Title: Dragon Movies
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 23, 2004, 07:08:15 PM
I was looking at my arthurnet suggested viewing schedule, and since SciFi's showing of 13th Warrior at 11 tomorrow is preceded by two (sure to be lame) dragon themed movies, I figured I'd tape them anyway, just to see the dragon.

But that got me thinking:

Have there been any un-reservedly good dragon movies?

The most famous ones that come to mind:
Reign of Fire. Ok, that one SUCKED.
Dragon Heart. Pretty mediocre.
Dragonslayer. Pretty ok, but nothing I'd recommend without hesitation.

The problem with many is bad effects. but even when they have the effects available (like Reign of Fire) they don't have any plot or acting and they don't show NEARLY enough dragon footage to compensate (in Reign of Fire, nearly half the dragon shots seem to be still lifes)

The little Norwegian Blue in Harry Potter was pretty neat, but the movie itself was hardly a dragon movie.

I'm mostly ignoring animation right now, but feel free to add those in too, if you choose (for the record, Smaug in the animated Hobbit was ok, but what was up with the flashlight eyes?).

My two favorite dragon movies:

Pete's Dragon
The Reluctant Dragon

You never saw The Reluctant Dragon?  or are you making fun of me?

It's an early Disney cartoon, about a very effeminate lazy dragon (likes poetry and tea) who has to be conned into having a battle with a very old knight.

Now I may remember that one. good choices, but what about an image of a sleek and powerful and possibly mean dragon. Any of those?

are you saying those are good or bad? because I thought there were problems with the dragon animation with The Hobbit, and I felt the film as a whole was only mediocre.

hmm for the time I thought it was pretty good, (early 80's) still if you don't like it...
Flight of Dragons had tons of cool dragons...
but in general no one has done a good dragon movie... ever.

Well, theres this Dragon movie on SciFi, called Dragon Storm. It isn't all that great, but it does have John Ryes Davis in it. So I figured I'd take a look see. But its just as good as Dragonheart or Dragon Slayer. Nothing superb.

yeah, if you read my first post, you'll see that's what prompted the discussion. I don't expect it's even as good as Dragonslayer (which was much better than Dragon Heart)

Yes, I did, but you did not say what the name of the movie was, or how it was. So I was just elaborating for you.
