Maybe we could update the links page with a list of cool sites... or even add a cool website of the week feature.
-
Man, I hate that links page. We need to do something to it, though.
-
Well you do a cool job with the RPG links... they could definately be mirrored there.
-
and the cool stuff site would be easy... we have 3 threads filled with cool sites....
-
All links panels must contain this link:
http://maddox.xmission.com/
It should be a rule.
-
I'm kinda gonna have to disagree with you on that.
-
I second SE's view. But it is an Xmission account, wich is a Utah hosting company (it was my old isp provider before I moved to my new place).
-
ok haveing given this some thought lets start from: "what should and shouldn't be on the links page". Not sites themselfs, but what type of site ect. Like as Jeffe mentioned the RPG site. Do we wannt to mirror something that will be placed on that page? Do we want to go and list other company sites on other deparment pages (I'll volentier to do so if we decide)? Should we list other review sites? Or just company/personal sites? Only link to those that link to us? Have staff member favorite links?
My view is we should add links to the deparment pages like how 42 originaly did for the RPG page. It'll add more substance to those pages, and in turn make them look better. I know most of the regulars never go there, but as I pointed out in this thread (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=1075898865) lots of people do look at those pages. If we do decide to link to other review sites lets try and keep them to smaller ones, so no linking to gamespot or RPG.net, but linking to comixpedia would be cool. I don't care if someone links to us or not, it shouldn't be a requirement. And I don't care about staff favorite links, whatever anyone else decides upon is cool.
-
yeah, y'know, I never look at "link pages." so I don't care a whit about "my favorite web sites." But if it's soemthing like a resource "Here are pages relating to this page that will be helpful" (like company pages) that's different.
-
*bump*
Could use some more input
-
Hmm well I like the idea of the links being mirrored on our links page and in the dept folders. If someone is checking out our links page for something, or just exploring then they are more likely come back if they keep hitting cool sites even if they arn't related to the site they were looking for. At the same time I like the idea of the links being in the folders so they can read about a product and then go to that companies home page.
We also need to put links to Amazon or something in articles so people can go there and buy the product from our website...
They call it Amazon.com associates
heres some info from their website.

-
we've talked about associate for a long time. Essentially, the current policy is if you have an associate membership, you can plug the link into your article. Then if anyone buys, you get the kickback for doing the advertising.
-
Well, it's easy and free too. So there you go. Another incentive.
But, what I just thought of is why not have staff picks? Like SE has these links that he thinks people would enjoy, and Fell his own, and so on, etc.
-
I think Fell has reservations about linking to Amazon, not sure what though. Becasue this is like the 4th time that this has come up and he hasn't done it.
-
To quote word sense at one time or another: "Lazyness?" Is that it?
-
I think that was a big part of his issue.
-
I also think it might have to do with, if the site is makeing money, what to do with that money.
-
Yes what to do with revenue is such a hard thing to figure out?
How about using cash for site updates, software and hardware maybe even an annual newsletter, or as a fund to buy stuff for reviews that we cant get for free.
-
not many of those are required, since the site is hosted on Tage's verio account, which he gets free since he's an employee of verio.
FUnding stuff for people to review, or even just to mail stuff that came to the wrong person for free, that's doable.
I don't have a problem with the current situation, though, where we get our own links/kickback. it's an informal, non-professional site, so I don't see why that's a problem for anyone.
-
Well thanks to Tage we are on a very good hosting server for free. So there's no way we could update any of the serverside stuff with the small amount we'd get from amazon. As for software, why buy it? We can code most the stuff ourselfs, and if not get some GPL program to do it for us. The newsletter is the same way, why would we need to pay for that? The code is simple enough.
So that leaves useing it to buy things for reviews. This could lead to problems since it's basicaly like giveing the money to someone. Who should get the items they want bought? Whats and ideal price range? etc. I think its a headache that, rightly so, Fell wants to advoid.

heck save the $$ and have a big end of the year BBQ
-
in Virginia....
-
with the end of the year being some time around July 4
-
we can watch movies. We'll have a parade! We'll all drink fizzy lemonade and eat neopolitan ice cream! YOU WILL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN!
-
And we'll do a pig pickin.........
-
A what?
-
a pig pickin!
-
Which is an activity where you... um... pick pigs? From... the pig pickin' patch?
-
yes. It's like picking teams. Or strawberries. Your call.
-
or pickin' succulent pork off the bone of a huge side of pork thats been cooked on a wood grill for about half a day.
Its basically the pulled pork of a real Carolina BBQ
-
Then it would be pork pickin' wouldn't it?
It certainly sounds more enjoyable that way; the other way I was thinking of the convo with Gemm and Gorgon about sheep growing on trees.
-
I've been to one of those before. Man, I must say, pork, from the big, isn't all that great.
-
then you havent really been to one of them then.... and its a pig pickin, not a pork picken'

you dont let anything go to waste
-
I saw the head. I think I know what it was. =P
-
moveing back on target. Here's a small link banner for us
(http://www.monkeyslothstudio.com/twg_banner_small.gif)
It changes about every 30 seconds.
first pannel is: "The offical timewasters guide"
second pannel: "Like you've got anything better to do"
-
It'd be even better had you spelt it right.
-
I think the banner should switch a little faster. I, personally, don't want to stare at a picture for 30 seconds before it switches to tell me what the site name is.
-
five seconds seems good.
-
I originaly had it at 10 seconds and it switched fast enough that it drove me crazy. 20 seconds is where I like it (I hate flashing/blinking/quick changeing link Icons). If others want a faster moveing one, then by all means make one.
-
/me edits... eventually.
-
http://www.neilgaiman.com/exclusive/banners.asp
We should have some of these on the site.
-
I'm going to have a reworked links page comming out sometime after I get the deparment page's finished.
