I've always wondered - do publishers prefer it when you are above a certain age? Is it harder for younger people to get publishers to take them seriously?

I don't think age is as important as writing ability. And, strangely enough, as you get older and spend more time writing, your writing is better. Which is why most authors are 'older.'

John Scalzi has written a couple posts (http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/004175.html) about teen writing (http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/005207.html) on his blog, which, though on the snarky side, make some good points. Make sure to keep reading, and not get defensive about him saying "your writing sucks" because he includes some very good information. The main thing is: whether you are good enough to get published now as a teen, you'll keep getting better with more practice.
