Hero Creation is GREAT!
I dont know HOW MANY diffrent concepts I went through

The First 10-20 levels are fun.... But then you realise that EVERY mission is basicly the same, and there is very lottle to collect in the way of "phat lewt"

Post by: Dex1138 on February 03, 2005, 12:28:08 PM
The developers want to stay away from phat lewt and I love them for it.
There were quite a few cool things in SW Galaxies that you could only do/get if you were an uber-combat character and I didn't like that at all.
The missions are defintely the same but I find the real dynamic comes from grouping. And yes, I'm still playing!

Mustard got this for Christmas, so we started playing again a week ago. I'm a gravity/kinetics controller and he's a fire/fire tanker.

Idealy there is a game that is somewhere between

City of Heros with it's Quick-action low depth
SWG with it's Virtual second life, complete with Day-Jobs and Chores....

So Far WoW seems to strike a decent balance....

Actualy, had SWG been acceptable repaired, maintained and balanced, it WOULD have been the ideal game for me... So I Like depth and Detail...

I thought about it, but I'm not play UXB so it seemed...wrong. I could do it if enough people want me to, I guess, but it would be on a much more infrequent schedule (maybe twice a week instead of every weekday).

I was half joking, but here's what I'm thinking now.

It'd be cool to have a running feature with some game. Something in addition to our regular rash of contents. It doesn't have to be CoH, it could be any game (video or otherwise), and it could even change games every once in a while. But it'd be nice to have people looking forward to that.

Hmm... I only get to play Wow once a week now. Hmmm, I'll sort out what happens saturday and see if anything comes up.

I could start a WoW blog. We'd have to gloss over the first ten levels, since I don't want to start over, but it could be pretty interesting, I think. And Blizzard occasionally puts community links on their front page, so if the blog got big enough we might get some recognition for it.

yeah, we could do that, I think. I don't think it has to be daily, but once every several days would be good.

I vote for the WoW blog.

1.  I'd be interested.
2. Isn't CoH a little old now?  Would it really generate as many hits as a WoW blog would?

I amazed you can play CoH Fell, outside of the character creation features the same is very subpar in tearms of combat, quests and many other things.  I couldn't get past lvl 14, by then I knew there wasn't anything new for me to see besides a few powers.
Title: Re: City of Heroes

Well the best zones are 20+...
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: Spriggan on February 04, 2005, 09:28:48 AM
I ran through several of the zones sidekicked and wasn't all that impressed when it came to diversity.  Most of the zones are the same in tearms of graphics, there was a lot they could to do make them better.  And, if by lvl 14, I was sick of all the same instance missions why would I want to stick it out to do another 46 levels of the same office or warehouse maps over and over again?

Basicly the combat and the instances/missions turned me off of that game.  It's just not fun for me.
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: Entsuropi on February 04, 2005, 10:19:44 AM
You went through all the zones sidekicked, except the good ones. The good ones being the ones you can't get into if sidekicked.

Post by: Spriggan on February 04, 2005, 10:31:38 AM
Are they so spectacular that it's worth grindeing through the same quests/instances and look alike zone for hours on end to see?  If so why not make the rest of the game that good?
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 04, 2005, 11:33:23 AM
I happen to think that CoH has the best combat of any MMOG, hands down, and superior in many ways to a lot of PC action games. Yes, the levels get repetitive, but it's still a fun game with great grouping options and impressive stability.
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: Spriggan on February 04, 2005, 12:49:46 PM
See there I diassagree with you Fell, you can make the argument that it's got good combat for an MMO but not for "Most PC action games".  Seriously there's nothing to it or complicated about it.  It's just you hit this buttion then the next button, by that time the first button has reactivated so you push it ect ect.  That's not  fun or inovative combat, it's tedious and boreing.
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 04, 2005, 01:24:35 PM
Compared to the combat timer auto-attack of every other MMORPG, it's downright revolutionary. And when I compare it to non MMORPGs, I'm referring to the dynamics of battle rather than the button-pushing system itself--several characters with distinct combat roles facing off against large groups of enemies is very fun. It's more personal and more tactical than any FPS I've played, certainly.

Depends fell. Counter Strike, Natural Selection - these can all have very detailed combat plans, served through voice communication. And certainly FPS's are a lot more frantic and gripping - MMO's are downright drowsy in comparison. But for a MMO, CoH is a lot closer to an action game than any other.

Post by: Fellfrosch on February 04, 2005, 03:21:56 PM
I've played a lot of counterstrike, and while I'll give you frantic I never had a good team play experience unless I was on a LAN with several friends. I'm sure voice communicators would have helped, but for the most part you're playing with incommunicative strangers who have their own agenda.

Thats why there are an inordinate number of clans. They are where the teamwork comes into effect.

This must totally burn you up, Spriggan: http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/archives/2005/02/city_of_heroes_11.html

To be fair, they chose WoW as Game of the Year, which makes their choice of CoH as MMORPG of the year seem more like a runner-up. Still, I'm glad the game is getting recognized for some of it's cool features.
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: Spriggan on February 08, 2005, 02:31:19 PM
Na, it dosen't burn me up, there are lots of good things about CoH.  I personaly couldn't get past their quest system and repedidness of the zones/instances.  It's combat is ok, for an MMORPG, and many other things about it are good.WoW is a better game in many respects, heck I get disconnected less on WoW then CoH, combat is faster and you level realy quick.

If they'd just make more instaces (it's not like they're that big), make the zones more unique (and ontop of that add more building types, I've never seen a fast food hamburger joint in a standard stripmall office) and make it so you don't spend more time running from the quest givers to the quest then you do actualy doing the quest, I might still be playing the game.

Post by: Fellfrosch on February 08, 2005, 03:06:50 PM
Well, I can't disagree with any of those criticisms. CoH innovated in areas where MMORPGs desparately needed innovation, but they left some other aspects just as bad as they found them. WoW is superior simply because someone said "why should we punish people for playing our game? Let's make it easy to level, painless to die, and fun instead of just hard."

Out of curiosity...is this game anything like freedom fighters? Which by the way wasn't the best of games but I laughed so hard at it I cried.

You mean Freedom Force? That was an awesome game, and made me laugh quite a bit. City of Heroes is completely different, but the sequel to Freedom Force comes out this summer.

Yes it does, I loved FF, I enjoyed just randomly destroying everything around me and not actualy playing the story mode.  I made an Ash (from evil dead, got the skin off a site) that was max on everything and it was great, one shot from his Boom Stick would knock people through two or 3 bulidings.

Modding that game (or at least creating characters for it) was so dang easy, and there were tons of skins all over the web. I hope the new version still lets you do all that kind of stuff.

That's one of the big things missing in CoH: an intereactive environment. It'd be cool to pick up a mailbox, lamp post, passing vehicle and use it to put the beat down on some thugs.

No kidding. And despite the minor inconvenience, I'd absolutely love it if you could get run over by cars (and, by extension, knock bad guys in front of them).

It would cool if you could hop on the cars and ride them aroud the city. This would also solve the problem of it taking forever to get anywhere unless you have certain supre-powers.

Yeah, I tried to do that for about half an hour before I realized that they'd specifically coded against it. they should definitely let you do that.

Stratics did a chat with the lead CoH developer; fairly boring, overall, but some interesting hints about City of Villains.

One thing that CoH does so well is keep people informed on what going on, both their community reps and designers are frequently on their message boards.  Also their Community reps actual know what's going on, unlike Blizzard.

CoH has spawned it's own "All Your Base Are Belong to Us" phenomenon (do-do-doo-doo-do).

Someone got a blind team invite and joined. The leader said "Kill Skuls" and just stood around while everyone on the team did his mission for him.
The person posted his story on the forums and it has become unstoppable! Even some of the devs are having fun posting about it.

So, it turns out that I can be entered to win a slot in the CoV beta if I get a friend to play CoH. They gave me a code, and whoever I give it to gets 14 days free; if that person subsequently signs up for at least one month of play, I get entered in the drawing.

So: if you're thinking about playing anyway, let me know and I'll give you two free weeks of game time.

I don't know how close this patch is, but it looks fun. I think I'll still wait for CoV, though.
