Well it's summer here in california and I get out of the car about six blocks from home when I realize that the ground has got to be a good hundred and some degrees and my feet are burning, I then realize my freind has already driven away so I'm walking six block on black burning road with no shade by the time I got home mmy feet were red and looked like they might blister, so now my feet are burnt and it hurts to walk...anyone ever have a experience similar to mine?
-
I haven't had that experience. So I will just laugh at yours. Bwahahahaha.
-
I used to do that on purpose to toughen up my feet every summer. Gave me an advantage at the pool when the ice cream man came....
-
I've walked on Old King Cole. But he wasn't very hot.
On a completely unrelated subject, I have a friend who really walks on hot coals. But I know that coals and coles are different. I just thought I'd bring it up.
-
Y'know, at over a hundred degrees, it wouldn't take that long to burn you're feet, considering water (which you are made of) is already boiling.
-
except that we're talking Farenheit, as is typical for Americans. Instead of that silly, logical metric system.
-
You mean the one that makes sense? Celsius is based on water, a very smart thing to base it around, since humans are made of it and use it daily.
Then there's kelven, which also makes sense, since zero is zero - no heat.
Fraenheit is stupid and does not make any sense at all.
-
Yes, please change the title to coals. C-O-A-L-S.
Homophones are going to cause me to go to jail, I swear, when the ask at the trial what lead me to murder, I'll scream, "HOMOPHONES!"
And then the American public will think I hate gays because no one reads anymore. Apparently.
-
I took the liberty. Hope you don't mind.
-
actualy they don't much JP. I'll let ol' Cecil explaine for you (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_036.html).
-
Ah, but read TFOs post again. If I read it correctly, he said he was walking on a road. A road is quite a good conductor, much better than coals. I think. Unless I'm wrong, which I probably am.
-
of course, the temperature he mentioned was an exaggeration and an approximation, AND you were using the wrong scale. I doubt TFO meant you to take the 100 degrees literally, and definitely not as Centigrade. So really, your whole boiling comment means very little.
-
all I know is I went climbing around the hills around my house(my brothers dog ran away) so know my feet are cut up and burnt...You may know throw your heads back and laugh.
-
Sorry if I didn't' make it clear, but I knew he was using a different scale. I just took the oppurtunity to make a jab at Americans. It's kinda what I do.
In repsonse to TFO: /me throws head back and laughs.
-
Again, I'm not american, I just play one on T.V. er I mean live here
-
JP, it wasn't a terribly effective jab, since it pretty much just made it look like you didn't know what you were talking about.
and TFO, you've lived here how many years? I'll wager your more American in attitude/culture than you are anything else, even if you're not a citizen.
-
I've lived here for four years, I still have trouble with the lingo and I still hav an Irish accent, that and well I fail to grasp the political system etc. etc. just gonna stop arguing now cuz it doesnt really matter.
-
Note I never said I DID know what I was talking about.
I'm going to shut up now. Go away, it's midnight and I'm tired.
-
well I found this by accident,... but its frighteningly appropriate... Straght from the website http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_036.html
Dear Cecil:
My friend Heather and her hubby just laid out some fairly big bucks to spend a weekend learning how to maximize their total personhood and all that. Highlight of the weekend was a scamper across hot coals. The idea was to impress you with the power of your mind--if you kept thoughts of cool moss in mind as you walked, your feet wouldn't burn. The coals were in a strip about a yard wide and ten feet long. Walkers, in bare feet, made it through with few problems. Heather made it too, with no trouble and no sign of damage to her feet.
Heather's (and my) question is this: she believes that, via mind over matter or hypnosis, a person might lower his blood pressure or speed up his pulse or even will himself not to feel pain. But whether she felt it or not, shouldn't the coals have burned her feet? After all, if you throw a steak on the grill, it cooks regardless of the thoughts it happens to be entertaining.
What's the deal? Does psychology triumph over physics? Is it a con- -aren't the coals hot? Do sweaty feet protect you with a layer of sizzle? --Ed Dolnick, Chevy Chase, Maryland

Actually I did read the post and follow the link which is why it was on my browser when I minimized it. I just forgot about an hour ago what it was, and that Spriggan had said it.
