Brandon Sanderson / Re: Info on the remaining metals
« on: February 17, 2009, 03:47:30 PM »
To answer the question.  Nicrosil works similar to duriliam.  It forces a powerful burst of other metals being burned a the time and consumes them. The difference is that where duriliam affects your metals, nicrosil affects the metals of other people.  So I nicrosil could flare a soothers metals letting him force his will on someone or a tin burners metals essentially blinding them.

It says on the poster earlier in this thread what nicrosil does.

That didnt really answer the question.

Also, where the heck are you guys getting all of this info?  Several of you are talking about another trilogy like it will be created soon.  I remember brandon saying that if he made another mistborn book it would be a ways off.

Another one even said that there would be 2 more trilogy?  What?!

Most stories tend to loosen up on these rules though.  In the mistborn series it seems that the division line is drawn at torture because both sides kill and take over beings.  In fact most books have the good guys killing as much as the bad guys if not more.  The three oaths are strict but you will see that most of the main characters are not bound by them so they don't matter as much, and they are perfectly capable of torture as seen when they were ferreting out the black ajah in the tower.  The definition of using it as a weapon is rather vague too. They could easily tie you up in the air then have the warder stick you with his sword.

I'm sure the reference is in the MB3 Spoiler topic somewhere, but I don't feel like digging through it. However, I definitely recall Brandon saying that the main character would be a Nicrosil Misting and that there would not be any Mistborn.

SPOILER!!

That is right if I remember correctly.  Also I beleive the only reoccuring characters that are possible is Marsh and Sazed.  March is still alive and apparently can pull off the same trick as the lord ruler.   That is if my memory serves me correctly.  It has been known to fail me in the past.  :D  So technically Marsh would be the only one with full Mistborn like capabilities.  Will be interesting if they use him though seems how he is no longer controlled by Rune.

I know I read somewhere in the mass of reading I have done about Brandon that he mentioned the next mistborn series taking place much later in the future.  He also stated that mistborns were alot more rare or didn't exist, cant remember which.  So the additional metal and working in groups is alot more common.  Something like using Necrobursting someone who is pushing on two objects.  They would squish themselves because they would not have pewter to survive live Vin did.  It also could be used to help allies.

I would forsee people carrying more vials and less metal in them to lower the risks of being necroburst.

Okay that sounds interesting. I am going to have to find that book.  It is just completely different when you have to try and ruin something to save it.

While I just looked it up and maybe I won't be reading it any time soon. It is no longer in print and hard to find.  It is even considered a collectors item. :P

I had read that he had another book planned for the world a while back. It just slipped my mind.  The same article had the list of what he had planned to write. His plans are very extensive.  I know his next project is Way of Kings after AMoL, but he did state that he was going to release other books during the time he is writing Way of Kings.  Hopefully one of these will be he sequel to Elantris.  I would definitely like to read more about the Dakhor.  From reading Elantris I figure that just about anything is possible with AonDor if you can figure out how to write it.  But we don't have a whole lot of information on what the Dakhor are really capable of.

I don't really need the same characters back.  I just want more based in that world.  I really loved the magic system in this book, even though we did not get to see much of it due to it not working through most of the book.  I find that Brandon has alot of interesting magic systems though and like the change in pace from the traditional ones that exist in other fantasy books.

I think he did leave openings for the same characters to make a return in future books though and would not be upset if they showed up.  ;)

I would suggest the Runelords series by David Farland.  It has a unique system of magic like Brandon's books.  I definatly enjoyed reading them.

I voted for Mistborn it would really depend on the sitauation.  In a stealth or ambush situation the Elantris would have the advantage.  However in face to face combat you have to deal with the time taken to draw and the fact that everyone can read exactly what you are doing.  Its glowing in the air in front of you.  "Hey look he is making a fire ball that goes forward I am going to run to the left."  They dont even need atium.  They could use it though to read the entire Aon before it was finished though. That would give them even more time to react.

I loved the Elantris book. I wish there was more to the story.  Maybe in the future Brandon will come back to this world and expand upon it.

I think an Elantarian that could think fast would be more then a match for a Dakhor monk.  As long as they are close enough to Elantris to not lose there power.  I mean if they can turn garbage into corn can't they turn there environment into something more sinister.  Like making a pool of acid or lava under the monk.  I think the major drawback is the time it will take them to draw something in the air. Also if you learn the symbols you can read what attack is coming because there is no way to really hide it.

I'm actually glad it will probably be released in 2 books.  Its not like we have to wait 2 years for it this time and hopefully with 2 books they will stay in their bindings after the 6th or 7th read rather then fall apart.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Who was the Announcer? (Spoilers)

Ruin always leaves similar messages and does not make drastic changes to the text that has been writtin.  Otherwise the changes are to noticeable.
Not quite always. He made an exception for when Preservation was trying to write in the ash for Elend.

True.  That was defiantly an exception.  One that ended with some strange acting and pointing as I recall.  But, that scene also shows the point of how the drastic changes where noticed immediately.  That's why I find it hard to see Ruin making big changes. I did just read some of the HOA spoiler thread though and EUOL stated that the Announcer was just made up by Ruin so that Ruin could control the image of who he wanted to be the HOA.

I think Hanami's point about it being written points to it not being changed since Kwann seems how all of the Kandra writings were done with in metal.  However, the prophecies were most likely already corrupted at that point.  In my opinion it is likely that an announcer always did exist though.  Now maybe the announcer was never suppose to announce a person but just the fact that the HOA was coming.  That would allow the announcer and the HOA to be the same person without them ever realizing it.  Ruin always leaves similar messages and does not make drastic changes to the text that has been writtin.  Otherwise the changes are to noticeable.
