger CC bill. Whew, I'm glad that's taken care of.  :D

So then we made enchiladas, her wearing a jester hat, me wearing a medieval crown. After that we built a fire, ate dinner, and did homework while watching Dances with Wolves. Yep, we're just party girls (http://photobucket.com/albums/f306/shrain78/Good%20Times/). 8)

Very true. I'm happy to see Feb. gone.

Also, registering my car only cost $86! Hurray!! I'd been bracing myself for a much more sizable amount. Yet it's so weird how I paid less for registration than I did to get a MA license that replaces my unexpired UT license. huh.

Title: Re: Happy Things 2006: Generation X
Post by: Shrain on March 01, 2006, 05:09:47 PM
Ah, well, I was just following the dictates of a police officer who pulled me over in my roommate's car last year (before I had my car here). My roomie had kindly given me the use of her car while she was in Kenya for 3 weeks and I tended her dogs. Only problem was that her registration was expired. She didn't think to mention this to me.

Just my luck, I guess, but no cop spotted this little difficulty until I just happened to be driving her car, oblivious. *sigh* Luckily he waived the $50 ticket he could've given to both of us. However, he did give me grief over not having a MA license since I'd been living here for a certain amount of time. I even mentioned that I was a student, but that didn't seem to matter. Dag nab it.

BUT all that aside, I'm sort of glad I got to get a new license because that meant a new photo! My old photo shows me before I lost 90 lbs. So I may be out a big chunk of money, but now I don't have this constant reminder of what I used to look like. Yay! :D

So begins the duel between Faster Master St. Pastor and Fellfrosch! Tremble in awe at the mighty conflict!

It is a bout between a Student of Dark Magic and a Student of Death !
You have 156 hitpoints.
Fellfrosch has 593 hitpoints.

This point will be determined by a battle of Dark Magic!

You have 156 hitpoints and 0 matchpoint(s).
Fellfrosch has 593 hitpoints and 0 matchpoint(s).

Fellfrosch casts a Summon Dark Warriors spell!
You defend with a No Spell spell!
Your spell absorbs 4 damage!
Fellfrosch hits you for 1193 damage!
You have -1037 hit points left.

You cast your Darkstrike spell!
Fellfrosch defends with a No Spell spell!
spell absorbs 3 damage!
You hit Fellfrosch for 100 damage!
Fellfrosch has 493 hit points left.

Your opponent wins the match point!

You slump to the ground dead, your hitpoints depleted to -1037!
Fellfrosch stands over your corpse gloating!

This is the funniest thing ever, one round, and I lose, completly trumped.

You'll want to look at their tuition reimbursement policy very carefully, though. Houghton wouldn't approve it for me because they said it wasn't directly job related for the specific department (i.e., they simply didn't want to pay for it, and that was their excuse). That was okay by me, anyway, because if I'd left the company before two years after my last semester in school, I'd have had to pay it all back, had I gotten tuition reimbursement.

Had I been in trade, however, it would have been great. I would have been approved for tuition reimbursement and had no problem staying on for two more years, because I'd have been in the department I wanted. It sure would have been nice not to have had to move from Boston.

However, things all work as they do for a purpose, and I'm glad for my job here. I love it, and it's way more fantasy oriented than working at Houghton would have been.

Horray for Shrain!

On another note, I just want to say how much I appreciate this forum. I also participate regularly on another board (all LDS women) and although I like it, the women there can get...well, it can turn into melodrama sometimes. There was a big upheaval over the last few days (I was involved in no way) and it makes me appreciate this forum all the more for its sanity and intelligent conversation. What there is of it, anyway ;)

I'm happy because I got my test results in the mail today and I passed and am now officially a State Tested Nursing Assistant.

Now all I need to do is apply for loans, apply to MedCentral, and study more science than I ever planned to, and in two years I can be a registered nurse and be employable for the rest of my life.

I nearly watched that last night myself. I ended up deciding on Lord of the Rings, but got bored (not because of the movie, but because of my mood) and went to bed early. Except that I couldn't sleep--after falling asleep all afternoon at work. This surgery really messed with my sleeping patterns, I tell you. But this is under happy things because I still think I'm getting better, slowly but surely.

There will never be a will, and I have many other nephews.

I'm thinking something more along the lines of I would really like to not have to attend my Abnormal Psych class on monday. But the instructor grades on attendence, even though there really is no reason to show up since all my instructor does is repeat stuff from the book and if you have a question he tells you to reread the book. Course, if a certain lawyer were to sit in my seat and aswered to my name...

That would be a happy thing.

Not that I wouldn't want to do that for you 42, but I will be leaving early monday morning so I can catch my Corporate Taxation class (S Corps and liquidations). Unfortunately, the dictator that teaches the class does take attendance and ask questions and if a student responds "I don't know" then it counts as an absence and if a student misses more than three classes they are not allowed to take the final exam (which is 100% of the students grade). The dictator also knows who I am (because he is the dictator/director for the program and we are both lawyers) and would call on me if he suspected anything (which is likely to happen because you would smell funny to him, 42). Thus it would be best if I didn't miss his class.

Wow.

Dang good price in this expensive rental market, too. I didn't even have to sign a lease or pay 2 1/2 months' rent, just first month's and a $200 deposit. I'm so exicted to move in over the next few days. Just gotta finish my final school projects first.... blah!

Yay Shrain! Good for you. Living alone can be lonely, though, I'll warn you. Does it include heat? That's the most important thing with utilities in Boston apartments. I lived in a house my first winter there and we were spending over $100 *a piece* on heat in a 5-br house every month for oil heat. But of course, then you move to Seattle and everything's electric, and barely any utilities are included, but then you realize you never have to have the heat on full-time except in the "deepest" of winter.

Thanks! As for including heat, you-bet-your-earmuffs-it-does. :D Hooray! Believe me, I experienced heating bills first-hand. Wowzers, heating cost *so* freakin' much. I'm just amazed at how great a deal and nice a place this is. All I have to pay is electric and internet/cable.

About the loneliness... yeah, I've thought about that a lot. But for some reason everything worked out, and I'm excited to give it a try. I mean, I kept trying to arrange things with other LDS girls who needed roomies but nothing was working out. (I didn't want to change wards, for instance, or pay a ton for parking, etc., etc.)

Now, as for those parties who are interested in my apartment-finding abilities, a payment in the amount of $400 should be sent directly to my paypal account. Then we'll talk meals. ;)

I have a good insurence company, USAA and they deserve a plug. I got hit this  morning like I said in the Grumpy thread.  USAA has calm relaxed agents to take the call, and I mean calm. They keep asking questions like, "are you ok" and are very patient. Working at a call center I know how hard that is call after call after call. Oddly though I was freaking out a little, and I had the shakes for about 5 minutes after the accident I stayed calm, remained nice and even hugged the other girl when she staggered over sheepishly to apologize for wrecking my car and almost killing me. Oddly Im not mad at her, Im resigned to the fact that two pieces of matter for whatever reason collided at medium speeds in DC, for whatever reason. Its a chance you take riding in a car, or walking down the street or just living. I know its kind of zen, but for a moment I only observed one cosmic car, in the world, especially when dozens of other cars nearly mimicked our accident at the same intersection.

All in all I stayed buisness like, I was distracted, and finding things like my insurance car proved to be difficult. Of course thats due to the fact that my car had gotten messy as much as the fact that I was nervous. For that matter coming back from the graveyard shift wasnt helping either.

Anyhow, Im convinced that she was solely at fault, I had witnesses and the evidence on scene backs up my story. USAA will make sure I dont pay a dime for my car. Heck when my dads car got t-boned they made sure he go 15,000 dollars to fix it. So like I said, Im not worried.

Plus I get a rental car for free till mine is fixed... glad I paid that extra 5 dollars a month now.

Anyhow everyones ok, I was able to reach people and my car will be ok.

All plusses in my book.

And I think I passed a test last night too. Im glad I didnt get angry. Im glad Im still not angry.

Thanks to all the people who helped too.

Yay thats awesome Shrain...

Im happy because I just read this quote about Fred Rodgers and it made me feel really good and hopeful for humanity.

Quote
The crew mostly cameramen, grips and technicians rarely talked directly to Mr. Rogers off the set. They did, however, mercilessly make fun of him behind his back for the emotional and expressive way he communicated on the show and in public. Fred was an easy target for the crew because he was such an open and, to them, vulnerable man who wore his heart on his sleeve.

Amazingly though, while Mr. Rogers was rehearsing the movements of his puppets before each show, these same macho, blue-collar detractors would surreptitiously sneak into the television studio and ask his puppets for personal advice! Speaking through the voices and personalities of Wise Owl, the King, Squirrel and other puppets, Mr. Rogers would dispense guidance to the crew members about extremely personal issues, such as being impotent or having serious marital or health problems.

Fred assigned me the task of keeping everyone else off the set until he, or rather the puppets, finished counseling a worker. From a discreet distance, I observed these tough men cry and tell the puppets their most secret fears and weaknesses. The men knew on some level, of course, that inside the puppet was the hand of Fred Rogers. The same men who would not talk to Mr. Rogers to his face would bare their souls to his puppet-covered hands!  The genuine concern and compassion Fred expressed through his puppets to these workers was very moving to witness.

Heh. No, an "R" actually: Ryan. We were talking about how I want my novel to be a stand-alone, which led to talking about marketing. (Ryan thought I was saying that stand-alones do better profit-wise in the long run, yet I was just saying how I'd have a better chance of actually *selling* a stand-alone to a publisher since I'm an unknown writer.) I mentioned EUOL and Elantris as a case in point.

Anyhow, to my surprise, Ryan not only knew about Elantris but had an opinion about the Mistborn trilogy, saying how he'd "heard" it was better than Elantris. So of course I had to ask who his source was! I got rather excited because I thought maybe a new, positive review had come out. lol. Still, it's kind of cool to find out that you're friends with him.

My daughters are being brought up well.
"When are you going to finish your magazine, papa?" 6 and-a-half year old Elizabeth asked me yesterday.
After some initial confusion she explained that she wanted to see what I was doing with the pictures I took of my action figures.
So I connected Juno, and ten minutes later, when I actually could look at web pages, I pointed them at FPM
She started reading the comics to her sisters, understanding almost none of them.

However, "Galactus hungers!" and "I wanna be Ant-Man" are now favorite quotes among the children of my household.

Thanks. Yeah, I hadn't held out much hope that he'd actually ask me out! I half expected nothing to ever happen. For one thing, he asked my (former) roommate out last year--or tried to, anyhow. Sad to say, even though she wasn't seeing anyone, she said no ... and not in a very tactful way. :( Poor guy. (She swears she didn't flirt with him, but she could've fooled me!) I figured that he might be afraid of more of the same, you know.

Aaanyway, it helped that I invited him to my housewarming/b-day party. Also, I'm just lucky to have a gal friend who put in a few well placed hints when we three and one of his friends went to see The Da Vinci Code last week. Yay for friends! :D

I'm happy because there's only three more days of school left (counting today)! I'm also happy because I am finally able to get on the computer in the morning and just relax instead of having to worry about doing homework. And to make it better I pulled it off with a 3.0, which even though it isn't as high as I would have liked it's still good (especially when you compare it to my family).

Sometimes you get more than you bargained for--and it's awesome. When I called my new landlord to see if he could do a spring cleaning of the old A/C in my place, since it's super dusty, etc., he said how about a new one? With a remote. Sweet! So he's going to come doublecheck the measurements and order a brand new one. Hooray!!

I know it's kind of backwards to be happy about this, but I woke up today to a gentle rain and thunder storms. It cleared up and was sunny this afternoon for a while, but now it's raining again and we're getting a great show of lighting and thunder. So I'm sitting here with all the lights off in my room watching the storm and (finally) getting around to installing Open Office.

So, I am going with a friend to watch E.T. at an outdoor theater at an actual country club. Huh, me, at a country club?! Kinda weird. But at least I'll be doing something suitably nerdy with my Friday night. :)

Edit: Oh, and I'm also debating whether I want to go see a special midnight showing of Serenity here in Boston in honor of Joss's b-day. Sponsored by the New England Brown Coats, no less. Maybe I can round up some people...

I've finally developed several rolls of film that have been hanging around at the bottom of my purse for about six months. Therefore, there are new pictures of old events up at my gallery (norroway.thelemur.net), including pictures of the kitten I got back in March who I named Tildrum (http://norroway.thelemur.net/view_photo.php?set_albumName=The-Kits&id=418755_R1_16_26).

There are lots and LOTS of kitty pictures in that album, by the way. Sorry for kitty overload, if you get annoyed, but it's your own fault if you click.

Also, I'll be posting pics from LTUE 2006 geekfest night soon. Perhaps not tonight. I walked over seven miles today all told (18,253 steps, to be precise, according to my pedometer) due to 4th of July/Taste of Chicago activities, and I'm about ready to drop. And I have to drive home to Galva in the morning in time for the 4th parade there--I want to check out the high school band and see if they've improved with the new band director. We'll see!

Something that could have been very grumpy got turned into a happy thing.

My tire was looking pretty flat on Monday. After work, I went to put air in it--and noticed there was a nail in the tire. Dang! I don't even know how to change a tire.

Luckily, my brother and I had planned to do lunch on the 4th, so he came over and changed the tire for me the next day. He also showed me how to do it (not that it'll mean I can. I tried to unscrew the lugnuts--they wouldn't budge for my puny arms. So I'm still going to need a strong guy to help me). Then he recommended a place to get the tire fixed. I went there today. I was anxious that by driving on the flat I had ruined the tire. Money is tight for the next couple of weeks, as I had to take time off of work for health reasons, and I was sad that I'd even have to pay for the patch, let alone a new tire.

But the tire was fine. And they didn't charge me a thing! I think it's because we'd bought my tires at the same type of car place. Or perhaps because I'm a hot sexy thing, and they got all chivalrous.

Either way, I was really happy.  ;D

I believe I've told you all what drum corps is and why I love it, but just in case you don't...  This would be great for me--to hang out with local people who also love corps, to get to be involved with local music (may not be great, but at least we're playing, right?), perform a few times a year, that sort of thing. I got to hang out with Tekiel, Tage, and MsFish today. I showed off my adorable house, we went to Cafe Rio for lunch (yum), and then to Liberty Park--one of my *favorite* places in Salt Lake. There, we fed the ducks and MsFish almost got eaten by large Canadian geese, we girls ditched Tage and hid in the trees, and we all waded in the waterpark and played on the super cool playground. It was a great day! Yay for good friends and fun times.

Though, I still am not sure I appreciated Tage picking me up and holding me over a fountain of water. But I got him back when I put him in a headlock and pulled him through the water tunnel. Yeah, we were pretty wet after that.  ;)

No it was fun, we showed up this morning to the Patrol boat, only to find it had left due to a snafu... so we got a nice bumpy ride all the way out to the PB on a boat from station little creek, think of that as the bumpiest back road you've ever taken at 60 miles per hour... then we got to the ship and had to climb a 60 foot jacobs ladder to the accommodation ladder and five more stories to get to the bridge after making a sweep of the decks. Oh and did I mention it was 93 and we wear dark blue and were weighed down with 30 pounds of gear plus vests... yay...

so yeah, out of breath...

I'm happy that I gave my manager notice today that I was leaving his employment. He's very mad about it and doesn't have very many nice things to say about me at the moment. Also it's kind of scary to not have any immediate employment offers.

On the other hand, it feels so empowering to let my horrible boss know how bad a manager he has been. Also, I get a chance to catch up on some much, much needed sleep (no more going a week on 8 hours or less). Plus, everything just feels right about this.

He hasn't called in DAYS and I was considering
sending my commando penguins to find him.

I'm happy because I keep hearing about htese commando penguins. And I think that *finally* there may be a battle that's entertaining to watch (where the ninja monkeys have to actually work to win, instead of slaughtering the opponenent in the first few seconds.

Yeah, and penguins can't stand the heat.

I'm excited for this weekend because my little bro. Cory (not the one in the MTC) is coming up to visit me this weekend! Yay! He's done with his summer job in GA installing security systems and now he's going to see Boston with me for a few days. whoo hoo!

I'm happy that I saw the movie The Devil Wears Prada. I enjoyed it. What's not to love? Fashion, hot boyfriend (Adrian Grenier makes me drool--I've loved him since Drive Me Crazy--he's really the only reason to watch that movie), and a story about being true to yourself. AND I was on a date, so I didn't even have to pay.  ;) And I really enjoyed Anne Hathaway in this movie. Yay--now I can like Anne Hathaway again!

I've also seen recently Talladega Nights--and I sincerely wish I hadn't. I did NOT enjoy it. Again, I was on a date, so it wasn't my money wasted, but still. I'd like to have that two hours of my life back--not to mention the brain cells I lost just by watching the idiotic thing.  :P

I was searching for something and came across some fun old threads, including an old Geek Girl (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=other;action=display;num=1145031782;start=0) (that I hadn't read and made me laugh--both the article and forum comments) and one of my own threads. (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=rantage;action=display;num=1138594108) I was touched by how nice everyone was to me on the "Kidnapped by Hippies" thread.

I have to say that I am happy and grateful for TWG! I'm glad I came back. I have a lot of friends on here and I appreciate all of you.  /mushy stuff

(On another note: Man, I need to get back onto a healthy diet. The hippie thread reminded me of that. It's time to recommit myself. Diet really affects my health, and I have to remember that, and actually live it.)

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

It's funny that you, a mere lawyer, mired in the minutiae of mundania pretend to understand the ways of gods.

Those gods who show off at the Garden of Gods are the gods who lack the power to do anything significant. They're just media whores.

I love my neice and nephew. And, when I took them to the park today, I officially became the coolest person in the world--well, the coolest adult on the playground, at least (and I say "adult" loosely). I kept coming up with really creative things for Owen and Ava and me to do, like play that we were rescue rangers and we had to save Owen from falling down the slide into hot lava or pretend that I was an evil super villian who would lock them up in prison (a net-like portion of the playground) where they could NEVER escape (which, of course, they did). Well, soon all the other kids on the playground wanted to play, too. And they were all trying to get my attention and get me to chase them or put me in jail and would get upset if I would take a break or go off to play with Ava (the two-year-old who needs more constant observance) alone. It actually got a little overwhelming, though it was flattering. I mean, my imagination and I were in demand. That doesn't happen everyday.

So, I felt validated. At least kids love me. And that is certainly true of Owen and Ava. I felt bad for my brother tonight when Ava cried inconsolably when I was leaving, howling my name as she struggled against my brother's arms and reached for me. (Her mom's out of town and that makes her a little more insecure, I think.) Yet, once again, I was flattered. Nothing like a child heart-broken at your leaving to make you feel loved.  ;)

I've written 2816 words tonight! Yay! I'm thinking maybe I need to join Jonowrimo, a pre-Nanowrimo informally run by a writer friend. Everyone involved gets a month and a half head start on Nano and has a goal to fulfill, whether that's finishing a first draft, hitting a deadline, or whatever. I think that's a great thing to do for experienced writers who don't necessarily want to start a new project for the month but like the discipline and community it gives them.

I envy you greatly. Even when I get completely out of debt (except student loans), I'll never be able to afford a house around here with the artificially inflated market. Even a complete dive of a wrecked house costs at least $250,000 around here. It's really quite ridiculous.

Congrats on the new home!
