Title: Silent Storm...
Post by: Onion of Death on February 02, 2004, 06:21:43 PM
Absolute perfection. Seriously.

I'd like to thank this site for informing me about this game. It's incredibly good, I especially like the open-ended mission structure.

The real question now is, "Do I go for the sniper shot, or throw this hefty load of dynamite at him?"

If you have to ask whether or not to snipe someones head into  few different pieces, there's a problem.  By the way the answer would be, SNIPING IS THE WAY TO GO!
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: House of Mustard on February 02, 2004, 07:31:56 PM
My question is:  why are you using a sniper rifle if you're close enough to throw dynamite?

Post by: Onion of Death on February 02, 2004, 08:27:49 PM
HOM, I'm talking about having two different characters. One could run up and throw the dynamite, the other could snipe the target. It doesn't matter anyway, I blew him and his little office up with the dynamite.

I would prefer to do both. Caution pays off in the end.

you mean snipe him, then sneak up and blow his corpse to heck with the dynamite?

Almost as good as the Halo victory dance.

I'd like to mention that there's still several days left to win your own free copy of Silent Storm. I know that everyone thinks my contest is stupid, and I'm sorry (it's my first one, really), but you'll have to suck it up and submit anyway. I promise that my next contest (for a retail copy of Spellforce) will be much cooler. I hope.

But enough tangents: Silent Storm is awesome, and you want it! Enter now!

My entry is already being written, and man is it awesome.  Just give me the game now.

Yeah, I keep meaning to get to that. So I can have a game I can't play so HoM can't have it.

Very mature.  And noble.  And honest.  And redeeming in every way.  I should find this contest which is spoken of on the main page and win just so Saint Ehlers can't have it to stop House of Mustard from having it.

I need not ninjas.  I am one.  You aren't hiring, are you?  I have an extensive Okinowan fighting knowledge and am good at sneaking around stuff and hiding, ect.  I can so splinter cell my way into someones house and drip cyanide down a wire into their throat whilst they sleep... If you aer hiring I accept payment in american dollars, cheese, Homestarrunner.com stuff, and/or quiznos subs and coke, or kool weaponry like sais, I have yet to get a pair of those.

I think i should win, just so that Fell has to pay for air-mail to Britain.

Or he could just say he sent it air mail and keep it for himself...

"It must have gotten lost over the atlantic!   TAKE THAT YOU SLIMBALL!  DYNOMITE UP THE, no I'm not playing silent storm, I, uh, am in a gang war..."

Na I should get it, I did help him move last weekend.  And he got 2 copies of the game.  The review copy, which he kept, and the one he's giveing away.

Yeah, but I helped him move out too, and then I drove up to Logan and helped him move in.  I even helped him carry the piano up the stairs and pulled a muscle in the process.

Then again, I'm family so it's not like I couldv'e really said no.

You know what would make this game like 1000x better than it already is? If there were animals that I could strap dynamite to, and send at the enemy. That would be great...
Title: Re: Silent Storm...

I don't know if that would fit in with the WWII setting, but it's a really cool idea. Maybe in Fallout Tactics....
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: GorgonlaVacaTremendo on February 04, 2004, 05:21:26 PM
No, animals fit PERFECTLY in the WWII setting, I'm not sure how.  But if Onion says it, it must be true.

Title: Re: Silent Storm...

Hey kids, all you need to do is turn to your history books.

The russian army experiment with dogs: they strapped bombs to their backs and trained them to run under tanks--some had magnetic switches that exploded when they came close to that much steel, and others had long poles sticking straight up that would explode when they bent (crawling under a tank).

At one point, they had over a thousand dogs trained to do this kind of thing.  They stopped, however, when (and I'm not making this up) they ran under more Russian tanks than German tanks.  They'd been trained on Russian tanks.

Yeah, i knew about that mustard.

One trick mentioned during roleplaying last night is to throw a double ended lightsabre that can be remotely activated. Train a dog to chase it, it go grabs it, and then activate it. It runs back to you, with a lightsabre beam at both sides at knee height...

That makes my theory about the Russians possibly taking over the world in the next 20 years. Anyone who using small animals as high-yield explosive devices should be crowned Emperor of the World. Or, even better, God.

So today I threw a grenade at a crowded group of enemies. One of the soldiers who was hit flew threw the air, hit his one of his comrades, knocked him to the ground, and died. I have never seen anything so glorious ever before in my life.

I flaked, actually. Partially because we celebrated my daughter's birthday last night, and I was down, and I had to pound my wife's Egyptian forces into the ground
Title: Re: Silent Storm...

Well, here's to hoping I was the only one.  Instead of coming up with something new, I pulled out the outline of a historical novel I was working on two and ahalf years ago.  I was amazed at how much it sucks.  It's very unimaginative and derivative, and if anyone else entered, I'm sure I would lose.

I wrote mine up, but my computer crashed when I tried to save it.  I had school the next day so I decided I would just go over to onion's house and play his copy whenever I wanted too as compared to not being able to get up the next morning...

No. There will be no coming to my house and playing any of my games. So there. HA!

For those interested, the winner of the Silent Storm contest was...House of Mustard! Don't cry nepotism: he won because he was the only entrant. Here I am giving out free games and only one guy can get off his duff and ask for it. You've got another shot with Spellforce, so I expect a lot of entries. Go team!
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Spriggan on February 17, 2004, 10:52:54 PM
probaly the main reason you only got one entrie is that the contest was very unfriendly to the casual browser/viewer, and so is this current one.  You might get more submissions this time becasue the topic isn't as strange and time consumeing, but still you're asking people to spend a few hours doing something to qualify for the contest.

Wah wah. We're giving out a $50 game here, I think a few hours of works is hardly out of the question. I admit that the last contest was a little wacky, but webcomic reviews? Anyone can do that.
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Spriggan on February 17, 2004, 11:15:59 PM
eh, I think that defeats the point of contests, which is to draw attentoin to the site.  The most work I've ever seen a videogame website require for people to enter a contenst is to fill out a survey. I do think most people (ie the ones that come to the site, but don;t hang around in the forum) will be turned off by it.  But it's your site and you can do what you want.  But might I suggest you actualy require the reviews be of a comic not in our database and be a certain length.  How the rules are now I can write one that's 10 sentences long and be entered into the contest.  You should also say how the winner will be determined (ie randomly, voted on ect).  For one thing it help us in the event a staff member wins and other people had entered loose then cry foul.  and second you know what you, as the contest supervisor, is expecting from the entries.

well, he did recommmend either following the established format or to cover the basics really well. He did also already state the criteria: completeness, insightfulness, and entertaining value.
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Spriggan on February 18, 2004, 07:50:46 AM
Ya noticed that after the post, but he should mention who the judges are.

See the reason I'm mentioning this stuff is that if we're going to start doing contests we need to make sure the rules are clear and all that mumbo jumbo, I beleave we're required by law to have certain things.  The more things that are there for people to follow the less of a chance of someone crying foul.  I know we're not a huge site, and that just about anyone who would enter the contest we know through the forum, but we should plan on that not happening.  We need to make these as legit as we can, I know I'm just repeating myself, but this is important.  Fell needs to sit down and figure out some general guidelines that most of these contests should follow so he can just reuse them.  And, dare I say it, staff members should not be allowed to enter.  If he dosen't do these things there will be trouble in the future.

Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 18, 2004, 08:56:53 AM
uh... if staff members aren't allowed to enter, then who's going to enter? There are like 3 people on the board who aren't officially on the staff list -- and a while back we talked about being more organized, nearly everyone was to be on the list. Wizards didn't have a problem with allowing employees to enter the setting contest a while back.
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Spriggan on February 18, 2004, 09:02:47 AM
I take staff members more as the editors and deparment heads, IE Fell, Tage, EUOL, me and SE.  We're the ones that have access to the site and server so we shouldn't be allowed to enter.  Everyone else is are writers, almost freelance from how the site is run atm.  I should have expalined that better, but that's just how I see it in my mind.  And I don;t mean to offend anyone who does only write articels.
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: House of Mustard on February 18, 2004, 11:49:36 AM
Well, I won and I'm officially a staff member, but I'm not really a staff member.  I haven't written an article in something like eleven months.

Now, just to prove myself wrong, I've finally submitted another article.

And you all should have entered because Silent Storm is frickin' awesome.
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 18, 2004, 12:40:12 PM
Sprig brings up a very good point in that we need to start using these contests as traffic builders. These past two I've kind of looked at as rewards for the regulars rather than draws for new people (though we did, oddly enough, draw some abortive interest from Quark)--and yes, I do consider them rewards despite the level of work required, because most of you already write reviews for free, and this is a way of compensating you. For that reason (and because I see no reason to do it) I'm not limiting the contests to non-staff members.

As for criteria, what else do you want to know? I was pretty clear in the first contest that I would be judging the entries myself, but I forgot to mention that this time around. I'll go add it in. Anything else you want to know?

Seriously. You should all go buy it.

The only problem I have with it is now I am being consantly owned by these Panzerklein thingies. Somehow, I can only move them like 5ft/per turn and they can chase me down with them.

I think you should have set a minimun word limit.  And had an explination of our webcomic review criteria (or a link to EUOLs old explination if it's on site).  I still think deparment heads, and editors (ie people that have access to edit articels and upload to the site) should be void from entering for obviously reasons (they could edit entries and such), I have no problems with staff writers since they are mostly people that come to TWG for others reasons and kind enough to do articels for us.  Even if you don't keep deparment heads from entering I never will enter one because I don't think its right if I do.
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 19, 2004, 03:56:44 PM
Feel free to never enter, though I still don't understand your problem with it. They can edit entries? And they're going to go in and screw with everyone else's review to make their own look better? Nobody that has that kind of access would do that, or I wouldn't have given them that kind of access. And since I asked for all entries to be sent to my email, it's not even possible.
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Spriggan on February 19, 2004, 06:35:14 PM
*sigh* You're just not grasping what I'm saying here.  It's not that I think someone that has access to the site, even if they had the ability to do so, would defraud it.  See I know that and so do you and all the other frequrent posters.  But the people that don't come here all that often, or read the forums have no idea who can do what. And would think there was somthing up.
There's also another angle wich is the game company itself.  I don;t know if you're requesting extra copies to give away, but think how it would look to a publisher/deveoper employe that came to the site to follow up on the contest and they find you giveing the game to your brother, or someone else you've know for a long that that works for the site.  I'd be furious, and woudn't send you anything anymore.  It would seam that you were conning the company, they don't know how you run things or what the relationships are on this site.  Do you think if people saw that happening more often then not they'd take your word for it?
Title: Re: Silent Storm...
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 19, 2004, 07:25:59 PM
That's a fairly good point, and yes I do know what you're trying to say. The unfortunate truth is that if someone from a game company actually visited this site they'd probably stop sending us games altogether--we're not all that big. The fact that my brother was the only person to enter the previous contest would be far more infuriating than the fact that my brother won a prize.

Encore has volunteered to send us retail copies for use in contests--it appears to be standard practice for them. I am trying to distribute them as best I can, and cutting out the majority of our readers just because I know them seems like a pretty bad idea.

Anyway, while you've been griping about how I didn't specify word count, I've been advertising the contest on other sites and message boards. Pulling in more people will make the contest bigger and greatly increase the chances that the prize will not go to someone we know. It seems like a better solution to a bigger problem.

You know, call me a purist, but this game really ticked me off when the Panzerkleins showed up.  Aside from the 'big scary dude' problem Fell mentioned in the review, I just hate the fact that they can't make a striaght WWII game and they feel like they have to toss in sci-fi nonsense.  Once the Panzerkleins show up, the feel of the game totally changes -- for the worse.
