Okay. Garren's did a skit on that about 4 years ago. Makes me wonder. . . .

You'll note that they even acknowledge on the bottom of the comic that they got the words from a song (web site apparently of some sort at http://www.varsityvocals.com/boca ). I'm not too worried about the Garrens being stolen from.

Well Saint and MOD are on the internet and while some people may say that interesting is subjective I find them very interesting, it goes to say I find my own scribblings to be fantastically interesting....
just like I find this article from CBC arts news... or is that hideous... I cant remember.

CBC News Online

NEW YORK - According to the New York Post newspaper, William Shatner is set to release a new album.

Guest musicians on the new disc, which was produced by Ben Folds of the Ben Folds Five, include former Black Flag lead singer Henry Rollins and country star Brad Paisley.

The new album isn't the first foray into recording for the Montreal-born actor best known for playing James T. Kirk, the captain of the starship Enterprise on the original Star Trek series.

In 1968, Shatner released his first album The Transformed Man, which includes spoken-word cover versions of the Beatles' Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds and Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man.

Although Shatner intended The Transformed Man to be taken seriously, it's become something of a camp classic.

The Hip Surgery Music Guide, an internet guide that celebrates offbeat musical genres, says the songs can be taken as examples of "either impassioned intensity or pompous overacting."

Shatner has made a living in recent years by spoofing his own overdramatic acting style.

In 1998, he played himself in the comedy Free Enterprise. He also recorded a song called No Tears For Caesar for the film's soundtrack. It combines elements of hip hop and a Shakespearean sonnet.

For more arts news, listen to The Arts Report weekdays at 7:12 a.m., 8:12 a.m. and 5:55 p.m. on CBC Radio Two.

I'm just not sure i believe it. These people should have been able to SEE the club house. i'm positive not everyone had "real" weapons so they would have seen the fake plastic bits, etc. Sounds like a good gag, but when presented as a psychological study like he does, well... it falls apart.

Ah, well I just assumed that 1. this was before most people had heard about things like D&D, and 2. the people in question were very very stupid.

I've met people that stupid, so I can believe it.

I don't think the first of those assumptions is valid. Didn't he say something about the 80s? it was well enough known in the early 80s. Maybe the people were pretty stupid, but this still amounts to a basic incapacity to function in society.

Now, if they were so blasted drunk they could barely stand.... but this foregoes the possibility to rationalize with each other that they were not crazy like he said they did (one wonders how he knew so much about these peoples' experience? did he spend his whole time watching them?)

it's all presentation. He presented it like a sociological study rather than a joke. which would presume we have to believe the story, but he has too many details in the wrong places and not enough details about important things. So it didn't seem like a joke.

Cistercian monks making printer cartridges instead of manuscripts!

Cheaper inkjet, laser printer cartridges abound
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) — By Duncan Martell, Reuters columnist
Tucked away in the hills of Wisconsin is a group of monks who have decided that jumping on the imaging and printing bandwagon would be a financially rewarding way to support their monastery, the Cistercian Abbey.

Good-bye illuminated manuscripts, hello inkjets.

The business, which operates the Web site LaserMonks.com, offers up to 75% discounts for businesses and individuals on printing and imaging supplies, including toner cartridges, inkjet cartridges, refill kits, copier toner, even cash register ribbons.

The market for printing and imaging supplies is a big one. Hewlett-Packard, the biggest maker of printers, derived $918 million, or 76%, of its operating profit in its most recent quarter from its imaging and printing business.

"It's a ridiculously high number," said Roger Kay, an analyst at market researcher IDC.

And, increasingly, consumers have options beyond going to Office Depot, OfficeMax, Fry's Electronics stores and other retailers to get inkjet and laser printer cartridges when they are running low on ink, or have already run out.

LaserMonks.com is just one of them. A Google search for "inkjet cartridges" yields 380,000 hits as well as a large number of sponsored links, for which businesses pay Google to post them next to the query results.

The price difference for buying inkjet and laser toner cartridges from manufacturers, such as HP, Canon, Epson, Lexmark International Inc. and others and from a discount Web site is not inconsiderable.

"A Canon or Epson inkjet that they're selling for $20 or $25, we've got it for like $3 or $4," Bernard McCoy, one of the monks who is leading the project, said, adding that the quality of remanufactured cartridges has improved markedly over the last two years.

"We're just a small, simple monastery in many ways, but I'd love to take on the big boys," McCoy said, referring to national retail chains OfficeMax and Office Depot. "David and Goliath is perhaps an apropos way of saying what we're trying to do."

McCoy said his hope for the business is to be able to support the Abbey's operating expenses and charitable giving, which together run about $120,000 annually. If things really take off, any additional profits will be given to charity.

"Would I try it? I think I would," IDC's Kay said of the monks' business, adding that in general he doesn't make a lot of online purchases because he believes the infrastructure of e-commerce is still somewhat unsettled.

"Even though it's true that you trust merchants with your credit card and your banks with your funds information, it's a little different when you're talking about third-party Web-type of buying," Kay said.

Of course, the big boys of imaging and printing let you purchase replacement cartridges on their Web sites, often at prices more expensive than can be had through discount retailers, either online or at retail, Kay said.

"We're talking a lot of black dust here," McCoy said, adding that businesses spend large chunks of their budgets on such equipment. "The enormous amounts of money that go into this, people don't really think about."

Despite slack personal computer sales, which also hurts demand for printers, Lexmark and HP have made solid profits on ink cartridges, the high-margin black and color replacement cartridges that users need to keep their printers humming.

In Lexmark's first quarter, for instance, total revenue was $1.11 billion, up 6% from the year-ago quarter, while sales of laser and inkjet replacement cartridges rose 17% to $642 million, or 58% of total sales.

"HP and Epson and those people will practically give you an inkjet," McCoy said. "Where they get you is on the long-term supplies that you'll need."

And if consumers can't be bothered to head to an office supply store or don't want to deal with an online discount retailer, Kay points to a service that Dell Computer Corp. provides along with its recently unveiled line-up of printers.

"When your cartridge hits a certain level, it sends a message to the PC, which then sends you a message," saying that it's time to reorder cartridges.

"Dell has the part sent directly from their supplier, it goes direct to the user and he ends up holding the inventory," Kay said. "It's a clever idea."

Even cooler if you hear John Stewarts remark to it. Something along the lines of:

"It only took the church some 100 years to apologize to Gallileo. So only 20 years to get with the times, yeah, they're starting to catch up."

Something like that, it was particularly funny.

Okay, Trekkies amuse me.  I can't believe that they took Star Wars--a shoot-em-up space opera--and suggested that it would be *more* violent and action-packed by the addition of Star Trek characters.

It boggles the mind.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet III
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 14, 2004, 08:40:47 AM
what's more, they make Star Wars LESS realistic by doing so. Because while Picard would save all the slaves on Tatooine, he would do so without a full scale slaughter that Jedi would be forced to.

And here's what I don't get. The prime directive. I mean, I'm all for breaking rules when it becomes necessary, but there is NEVER EVER a consequence or even a defence for having do so. How am i supposed to believe it's dramatic or a tough decision. I mean, it's all "I wonder if I should break this inconvenient rules that has absolutely no consequences involved."
Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet III
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on February 14, 2004, 12:55:24 PM
Well first of all - that's why I like the star trek novels.  Most of them are really good, or at least they used to be (I haven't read anything published after about 1999) and they deal with things like that.

Second of all- that's why I love Stargate.  If the US military really had access to that kind of stuff, that's what they'd be like.  None of this "Prime Directive" crap, but "let's see what kind of weapons these aliens can give us, and if they don't want to we'll steal them."

Take this lesson to heart, single men... only pull a stupid stunt like this if a) you KNOW. and I mean, KNOW (possibly because you've already talked about it) what the answer will be, and b) you know your victim (er.. girlfriend) can handle the public pressure.

Ya that onimusha sword is realy cool, there's an article about it at gamespot.  You actualy swind it and the character in the game will attack.  So I guess you could say it's like a light gun.

Indeed, you could say it's a light sword. Or even a Lightsabre.

I would say it's like a lot of non-standard japanese controllers, but that's because we have the Samba de Amigo maracas, (and man, I hope the sword works more consistantly than they do) and a Drummania set, and a guitar that goes to something.

in your review be sure to mention that he also runs herdthinners.com (which shows the SAME comic), which has fewer graphics and a simpler design. It also has a "fortune" random quote, most of which are fairly clever.

A hideously funny toy

http://www.lachschon.de/screens/200401/Rattlesnake-1074547842.jpg

Yeah it was discontinued in 1992, but basically this toy allows 9 year olds to relive the Deerhunter in the privacy of their own backyards...

ok, so I just read teh entire Queen of Wands archive. Pretty good, but what I want is for you to enjoy with me how cool the guy's T-shirt in this comic would be to wear. http://queenofwands.net/d/20030908.html
The strip itself is a bit crude, but just look at the first panel and you'll see the shirt.

The Free Dictionary (http://www.thefreedictionary.com)

I don't know what makes it more free than any other dictionary (like dictionary.com or m-w.com -- though it's certainly more free than the OED online), but it does what a lot of sites don't : true hypertext. It gives a definition, and then a series of "related words," synonyms, and antonyms. For example, I looked up plate armor, and it gave me a list of all the different pieces of medieval plate armor, as well as the names of some times of armor for modern armored cavalry and artillary pieces. Every word on the page is clickable.

The only thing is needs is an etymology. That would rule.

Yeah, it's the last level, and it's tough.  I guess you just have to pile up a HUGE mess of hamsters on the left, then blow them and hope it moves the boulder.

I gave up on the boulder level, but i found that huge piles only moved it a bit - you need to get some hamsters right next to it. Careful stacking is the key I Imagine.

So, I have something you people have to read. First off, there is this (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0100/0100_01.asp) chick tract, which is, by itself, unintentionally funny. However, it pales in magnificence to what happens when a Cthulhu fan (http://esr.ibiblio.org/index.php?m=200312#135) gets his hands on it.

Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet III
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on June 09, 2004, 12:04:54 PM
I still say its bs... I think its just someone concocting a plausible story to sell the item. Its not polished enough, and it has a false ring to it. Mind you its a good sounding piece of malarkey and it will make people think their getting a deal thanks to someone's stupidity. What I think is that someone bought a half price PS2 at Electronics boutique and is trying to make a profit.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet III
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 09, 2004, 01:50:09 PM
heh, "unpolished" is hardly a good argument when trying to debunk ebay listings. Have you read many entries? We're not talking about wordsmiths here.  You don't have to make up a story to sell anything on ebay, there are plenty of PS2 systems available there and on half.com
Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet III
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on June 09, 2004, 07:15:52 PM
Still a story might get more attention than a simple listing.
More attention might mean higher bidding.  Im not saying its a smart thing to do, but it actually could subconsciously compel people to bid a couple of bucks more.

Basically a story about the "Mad" piper of DDay a Scottish commando who played the bagpipes marching exposed up and down the beach as the germans poured morter and machine gun fire on his unit.

Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet III

Lord Lovat, who went into battle with a walking stick, ordered Pte Millin to play as the landing craft doors opened. As shells exploded overhead and machinegun fire raked the beach, Pte Millin, 21, wearing the kilt his father had worn in the First World War, obeyed even though it meant disregarding a direct order from high command, which feared that pipers would attract sniper fire.

Mr Millin, 78, from Sandyhills, Glasgow, and now living in Dawlish, Devon, who appeared as himself in The Longest Day, a film about the Normandy landings, said: "I was the only one with a kilt, a set of bagpipes and a knife, and I wasn't armed.

My most traumatic experience was jumping into the cold waters with a kilt on. As I hit the water I began playing Highland Laddie. Lord Lovat turned round and gave me a smile." His pipes were silenced four days later by German shrapnel.

Wow, you mean that I could be selling human skulls over e-bay for $200+ a shot!  And here I've been working a real job all these years.  Time to go get my shovel.

$200 nuthin. It's still got mroe than 11 hours left and it's at nearly $800. Daaaaaaaaaang. I wonder if people will take monkey skulls. I have some treasonous scum to take care of....

also, I like the hooks. I wasn't aware that the human skull was so easy to open up for cranial access. I'm gonna try and open my brother-in-law's skull tonight....

30 years of D&D. Since its a fileplanet download, and not everyone has a account there, here is a link to my hosting (http://home.comcast.net/~entropytwg/30thbarfight.jpg) of it.

And while I am at it... something someone I know made. The game is Stalker. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ak_gara/Stalker_2.jpg

The Fileplanet page says it is a new picture with elements from old pictures put in. Lots of refrences for you geeks to find. They gave 3 to start with :

1) The fireplace is a Demon Altar from the 1st PHB.
2) The map the thieves are looking at is from the first ever D&D module.
3) The thief stealing the fireplaces eye is Gary Gyjax.

Statuary for the Garden. Fans of the absurd might enjoy the medicine Weasel.

heh, some of those are pretty darn cool. It's about time garden sculpture came out of the age of pink flamingoes or gay, chubby-faced boys holding lanterns. Oh, and Yard Gnomes

"I saw a yard gnome once. Didn't scare me!"

actually, what am I saying? Have I *ever* been interested in garden sculpture? no. sheesh. But some of those are pretty cool.

Koopa, the painting turtle's original artworks.  I might buy one some day, but I'd rather have a photo of the turtle painting.

I fail to see the interest.

wish they'd stop pretending the animal did it. I mean, a human chose the colors and the original placement of the wet paints. A human choose where to start the turtle. A human chooses how long the turtle paints. Maybe he wants to come back and walk across it again.

What if the turtle just walks off the canvas?  Do they put him back on?

Also, I like the line: "a well-respected turtle rescue group".  It just strikes me as funny.
