New Comic Company on the Block
« on: February 16, 2005, 11:35:20 AM »
AK Comics features heroes from and stories set in the Middle East. It's published in Cairo, but they've taken the DC Comics approach and have made up cities that are analogs to regional cities. It looks interesting.

The fact that it's called AK Comics is hilarious. If it were published anywhere other than the Middle East, I'd call it racial stereotyping.

Wow, that looks intersting. Unfortunately, the translations aren't so good. Course, that could be half the fun.

What's the humor or stereotype in "AK"?
All Saiyuki fans should check out Dazzle! Emotionally wrenching action-adventure and quirky humor! (At least read chapter 6 and tell me if you're not hooked.) Volume 10 out now!

AK47, used by tin pot dictatorships and self proclaimed freedom fighters worldwide. But especially in the arab strip.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

The AK is the gun of choice for virtually every terrorist cell and dictatorship in the world, because it's incredibly cheap and reliable. We westerners always tend to stereotype the middle east as a land of terrorists and dictators, so I thought the name was an odd choice.

I can't find anything on the site about where the name come from. I wonder if there's some Arabic wordplay we're missing out on.

It fits perfectly with the idea that lots of the big-moneyed arabs are wahabi militants.  I wouldn't be surprised if the comics turned out to be propoganda tools designed to produce more recruits for the Radical Islamic snuff-terrorists.

I would, what with there being female leads, the channeling of pagan magical force, and the occassional typical comic scantily clad female. That doesn't sound very Arab extremist to me.

Which seems basically like a reasonable response.

You read the one preview they have it goes from guy following kid theif, kid theif leading him to secret theives den, big guy who seems like the hero-sorts says something along lines of "OOhhh, pretty city. I wanna be a part of this." That's all you're given, so who knows. Fell/SE get a review copy and check it out, huh? =P

don't think I'm not working on that. Phone calls to Egypt are terribly expensive though. I might as well BUY a comic for that price.

Even if you contact them, overseas places almost never send anything. We got an RPG from Finland once, though, so that's cool.
