Title: Netdraft
Post by: Fellfrosch on October 09, 2003, 06:34:28 PM
There's a new version of a shareware program that allows you to play Magic draft games online--and while we're at it, they're testing the newest version of a non-draft Magic program. These are both free, and sound like they could be a good way of bringing together various TWGers from across the world. There's no channels or matching service--it's all direct connections from computer to computer--but we can work out those details pretty easily.

Who's interested?

I would actually be prepared to play Magic if i could try it out like that. Maybe we should arrange to have everyone connect using that Netdraft program?

I could be in.

Ok. I've got that installed (not hard) and I'm trying to figure out how to use it. Problem is, I'm not entirely certain what IP address I or anyone else is at in order to make a connection...problems, problems. Anyone awake out there?

on a windows box you can run winipcfg (just from the run command in the start menu) and that should, among other things, tell you your ip number. I don't think that works on XP or 2k, but does on all others. nslookup shoudl work on your 2k or XP box.

Hehe. I guess I should have explained better. That gives me my local DHCP configuration within my router's local system, but that's not very useful, I think, in helping other people connect to me. And this neat little app I downloaded doesn't have a manual to it.

The Apprentice version of the game has this fun little line attatched to its manual though. "The host of the game will need to present their unique IP (Internet Protocol) address to the person joining." That's the sort of thing I'm worried about. Winipcfg doesn't give me that, unless I'm reading the tool wrong.

oh, so NOW you want me to be smart about it. I haven't looked at the app. Does it need anything other than the host's IP? if so, then we might not have to muggle about with everyone's IP.

As far as I can tell, all you need is the host's IP--and as far as I can tell, Netdraft tells you what your IP is when you open the host window. what I can't figure out is how to set it to "Listen" for people trying to connect to you.

If we can figure out how that works, I'd be happy to host a game. We'll arrange a time, I'll tell everyone my IP via Instant Messenger or something, and then you can all connect. Sound good?

sounds yummy to me.
I guess that means I should get around to downloading the client.

OK. We'll try the simple case first, though I don't really think this'll work. I started up a Netdraft game this morning at IP 192.168.1.101.

If anyone can reach me with that information, great. I'm just going to leave it open while I'm out for the day.

I'm out today, but now that I think about it, I'm out almost every day until December.  Oh well, maybe then.

I can connect to your game.

Not surprising, since we're on the same local network. Did anyone else try?

Sorry, I haven't had a chance to check the boards since friday morning. should we try again?

Me, Spriggan and SE are testing it now. The way it works is thus.

You either use the built in editor in Apprentice, or use netdraft to build your decks. Then you use Apprentice to play. Netdraft works fine for us 3, but Spriggan has had to quit (since he's leaving work, the slacker) and SE has slow download so we have not tested Apprentice yet.

You can build a deck in apprentice too, so you don't have to play a draft game. However, Apprentice does NOTHING for you but show where the card is and if it's doing something. You have to keep the rules on your own. It only keeps track of life

I thought that was going to annoy me, since it actually only displayed what your life is, you had to change it yourself.

But really, it's just like regular magic, without the artwork. So it's a nice enabler still. After all, you ARE playing magic, at times when you normally couldn't, with people you normally couldn't, and with cards you may not even own. So it's kinda cool.

Just be warned that the prebuilt decks are mega powerful. Spriggan used one against me, it wasn't right pretty. Otherwise, it was good. The bugs me and SE encountered didn't show. It is pretty good fun.

Idea!
We could do a online tournament with this. I know you Utah people don't need an online tourney, but i like planning this sort of thing out. Anyway, up to 8 people meet and use Netdraft to get their cards, between 3 and 6 packs worth. That's done in a interface where a list of cards appear and people choose them, and only when each person chooses one do you move onto the next card. Then a game is played, after the decks are made and assembled, and it's done with winners then playing each other and losers playing each other. Since its online and the decks are saved, we use the security codes to make sure people don't change the deck between games and can simply arrange times for the next round of games on the forum.

It would be easy to plan, more difficult to get the times sorted. But pretty fun. And it costs nothing for the cards.

I'd be up for something like that. I'll have download Apprentice, then, I guess.

If the times work out I'd be up for it too.

Hey, a thought here: at the download site it advertised a feature on one of the programs that would allow you to print a copy of a card (a Netdraft version) to use in play soi you wouldn't ruin your cards in actual play.  Now someone like me sees this and says why do I have to buy the cards in the first place?  I could just build any old deck I pleased because I've got all the cards right there.  Would it be anathema to most players to play against someone who built a deck like that, as someone who is in it to play and not to collect?

Well I'd be interested in joining, apart from a few things:

1. I havn't played Magic in several years, and I'm quite sure the rules have changed substantially. In other words, I don't quite know what I'm doing.

2. Being in Australia, I run at completly different time to everyone else. Not too much of a problem, as I see lots of people logged into the forum at 11am, which is easy to work with.

3. My connection is terrible slow. Well, a crappy 56k winmodem that does 40k on a good day. Making online play hard, especially since I need to bring myself to stop my downloads.

If someone can suggest a workaround, I'd be in.

1) The first time i ever played magic was against SE and Spriggan. The fact that i got owned may have some association to this. But anyway, if i can pick up the rules in 2 games, you shouldn't have a problem. I'm stupid for a start.

2) I'm +7 hours ahead of everyone. We will figure something out. For instance, everyone logs onto the forum around 2:30 pm here. Thats morning there i suppose.

3) SE was on a 56k, its not like magic is a bandwidth heavy game or anything.

Ok, I guess I'll be in then. I'll just go and get Netdraft and Appentice within the next couple of days. It does sound like fun, even if I do expect to be owned, and need to relearn the rules.

actually, the BEST time for me would be in the evening. About 15 hours from now (8:30pm in utah, 10:30 east coast, and if I'm not mistake, that's like 3:30 am Greenwich... but I'd still be up for a morning game every now and then, I just can't focus on it because I have little girls and job hunting to do.

Ok, this is good. To help align the times, it's now 10:12 PM for me in Australia.  So in 15 hours, it's about 1pm.

up for a game after I read my kid a book?
that means you're about 14 hours ahead of me (or 10 behind? I'm pretty sure ahead).

Sorry, no. I havn't downloaded Apprentice yet, and I get disconnected from my ISP in 15 minutes, after which I'm going to bed. Next time, though, I'm up for it.

You could with card stock but you have no graphics (pictures for mana, tapping and the artwork itself) and no flavor text.  Also the back of the card would be blank.  You couldn't use them in turnamants, and a lot of people a gaming stores probaly wouldn't let you play with them.  If you found a place that includes pictures and artwork then Wizards would like to know so they can sue them.

Woah...that apprentice program is pretty good. It randomises  boosters and starters, so you conceivably start a league thing without any money, and assigning boosters for wins or something.

I'm on for the next three and a half hours if anyone wants to play or something. After that I'm watching Iron Chef...It just started over here!

Well, whilst I wait for midnight, I've set up a game on apprentice, using one of the precons in it. I'm currently waiting for a call at 171.75.39.189
