Stacer's visit to Utah: Oct 21-24
« on: October 04, 2005, 03:25:16 PM »
I decided to start a new thread, because the old one was named improperly and involved a lot of half-formed information.

Here's the deal so far: Stacer will be in town around 10:30am on Friday the 21st, ready for a weekend of boundless Utah hedonism. There are two main possibilities for group parties:

1) Game night: there will be a Magic game with a squirrel deck, but beyond that anything goes. I imagine we'll see some Robo Rally, perhaps some House on the Hill, etc.

2) Movie night: it's almost Halloween, and that can only mean one thing--MST3K's perennial "Werewolf." This was a huge hit at last year's Halloween part, but we had a pretty small group and it would be fun to do it again.

Given that EUOL and Kije have a Friday-night writing group, I suggest that we avoid scheduling anything that night. This leaves us with Saturday and Sunday--we could do two nights, or combine them into one super party, or whatever.

Who's up for what?

I vote for a game night on Saturday. I don't know what movie you are referring to, but I've been looking forward to trying Magic again.

(Because of Fell's executive decision to not do it on Friday, I am letting my friend know to plan her party that night. So Friday I will have plans.)

Stacer and I had talked about doing a Tim Burton movie night instead. Start with Nightmare Before Christmas and then do Beetlejuice or something. How does that sound?

For any Halloweeny movie night we might do, how about Hitchcock? I'm trying to think of the best one, but I don't know which off the top of my head. Dial M for Murder? I have that one on DVD. Or Rear Window. Or one of his more obscure ones, like Rope (which I didn't like as much, though). There are a number of more obscure ones that I've got in my Netflix queue, though.

Oh, and I also have Wait Until Dark on DVD, which is actually a Halloween tradition of mine, but you guys might not be as into blind Audrey Hepburn taking down drug fiends in the 60s.

Wait Until Dark is the shizzle. Might I also recommend Scream (taped off TV, but still a fine, fine thing)? Ooh, or Silence of the Lambs. We'd have to get it edited, but that's one of the best movies ever, scary or otherwise.

The bit at the end with the nightvision and darkness made me wriggle uncomfortably.  :'(

I will not watch Silence of the Lambs--edited or not. I watched a TV version when I was a teenager and still have nightmares about it. I don't like movies about serial killers like that--it's too real, and thus too scary for me.

I haven't seen Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice since I was like in seventh grade, and would happily watch those. I agree with Fell that Wait Until Dark is awesome, but I've seen it so many times that I would probably vote for another movie first. Same for Rear Window.

Are we doing the movie night on Sunday then? Or on Saturday, and games on Sunday? Or throwing out games entirely?

Yeah, that's one of the parts that I STILL have nightmares about.

Movies that give people nightmares are the best kind! At least for Halloween purposes.

Yeah, I'm going to vote no on Silence of the Lambs, too. I also got completely nightmare-creeped out by it, and I avoid movies that give me that kind of nightmare. It's really something I can't handle.

Just letting everyone know EUOL will not be available for that Saturday evening since he was under the impression that this shindig was Friday, that's what he gets for leaving his schedule in the hands of a Cockatiel.

Now that that's out of the way, what time are we thinking for Saturday?  Are we still doing a dinner?

That's weird. He emailed me and said he'd left time aside for Saturday night.

We could revert to Friday if we need to. What days does he have open, and why does he never post here himself? Communicating via cockatiel, filtered through Spriggan, is rarely a good idea.

To clarify what Sprig wrote:  I'd rather that we do gaming earlier on Saturday, so that I can go to a ward activity that has popped up on Saturday night.  I assumed, for some reason, that we'd get together in the afternoon for gaming.

Also, I add my vote to doing the movie night on Sunday.
