So after looking a bit more in HQ I decided to pick it up for use in homebrew worlds. Despite Glorantha's fame, I just can't get into the setting.
I do like the system though...but char gen is not expllained all that well, particularly magic. When you choose common magic can you just pick five from anywhere in the book? I'm confused. Example me, maybe.

yeah any five, five from your homeland, from someone elses homeland, or you can make it up (much more fun)
Which other aspect of character creation puzzles you, I remember a lot of important stuff was easy to miss. I'll find some page references for you later (my books at home)
Oh and magic is complicated at first anyway... I'd reccomend that you take one type and work on it exclusively untill you get it. (and dont start with Wizardry :) )

Thanks, that helps.
I'll be redoing magic to fit my homebrew anyway, but it's always good to understand the system before trying to tinker with it.
I REALLY like what you can do with this game. The way relationships matter and how any skill can oppose any other is very liberating.

You can see why I think it would be ideal for LOTR.

Yes, I think it would fit very well

I think I would also like to use it for a horror game, imagine using relationships as a spooky mechanic.

I'll probably go straight fantasy with it, though something more epically themed than usual.
