This seems like the appropriate thread for this...

I was substituting in an orchestra class today and for the last 15 minutes of class time the kids had time to study for the final.  So I noticed four guys move towards the back and bust out some magic decks.  When I got back there and asked them what kind of final they were studying for they told me that those were their flashcards.  When they learned that I know how to play a little they were pretty excited and invited me to join them (one kid had a spare deck) but I told them I was working.

As I walked away they commented that subs that know how to play Magic are "the coolest."  But I suppose that had to do with the fact that I let them keep playing...

Is it just me or is Scourge way out of balence with the other expansions.  I was reading through the card lists today and couldn't beleve how psycho it was.  Defantly not fair for someone to be useing scourge if no one else is.  It unbalances the game now that these cards are out.

I actually think it's very balanced. What cards are you referring to specifically?
Title: Re: Scourge
Post by: Prometheus on July 24, 2003, 12:29:40 AM
If anything is happening, it is more of a rebalancing effect. The high quality large-size creatures, the mana acceleration and the 'highest casting cost' cards in Scourge are merely a way of finally making expensive cards worthwhile. Even in our sluggish 100/3 games, the small cards usually made more difference than the occasional Devouring Strossus or whatever we would throw out. It's just too easy to kill big huge creatures. Terminate takes care of any non-protection from red/black creature in the game (at least for a little while) and cards such as Wrath of God ect can kill anything else.

The only thing that Scourge has provided us in the way of biggness is to tempt people to actually go for the big boys in spite of the difficulties. Keeper of the Nine Gales can handle a Dragon Tyrant anyway.

Now that Prometheus is allegedly back online, I'm pleased to announce a Scourge draft game! I've got all the cards, and I'm assuming that the game will include the following people (the same group we had last time):

Fellfrosch
Prometheus
EUOL
Tiger
Spriggan
Lovebasket
GuJiaXian
Brenna

If you read this, please email me with your availability. I'll be contacting you all individually, just in case. I'd like to do it this weekend, probably in the evening at the Cottontree, but everything depends on when we can get everyone together.

What's a draft game?

I'd love to participate as I am going to be in UT this weekend (at least for the beginning of it) but I'm going to be moving furniture into my new place for most of the time.  I haven't played since I left the Happy Valley.

I'm fine for anyday this week in the evening

Sweet. I even have Saturday off.  ;D

I'm in. When are you going to be in town Kije? It'd be fun to hang out before the booster draft if that works with your schedule.

Oops. I missed Kije's question.

A draft game is a game with 8 players who sit around a table and open booster packs. One pack is opened by each person in each of 3 waves of pack opening, and then each player selects one card that they want to use in their decks. They then pass the remainder to one direction (left, right, left respectively for each wave or something like that) When everyone is done, everyone puts their deck together, then have a tournament.

I probably missed something important, but that's the basic concept.

I'm going to be pretty booked.  We (my fiancee, my brother, and I) arrive Thursday am sometime, and leave Friday night.  In between that we have to unload all our stuff (we're taking a uhaul trailer,) load up my soon-to-be brother-in-law's stuff, catch a couple of appointments in SLC and a wedding reception (not ours) in Springville, run around begging school districts to hire me, help my brother find an apartment, and I imagine we'll try and fit some sleeping in on Thursday night.

I'll be back in Utah mid-August to stay, though, so there'll be time for stuff then, I'm sure.  We'll be living in north Orem.  And by then I will be married (life never ceases to amaze me.)

btw, if Jeffe or MoD are reading this, I'd be interested in your observations of newly-wedness, it being a fairly recent experience for both of you.

Friday night would be better for me. I'm getting off at 6:30 PM. I do have Saturday off, but there's a conflict with that time.

Do we have a day/time yet? Next week is radically worse for me. (brother's marriage) We need an answer soon...

It's not going to be this week, and apparently next week is bad...Saturday the 16th could work for me, if it's late evening. What say ye?

Evening in two weeks...when? Do we have our staff of drafters available yet? A time? 42 and I typically roleplay on Saturday night, but we may be able to reschedule or something with enough advance warning. Might be able to snag another player or two if need be as well.

Scourge is fun. This is going to be great.  :)

Fell's out of town so let me answer the best I can.  Yes he allready has the boosters, and if he gets back from his camping trip with enough time then we'll have it this saturday at the cotten tree.  We won't know for certain till probaly Friday.

Well, shoot. While out of town I realized I hadn't spoken to EUOL yet, and now it turns out he and Tiger are unavailable. Any suggestions?
Title: Re: Scourge
Post by: Prometheus on August 14, 2003, 11:08:22 PM
No players implies no booster draft unfortuneately. I'd still like to play something if anyone else is interested, but I'm not sure what. Fell could show us how to play Heroclix, or we could just play Magic anyway...meet online for some computer game or another.

Or we could just do nothing again, but that hardly seems Timewasteful. Did you get those reviews, Fell?

Next week is bad for me and EUOL, just FYI.

Okay, how about this. I've confirmed the following people for Saturday night: Fellfrosch, Spriggan, Prometheus, Brenna, and GuJiaXian. On top of that, 42 has expressed interest in playing, which would give us 6 people. Why don't we all meet at the Cottontree at 10 pm and do a team sealed game? It's basically like a sealed deck, only instead of building one deck you have to build three, and then we do a quick tourney to see which team built the best decks. I will provide the cards: each team gets an Onslaught tourney pack, 2 Legions boosters, and two Scourge boosters. You won't be able to keep a card, like we usually do, because one of the sealed decks technically belongs to Mustard and he and I have an prior engagement with them, but at least we can play some magic and try something new and different (and a real tourney format, no less). We will postpone the Scourge draft until a later date when EUOL and Tiger can accompany us.

How does that sound to everybody?

well I'll allready be there so sounds good.  But honestly I'd rather learn howto play clix then just play non booster-draft magic.

Post by: Prometheus on August 16, 2003, 01:26:16 AM
Sounds fun. I'd still like to find some time to play Constructed (even with some goofy rules) and trade Magic cards as well---we haven't done that in forever. Constructed has some real problems too, but it is, at least, less expensive to do the playing part of it.

Post by: Fellfrosch on August 16, 2003, 02:25:05 PM
That's fine with me. I don't know what decks I have built, but I'll bring my cards and I'll bring my clix...and I'll bring several pre-cons for LotR and the new Star Trek CCG. We'll amuse ourselves.

OK for those of you intrested, we're going to try and have our Scourge booster-draft friday the 29th.  No time has been set but it will be late again probaly 9 or 10 PM.

Fell was talking about going to the Morridin Prerelease as a group a little bit. Do we know when it is yet from the rumor mill sites? I've already tried wizards.com and they still have their Scourge page up. I need to try and schedule that day off work as far in advance as possible. (Assuming people actually want to go. I don't feel like going to Morridin if it's just me.)

I've already budgeted for it, so count me in. I'm pretty sure it's September 20, and I think we should get as big a group as we can.

Well, folks, I have left the emerald hills and the deep blue of the Pacific and have come to live in Orem.  I'm pretty sure I'm free on the 29th (let me check with my wife) and so...is it too late to join?
Title: Re: Scourge
Post by: Fellfrosch on August 22, 2003, 06:42:28 PM
Depends. We already have 8, but I'll be amazed if all 8 of them can make it. 42 is also interested, so you and he are in the alternate slots. No matter what, though, you should definitely come anyway--Tage usually comes just to hang out and watch, and drafts are pretty entertaining no matter which side of the issue you're on.

Wizard's website says Sep. 20th now. The managing organization's website isn't reflecting the new info yet that I can see, and the location appears to have been changed, but that's pretty official lookin to me.

I'm not going to be working this friday, EUOL is.  And Micah has the shift before him. So all you have to do is convince EUOL to show up to work a bit early.
Title: Re: Scourge
Post by: Fellfrosch on August 28, 2003, 11:41:43 PM
Okay, the day has arrived--Friday, August 29, at 10pm in the Cottontree.

Coming as normal:
(These people will play for free and take home the common or uncommon of their choice at the end of the night)
Fellfrosch
Prometheus
Tiger
Spriggan
Brenna
GuJiaXian

Maybe not coming and/or staying the whole time:
(We'll find out when we get there)
42
EUOL

Coming and bringing their own packs:
(They'll write down their cards as they open each pack, to make sure they get them back at the end of the night.)
The Megan formerly known as Schoonover
Megan's husband J.T.

Interested in playing if possible:
Lieutenant Kije

So what this means is that we'll probably have more than 8 people. 42 is leaving early and might decide to either play or just watch, and EUOL might be getting there late if he has a hot date, which would put him out of contention. If one (or both, I suppose) of them is gone, Kije is in. If Kije or anyone else would like to buy their own packs, he's more than welcome to jump in no matter how many people show up (so bring your wife, Kije). 8 is the ideal size for a tournament draft, but I don't think it will screw us up too much to have a slightly larger group. And if the "buy your packs" idea works out, we can do drafts more often.

We had some discussion earlier about a constructed deck bout. Is anyone else still interested? I have some new decks that need some grinding.
