Title: Horrorclix
Post by: Spriggan on February 03, 2006, 02:48:53 PM
WK is releasing a new CMG based off of classic and modern horror movies that's supposed to be more scenario based then pure combat that heroclix uses.

They're already said if it's a monster or horror related and in the public domain you can expect it, things that have been mentioned but not confirmed is Dracula, vlad, Frankenstein, Cuthulu.

Also they're planning collectors sets of IP characters like Freddy and Jason.  Here's hoping for an Army of Darkness set!

As for it;s compatibility to Heroclix there have been some confirmation that it was designed with that in mind but nothing more then that.

I sincerely hope that it's not compatible, because the flavor of the two genres is so different that I want them to have completely separate rules and dials and whatnot. And I'm very, very glad to see that it's a scenario-based game--that has a lot of potential, and is really the best way to do horror.

I agree, if they stick to the same old same old design with Heroclix they could be hindering themselves from creating an interesting scenario game.

I was thinking it would be cool to offer a glactus sized Elder God Cthulu for the game

The powers on his dial are printed in colors from beyond the scope of human comprehension.

He has no stats. He just eats 1D4 models a turn.

Have you seen the stats for Cthulu in the back fo d20 CoC?  More like eats 3d10 characters a turn.

yes but in heroclix you useally only have 4 characters on a team.

here's the low down from Bro_M on the WK forum:

Quote
1. HorrorClix is about 80% similar to HeroClix. That is to say that the games are similar enough that if you can play one, you can play the other; and you can play components from both together.

2. Both games share the same basic combat stats. Powers and Abilities are similar, but where HeroClix consolidates them on one sheet, HorrorClix powers are more character-specific and they are presented on individual character cards. Movement, combat resolution and figure point costs are in the same neighborhood.

3. Not all of the game mechanics work exactly the same. HorrorClix pieces are designed for a smaller sized map with more focus on scenario action, while HeroClix pieces are designed for a larger-sized map with more focus on a strategic game.

4. Additionally, there are mechanics of HorrorClix unique to that game, and parts of HeroClix unique to that game. Players who want to play the two systems together will have to make some of their own adaptations, and those adaptations will not be officially supported by WizKids. The games were not playtested together, and there may be "broken" combinations that we cannot take responsibility for.

5. There will be no mixed HeroClix and HorrorClix tournaments, and there will be no rules to officially support the mixing of the two games.

That's s good way to do it--far enough apart to keep their uniqueness, but close enough that you can bodge them together if you want to.

The set will primarily be original characters, but they're planning at least one collector's set using licensed characters, and you can vote on which licenses you want them to chase: http://forum.wizkidsgames.com/survey/index.php?sid=71

I voted for the classic monsters, Alien, Ghostbusters, and X-Files, with a semi-nod to Predator and Buffy as well.

What? You didn't vote Army of Darkness?  I don't think we can be friends anymore.

I'veseen it, and I admit that Ash would be cool, but none of the other characters excite me. I'd rather have those other sets.

From replays on the forum it looks like Buffy and X-Files are in the lead.  *Sigh* if Buffy wins I'll never spend money on the game.

Also it looks like WK doesn't have a single license for the collectors set yet, that's why there are so many choices.

I must say that my leading choice would be Army of Darkness, but the 80s slashers would be a close second
who wouldn't love a clix of Freddy or Jason?
Title: Re: Horrorclix
Post by: Spriggan on February 09, 2006, 03:08:33 AM
I wouldn't. Just like I don't want a Buffy one, or about half of the things on that list.
Title: Re: Horrorclix
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 09, 2006, 12:30:41 PM
There are only a few of the properties on the list that I wouldn't love to have some clix of, if only for collector's purposes. A HeroClix version of Buffy would be dull as all crap, but if the scenario aspect of Horrorclix comes across as well as we hope, Buffy could be cool. Not as cool as Aliens or Ghostbusters, but still cool.

Ghostbusters clicks would rock though.

Damn people, you don't think sending deep ones and Elder Things against sarah michelle geller would be hilarious? Just imagine her mind crumbling under the horrifying, baffling concept of 4 dimensional maths that the Elder Things possess.

Actually, it gives me a headache as well. Damn 4D maths.

Cthulhu is being released this summer, but it looks like he's only available to retailers

EDIT: looks like people can buy him for $89 while retailers get him for free.

"retailer orders 2 cases of boosters and 1/2 a case of starters they will receive a giant sized Cthulhu. Giant meaning Galactus and Spectre sized. The fig is going to be huge with all the wings and the tentacles and good stuff. Retailers will receive the fig for launch so preordering is key to get it. Best part is that the horrorclix systems are 80% compatible with HeroClix, so you can have a godlike smack down between the three biggies. More in a bit on WizKids stuffs. "

well I guess I should reword that *free*, retailers get him for free *if* they buy a certain amount of product.

You might, WK doesn't have the best track record of supporting games that don't sell really quick in the first month or two.  Every game they've launched since Pirates has been dropped or isn't selling well enough but nothing has been formally announced just like how Shadowrun, crimson skies and creepy freaks have yet to have a formal axing.

Cthulhu will be the Horrorclix click-brick mail-a-way figure though you still have to pay the $85.  So to get one as a player you're looking at spending about $200.  Tempting but I don't think I'll be taking WK up on this offer.

The rules for Horroclix have been posted: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/horrorclix/howtoplay.asp

This is only the rules, not the Powers and Abilities card, but it still look spretty cool. I was really impressed with the new ways they've found to use the dial: for example, a lot of the monsters start out in a weaker state, and have a power called Transform that lets them click up to a more powerful one, kind of like leveling a figure in Mage Knight Dungeons.

They've also added a feature called hourglasses replacing certain stat numbers, which represents that a monster is temporarily intangible, or mindless, or whatever; at the end of each turn in which a monster shows an hourglass, you click it down once. The two examples they gave were a ghost who floats around ominously before suddenly manifesting and attacking, or a zombie who advances really slowly and gets knocked down all the time (I imagine that a zombie might have hourglasses on ever other click, to show that every time they get hit it takes them a while to get going again--very zombie-like).

The game also includes plot cards, a standard ability to move and attack once you've claimed your first victim, and some other pretty neat innovations. It doesn't look like a deep strategy game, the way Dreamblade does, but it looks like a cool beer and pretzels type thing. I'm impressed.

As for Cthulhu...dang, that's tempting, even at $200.

More shots of Cthulhu: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=40709

I really need to find a way to get one of these.

Okay, that Cthulhu is rather cool. So cool that I'm nearly sure cheerleaders will start carrying that sculpt around.

I want to buy the model, put it on top of a monolith, and dance around it in unspeakable eldritch rituals. I suppose some cheerleaders can come if they want.

Horrorclix licenses Aliens vs. Predator: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=40856&frame=company

Yeah, it's a stupid movie, but a nice way to get two of the best sci-fi properties available in one shot. I'm excited. I can't imagine people buying entire bricks of this, though.

They have a demo of this at Dragon's keep and based off the demo alone I wouldn't buy the game.  Not because of rules or anything but because these demo's only have 2 figures in it so you only play one against the other and they aren't balanced so it's not very fun.  Basically it's a werewolf and a vampire, the werewolf only needs to kill one bystander to become awesome while the vampire needs several.  So its more or less over in like 3 turns.

I've heard of Horrorclixand I think they look really cool. I've only started playing Heroclix a couple of weeks ago, and I love it. I got a DC: Hypertime starter set, 1 Fantastic Forces Booster, One Mutant Mayhem Booster, and 2 Marvel Universe 2 Packs. I'm not sure when the Horrorclix comes out, but I'm thinking of buying a set.

I played Horroclix at a shop in a town close to me,  and I f ell in love with it. The Evil Clown and Werewolf versus the Brine Witch and Vampire, and I won with the Vampire left. First ever game of anything with the word Clix in it.

I can't wait to buy it, and especialy get the AvP set. Film sucked though, and I intend to correct this. Alien versus Predator. Who wins? We do. Whats the tagline? Whoever wins, we lose. Er....riiiiiiiiight.

By the way, first post  :P

Ah, clix clix clix.  It's good to see some interest in the games, and a team article up today.  I sold my figs because of my low tolerance for collectibility/obsoleteness but still think the games are a blast.  I'd be interested in seeing firsthand what kind of twist horroclix takes on the clix idea.

Although, I've had a think, and thought that the game might be cool if you could play as the 'victims'. Imagine re-enacting Friday 13th with a Zombie Cop...

Hmm. I still think its a good idea  ;D
