Ok, here is a fun one.
What percentage of all real numbers contain the number three?

Well, since it involves dividing one infinite (number of real numbers contain 3 as a digit) by another (number of real numbers), and the infinites are of the same order, the answer is technically undefined.
But, in a less rigorously mathematical way of looking at things, you could say that almost all real numbers contain 3 as at least one of their digits.
As an approximation to show this, we can look at percentages of real numbers that do not have 3 at a particular spot.
In the 1's column, 90% of real numbers do not have a 3.
Of that 90%, 90% do not have a 3 in the 10s column.
Of that 90% of 90%, 90% do not have a 3 in the 100s column.
So for each additional column that you examine (whether in front of the decimal point or after) the pool of real numbers without a 3 in them is reduced to 90% of what it was.
It takes only 8 digits to get below 50%. At 23 digits, you're under 10%. At 45 digits, you're under 1%. And as the number of digits goes out to infinity, the percentage of numbers that do not have a 3 in them becomes ever smaller.

You are right. If we don't deal with technicalities, the answer is "All of them". 100% of real number contain the number three...
But you won't find a mathemetician who is willing to back that up. But technically you can prove that all numbers contain a three, and you can also prove that all numbers contain an 8.

so then 1 being a real number contains a 3 in.....or are you saything that since there is an infinite amount of numbers then the fact that 1 does not contain a 3 is to small to relize, but then you have to think about all the other numbers that do not contain 3.....which yes is infinite, so there is no possible way that 100% of the numbers contain a 3. In fact the highest I think you could go would be 10% if that.

I'm afraid I don't quite get this. It is not possible to prove something is true for all (100%) members of a group if it is possible to find even one counter-example. Even if the percentage of real numbers that do not contain a 3 is infinitely small, the set of real numbers that do not contain a 3 is not null, and therefore it cannot be said that all real numbers contain a 3.
Unless I'm missing something, of course, and there's some sort of wordplay involved that's just going over my head.

It's a mathematical game. You are right, the higher you get, the more numbers that contain 3 you find. Since infinity has no end, you can argue that the percentage of numbers that has three in them must also be rising, and eventually you will reach %100.
But not really. Percentage deals with a finite number, and infinity, as the name implies, is not finite. So it's like an unmovable object meeting an unstoppable force. You can't have both of them in the same universe. They are incompatible.
I guess I shouldn't have use the word 'prove' so loosely. You cetainly can't prove it, but you could argue it.

Yes the percents increase from10% to 19% to 27.1% when you go from 10 numbers to 100 number to 1,000 numbers and it increases again when you go to 10,000 (I am not doing the math to figure that out sorry guys). But every time it increase the amount it increases get smaller, by the time it reaches the amount it is increasing is going down exponentially. It starts off with big jumps but will soon get to so small of a jump that it is uncalcuable. There for you can never really make it to 100%.

This is very similar math thought that is behind the fact that you can prove 1 is equal to 1 or that 1/3 + 2/3 does not equal 1. It has a lot to do with rounding errors and generalizing

A percentage is an expression of a comparison, a way to show a decimal or a fraction. You can have a decimal following a percentage, so you could have 99.9999 (repeating). You can have 100% if you round, but that's it.
The percentage of 3 in them increases as you increase the number of digits true, but the rate at which it increases DEcreases. Of one-digit number (0-9) 10% have three. Of 2 digit numbers, 19 percent do. Of three digit numbers, it's (i think) 27.1%. so jumping from to 1 to 2 digit numbers, the rate increases by 9%, but only increases by 8.1% when you go from 2 to 3 digit numbers. Thus you can get Ifinitely close to 100%, but you will never actually reach it.
Draw it graphically, it makes a curve, always bending away from 100% as it gets closer.

It's a curious mathematical phenomenon. One that you can 'prove' mathematically, but of course is silly. But still, fun to think about.

Do the math.
1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1
Therefore .33333(etc) + .33333(etc) + .33333(etc) = 1 or .9999999999

and you also can't ever make any progress, because every time you move half the distance to something, you still have half the distance left.
this is called a "paradox." It's also an inaccurate way of looking at things. The simply fact that you can produce a number that does not contain a 3 in it shows that it is untrue that 100% of numbers do not have a 3 in them. The math, used then, is a problem. Because it can "prove" something that is patently false.
Again, it's small enough that there's no reason to calculate it differently, but there is an infinitessimally small difference.

look at it this way (also from the Dr. Math site you posted a link to, showing that there is disagreement on the answer -- people proving your point tend to say "if you are going to assign a value to it the only sensible value is 1" and so forth, not very exacting language). 1/3 != 0.3 repeating. .3 repeating is just the closest you can get to it using the decimal system. 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1, but .3 repating + .3 repeating + .3 repeating = .9 repeating. Not one. It's the closest decimals can approach the fraction system, which is why we have ratios in the first place. because 22/7 is not the same as the decimal expression commonly substituted for pi. Infinitely close, but not quite there. 1/3 is actually 1 divided by three. multiplying it by 3 makes 3 divided by three. which is one.
It's infinitely close, no point in picking the nit if you're doing a calculation because the difference will be indiscernable. However, when it comes to proving that every real number contains the digit "3" in it, it becomes a vitally important nit to pick.

e, I'm glad to see someone who looks at it the same way I do. I've been arguing for years that .9 repeating is not quite equal to 1 -- it's just the largest number less than one.
Anyway, I guess it's my turn to post a riddle.
OK, back to the Island of Truthtellers, Lietellers, and Outcasts.
The rules this time:
Truthtellers always tell the truth.
Lietellers always lie by telling the exact opposite of the truth, when possible.
Outcasts alternate between telling the truth like Truthtellers and and lying like Lietellers. Natives of the island know instinctively whether an outcast will next tell a lie or tell the truth, but an outsider like you lacks the necessary instinct.
You come upon a fork in the road. A sign indicates that one path leads to the Fountain of Youth and that the other leads to the Pit of Despair. Unfortunately, the sign doesn't have any arrows designating which is which. But it does say that there will always be exactly one Truthteller and one Lieteller standing at the fork. You may ask a total of two questions of any natives you find standing there -- either two questions to the same person, or one question to one person and one question to another.
Unfortunately, there aren't just two natives standing at the fork: there are ten. One is a Truthteller and one is a Lieteller, and the rest are outcasts. Unfortunately, there is no way for you to determine which group any of them belong to, other than by asking questions.
So, explain what two questions you would ask, of whom, in order to determine the way to the Fountain of Youth.

Also, you must use the verbal answers to the questions to make your determination. So you can't ask something like, "Did you hear they're giving away free hot dogs and ice cream at the Fountain of Youth?" and then watch to see which way the natives go.

As far as the .999 goes, I felt the same way. But after many debates on several boards, and hearing discussion from freaks who knew math much better than me, I started to lean toward the idea that .999~ = 1. What finally sold me was Cecil Adams.

I would pick one person at random and ask him to identify each of the 10 people. If he was the liar, he would tell me that 8 of the people were village members, that he was the truth teller, and that the truth teller was the liar.
If he was the truth teller, he would tell me that 8 of the people were outcasts, and that he was the truth teller, and that the liar was the liar.
If I picked one of the outcasts, and they were lying, he would tell me that he was a village member, point out 7 other village members, and then identify the truth teller as a liar, and the liar as the truth teller.
If I picked one of the outcasts, and they were telling the truth, he would identify himself as an outcast, point out the other 7 outcasts, and identify the truth teller and the liar as their respective selves.
Any way I know exactly who the truth teller is, and would ask him or her for directions.
Unless, of course, you could each act of 'identifying' as alternating between lying and being honest. But as long as they do it in once sentence, I say it's all one event. I'd just ask him to talk in a single sentence. :)

Did you have another solution? I'd like to hear it.
There are two iron rods- one is blue, the other one red. Other than their colors, the only difference between them is that one is a magnet. Everything else, their weight, size, and feel are identical.
There are a few other things on the table:
* A glass of water
* A 5 1/4" floppy disk
* A spool of thread
Assuming that you only have the above items to work with, what is the easiest method to determine which rod is the magnet?

I would say about the size of a roll of quarters, maybe slightly longer.

I'd tie a piece of thread around the middle of each of the bars, and hold each bar up by the thread to see if it swung to point north-south like a magnetic compass. The one that did so would be the magnet.

Floppy disks are made out of some magnetic material. So you could also tie the thread on the rod, place it on the surface of the water and place the disk next to the glass on one side. Which ever rod reacts to the disk being placed by the water is the magentic one.

I'm not sure the first one would work. And I'm pretty sure the second one wouldn't work. Discs can be ruined by magnets, but I don't know if they are in fact magnetic...
There is a simpler way (and the puzzle does ask for the simplest way)... :)

How about this: Stroke the blue rod lengthwise multiple times in the same direction using one end of red rode. Then do the same to the red rod with the blue rod. Presto: now they're both magnets!

Aha! Then why didn't you list them among our assets in the first place?
The red color in the herrings obviously comes from hemoglobin, and hemoglobin contains iron, and iron is attracted to magnets. So you just put each rod close to a herring, and whichever one attracts the fish must be a magnet.

Or you could just leave the herrings out of this and try the following:
The poles of a magnet have much more attractive force toward ferrous materials than the middle.
Place the blue rod on the table. This is the "target" rod. Put the red rod (the "puller") a few inches away, perpendicular to the blue rod and aligned with the middle of the blue rod. Keep moving the red rod closer until the two rods touch. Then do the same, reversing the colors of the rods. In one of the two cases, the "target" rod will start rolling toward the "puller" much sooner.
Whichever rod is the magnet will pull the other rod toward it much more strongly when it is the one with the pole facing the middle of the other rod. Therefore, the "puller" when that happens is the magnet.

I guess I should know my magnet properties better than I do. That might work, and it's quite easy.
The solution I had was to place the rods on a T. Since all of the magnet's power is at the poles, or ends, there would be almost no attraction on the rod that is not a magnet, and serious attraction on the rod that is a magnet.
But your solution is just as easy, using only the two rods, so I say you're up.

How about this...
"If I were to ask the an outcast to tell me what the truth teller would say if I asked which way the liar would tell me to go when I asked an outcast to tell me which way the truth teller would tell me when I'm asking the liar about the outcast, what direction would he point me in?"
Clearly I would glean everything I need from that question, and then I'd simply reverse it.
Ok, clarifying question...
If I ask one outcast a question, and he lies, does that mean that the next outcast will tell the truth, or only that outcast that just lied? In other words, is the entire outcast tribe on the same rhythm?

It's not the solution I was looking for, but I think that's because I'm not setting the limitations correctly. I guess I'll have to try to locate the exact wording of the original puzzle the i read.

Ok, new puzzle.
You are on death row, but it is customary for the governor, on the night of execution, to let you play a game of chance to try to get out of your sentence.
The governor and the prison guard brings two buckets to you. One bucket is filled with 50 white golf balls, the other bucket is filled with 50 orange golf balls. The golf balls are identical in every way except for the color.
The idea is that the guard will blindfold the governor, then the governor will pick one of the balls out of one of the buckets. If it's white, you are saved. If it's orange, you're toast. In other words, you have a roughly 50/50 chance.
The caveat is that you are allowed to mix up the balls, if you wish. However, when you are done mixing them up, there must still be 50 white balls, and 50 orange balls. You can't eat or paint some of the orange balls.
Is there a way to increase your chance of living through the night?

Take 49 of the white balls and put them in the barrel with the orange balls. That way, if he picks one barrel, you have a 100% chance, and if he picks the other, you have about a 49% chance. In all, I believe that gives you about a 75% chance.

Take 49 white balls and put them in the bucket with the 50 orange balls. (If the bucket will not hold 99 balls, then put as many white balls as possible in with the orange balls.)
Your chances are almost 75% (assuming the buckets can hold 99 balls).
The Governor then has a 50% chance of picking the bucket with only one white ball.
The other 50% is split between white balls (49/99) and orange balls (50/99). That works out to about 24.7% for white and 25.3 for orange.
Thus the total probability the governor will pick a white is about 74.7%.
Of course, if the fewer balls the bucket will hold, the less you can increase your chances.
Also, this doesn't take into account whether the governor has a tendency to take a ball off the top or to reach down and take a ball from deep inside the bucket. Knowing of such a tendency would allow you to increase the odds even further in your favor.

I don't think it's a very good solution... If the governor puts his hand into the bucket with only one ball, he will probably feel that there's only one ball, and thus NOT pick that ball, but instead take a ball out of the other bucket--so you in fact only have a 49/99 chance of being successful--unless you fake the governor out by putting an orange ball in a bucket by itself; then you have a 50/99 chance of survival.
Well, that scenario isn't necessarily true, but the point is that you definitely don't have close to a 75% chance of survival. It may be slightly higher than 50%, since the governor may have played this game before and thus might be assuming you'll try to fake him out, but it's not near 75%.

You're assuming that the governor wants you to die. Though you are correct in saying that the human factor destroys any sense of exact probability here--we can't know or control the behavior of the governor. Who's to say he won't just dump them all out on the floor and pick one that's rolling around?

statistly it is close to 75%, but one thing that you can not add into satistics is the pure randomness of a persons thoughts.

The only thing you have to do to control for that is say there's a rule that he has to choose a bucket then stick with it. It could be part of the game. *shrug*

True, you can never account for human will. But in this case the governor really doesn't care. He will pick one pucket, and then pick a ball at random from that (deep in, on top, only one, etc.). So taking the human variation out of that, this is statistically the best move to make.

Sorry for the confusion. That joke was just a 'silly one'. There was no real riddle there. Kind of like a riddle like this.

Anyway, back to the 'real riddle'...
Ok, here are the instructions for the 3X3X3...
I'm going to give you a series of words, in no particular order. Three of those words are related by a word you have to come up with. For example.

Those three words can all be tied together with the word ball.

ballroom
fire ball.
The word that ties them together can be placed in front of, or behind to make sense.
I'm going to give you 27 words. when you find the right words for all of them, you will be left with 9 words. Those 9 words can be cut down to three, and then finally you will have one word.
I am going to be a bit more strict this time. You must guess all of the words with the right word. Last time if you got two of them, I went ahead and declared it right. I'm not going to do that this time. So if somebody guesses Football, Ball room, and rubber ball, I will declare that 'incorrect', even though ball, and two of the words are right.
That last sentence in the above paragraph was important. Read it again if your mind was wandering.

Assuming that is right...
During WWII, the allied forces called upon a mathematician to improve the safety record of their bombers. Specifically, they wanted to reduce the chances of them being shot down. Bombers are slow moving targets escorted by smaller fighters planes to protect them from air attacks. But ocassionally antiaircraft fire would knock them down. A reasonable solution was to put metal armor on the bottoms.
However, putting metal armor all over the bottom would add too much weight, and the plane could not get off the ground.
The mathematician examines the bottoms of all the bombers which had been in combat. She found that most had at least some damage to their undersides, clustered about seemingly at random over the bottoms. After examining the locations she dertermined that in fact the clusters were too many to cover all of them, but she could cover either the front clusters, or the rear clusters. She made a decision and a recommendation.

Well, I would suggest armoring the parts of the bottom that did not have clusters of bullet holes.
My reasoning is that the planes that blew up or crashed in enemy territory would not be available for examination. The planes being examined would be those that were able to survive damage at the points where they were hit.
Therefore, the places on the undersides of surviving planes that did not show damage are more likely to be the places where anti-aircraft fire could destroy the plane.

OK, I like this thread, and don't want it to die, so I'm posting another riddle.
Two trains leave two separate stations and start toward one another on two parallel tracks. The two stations are one hundred miles apart and the trains head straight toward each other at ten miles per hour. A bird, perched on the front of one train flies toward the second at twenty miles an hour (the bird left the moment the trains did). The moment the bird reaches the second train it turns around and heads back. It repeats this process until the trains meet. How far does the bird fly total?
Assume the trains don't have to 'build up speed', but start out at 10 mph immediately.

Does this mean that the bird's velocity is relative to the ground? Or relative to the train it's flying toward? because if it's relative to the train it's flying toward, it can just perch on the train, since the trains are moving toward each other at a net rate of 20 miles per hour.

I assume we're ignoring the slight increase in distance due to the separation between the tracks, which forces the bird to fly slightly at a diagonal to the path of the trains.
The trains will meet (or rather, begin to pass each other) in 5 hours.
At 20mph, the bird will fly 100 miles in 5 hours.

well, we didn't get an answer to the last riddle, but ok on the next riddle. firemeboy has to tell us the answer because we aren't getting it.

EJS got it. And it's quite plausible, when you think about it. She was taking a picture of her husband, and focusing on that. When you are taking a picture of somebody you are looking at them. Are they smiling, are they in focus.
When she got the pictures back, she noticed a hand sticking out of some leaves in the background. She called the sheriff to report the body, and the rest is history.
As I mentioned, I shamelessly stole the riddle from the Car Talk guys. It was this weeks puzzle.

This is a popular brain teaser format, here, cyan. the idea is that the 27 can be put in to 9 sets of three where they are connected by using one word, like the sets Eric has presented. Then those 9 are 3 sets of three for the same thing. Those final 3 words work together to get the final answer.
