Title: Favorite Coin-Op
Post by: Slant on May 22, 2004, 11:02:51 PM
What are some of the most memorable arcade games from your childhood?  Sure, everybody knows the ones like Mortal Kombat or Pac-Man, but there were a whole lot of cool ones that never became household names.  Some of the ones that ate my quarters on a regular basis were:

Joust
Tron
Gauntlet
Berzerk
Wizard of Wor
Qbert

Ever since I've seen DDR in the arcade I've disliked arcades.

 Astroids
Pac-Man (I know I am not supposed to say it but it is just so fun)
 RAMPAGE
There was this one where you sat down and had joysticks and it was 3D Mech fighting.  That RULED!
 Marvel VS Capcom
 The Star Wars Arcade, YAY!!!
 Area 51
 Metal Slug
 Q-BERT
A lot more that I can't remember the names of...

Smash TV!

You've gotta love this game.  It was the ultimate 'blast everything that moves' game--and you did it to win great prizes and pretty girls!  I mean, what could possibly be better than mowing your way through a swarm of fifty club-wielding grunts just so you can pick up a new toaster?

how ELSE do you get toasters?
I remember another great one: Blood Bowl.

Though they were deceitful. They engineered it so you THOUGHT you'd be paying a quarter a ... well, quarter. But while the quarters of the game lasted like 3 minutes, and your $.25 bought you 3 minutes, the time during penalties and setting back up after a score counted against your money, but NOT game time. So it usually took about two bucks to play a game.

There was this vs. fighting game that was really, really old.  And all the characters were medeival type, but this one was different.  Cause with those nifty swords you're carrying, you could cut off your opponents' arms, legs, or even their head! (which earned you an automatic win).

I was a big Double Dragon fan.  Fell and I used to sneak over to the supermarket to play it before school.

Joust was really good, and Rampage was incredible. My brother and I played that one together, although it was a little rough making up a code of conduct to handle incidental PvP hits. Then some idiot would join in and punch one of our monsters directly a time or two, and it was all over. The little humans could wait.

Xenophobia was another good one. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game was pretty good, too.

It doesn't get any better than Altered Beast.

I never got to try Altered Beast too much until it was pretty out of date. The concepts of it did look pretty cool though. It just wasn't in the right locations.

You're only the third to bring it up. I'm assuming the general opinion is that this was a good game. I would tend to agree.

Well, maybe I should have been reading a little more closely.

Rampage?  What's Rampage?

Just kidding.  Playing a giant monkey rocked!
