Triumph!
« on: November 18, 2004, 10:04:14 AM »
Well, sort of. I may be stressing out over this paper, but I think I just found a part-time job. They sound terribly interested, and who wouldn't be, in this situation--it's Houghton Mifflin again, but this time it's in the Reading department, and this time it's a real part-time job--I think. I saw a posting on my school's job site about a part-time job with Reading, and called just to clarify whether it's a part-time job or a short-term contract, and told them I used to work in Social Studies. He called me right back this morning, and once I told him who I worked for and what I did, he was all over getting my resume. Yay! So, hopefully it'll work out for next semester, and it'll give me a financial leeway between graduating and finding a trade job.

Good, I hope that works out for you.
Course, just how long do you want to work for Houghton Mifflin?

I also am hoping for a new, better-paying job next semester. Though I guess everyone is.

Great!

So, you'll be a reader for fiction books?  Helping them choose which ones to buy?

Not quite. This is a part time position in the School Textbook Reading division. You know those Reading books you used in K-6? Those books. And no, it wouldn't be fiction. Or at least, it'd be the slaughtered fiction that goes into reading books.

So yes, 42, the question will always remain how long I want to work for Houghton, especially in that division. However, at this point, I just want something part time that will take me through to May. Then I'll probably move to New York and find a full-time job in a trade house--preferably one that will let me do children's fantasy! Unless I can get into one of the two children's trade houses here in Boston.

My student loan will cover most of next semester, but I need a job that I can save up for the very end of the semester and moving expenses and initial living expenses, that sort of thing. At this point, I suppose working at Crate & Barrel or some such place would work just as well. Perhaps I should find something that lets me do my homework (or write!  ;)) . But I think Houghton would pay better.

Okay, now that I don't have that paper hanging over my head so heavily today, I can think a little clearer. I think 42 has a point--would it be a forward step? Probably not. I think I need to be going ever closer to a trade position, not building myself as a textbook editor even more. He was so excited to hear about my background yesterday, that it was nice to be wanted.

Argh. I called Candlewick, just to check in, and they rarely have part-time positions. I'm just not going to think about it till I get back from Christmas, I think, unless something comes up in the mean time. It's still two months away.

We had "Junior Great Books" when I was in like 5th and 6th grade.  Does your company do anything like that?  Best story I remember reading from there was Bradbury's "The Veldt"

Those are probably the equivalent of leveled readers, which are stories written specifically for a certain reading level, A-Z (A being non-reader, Z being proficient).
