Title: Conference weekend
Post by: stacer on September 21, 2005, 09:48:31 PM
I figured that perhaps not everyone reads Site News and that I should put something here instead, since I only saw two people reply to my other post. This is what I said there:

Quote

Okay, so I'll be in Salt Lake for Conference weekend--Friday morning (a week from this Friday) through Monday morning. I've got Friday lunch booked already, as is Saturday night. I'll be up in Salt Lake for pretty much all the sessions of Conference. So, that leaves Friday night or Sunday night--or, if you all insist, Saturday between sessions, but that becomes more complicated--to hang out with you lot.

I'm thinking that since we enjoyed learning Magic from EUOL when he was up here, and I've since heard that Fell has prepared a Very Special Deck, a game of Magic would be in order. I can bring some cards as well, either for a draft or just for something fun to do.

So, who wants Friday and who wants Sunday? Where shall it be and what shall we do?

Fell has voted for Friday, playing Magic. Chimera has voted for Sunday. I'm available for either, though I have another old friend who may claim the open night, and I think Friday would probably be a better night for most.

I also would like to play Magic, but if we have a large enough group, we can have other games going on at the same time, too.

And we definitely need a host. And I suggest a potluck dinner rather than eating out. I can bring my grandma's famous chocolate chip cake, as it travels well and always tastes better on the second day anyway.

Thoughts?

Are we set in Salt Lake, or can you come to Provo/Orem?

I'd prefer Friday in Provo I also know EUOL is planning on Friday too.

If it's Sunday I doubt I'd be able to show up, and while I'm not speaking for EUOL I wouldn't be surprised if that day is busy for him being in the Elders Corm Presidency.

I can come to Provo. I'll be driving down, so I'll have my truck. I also talked to Brenna, who is planning on Friday. So we'll say Friday, and just need a place and a time. Fell or EUOL/Tage, either of you willing to host?

Friday is better for me at the moment. My gaming group was thinking about getting together then, but they haven't  made a decision, so TWG get priority.

Sunday might be hard for me as my family often gets together after all the conference sessions.

I have talked to Tage and Stacer, and we have decided the following: 6:30pm  on Friday, September 30, at Tage's house. Please bring:

A potluck food item of some kind, dinner or dessert, I don't care.

A magic deck if you have one. We will also have other games, including the divine Robo Rally.

No children. This pretty much just applies to me.

No Children!

I guess I can't bring Spriggan along then.

Actually, I may have a complication that makes it so I can't go to my Mission Reunion. I have to go to the Choral Performance for my job, and I picked up tickets for Friday night without realizing that was when my reunion was. So I'm thinking now that I won't be able to make it to my Mission Reunion. On the plus side, this means that I could pop my head into the TWG party on Friday night after the performance, which will probably be over around 9:30.

How late do you think you will go? Where are you having this shindig? I'd like to play Magic again, and to see Stacer.

See Fell's post above. Home of Tage and EUOL, 6:30, potluck. Not sure how late it will go, but as these things often do, probably a while.

So, we have: Fell, Mrs. Fell, Tage, EUOL, 42, Sprig, me, MsFish, and Chimera possibly later. What about Skar, Kije, and Prometheus? Haven't seen Kije or Prom around here in a while, actually. Did he move away and I just forgot?

Brenna has since said she can't make it after all, so we will miss her, but I'll see her later in the weekend. My old roommate Fiona, who many of you know, may be coming along with me (I hope). Seeing as how I'm staying with her, I really hope she calls me this week--she moved to her new apartment in Salt Lake last weekend and forgot to give me the new number. Whoops!

Am I missing anyone? Assuming the presence of anyone that hasn't actually confirmed? :) Aw, just show up one way or the other, I suppose.

Prometheus isn't a given since we have yet to talk to him (unless Fell got a hold of him via WoW), 42 is going to e-mail him some time this week if he hasn't already.  Dono about Kije, he may not have seen this thread yet (while he checks the forum often enough he doesn't read all the threads) though he knows we're planning something this weekend just not when.

There's the possibility of people from 42's gaming group showing up as well, I invited them so they could show up.  42 himself may or may not depending on if he's up(he does work the Friday night-shift).

Also I doubt I'll play magic since I don't care much for the game unless not enough people show up for the draft, but from the looks of it we will.  And if nothing else is going on I'll probably stop in to say hi then leave since watching people play magic isn't all that exciting.

Not sure how long it would go, usually the drafts we do run about 2 hours and if you add dinner into that I'm sure plenty of people will be there around 9:30ish though the draft will be over and some people will have left.

Sprig, some people will be playing RoboRally or other games, too. So, hopefully there'll be something there to interest you.

I talked to Prometheus this weekend, and he's planning on coming. Also, we're looking at doing normal constructed magic for this thing, and a draft some other time--that will make it easier for those who don't know the game as well (such as stacer, ms fish, my wife, etc.).

Because you promised to leave early if we played Magic :)

Well then my horde of Teen Titan repeats will go bug someone else then.  I've got like 12 beastboys maybe I'll start a circus.

I'd go to a Beastboy circus. But I'd prefer a Starfire nightclub.

I'm planning on being there as an observer. Or the Observer, but without the funky white makeup and cowl, and not sounding like Tom Servo.

Well this is supposed to be a family website.

Anyway since we're no longer doing a draft Friday I will be bringing my clix since a few others that that will be showing up have expressed little interest in constructed magic.

Okay, we're moving the time up to 5:30, because I've heard that a few people will have to leave early and we want to have as much time as we can. Remember to bring food.
Title: Re: Conference weekend
Post by: stacer on September 28, 2005, 03:22:29 PM
Problems have come up where pretty much most of my original plans for this weekend have fallen through. My rider bailed on me, making it a pretty expensive drive (that I could have paid the same amount to fly), and my old roommate that I was staying with and going to hang out with most of the weekend moved this week and there was some communication problem where she assumed we'd just get together occasionally and I'd be staying somewhere else, rather than hanging out with her most of the time and going to Conference with her.

I'm beginning to think I need to postpone this trip. I really wanted to go to Conference, but it's becoming too complicated. That's 24 hours of driving without a rider, and a lot of gas money. Much as I want to hang out with you guys on Friday night, most of my other plans are shot, and I'm not sure that it's a good idea right now.

I don't want to plan Friday night with you all and then have to bail at the last minute, but I'm thinking it's just not the right timing. I can hopefully come down later if I find a cheap airplane ticket or something, or a rider, but driving 12 hours each way by myself with gas being where it is, and not even having the main plans I made on the other end come through, is probably a sign to postpone to a better time.

Can anyone make an argument for why I should come after all? I'm really trying to justify it in my head, but the more I think about it, the more I think I should just stay home this weekend.

As someone non-involved, I think not going would be the more prudent decision, Stacer.

I'm sorry to hear it, and I wish I could come up with something to convince you, but the truth is, if it was me, I wouldn't come either. Without a rider the cost of your trip just doubled, as did the amount of driving. Come down later when it's easier and we'll throw you a big party.

You're still not allowed to get sick this weekend, though.  ;D

Oh, and anyone want my conference tickets for Sunday morning? I think if I mailed them out by this afternoon they'd get to you by Saturday. Four tickets, section BA2, which I'm assuming is the balcony, section 2, way up on the left.

Ya save your money, maybe come down for LUTE or Spring Conference.  You could probably get $100 tickets on southwest for one of those times.

Also this begs the question, are we still doing anything Friday?  I know about half the people that were going to come were doing so just becasue of Stacer.

Unless someone says otherwise, I'm still planning on coming and bringing something for potluck. I have a babysitter for the kids lined up. So if we're bailing, tell me now so I can warn the sitter.

Ms. Fish got married and didn't tell me?

Or she had a sex change??!

Either way, I'm highly offended that I was not informed.

Okay, I've been talking with a few people, and Oct. 21 seems to be a good time to reschedule. Southwest is having a good sale right now, so I think I'll go for it, unless there's some major obstacle. I'm going to buy my ticket by Friday, so this is just fair warning. I'm really going to come out this time.  :)

That seems fine to me. I checked the BYU calender, and there aren't any performances I need to go to. So I'll put it on my calendar and plan for it, if you decide to come. I hope you do.  ;D

That weekend works for me.

I used the babysitter on Friday to go see Serenity with MsFish.  ;D

Oh, good. I haven't seen it yet. I'm thinking perhaps I should see the show first. I did see The Exorcism of Emily Rose Thursday night, which was... okay. Typical Catholic possession story, combined with a Law and Order episode. Not worth the $9.50 I paid to see it, that's for sure. But the same night I got Howl's Moving Castle (the book), finally--I decided it was taking too long for my request at the library to come through. I'm only in the first chapter, but it was well worth buying.

Howl's Moving Castle is definately on my list of books to buy. I really enjoyed it.

Of course, the Miyazaki movie is on my wish list as well.

We need to nail down a date. My friend is throwing a party on either the 21 or 22 of October, and if I let her know which night I have open soon she'll plan for that. If you are flying in on the 21, stacer, does that mean you want to have the TWG get-together that night? Or on Saturday the 22? If we could get a consensus, I would appreciate it. I want to be able to do both.
Title: Re: Conference weekend

I don't know. What say ye all? Either Friday or Saturday work best for anyone?
Title: Re: Conference weekend
Post by: stacer on October 03, 2005, 11:09:15 PM
So it's a very good thing I checked Southwest again today to be sure I had the dates right, because I realized that the sale ended today. So, whether I've heard back from some people yet--like Fiona, who I've decided I'll try to visit but won't plan my weekend around--I now will officially be there for the weekend of the 21st-24th. Because my brother has offered to give me a ride to/from the airport, I am flying in earlier and out later than I'd planned, so that he doesn't have to miss work. So I'll get there by 10:30ish Friday morning and leave about 5ish Monday evening. I think I'll bring some family history and spend Monday morning in the Family History Library or something.

Anyway, that's the official news. I have a plane ticket, I will be there. Officially. :)

Stacer, if you happen to need a ride, I work in Sandy and just bought a new car.  ;D

Oo! I might take you up on that. I will probably do the Enterprise weekend special for a car rental, but that means I'd need to rent a car off-airport, so if you wouldn't mind giving me a ride from airport to Enterprise, I'd really appreciate it. Do you work during the day that day?
Title: Re: Conference weekend

I do work on Friday and Monday. What time do you come in on Friday? I could see if I can work something out. They really don't care when I work, as long as I put in my 40 hours per week.
Otherwise, I can drop you off at the airport on Monday morning.
Either way, we can work something out.
Title: Re: Conference weekend
Post by: stacer on October 04, 2005, 02:31:44 AM
See above--in about 10:30ish Friday, out about 5ish Monday. If you can arrange it and want to, I'd appreciate it; otherwise I can work out something else, no big deal.
Title: Re: Conference weekend

If you absolutely need it, ie can't work anything else out, I could pick you up on Friday since I don't work nor have school but I can't drive you Monday.  I tend to be everyone's backup airport driver around here.
