"Magic is what makes fantasy fantastic," someone says, "you can't apply rules to them or else it loses wonder!" I respond, "Sure, but if you want to write them you will certainly want to know how they work." Writing is all about execution, and I find applying some basic laws of physics to magic systems make them more understandable and realistic. Here, I'm going to outline my basic method for developing a magic system.

I have a problem respecting any writer who can't END a story. And I don't just mean because he died. I mean because he took 13 books to get to the (supposed) ending. I don't care how good it is, I'm never going to read that, because I can't respect it. There is no literary virtue that can trancend the inability to bring rising tension to a close.

We decided that we want matching wedding bands. Then Drew fell in love with these:

I find that fabulously geeky, so we've decided to get them. I've never wanted a diamond (I find them overrated, overpriced and not to my taste), so we decided to go inexpensive and geeky on the engagement ring, since I won't wear it much after we're married.
Then Drew found the teeth, and it made us both so happy that we decided it just had to be. We're both pretty unconventional, so it works.

I just submitted a review for Confessions of a Part-Time Sorceress, which Stacer sent me to review. It's there when you need it.
Also, I submitted reviews of a Lilith Saintcrow book and the new Kitty book--both of which I thought I'd reviewed, but realized I hadn't. Those two aren't terribly long (500 wordsish), but they're there.

Most people have told me that the thematic responsibility problems get worse in the second book, which is why I haven't run out to read it. I HATE the book's subtext, and no one has indicated to me that it gets any better.
