Uh, just so you know, we usually don't re-start a thread until the original gets locked by a moderator.

So mods: someone lock the other Happy Thread so we don't have confusion and mass hysteria.  ;)

I've actually seen it where one person started a new thread that was identical to another, and they both went on at the same time for quite a bit, ending in an argument over which thread should be the one to be locked.  Entertaining.  I say we let that happen.

Yes, I remember that happening a couple of times. Well, I started the other thread, so perhaps I should go promote it.  ;)

Old thread locked.  Normally don't read these but was curious as to why a new one was started.

Post by: Kuntrey_Pilgrum on October 01, 2006, 11:09:26 AM
Because everytime I went to post on the old one, there'd be some 4-5 pages of other, random stuff I just HAD to read.I figured that after a dang 25 page thread, someone needed to start a new one. SORRY!   Now that I know about the whole moderator-thing, I promise to consider not doing this in the future. On a HAPPY THINGS note, I'm an aunt now! An aunt who has a 99 in HISTORY! [I got an 85 on my last test, and was fearing for my average.] BUT I AN AUNTIE K_B NOW!

so you're OCD. I'd recommend that not becoming a habit. Though at 25 pages it was probably ready for a lock.

anyway, most fights over new threads have involved moderators locking superfly nc threads, which, apparently, are beyond our ken.

That kid's good. I mean he got perfect on every one (unless I missed something) and that looked like a difficult song. I couldn't do ones half so difficult (granted I lost interest before I had really practiced. And the pad I got slid around the floor--really annoying. I should've invested in a better pad). But really awesome. And it's good exercise--better than kids just sitting there playing video games. So cute!

At dinner I said I was craving chocolate, but that I was just going to have to remain unsatisfied because there wasn't any in the house. (In general, we try not to eat anything with sugar.)

So, when my mom gets home from errands, she tosses me a bag of lindt lindor milk chocolate truffles.

I love my mom.  ;D

My three-year-old is officially potty trained! Yay! Naturally there will be the occasional accident, but nights are now dry and I can go out in public without sweating that he'll spring a leak.

All thanks go to Spider-Man (whose likeness adorns the kid's undies), the ultimate motivator.

I've got something super awesome too. Emerson backed down on trying to "cancel" my internship and thereby make me lose my scholarship. Oh, and if I had to withdraw from the credits, they wouldn't refund my tuition money, either. That meant I'd lose over $7K if they decided to make me pay for their mistake.

All this trauma over a stupid policy that they failed to tell me or even put in writing (namely, although an intern can be paid, "student interns cannot complete a credit-bearing internship with an organization that is their employer.") Heck, my intern coordinator didn't even know this. Yet he *did* know I was working at A&B and counting it as credit.

What bothers me is that Career Services did this "cry wolf" thing where they said it was a legal issue, a liability for Emerson if I was an employee where I interned. And yet, when I finally talked to the dept chair, he said he had received "new information" and legal wouldn't be involved because it's an "academic issue." Yeah, and a dumb one at that. Anyhow, the legal talk was just a smokescreen. grrrr.

But no matter. I have won! Yay, the terror has ended! :D

Way to get through the legal smokescreen, Shrain! Too many people avoid responsibility by saying that it's a legal issue when the only issue is their unwillingness to take action or change.

Although, for the record, there might have actually been a legal issue, but then they would need to talk to a lawyer who would have explained it to them and academics is above explanation.

Anyways, I'm glad things are working out for you Shrain.

"Whew!" is right, Spoooookla! Congrats on your neat bit of news too.

Thanks, Nessa! (I was sad you weren't on IM today 'cuz I could've told you then. But you're having connection problemos, huh?)

And, yeah, Lost One, most people don't. Once management starts tossing around the term "legal," it gets intimidating. I mean, the Career Services chick said stuff like, "Well, if our lawyer had his way, he'd yank you out of your internship right now." Um... gee, thanks, I thought. It's like she was trying to freak me out--which she kinda did. Anyhow, I guess I just wasn't willing to toss away over seven grand! So hooray for justice! Oh, and hooray for being able to breath again. :P

P.S. I'm also happy because I'm all done with grading freshman papers. woot! I'm an RA--a stipulation of my scholarship, which I still have. Yay again! *ahem* Sorry... I'd better quiet down and go to bed. It's midnight. And you know what happens at midnight. No, not the "Spirit goes to bed" crap, the pumpkin metamorphasis. sheesh.

So this was a toss-up between this thread and "Jobs and Stuff," but I'm so happy, I decided on this one. After being a temp *forever,* my job was posted two weeks ago. Today I got my offer letter and was officially hired. I finally  have health, dental, and vision insurance (starting Nov 1), 10 paid holidays, paid time off, and the best part, I got a $3 raise! Yeah. I'm so excited!

:D

I was just getting all nostalgic about when I used to look forward to dances. I think that ended about the time I hit 24 or 25. That was about when finding a dancing partner who knows what he's doing got more frustrating. Well, annoying would be the proper word. I rarely attend dances now, because once you're not a YSA anymore, church dances become weird. But I love going to specific kinds of dance events, like swing dancing and going dancing with friends. And I hope to get back into Irish dancing soon.

But good for you to like dancing! More boys should know how. And I mean the fun stuff--swing, Latin, all the kinds of stuff that involves dancing with a partner.

Though of course, I still want to go contra dancing someday and learn all the reels and such that are more group dances. And I want to learn the dances they did in Jane Austen movies, too.

or y'know, you could just have fun dancing, without following a style. Maybe it's your excessive demands that make you annoyed.
Title: Re: Happy Things 2006:Generation X [part deux]
Post by: stacer on November 03, 2006, 12:27:15 PM
Oh please. I don't have "excessive demands." I just happen to be a dancer who enjoys actually dancing.

Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on November 03, 2006, 12:34:58 PM
I guess what frustrates me about that is that I *can't* dance. Yet I used to enjoy dancing. Formalizing it ruined it for me. As well as people thinking I wasn't worth the time because I don't fit their mold of dancing.
Title: Re: Happy Things 2006:Generation X [part deux]
Post by: stacer on November 03, 2006, 03:00:03 PM
Hey, I enjoy just getting out and bopping around as much as the next person. It's not that. It's just that I also get bored with the move-around-in-a-circle mode of dancing. There's just so much more that you can do. And it's all about having fun. So I'm saying *add* the partner dancing and all that.

It's the old soul in me, I suppose. There were plenty of people in our parents' and grandparents' generations who just learned how to dance to a rhythm as a matter of course. I don't think formalizing it should ruin it anymore than literary criticism should ruin reading.

Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on November 03, 2006, 03:18:05 PM
I don't think that the literary criticism to formalized dancing is a valid comparison.

the "circle" dancing is to allow social interaction. I can't talk to you if I'm spinning you around.

We get to spend Thanksgiving with my family this year and I'm excited. Partly because my mother is a much better cook than my mother-in-law (one year, my husband's grandparents took everyone to Hometown Buffet for Thanksgiving...eeeekkk!). Even though it's a 7-hour drive with three little kids, it will be worth it for the homemade pie alone.

Hooray for the three of us! I can't wait to make some pies, even though the Bishop didn't say he wanted us to bring anything. Ryan is in this Thanksgiving dinner group too, so I'll see if he wants a ride. Anyhow, I love to bake, and now I have more time to do it!

Woot. I have, after trying time and time again to not fall asleep I have received my prize! I have gotten my new Creative  I-Trigue 3400 speakers. These things are rocking. And they're small so they aren't taking up as much room as my old set. Plus, it's a 2.1 sound system, so it came with one of them subwoofers things I don't know much about. It also came with a seperate dongle for the control of the volume! There's also this neat little holder for a Zen Micro so you can attach it to the speakers and play your music through them. Definately a great investment.

Quote
Fruitcake Elemental is indestructible.

At the end of your turn, Fruitcake Elemental deals 7 damage to you.

3: Target player gains control of Fruitcake Elemental.

Experiments intended to create the perfect holiday emissary resulted in a substance harder than darksteel and a fraction as merry.

My life is so weird right now, but it's a good, peaceful weird. Someone called me today that I completely didn't expect to call. I've spent the weekend tickling and tossing about both my nephews, and now I have a whole week ahead of me with nothing to do but knit, shop, recommend books to my sister, watch movies, and run back and forth between family members. The best part about it is that I'm letting go of feelings of obligation, and it feels so *good*, because then I can do what I want to do and not let certain family members guilt me into coming to them--perhaps once, in the 32 years they've known me, they can come to me if they want to see me. Sweet release from feelings of guilt toward people who rarely do anything for me.

Tangentially, being home (that is, hanging out at my sister's house) and not working at all for nearly a week has been SO refreshing. I'm almost unconnected--no IM access here at my sister's because they don't have wireless and hooking my laptop directly into their connection didn't work for some odd reason (it picks up the signal, but doesn't allow me to connect--they might have a password that their computer automatically remembers, I suppose, but they don't think they do. They think it's just that the connection is temperamental). Oh well, I can still check my email occasionally, and at least I was able to turn around a copyedit that needed to get to the proofreader while I was gone. But the best part is that unconnecting for a while allows me to reconnect in other ways, and it's been so good.

I finally got another shower installed in our house. Sure, it required ordering a special spout to add the shower to the bathtub only to find out that the pipe from the wall was too short, that then required me to find a creative way of lengthening the pipe and, after a few experiments with Copperbond epoxy, there is finally another shower so that when people like 42 come to stay, they don't have to use the shower off the master bedroom or take a bath.  I am also happy because now I have a bunch of tools that I'll probably never need for another project again but will inflate my status as a handyman because I've actually used them.

In addition, when shopping for said ego boosting tools, we found laminate flooring that was 70% off and they threw in a couple of extra boxes for free.  Now I get to re-floor the living and dining rooms in a couple of months, furthing the illusion that I know how to do home improvements.

Hmm. Do you know of anyone who might be interested in borrowing my own personal male-dominated nerd herd for a weekend? ^_~

I'm happy because my section of English 150 has been moved out of the testing center. Not only was the classroom funky and unable to meet the needs of the students, but there's kind of a bad karma about having a class in the testing center. Not that my new classroom is perfect. It's on the sixth floor of the SWKT and there's a chalkboard in the room--not a whiteboard. *shudders*

My daughter announced this morning, at no suggestion of my own, that she wants to be an editor when she grows up. She then got out a whole bunch of papers to begin her career.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I prefer writing, but editing is still related. On the other, at least she isn't writing Star Wars fan fiction where Jabba the Hutt wants to bake Leia into a cake with hair frosting and Lando and Han have to come save her anymore.

At long last, I am now officially an editor. A Junior Editor, to be sure, but my three years as a copy editor have finally gotten me to the next level.

Hooray!!!!

Everyone should keep someone around who makes them laugh.

I have my ferret--who got to go to the vet today for her yearly shots. Nefer doesn't like the vet very much, so this would perhaps be better suited for the grumpy things thread from her point of view. From my point of view, the general "Three Stooges" antics that ensued during the brief veterinary visit have been keeping me laughing all day.

There is nothing better then walking the beach at night, with palm trees blowing gently in the wind, warm ocean waves lapping at your ankles, and a full moon shining down. With my gauzy skirt, bare feet, and long hair, the happy honeymoon couples probably thought I was an escaped wild child, wading out into the water up to my knees at times, dancing across the rocks, and making friends with the stray cats. They probably were right--and wise to keep their distance.

The ocean puts me at peace. I feel so happy when I'm by it, like I'm coming home. I wish I could always be by the ocean.

I'm happy that my cousin is expecting twins.

This makes me happy because the chances of me having children that are twins have now been greatly reduced (unless I decides to have kids with someone who is a fraternal twin).

I'm also happy, or at least amused, that my parents are so upset about this new development. My parents have a little competition going with my uncle to see who has the most grandchildren. My parents were going to catch up this fall with 13. However, since my cousin is expecting twins, my uncle now pulls into the lead with 14. Considering my uncle only has 3 kids, and my parents have 8, I find the whole situation absurd.

Also, I'm happy that I'm not contributing to my parent's little competition.

Post by: The Lost One on June 12, 2007, 05:13:05 AM
If you're not contributing then your part of the problem!!!

The more interesting point is it is our cousin's fifth and sixth children. 42 and I are twins that are the fifth and sixth children for our parents. Note to self, stop at four.

Title: Re: Happy Things 2006:Generation X [part deux]

Actually the likelihood of a couple having twins increases after having a couple of previous pregnancies. Around the fourth or fifth pregnancy is the most likely time to end up getting twins. Course, you have to have a family history of twins first. If you are playing around with fertility treatments, anything can happen.

Other fun facts, around 0.3% of the U.S. population come from multiple births (twins. triplets, quadruplets, etc.) which has been increasing in recent years thanks to fertility clinics. However, most of these people are fraternal twins (or as I like to call them--fake twins). Only 0.07% of the population are identical twins (real twins) which has remained constant throughout U.S. history.

Like my rumored visits before, this is liable to change. Part of it depends on if I can find friends to stay with, and if people are in town. Otherwise, I'll wait until August. So, we'll see.  ;)

But I'm happy it's 2008 because.... I GET TO GO TO ENGLAND! (in April) Woo Hoo!  2 whole weeks with no kids, no husband, no obligations beyond getting on a bus and going to our next destination!

And it all happens in the same time period that all our tax information should come throught which makes it a double whammy! Cause that means my darling of a husband will have to do them!!!!! Whoop Dee Doo!

Okay, so I haven't been feeling very well since yesterday. Wrenched my back the other day. So I was considering taking a sick day.

But thanks to a major snow emergency, it would be pretty sucky to go in to Boston today. I've a feeling that my company would just tell us to go home early again, like they've done for the other huge storms. But, hey, considering I feel crummy, it's the perfect day for a snow day. Except I could really use a heating pad for my back. And who knows when my landlord's snow guy will come. Until then, my car ain't going nowhere. Oh, well. More alleve coming up...

I talked to my boss about working from home once my maternity leave is over, and not only did he say that that was okay, he's going to get me a laptop to use when I work from home too! This is great because we only have one computer and it's been really annoying when both my husband and I need a computer to use. And I didn't think he would get me a laptop because of the cost, so I wasn't even going to ask, but he volunteered that he would! Yay!

I just had my first interview with my new job. (Me interviewing people, not someone interviewing me). It went well all things considered and I feel a lot better about committing to working for the state.

Though it was a little discouraging that this family needs help making ends meet. It's a nuclear family of 8 (not unusualy for Utah) where the both parents and the 3 oldest children work 7 jobs beteen them and still they need assistance and qualified for food stamps and medicaid.

One of my bosses hasn't been harping on me as much as usual - in fact, where he used to allegedly say things about me behind my back (like calling me lazy) as well as hint at things then deny he was accusing me of anything, now we're actually having decent conversations where we can find a bit of common ground. He's also been giving me some compliments on my news and sports reporting - which is unusual at my station. It's been a huge weight off my back to not have to worry so much about him.

Of course, I may just not be hearing about things he's saying anymore... :P

lol. You know, I remember when my two brothers (Cory & Eric), who were about 10 and 8 at the time, got into a sledding accident. The local Jr. High had the most awesome hill--many, many yards of snow-covered bliss. Until they accidentally slammed into an electrical box concealed by the snow and went flying. Their friends had already left, and so they were alone. Nobody could see them from the road because the hill was so steep and broad.

Cory bruised his back so badly that he wasn't able to creep up the hill to the road until he prayed. Eric was in shock and when the paramedics were called by the guy Cory flagged down, they put a mini neck brace on him. The two of them were rather awed by being in the back of a real ambulance. heh. Silly boys.

When the dr. examined Eric, he said, "His leg is really bruised, and I don't like how quiet he is." this after trying to get Eric to talk to him. ha. I explained that he was always like that with strangers and even at home. Not a talkative kid. (Wow, how he has changed--he's on his mission now in El Salvador. So proud of him.)

The next few weeks were filled with bed rest, ice packs, pain relievers, and game after game of "Pogs" (remember those?), Uno, Nintendo, and other such pursuits. We were just so glad no permanent damage was done.

And I might be volunteering as an illustrator for my own student magazine which is also kind of exciting (it has about 5 or 6 issues a year at 10,000 distribution and is the largest student magazine in AUS) woot~!

So yes, Year or the Rat(?) is a year for big big things.  ;D

Oh and yes, ordering pizza online probably does rock~!

My left rear wheel came off on the freeway today and there was basically no damage and I came through the experience safe and sound. I even got the wheel back, after it rolled diagonally through 4 lanes of rush hour traffic and came to rest against the left concrete barrier. A CHP car wove across traffic to stop it, and a highway assistance guy ran out and grabbed the wheel (and a lug nut that was somehow still attached). They both said it was my lucky day.

Normally this wouldn't be happy, but I'm going back to school tommorow!  The best thing is, I don't have class until Monday, and I'll get to see all my friends from all over the country (the ones who didn't graduate) again, so that will be good.  And the dorms are going to be so good, because I can finally get away from this raging cricket infestation that is plagueing my house.  And I sleep in the basement, so it's ten times worse.  It's gonna be great to be sleeping in a place where you can only hear your roommate sleeptalking instead of chirping.

I know miyabi that kinda my own response to myself. But hey what are you gonna do, might as well do the crazy things while I'm young than regret having never done them when I'm old.

You know the funny thing is that I'm not. Ever since I had a kid with my best friend and then we didn't get together the last thing I have wanted is a relationship. Then I met this girl and I swear I fell in love. I feel like a tool. I feel like I'm in middle school and this is the first girl i ever liked. The only problem is there is an ocean in between us and no realistic way of doing anything about it. I guess Ill go for the two weeks and see what happens.

I am happy because my piano was delivered yesterday!  It's a Kawai 52" upright, made in 1990 (but looks and sounds new), with lovely touch and tone quality.  I practiced for over an hour last night, and even played a song this morning before leaving for work.  I think we'll name it Felix (after Mendelssohn, whose 200th birthday is coming up).  I'm so happy!

Thanks!  I've never owned a piano before, and haven't had regular access to one since I lived with my parents.  It's nice to be at it again!  We're going to throw a piano party in a couple weeks (to welcome it to the household), and serve black and white food and of course have lots of singing and chamber music and solos by all the guests.

I love having a piano. I grew up in a music-lesson-free household but I love having my children just wander in and play. My 9 yr old has figured out the Star Wars theme and related music, so that's what we have floating around our house after school gets out.  Once I no longer have toddlers in my home I want to learn to play the thing myself.  It sits there, tempting me all day long,"You can't play me, neener neener." :P

Yes, you definitely need to make that piano quit mocking you!  Do your kids take lessons?  You could probably learn a lot just by sitting in on the lessons and stealthily experimenting with their books while they're at school.  That is, if your toddlers cooperate and play quietly.  The nice thing about a piano is it's really hard to damage it by playing incorrectly (unlike, say, a violin), so you can experiment all you want.  Also, it's not your fault if it's out of tune (again, unlike a violin).  All you have to do is hit the right notes in the right order and it's bound to sound good.   :)

I tried for a while, but my two year old would scream and try to shove me off the bench whenever I got on.  So I've decided a toddler-free household is necessary first.  Its on my list of things to do when my kids are all in school.

Elizabeth will be 8 months old in 2 days. Today Karen was sitting on the floor. A quote from Karen's blog:
Quote
Elizabeth crawled over to my knees and started pulling herself up on them a she often does. Then she stuck her bottom in the air with her hands on my knees -- again this is something she does all the time trying to stand up. The amazing thing is that this time, instead of getting frustrated and sitting back down, or complaining till Mama held her hands to help her up, she just did it. She stood up all by herself! She stood there, a little hunched over, balancing, holding on to nothing but the black poodle in her arms, for about ten seconds -- long enough for me to say, "Mom! Look at her! Look at her!" Then she tipped forward into my arms and got showered with praise and kisses. She's been doing pretty well with standing next to things and has figured out how to move her feet to walk along an edge, but I thought it would be another couple of weeks before she'd stand unsupported, and even longer before she'd stand UP unsupported! My sweet little baby is growing up! :) My sweet little baby is growing up. :( It's an amazing thing.

I shouldn't complain about the things I cannot do because of the choices I made to do other, more worthwhile things.  I guess I feel like my youngest, who will be two in a week.  She gathers up all her blankets, her bottle, and then gets really mad she doesn't have a hand left to hold my hand to go down the stairs.  You can't do everything.  The piano will be there for years; my babies, only a little while.

ReaderMom, I like your attitude.  Good for you taking responsibility for your choices and being confident in them!  Someday I hope that you will get to play piano; just as someday I hope to experience the joys of motherhood.  In the meantime, we should each be patient and grateful for the blessings we have.  Thanks for that reminder.

Ookla, Karen, & Elizabeth - congratulations!  All those little milestones are so fun and exciting!

First of all I don't think I have low friendship standards. You said you don't know her very well. Well I would be her friend until she gave me a reason not to be and free dinner and bowling is a good starting point. Second forget the dinner and lets talk Sox game. This late in the season with the postseason on lock I would suffer the most annoying person imaginable. But thats just me. And I have done a good share of landscaping.

lol. Don't worry, I'm not taking advantage of her. The company picked up the tab. Not just because it was a farewell party for someone who worked at our company for nine years but also to give our two Permissions Depts a chance to mingle now that we're kind of merging. Open bar (I had a couple virgin daiquiris, YUM) and lots of free food plus TWO games of bowling. We all had so much fun. Well, except my boss, who is sort of a sour puss. (sigh) Eh, well. Hope I have a voice tomorrow. Oh, and I sure wish I'd bowled higher than the mid-60s! heh.

Just discovered that the parents of a girl in my RP group spent a significant amount of time roleplaying with Tracy Hickman, back before he had been published (and before he had joined TSR).  Evidently, some of their characters feature in a few of his books.  From what they tell me, Hickman was a very, very poor man then: Apparently his mother called him at one point and offered to let him come home, live in the basement and get a job at McDonalds...

Yeah that's hilarious! And its also not funny at all. I mean it wasn't warm enough to melt most of the ice and it dropped to the single digits this morning making the ice all that much harder. Other great news is that its going to rain tomorrow at around 44 degrees but then drop back down to like 15 for two days. Yay for the holidays.

I'm happy that the snow finally hit from the storm (the storm covering most of the western US) and dropped down a bunch of packing snow. After a week-long craving to build a sweet snow fort, I was able to....at least until my sister ditched me after 30 minutes. ::)

I'm also happy that it's Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone!
