Title: An Apology
Post by: Fellfrosch on July 23, 2003, 05:51:02 PM
I haven't posted a lot of articles or participated much in the forum recently, and there are two reasons for that. The first is that I've been incredibly swamped with work--not fun time-wasting work, but actual real work that results in me getting paid; you can imagine where my priorities are forced to lie.

The second reason is that our website is doing something really screwy every time we try to post an article. If it's an article I wrote then I can just try again, but if it's an article submitted by someone else (such as Jeffe's excellent Changeling review) I lose it completely. So Jeffe, is you could resubmit that I'd be most grateful.

We honestly don't know why the site is acting this way. We think it might be a problem with bad quotes, but that doesn't explain why we never used to have quote problems and now we have them in every single article. It's a puzzle. But keep heart--we'll get it fixed, and we'll toss out as many reviews as we can meanwhile.

Um I'll have to rewrite it.

Keeping up is not a problem with posting articles, just with posting on the forum. The problem with articles is the stupid bug that keeps killing them. Thanks for the offer, though; I may one day take you up on it.

Maybe you should post a disclamer on the main page mentioning the article problem.  There are a some people that visit the site that don't read the forum.  And we still haven't recovered from last year when we were getting 800-1000 hits a day for a few months.  Then no one was writting articles so we lost a lot of people.  Hate to see that happen again.

Maybe an alternate way of submitting would be good too. I spent a lot of time on my Changeling article and its gonna be a bear to rewrite.

My entire conception fo the universe is confused.

But yeah, I save everything in Word, the least reason for which is not that I want to save a portfolio of my work, no matter what the silly reason.

I still don't know what there is to fix. It's not like the code has changed or anything. I have no idea what's causing it.

is it possible that somehow one of the recent articles that was submitted was somehow corrupt or got corrupted casueing the database to freak out.

Spriggan: No.

Everyone: Thanks to the magic of addslashes(), and a little error checking (which I wasn't doing before), we shouldn't have any problems with submitted articles anymore, whether they be typed directly into the site or pasted in from a word processor. That was a long sentence. Anyway, there you have it. Sorry for the troubles we had with it.

UPDATE: I just discovered that the whole fiasco with quotes was entirely my fault, due to some PHP config changes I didn't know about and overlooked. So it was a problem with the site after all.

Submit article page down.  Fell wanted me to add a link to the submission guidelines on that page.  now it's not working.

EDIT: Ok it's fixed, for some reason all of the echo'd " weren't slashed out and it's wasn't letting me save them in the code.  So I editied it externaly and uploaded it and it worked.  I did save the orignal, Tage if you need it it's right there under the new one.
