Ah yes. Well that explains it. I know of at least twelve other people who didn't read that review either.

Uh...I get 40,000+ hits for Mugwump.  What about you guys?

http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-mug1.htm

(Edit--I suppose if you put quotes around it, you only get about four hits.  One of which is, of course, us.)
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: Fellfrosch on December 20, 2004, 09:10:46 PM
Yeah, I did the quotes search, and the only hits other than us ignore punctuation (one has the first I at the end of the preceding sentence, and the other two have the first I as failed html tags).

And mugwump is bound to turn up a lot, because (among other things) it's the original name of the Mamas and the Papas.

When I first read your article, I thought you were assuming that you'd made up a fake word.  It was only after re-reading did I realize you'd only made up a fake phrase.

I have an idea for a poll. Of course it MAY require a picture, or not. If anyone's ever eaten Animal Crackers then you know that most of those animals are horribly rendered and are usually unrecognizable. So, why not, if you can, get a picture of an animal cracker and ask what animal is this. Or just say "What Animal Cracker shape am I thinking of?" Just an idea.

Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: House of Mustard on January 04, 2005, 03:52:32 PM
So, in the recap of last week's poll, I was wondering:

The poll was asking us what crappy gift we got, not which gift we wanted -- the analysis is therefore flawed, since Fell assumed the Necronomicon was the most wanted gift -- when, in truth, the invisible jet and robot tentacles were the LEAST boring and thoughtless.

Personally, I voted for the talking horse, which, though cool, is the most boring and thoughtless gift there.

Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: Lieutenant Kije on January 05, 2005, 03:20:14 PM
So I'm wondering how many people voted "yes" because they really love the government, and how many just wanted to see how many other people voted for it.  Or how many people couldn't stand not voting on a poll, even if there was only one option.

You know in the last poll results article where I talked about different types of answers? The first three answers in this poll were firmly in the "obligatory answers that I don't think anyone is going to vote for" category. My assumption in this regard is the same as Mustard's.

I knew that the list would be incomplete without some form of vengeance, so I wrote something like "my father's killers go unpunished." But that really wasn't funny to me, so I started looking for some other target and remembered that when Homer is drunk, he always go off on the Blue Man Group. So there you have it.

resident evil 4.  They didn't make it, but when me and Fell where your age Archon Nintendo use to have a very strick policy against violence, gore and other things on their systems.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: Archon on January 26, 2005, 12:10:10 AM
I know what you mean, I still play around with my NES and SNES. But even with things like Resident Evil, I would say that they are still much more conscientious about violence and such than the other two systems. If you look at the games out for Gamecube and you compare them to the games for XBOX or PS2, they are generally still more appropriate.

I'd like to point out that my mom (who has synaesthesia, i.e. words = colors) says that none of the words on our list are very pretty. Luscious is apparently too bright and shiny, and she gave "lemony" as a more balanced and pleasing alternative.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: JP Dogberry on January 30, 2005, 01:13:11 AM
I'd like to point out that I, who have Synasthesia, say this:

Voluptuous - violet.

Astounding - Silver

Thwart - Mustard

Onomatapoia -  A sickly off white

delve - brown

Wriggling - Pinky Brown

Lunch - Bright Yellow

Sesquiential - Blue

Silky - A silvery blue

Logarithm - reddish yellow (I can't describe that colour any other way)

brob whatever - Brown

Luscious - brightish yellow.

I voted fro Thwart, ignoring the colours. I have the privalige of doing that. Lemony is brighter than Luscious, IMO. Lunch is brightest and clearest of all.

Has anyone with synesthesia ever written a book?  Someone really funny?  Like Thurber.  If Thurber had synesthesia I think his writing would be lethal comedy.
Title: Re: More Current Poll

Now, there's an idea. My NaNoWriMo was kinda humourous in some ways, while my next novel is basically a permutation of Cyberpunk like this:

Cyberpunk shows the near future to discuss the present, and is bleak.

Post-Cyberpunk shows the near future to represent the present, and is hopeful.

What I'm writing will show the present to represent the present, and will be nonsensical. The idea is that we're in postmodernism, which is a simple wya of saying the world has gone entirely insane, and insanity is the only sane response to it. So, I'm writing a love story between a failed, angry Sysadmin and a woman he met years ago. She decides to, romatically, on the spur of the moment fly over to see him. Beurocracies get in the way, and the whole story is about how difficult it has become to do something that should be simple, and how the modern world gets in the way of basic human stuff like that.

It's deisgned to be humourus. I need to write more than two pages.

I love that if you pick up the phone while your computer is connected, and imitate the sounds the modem MAKES, it kicks the modem off line.

There's a difference between actually being better, like I am, and running around singing about it to the people you're better than, when what makes you "better" than them is that you're anti-social and defensive.

edit: I also dislike your assessment of Cinderella v. Belle. She's probably the best human being that Disney has portrayed. She doesn't break into random stranger's houses like Snow White, doesn't disobey her parents like Ariel, and she readily forgives her enemies rather than becoming violent. She actively uses what resources she DOES have to help the less fortunate (the mice, the birds, Bruno, etc) even though she has a strong claim on being the most repressed and least fortunate person int he locality.
Belle on the other hand whines about how everything around her is so uncool, but then does absolutely nothing about it but re-read the same book over and over and over again. Yeah, that's what I'm looking for in a girl.

Of course, Belle was a brunette and showed more shoulder than Cinderella...
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: stacer on February 14, 2005, 02:00:36 PM
See, I abstained from voting in the last one out of principle: I'm not attracted to women.

However, I argue for Belle as well. I don't see her as whiney. She chooses her fate. Cinderella is a little more active than, say, Sleeping Beauty, but she's still pretty passive.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 14, 2005, 02:29:26 PM
uhm... How does Belle choose her fate? She actually GIVES UP at one poitn and instead of honoring her promise to stay runs off, and has to be rescued.  She's trapped into what she does. Sorry, I still fail to see anything heroic about that.

And I think part of the disagreement might be that I don't think "choosing your fate" is a good thing if it comes at the cost of righteous living. Cinderella is righteous. She's even, dare I say it, Christlike in terms of her character. Belle is proud and snooty and pretty much a jerk (plus she traspasses). It's sometimes hard to see that because Gaston is so exaggerated in his jerk-ness, as is the Beast at first.  Belle has to be FORCED to spend time with Beast to see anything good about him. She's just as judgemental as anyone else at first. She runs out to look for her father, not to make a better life (while the action is admirable, it's hardly doing anything to improve her life situation), she mistreats the Beast, disrespects the rules of his home, trespasses to a forbidden area even though she had plenty of other places to explore, and tries to run out on her commitment. She had fair enough reasons for some of those behaviors, but that doesn't make her any better than someone who patiently accepts her situation and tries to make the best of it and cheer the people around her. Frankly, Cinderella would do a lot more to make more people happy to be with her than Belle ever would. Belle is selfish, essentially, and yet we look at this selfishness as a virtue.

I don't think that exerting your free agency is automatically a good thing. Our society is starting to train us to that, because for so long the "docile" woman has been portrayed as desirable. I'm not saying that Cinderella's docility is what makes her good, I'm just saying that Belle's supposed activism, which I think isn't accurately portrayed when most people talk about her, isn't at all a virtue.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 14, 2005, 02:50:46 PM
Saying that she had to be forced to spend time with the Beast before seeing anything good in him is kind of unfair, because he was mean and scary and didn't show any good qualities until after she'd been with him for a while. I agree with a lot of your points, I just thought that one seemed like a cheap shot.

As for Cinderella being Christlike and benevolent, sure, but that doesn't make her any less vapid in my eyes. It's very hard for me to root for a heroine when everything she accomplishes is actually done by someone else, which is why Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and the two Disney movies I can stand the least.

You make a good point about misplaced emphasis in our society, however: I can sit here and complain all day about how Cinderella does nothing to help her situation, but then I would be ignoring the fact that she does things to help other people's situations. When the other people in question are annoying, poorly animated rats with speech impediments, however, my sympathy for her is forgotten in my hatred for the movie in general. I think the mirror in Shrek said it best when he called Cinderella a mentally abused shut-in; compared to Belle, who is admittedly headstrong and selfish but also quite kind in more situations than you gave her credit for, I take the latter.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: stacer on February 14, 2005, 03:16:05 PM
Well, I guess I was thinking more of the original tales than of the Disney version, SE, so I see your points. Yet I must stubbornly protest that you're bringing up points that throw a wrench in the works of my paper!   :-[ Thankfully, I'm not comparing Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, though (I've always loved the Cinderella tale more than B&B, but Cinderella's overdone, when it comes to projects).
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 14, 2005, 03:29:00 PM
well, Stacy, I wouldn't have a problem with the original tales, But when the origin of the disagreement comes from a poll about sexiest character in a cartoon, we're obviously talking about disney films. Bell does look better, I'll admit, although this is because Cinderella is from an earlier time and both has and displayes less cleavage.

I don't think Cinderella is vapid. I don't think there's much evidence for that. I think she does act in the sphere available to her. If she were given the sphere of potential influence that Belle had, I think we'd see a Cinderella that both gets to know the Beast faster than Belle does, because she's more forgiving, and also is less of a villager hater.

I can't argue about the mice. Though the bit where Gus-Gus spills all the corn is pretty funny.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 14, 2005, 03:47:10 PM
I don't think that the Beast would have ever grown to love Cinderella--she would have been far too accepting of his anger and tyranny, and thus wouldn't have forced him to change. She would have done the same in his house that she did in her own--avoid eye contact, say yes to every order, and retreat to her room whenever she got the chance. In a month she'd be one of the servants, and he'd forget she was there.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 14, 2005, 04:31:23 PM
Cinderella, and I'm a great expert on this because it is my daughters' favorite movie, doesn't avoid eye contact. She even tries to explain things to her step-mother at one point. two points. Once when Gus-Gus gets her in trouble, and again when the invitation arrives. I don't think Cinderella is more formidable than you make her out to be. She obviously can't win against her step-mother, but she does try. ESM (Evil Step-Mother) has to think and use tricks to outwit Cinderella, and even then she almost doesn't defeat her step-daughter.
Cinderella would have had dinner with Beast on that first night, instead of rudely violating his personal space. Her kindness would have won him over, I think. The reason Beast even tried with Belle is NOT something she did, but because his servants kept urging him on. Whatever faults Beast may have, ignoring his servants isn't one of them. He listens to what they say, even if he doesn't follow counsel. Becoming one of his servants doesn't make him forget you. Plus she'd be around, the only human anywhere, which is pretty darn noticeable, even if you are meek.

I'm in SE's corner on this one.  Being snooty, rude and foolishly headstrong does not a good heroine make, although Disney seems to think so.

Keep in mind that Disney is the company that seems lately unable to make an animated film in which male characters do NOT dress up in women's clothing and prance around suggestively at least once.
Title: Re: More Current Poll

on that note, I asked my co-workers who the strongest female character in Disney Princess Land was. And the answer was Mulan. Which, whatever you think of the quality of the film, is pretty much accurate. She's rude and disobedient and criminal in the society, but still pretty strong in terms of sticking to what she thinks is right.

Also keep in mind that the cross dressing in both Mulan and ENG were pretty darn funny. I don't remember it happening in L&G though.

Which falls right in line with your comments about the decay of our society.

And it follows that in order to break out of a bad tradition, such as the way women were treated in our country's past, women will have to break those rules that oppress them, which, to the those not bothered by the rules, just looks like them breaking rules.

What Disney and many of the "activists" have done is lose sight of the actual goals and just get caught up in the "rule-breaking" as though it were an end unto itself.  Destructive and stupid.

Which leads into the general "liberal" mindset, that any and all restrictions on anyone's behavior are inherently bad and therefore to be rebelled against, with no thought given to how it will affect efforts to run a stable, secure society.

I'll accept that. In Mulan's specific case, it was good rebellion. In most of the other cases it's not necessarily for a good purpose

L&G should have been L&S. I have no idea how that typo got in there.

Mulan is certainly a strong character, but doesn't that get us back to a point Stacer made (somewhere on the boards, I forget where) that women should not have to act like men in order to be considered strong? Doesn't Mulan just prove that she can do the same things men do? I wonder if there is an active, capable Disney character who displays a distinctly feminine form of power.

I hope you guys realize that I have work to do. Interesting conversations like this aren't going to help it get done.
Title: Re: More Current Poll

Cinderella.

:D

She uses typical female chores to do her good. It's not a great example for that question, but it's the closest you'll get, I think.

On that note, That's how Eowyn gets her womyn power thing going too. She says "I'm no man!"  but her whole behavior is to show that by doing what a man can do. Interesting.

I'd probably babble on, but I want to go home, and this interesting conversation has held me to my desk as long as I'm going to let it.
Title: Re: More Current Poll

Fell just catagorized my beef with Mulan.

I think Jasmine is pretty strong (too much cleavage, but that's beside the point). She might not pick up a sword, and she can be whiney, granted, but she doesn't just sit around Buttercuping it when Aladdin is trying to get the lamp.

I think Noni is a really good example too. She doesn't always get it right, but she tries really hard to be a good sister, mother-figure for Lilo.  Interestingly, the leader of Galatic command is female.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: stacer on February 14, 2005, 05:38:12 PM
But a woman doesn't have to be traditionally feminine to be feminine, if that makes sense. She doesn't have to be Cinderella, mopping the floors, I mean. (I think you know this, too, SE. I'm just saying.) I think Mulan's  cross-dressing was the only solution she could think of in that kind of situation. I don't know how to say what I'm trying to say. She was working within the confines of her situation by subverting it, and in this case it was for good reasons, so I can see the justification within the story for her "becoming" a man.

But I would like to see more strong feminine characters, but it's the whole negotiation of what is it to be truly feminine, you know? I think of Elder Faust's talk to women asking us not to lose our "sweet femininity." Does having to be a stressed-out career girl make me less feminine? I think I'm pretty darn feminine. Where is the balance between the new freedom women find themselves with, and hanging on to the truly feminine?

Does that make sense?

And I have homework to do, speaking of stressing out, so I may not be making much sense, and I should be paying attention to the book I'm reading.  ;)

But Mulan had to become a guy to be strong. I agree that it makes sense for Mulan, given her society, to do what she did, but it bothers me when the definition of a strong female is someone who is so man-like that there ceases to be a distinction.

Yeah, but she's pretty much a rotten person.  It's been a long time since I saw the movie but aren't all the problems pretty much started when she abdicates her responsibilities as a princess because she feels "confined" or "forced to do things against her will" or some such?

I don't doubt that either of the two main choices were rife with cheating. Maybe if the losers in charge of the poll had put a new one up on Thursday like they were supposed to, things like this wouldn't happen.

Best...poll...EVAR!!!!!

Genius. Every one a gem. Though the cleverness level does seem to be a big step down on the mighty sword one, so I'm wondering if I'm just missing something on that one.

I cannot decide what to vote for. I'll have to consider it for a few days.

I don't think there's much to get with that one. I think it's just pointing out the disparity of how enthusiastic fantasy fans/re-enactors/cos-players get about their props and material and how the "real" world treats that enthusiasm and prop.

To moulder is to rot or decompose. This is another Kije poll, and his original spelling was molder, which is a from used as a mold. I added the u because I think the word moulder is cool.

Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on April 29, 2005, 12:30:51 AM
No, it sounds better that way - because donnie is two syllables.  Don - ee now our gay apparal sounds better than "Donnie we now"
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: EUOL on April 29, 2005, 12:41:39 AM
That was, actually, the joke.  As the items moved down the list, they grew progressively more removed from the word at the top.  Donnie Darko is first--an exact match.  Then Donny Osmond, a homonym that is still a name.  Then Don Knotts, which is a shortened version of the original.

Then we move on to Donalds Duck and Trump, where we're extrapolating the name at the top into other versions, rather than just shortening it.  Then we have Dawn Wells, which not only uses a homonym of a shortened version, but switches the name to a female one.

We now our Gay apparel was supposed to be the last, and most ridiculous of the options, as it took a version of the name and used it in a non-name context, making it the punchline of the set.  I'm not sure where the last three options came from.
Title: Re: More Current Poll

I didn't notice the progression, and took the "we" out for the same reason Fuzzy mentioned. I also re-ordered a few of them, and added in the last three to make a full 12. Sorry to have missed your original intention--if I'd known that the order had a reason, I would have left it intact.
Title: Re: More Current Poll
Post by: EUOL on April 29, 2005, 04:34:01 PM
Yeah, I noticed a few of them were out of order.  Quijote and Of the Dead don't make sense in the progression as they are.

I don't know how to vote because I don't even understand the question. Is it Internet slang, or something? I'll probably pick the most coherent one, about "playakiller has challenged you to a duel." All the words are at least in English.  :)

paper clip and break dancing

I vote for ice skating. I once had a roommate who fell while ice skating with her boyfriend. He skated over her finger, slicing off its tip. So she now has one stubby finger. Ice skating is dangerous!

ok, well, now I'm certain it's the paperclip and the breakdancing. Plus those are the most amusing ways mentioned on the poll. I can eliminate a couple others. I'm thinking the horse one is Stacer. Just a guess. I don't picture Tage being in a musical, so my next guess is bleeding internally.

Oh yes, I had a pony. I had a pony and 12 Quarter Horses, actually. And it was my dream life, as far as horses go. I even got to be in a horse show at age 7 (with my dad leading me around the arena--by that time Peanut had me really scared and I didn't want to have her dump me in front of all those people). I got 3rd out of three and still have the little trophy they gave me.

You need a write-in response for this poll. I rolled the die that is next to my computer - the first time it came up Krusty, the second time Mr Burns and the third, Bart. I don't know what answer to pick!
Title: Re: More Current Poll

Obviously Bart. Bart is a part of the family that is the namesake of the show, so he definitely takes precedent. Plus, he has a really cool slingshot.
Title: Re: More Current Poll

Well, let's use Kabbalah:

KRUSTY

K = 11
R = 18
U = 21
S = 19
T = 20
Y = 25

Total = 114

1 + 1 + 4

= 6

So there's your answer.

They are all based on real diseases/symptoms. Some are obvious. I can post what I based them on, if you want.

Fell, you changed Tendinkenisis (to Telekinekeness). It was that way on purpose. Tendinitis (a tendon injury, like tennis elbow) + Telekinesis. Just so you know it was that way for a reason (and so no one thinks I came up with something as strage as Telekinekeness ;)).
