The old Marvel Superheroes RPG
« on: February 18, 2005, 01:39:39 PM »
Anyone play this? I'm talking about the one published by TSR years ago. I personally love the system for its versatility and fun.

welcome to the boards, Maximus! Be sure to read the FAQ and to introduce yourself

I played it once, long, long ago. I seem to remember the GM not having the best grasp of the game or having any sort of attention span for it, so we didn't get very far.

Thank you.

I'm a big fan of the game, as it avoids all of the things that have irked me from other RPGs. I would challenge anyone to come up with anything that cannot be done with the system. It doesn't have to pertain to superheroes. I maintain that I could, with minimal effort, run a game in any genre with the system of the the old Marvel RPG.

maybe I'll have to dig up an old copy somewhere then. What is the basic concept of the system?

It's a d100 system. The main thing I like about it though is that there's no heirarchy in the advancement system. You advance individual stats. You pay for advancement and influence die rolls from the same pool of "karma." It also encourages imagination in how you use powers by rewarding extra karma points for unorthodox thinking.

This was one of my first roleplaying games and remains one of my favorites.  We would never play a campaign, we would just randomly roll up new characters each time we played.  We'd each struggle to find a backstory to explain the strange combos of powers we had.

I believe you can find the game and all of its supplements free on the web somewhere (legally).   I  don't have it bookmarked any more though.

I just learned that game about a year and a half ago. And I agree, figuring out just why you have so many mixed-up powers is half the fun. (I had to explain why my guy had the strength of Spider-Man and the stamina of Aunt Mae. I decided on asthma, so he could chuck cars down the street but then had to grab his inhaler let he suffocate.)

I'd actually like to run a game of this in the near future, once I finish my current Orpheus campaign and my wife has a go at her custom setting d20 campaign she wants to run.

I insist that Mr. M and wife move out to the east coast to hang out with me.

I happen to know of a tech support job about to open.

Maybe in a year and a bit, once I get into a grad school. (Most of my top choices are on the east coast. But they're also really expensive, so we'll see what happens.)

go for UVA. UVA rocks my face off. AND it's in Charlottesville, where I will probably be moving in a few years, due to the fact that life is cheaper to live there (though not so cheap as Spokane, I understand) and not so icky as the DC area. Also, it's pretty, and the location of Thomas Jefferson's home.

They have a good English program too, so I hear.

One of my favorite characters I ever created was a mute who spoke to people through a pet rock (he had limited telepathy and could communicate with inanimate objects). He was a former hollywood stuntman who got his powers when he fell into some chemicals. He sits at home during the day, collecting disability checks and watching an unplugged television (the TV talks to him). By night he uses a gateway to go anywhere he might wish to fight crime.

Small problem: my grad work will probably be in either molecular biology or biochemistry.
