Okay, so I want to go see a movie tonight. But there are so few out there that are anywhere near interesting. Any hidden jewels that you've discovered? I've seen Master and Commander, have no interest in humor like Will Ferrell's, and can't think of anything else out there.... Anything else? DVD suggestions work, too.

Well, I hear the Haunted Mansion is decent. I don't expect it to be a masterpiece but supposedly it's pretty good.
Also surprisingly "Love, Actually" is getting good reviews. I kind of want to see that one.
-
I know it's probably too late, but I just heard some good reviews of Radio, even though I still have no idea what it's about. Can anyone fill me in?
-
It's based on a true story of a retarded man who becomes an assistant to a high school football team. Haven't seen it myself, and don't plan to. Not that it couldn't be good, but I just can't seem to enjoy movies about mentally retarded or mentally ill people. Still haven't seen A Beautiful Mind, and don't ever plan on it. It's for personal reasons I won't get into, but suffice it to say such movies pain me.
And I ended up staying home and watching White Christmas on video. I love Danny Kaye.

Well, if we come by in september then I'll have to make you watch A Beautiful Mind. I quitefully enjoyed that movie.
-
You heard *good* reviews about Radio? Most everything I've heard about it was less than lauditory. Far less...
-
I've read some reviews that didnt' TRASH it, but they still didnt' say it wasn't all that great.
-
I'm more surprised that you heard good things about Haunted Mansion--even the favorable reviews weren't that favorable.
-
Haunted Mansion, Cat in the Hat, Timeline, and Gothika are all struggling on Rottentomatoes (around 15%.) I have RARELY seen a movie under 20% that I liked.
Radio, however, is in the 30's (I think,) which means it could be all right, but I'm not likely to enjoy it. You have to be at abotu 40% before you find movies that I like and others don't.

Love actually is great, but theres a little nudity.
-
I would love to see Love, Actually, but unfortunately, it is rated R. (grrr!!) It's got a 69% rating on RT, so it's probably good. I saw the previews for another movie that looked like Love, Actually, but wasn't, didn't have the same caliber of actors cast in it, but wasn't rated R. Can't remember was the move was titled though. . . .
Danny Kayne is wonderful. I highly suggest The Muppet's Christams Carol as Michael Caine (sp?) does a very good job as Scrooge.
Freaky Friday just came to the $1 theatres and it got an 88% on RT, so I think I'll have to go see that on. For nostalgia's sake.
Very disappointed about The Cat in the Hat. Here's hoping that PIXAR is the only studio ever allowed to put Suess on the big screen again. . . .

Looks like Elf got an 83% rating, so maybe that's the Christmas movie to see this year.
-
I've heard nothing but good about Elf, even from people who don't like Will Ferrell.
-
Like me, for example. I hate Will Farrell, but still couldn't find any good reason to hate Elf. It's nothing special, but it gets you in the holiday mood like you'd expect.
-
Yes, I liked Elf. Plus that chick was cute.
-
Yeah, I intend to see Elf now because my roommate (Belle), who LOVES Will Farrell, unenthusiastically said it was "okay." And because my friend who doesn't like Will Farrell really liked it. Seeing as how Belle's and my senses of humor when it comes to SNL comedy don't intersect, that's pretty much a good recommendation. :D
