My wife just put it on. And I caught myself smiling at "Farm boy, fetch that jug?" "As you wish" Nice. cheesy, but totally accomplishes what it means.
Then JP tells me he's never heard of it.

Anyway, he needs more encouragement. He doesn't believe me. So I need you folks to explain to him that he wants to see this film.
i mean, it's subtle in a lot of ways. The important thematic material, like Fezzig and Inigo's friendship or the faith and trust issues, but hilariously and ironically blunt about "true love" and exposition. man. What is there NOT to like about this film?

You want us to explain to JP why he needs to see one of the greatest movies ever made?? I quote...
"Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... "

If you're a guy, Robin Wright is hot. If you're a girl, Cary Elwes is hot.

Probably one of the greatest sword fights ever seen on the big screen. Plus Dread Pirate Roberts, ROUS (rodents of unusual size), Inigo's search for the six-fingered man ("Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father; prepare to die."), Miracle Max ("He's dead, but I've seen worse."), and Andre the Giant.
I mean, come ON! Andre the freaking GIANT!
How could anybody NOT have seen this movie?

They use the "you killed my father..." line in Hellboy. It's great.
The Princess Bride is truly a cultural icon.

I talked to a fencer at World Fantasy one year, about the authenticity of sword fighting in movies. She said that the fencing in Princess Bride was horribly innacurate to the true sport of fencing, but added that the movie inspired every single member of her fencing team to take up the sport in the first place. It's simply a thrilling, touching, iconic movie that no fantasy fan should miss.

Ya, but fenceing as a sport is completly different then how sword fights where actualy done back then.

That, and fencing the sport is BORING!!!
It's one of the few frame stories I've seen in film. Something dramatic is happening and this kid's voice comes on "Wait, wait . . . is this a kissing book?"

Fencing is a boring sport? On what planet? I fenced for my college team for two years and I found it to be a huge rush each and every time. There's just something about strapping on the vest, fastening the helmet, and whacking the crud out of your opponent with your saber.

boring to watch, cause its all inline or too fast.

Yeah, sorry about that Slant. I'm sure it's very invigorating to stand looking at your opponent and hoping around, then sticking him with your foil, but it's not nearly as entertaining to watch as The Man in Black and Indigo Montoya jump over outcroppings of rock, and swing around randomly placed ropes.

If fencers wore outrageous constumes and trash talked before each bout it would be a lot more interesting. Plus throw in a few fake, but flashy, moves. Like wrestling, but with swords.

And then, while your sparring partner's back is turned, you hit him with a folding chair. That'd be sweet.

Olympic events I'd like to see
Javalin v. Fencing
Its a battle to the death.
Almost as fun as the 1600 metre skeet relay.

Javelin v. Shotput would be cool too. Just standing eighty yards apart and throwing stuff till someone dies. Nothing like good old-fashioned blood sport.
